When a baby rhino (犀牛) was found weak and alone in a national park in South Africa, she, a lucky rhino. was immediately transported to the ICU at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary (庇护所). At only a few hours old, she was struggling to survive. She needed round-the-clock care and treatments to boost her weak immune system. Getting healthy hasn’t been easy, but she hasn’t had to go on this journey alone.
The baby rhino arrived at the shelter in December and was named Daisy, but another injured animal had already arrived the month before. It was a baby zebra named Modjadji. Although she isn’t the same species, she understands what Daisy has been through. Modjadji was admitted to the shelter’s ICU at the end of November after being found motionless and barely breathing on the reserve after heavy rains and storms. Modjadji was thought to be only a week old.
Unlikely as their friendship may seem, Daisy and Modjadji were quick to form a deep connection. As they grew stronger and braver, their curiosity got the best of them, and they started interacting with each other. Rhinos are very social animals and require companionship. Modjadji is fantastic company for Daisy and very affectionate toward her. From drinking milk out of bottles to “helping” some of the workers with their paperwork, these adorable friends just love being around each other.
We can’t get over how cute they are — and neither can the fans they’ve got on the local social media, where they love to give updates on this fantastic duo (搭档)! Once Daisy and Modjadji are healthy enough, the shelter will let them go so they can live freely with their fellow rhinos and zebras. But until that day comes, these girls have no problem being each other’s family.
4. Why did the author think Daisy was lucky?
A. Though in danger, she was rescued and treated in time.
B. Weak as she was, she was able to recover on her own.
C. She was in good health when found in the national park.
D. She could improve her immune system all by herself.
5. What can we learn about Modjadji in the second paragraph?
A. She is younger than Daisy.
B. She was abandoned by her mother.
C. She came to the shelter later than Daisy.
D. She was in poor condition when brought to the shelter.
6. Which of the following contributes to the friendship between Daisy and Modjadji?
A. They share one bottle of milk.
B. Daisy is in great need of companionship.
C. They belong to the same species that is social.
D. Modjadji often helps with the paperwork of the workers.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Daisy and Modjadji have both recovered.
B. The shelter will share more details about Daisy and Modjadji.
C. Daisy and Modjadji will return to the place where they lived later.
D. Many fans are helping find their family for Daisy and Modjadji.

When we’re tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That’s because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true?
Nathaniel Hoyle, a scientist of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, has been leading a study into this topic. The team discovered that fibroblast cells (成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night?
It’s all to do with your body’s circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm — a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time. New Scientist reported that a group of 30 genes that control the fibroblasts worked only daytime shifts, causing the slower healing process at night.
To test its theory, the Cambridge-based team examined data from the International Burn Injury Database, which records details of burn victims around the world. This analysis revealed that nighttime burns, on average, took 11 more days to heal than burns during the day.
A similar result occurred while experimenting using live mice. Those that were cut during night-time hours recovered more slowly than those during the day. “You can see by eyes, when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag,” research team member John O’ Neill told Science Alert.
He added, “The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime.” He went on to say that it could be beneficial to schedule surgeries in time with people’s circadian rhythms, earlier for early birds and later for night owls, in order to lessen recovery time. However, in any case, it might be best not to use anything sharp once the sun goes down.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To explain how we recharge our bodies.
B. To arouse the interest of the readers in the topic.
C. To prove that everyone suffers stress and injuries.
D. To introduce a new discovery for dealing with stress.
9. What do the researchers find during their research?
A. Burns take the same time to heal regardless of their cut time.
B. Fibroblast cells boost the healing by working nighttime shift.
C. Mice respond differently in the healing process from humans.
D. A body’s circadian rhythm matters in waking up fibroblast cells.
10. What can we learn according to John O’ Neill?
A. People tend to bear pain more when they are asleep.
B. Sharp knives are not suggested in the middle of the day.
C. Night owls operated on in the nighttime may recover sooner.
D. Evolution adaptation causes people’s time-varying responses.
11. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Why We Heal Injuries Better in the Daytime
B. A Research Offers Clues to Treating Injuries
C. How We Heal Wounds and Injuries Effectively
D. Scientists Unlock the Secret to Avoiding Injuries
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. A

Kilos are not the only thing that intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) will help you lose. A new study shows that the wildly popular weight-loss method could also inhibit hair growth.
Intermittent fasting is a time-restricted diet, where the day’s calorie intake is consumed over an 8-12 hour period, with fasting for the remaining hours. Research tracking participants on such diets for three months to a year has shown benefits like weight loss, improved heart health, and better control of blood sugar. These reported benefits have made intermittent fasting a global trend.
However, not all outcomes of intermittent fasting are positive. A recent study published on December 13 in Cell is among the first to link intermittent fasting with hair loss. The study found that intermittent fasting could block hair follicle (毛囊) regeneration by causing programmed cell death in activated hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). Mice subjected to intermittent fasting showed slower hair regeneration compared to those with constant food access. Though similar results were found in humans in a small clinical trial, the researchers cautioned that the effects might be less severe in humans due to their slower body processes and different hair growth patterns.
The researchers discovered that intermittent fasting slows hair growth because hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) struggle to handle oxidative stress (氧化应激) when the body switches from burning sugar to fat for energy. Normally, HFSCs alternate between activity and rest, and hair regrowth depends on these cells becoming active. In the study, mice with constant food access had active HFSCs after being shaved, and their hair regrew normally. However, the fasting mice experienced programmed cell death in their activated HFSCs, preventing hair regrowth.
Although these findings are significant, they are based on initial studies. Larger trials are needed to better understand how intermittent fasting affects hair growth, as individual responses may vary.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.

C
“You can see by eyes when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag,” research team member John O’ Neill told Science Alert.

However not all outcomes of intermittent fasting are positive.
12. What does the underlined word “inhibit” mean?
A. Encourage. B. Control. C. Stop. D. Maintain.
13. What was the primary research method used in the study?
A. Animal testing on mice. B. Observational study of diet habits.
C. Laboratory analysis of hair follicles. D. Long-term clinical trial with humans.
14. What prevents hair growth in fasting mice?
A. Different hair growth patterns. B. Slow oxidative stress response.
C. Programmed cell death in HFSCs. D. Activation of hair follicle stem cells.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A Intermittent Fasting: A Hairy Side Effect
B. Intermittent Fasting: friendly or frightening?
C. Intermittent Fasting and Hair Loss: A Delicate Balance
D. Intermittent Fasting and Weight Loss: A Complex Link

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.
