人与自我———做人与做事
Many studies show people who have more
control over their own life are healthierꎬ happier
and more likely to have better social relationships.
Teens cant make decisions as an adult. They
are less likely to notice and plan for risk. They
lack an adults self ̄control skills. But they want to
have full control over their life.
So what should parents do? In factꎬ their
right role as parents is that of coaches. As
coachesꎬ they do three things.
Firstlyꎬ these parentcoaches always keep an
eye out for what skills a teenager needs to build.
They have many conversations with their kids to
build skills. What went wrong there? How might
that be different? What would you do if this event
happened when you were out at night?
Secondlyꎬ these parentcoaches allow teens to
experience the results of their poor decisions. If
you dont finish your homeworkꎬ youll have to
discuss that with your teacher yourself. If you
cant do housework todayꎬ youll need to spend
time doing it tomorrow.
Thirdlyꎬ these parentcoaches take every
chance to cheer for their teens. They will say “ I
love the way you did ”ꎬ “Thanks so much for
” or “I love talking to you about ”.
Coaching teens can be scaryꎬ tiring and
frustrating. Its far easier to take over. But
coaching leads to happierꎬ better adjusted (调整)
teens who are more prepared for adulthood.
