At the age of 50, Phoebe was told that she had cancer, with less than a year to live. Hearing the news, she decided to spend the rest of her life doing what she loved most—watching birds.
She went off to some of the world’s most amazing natural places at once. Her trips were really hard. But Phoebe surprised her doctors and her family as she carried on travelling. Years came and went, she was still alive.
Ten years later, the cancer came back. But as she continued with her trips, the cancer went away again. At the age of 61, she had seen 7,530 kinds of birds and was named “the world’s leading bird watcher.”
Four years later, during a trip to Mexico, she set a new record when she found species number 8,000. In fact, at that time only 12 people around the world had seen more than 7,000kinds of birds!
Phoebe’s interest in bird-watching started when she moved to Missouri. There, she joined a group of people who were interested in birds, insects and plants. She became very worried about pollution and its influence on the environment. “We have to protect nature, or the future people won’t be able to watch these beautiful birds.” she said.
Sadly, when she was 68, she died in a car accident on the island where she had stayed for two weeks and added another five to her list of over 8,400 species. Jim Savage was setting out for a day’s fishing off the Florida coast (海岸) when he heard the cries of a baby dolphin in trouble. The three-month-old had got her tail caught in the ropes of a used crab trap. Jim knew that if he left her, the dolphin would have little chance of living. He cut her free and got in touch with the government. She was taken to Clear water Marine Aquarium, but her injuries were so severe that she lost her tail.
The aquarium staff named the baby dolphin Winter and she gradually learned how to swim again. Unluckily, because of the way she was moving in the water without her tail, she was in danger of developing a problem with her spine (脊椎). Kevin Carroll and Dan Strzempka, who ran a company making artificial limbs, heard about the problem and had a brilliant idea. Kevin and Dan told the staff at the aquarium that they would make an artificial (人造的) tail for Winter!
There were a lot of challenges that Kevin and Dan had to deal with along the way, like trying to fit an artificial tail on a playful young dolphin that doesn’t want to stay still! It took over fifty prototypes (模型) and a year and a half before Winter finally got her new 30-inch tail. After seeing her swim with it for the first time, Kevin said that ★ .
Making the tail was only half the story, though. For Winter to be able to swim properly, the artificial tail needed to be held in place without damaging her skin. Specialists came up with a soft material that firmly holds the skin and doesn’t hurt. Designed especially for Winter, this material was so successful that “WintersGel” is now being used to make artificial limbs more comfortable for people with false arms and legs all around the world.
In 2011 the tale was made into a film, ‘Dolphin Tale”, starring Winter herself. It’s about a dolphin that would have died, but could live because a few people cared.

Hello, everyone! I am happy to share my experience of working as a volunteer with you.
Last summer, I volunteered at a local animal shelter. There were many stray animals in need of care. I helped feed the cats and dogs every day. I also cleaned their living areas to make sure they had a clean environment.
I love drawing and this hobby helped me a lot. I made some lovely pictures of the animals and put them up around the shelter to attract more people to notice these poor animals.
Volunteering is really meaningful. It not only gives me a chance to help those in need but also makes me understand the importance of love and responsibility. It’s a great way to make the world a better place.
