A surfer who lost his right leg to a shark attack months ago has amazed people by returning to the waves on his one remaining leg. In a show of remarkable courage, the surfer Kai McKenzie paddled out to the same spot where he had been attacked by a white shark four months earlier, which was quite a rare case.
After the initial shock, McKenzie kept his spirits uplifted by his mission to return to the water before the end of the year. The 23-year-old had promised to get back into surfing as soon as he was able to. McKenzie took off his artificial limb (肢) and got back to riding the waves and practicing new moves. He paddled out with focus, catching several waves, jumping on his board with one leg and occasionally steering (控制) it with one hand when it was off course. It’s far from effortless to surf with one leg which causes imbalance, and when he wiped out, he'd only got one leg to swing back up.
Supported by family, McKenzie appeared at ease in the same water despite admitting he was a bit nervous because the water looked “exactly like that day”. His bravery and skill while surfing on one foot touched everyone. He later posted his return to the ocean online. “It’s one of the craziest feelings I’ve had! It’s the first time that I’d paddled back in the water where I got bitten,” he wrote. “I sat out there by myself and took it in for a little bit then a bunch of good people surfed with me.”
Mark, a surfing champion who lost his right leg due to cancer, mentioned McKenzie’s return to the ocean, saying, “That fear of the shark would have been behind him as he was paddling out. Getting back out there is extremely courageous. McKenzie might not at the top yet, but he’s young and he’ll adapt fast. He has taken his first and biggest step by getting out there.”
24. Why are people amazed by McKenzie?
A. He has lost his right leg. B. He rose right where he fell.
C. He has a gift for surfing. D. He was attacked by a shark.
25. How did McKenzie manage to surf with only one leg?
A. He relied on his artificial limb for support.
B. He got help from other surfers in the water.
C. He tried new moves and adjusted his techniques.
D. He used a special surfboard designed for balance.
26. What was McKenzie’s state of mind when returning to the water?
A. Basically relieved. B. Extremely tense.
C. Rather unwilling. D. Totally fearless.
27. What do Mark’s words imply about McKenzie’s future?
A. He will struggle to surf effectively.
B. He is likely to quit surfing due to fear.
C. He will live with the fear of the shark.
D. He is expected to be a promising surfer.

Mike said the £10 that he paid for an anti-snoring (防止打鼾的) pillow last summer would have been better spent on bread. Still, it seemed like an opportunity too good to miss at that time, a tiny price to pay to give his wife good nights and to save him from sleep divorce.
However, the silent night it promised never materialized and he’s now frequently banished to the living room. The pillow meanwhile is in a landfill somewhere, along with countless others he imagines, purchased by people who were sold a dream.
James Smith, a sleep expert, sympathizes. He warns people to be careful of the claims some pillow dealers make. Pillows claiming to be anti-snoring don’t stop snoring in itself. They are designed to reposition the head and neck to open the airways, but it is worth noting that 67% of snorers will stop or reduce snoring simply by lying on their side, so it may be more advantageous to find “good pillows” that could optimize (优化) sleep in a side sleeping position, James Smith suggested.
Those “good pillows” should be comfortable and should preserve a good sleep position. If they can keep a person on his side, they will probably help reduce snoring. Different sizes and types of pillows are better for different sleepers. A side sleeper should choose a pillow that fills the gap and keeps their head in position. However, for back sleepers, a pillow should fill the space between the shoulders and the back of the head. This will always mean a thinner pillow than that of a side sleeper, as it is a smaller gap to fill.
Given how individual a choice of pillows is, the most sensible strategy is to try before you commit to buying. And this shouldn’t be a quick squeeze (捏) in the bed shop. Try it for as long as possible. Many pillows now come with a trial period. Is it still comfortable after 5, 10 or even 15 minutes?
28. How did Mike feel after buying an anti-snoring pillow?
A. Regretful. B. Secure. C. Confused. D. Worried.
29. What does the underlined word “banished” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Taken in. B. Relied on. C. Called on. D. Driven out.
30. How do “good pillows” suggested by James Smith help snorers?
A. By keeping side sleepers from lying on their side.
B. By supporting the body correctly for side sleepers.
C. By using comfortable materials as a sleeping aid.
D. By using thinner sizes to improve quality of sleep.
31. What is the key advice given for choosing a pillow?
A. Feel it briefly in the store. B. Choose one with good flexibility.
C. Test it extensively before buying. D. Check its comfort after a trial period.
D
Researchers have found that the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5℃ above preindustrial levels is now almost certainly impossible. There is a 50% chance, the researchers reported, that global warming will exceed (超过) 2℃ even if humanity meets current goals of rapid decarbonization (脱碳) to net zero by the 2050s. Previous studies have concluded that decarbonization at the pace would likely keep global warming below 2℃.
For the new study, climate scientist Noah Diffenbaugh and his team trained an AI system to predict how high global temperatures could climb, depending on the pace of decarbonization. When training the AI, they used temperature and greenhouse gas data from lots of climate model simulations (模拟). To predict future warming, however, they fed AI the actual historical temperatures, along with different possible futures for greenhouse gas emissions.
Their study found that many regions will exceed 3℃ of warming by 2060 in a situation in which emissions continue to increase — sooner than predicted in earlier studies, and that the world has almost certainly missed its chance to achieve the ambitious goal of keeping long-term warming below 2℃.
The study builds on 2023 research in which researchers predicted how many years are left before the 1.5 and 2℃ goals are exceeded. However, as these thresholds (阈) are based on average conditions over many years, they don’t tell the full story of how extreme the climate could become.
The new predictions underline the importance of investing more than in decarbonization. We’ve been seeing accelerating trend of extreme weather impacts globally in recent years. This study also suggests that, even in the best-case situation, we are very likely to experience conditions that are more severe than what we’ve been dealing with recently.
“Even if all the effort and investment in decarbonization is as successful as possible, there is a real risk, without equal investments in making human and natural systems more resilient to severe consequences of continued warming,” said Diffenbaugh.
32. What is the main conclusion of the study?
A. Keeping warming below 1.5℃ is now out of reach.
B. Limiting warming to 2℃ is still possible.
C. Decarbonization will limit warming.
D. Warming has already exceeded 2℃.
33. How does AI work in predicting global warming?
A. By focusing on decarbonization goals.
B. By analyzing extreme weather events.
C. By combining models with real-world data.
D. By learning from historical temperature data.
34. What does Diffenbaugh suggest is needed besides decarbonization?
A. New technologies. B. More investment in adaptation.
C. Slower decarbonization. D. Focus merely on emissions.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A The Future of Decarbonization
B. The Role of AI in Climate Prediction
C. The Impact of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
D. The Challenge of Achieving Climate Goals

It was a regular day at the smartphone store. The usual crowd of customers came in, each with their own unique issues. My job was to help them all, whether it was something as simple as transferring contacts or as difficult as fixing a phone that wouldn’t turn on.
Then Joe appeared. He looked to be in his early 50s. His hair was slightly graying. He was practically running towards the counter, his eyes wide with panic.
“You need to give me a new phone!” Joe almost shouted. “This one you sold me a few days ago is broken! The photos in my phone are totally messed up!”
Joe’s urgency made me pay closer attention. “Let’s take a look at what’s going on,” I said. Joe thrust (塞) the phone into my hands, nearly dropping it.
“Look at this! Every picture is ruined!” He sounded out of breath. I opened the photo gallery, and sure enough, the selfies (自拍照) he’d taken were quite strange: His forehead was stretched, and his eyes were oddly wide. The pictures looked like something out of a funhouse mirror.
I started checking the settings, detecting there was a heavy filter (滤光器) turned on, which was distorting (扭曲) his face in every picture. “Sir, it’s actually a filter that’s causing the issue. Your phone isn’t broken; it’s just the settings. Resetting the settings of the camera will help.”
“But it’s digital! I didn’t mess with anything! My photos were fine when I took them,”he argued. “I need these pictures to be perfect! Please, just fix it,” his voice had softened, almost like he was begging now.
Then, almost in a whisper, he admitted, “I need these photos for a dating website.”Suddenly, it all made sense. This was not just any photo but was his shot at finding love. The thought of it going wrong had made him completely uneasy.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文:
Realizing how much this meant to Joe, I knew I had to help him. I showed him how to reset the camera settings, making sure to turn off the filter that had been causing the distortion. I double-checked everything, wanting to be certain that this time the photos would come out just right. After completing the adjustment, I suggested Joe start fresh and take some new photos. He still looked tense, like he wasn’t sure this would work. I offered to help him take photos and guided him to pose decently. “Okay, just relax and give me a smile.” Joe forced a nervous but hopeful smile.
I showed him the results of my shots of him. Joe stared at the screen for a moment, and then, as if a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Those pictures were normal: His forehead wasn’t stretched, and his eyes looked like his own. He broke into a wide smile.“These are perfect!” he exclaimed, his voice filled with relief. “You really saved the day.”Then Joe left the store a different man, hopeful and ready to take his shot at finding love.Seeing him off, I sensed a smile spread across my face. We will meet every thursday from four PM to six PM. During the period, we will look at and discuss different photos and photography techniques. We will then set a chAllenge or theme for that week. For example, for this week, we are going to focus on architecture, take photos of buildings, and then send me your best one. I'll then select the best three, and we'll vote on which one is the best, with the winner getting a small prize. If you have any questions, please let me know.
