“Just go up and jump. Don’t think. If you do, you’ll just complicate things,” shouted Nuno, a photographer travelling with me on a press trip to Switzerland. I held onto the cold metal railing (栏杆), while he egged on me to keep going.
As I reached the top of the ladder leading up to the diving board suspended over a green pond and looked over at the vast nothingness sandwiched between, I did exactly what Nuno told me. The next thing I knew was that I walked to the edge, closed my eyes, held my breath and jumped.
I don’t remember the fall. What I do remember is the time it took me to break into the water’s surface. It felt like a century. For me, a male adult who got by with breast strokes and couldn’t tread (踩) water without holding onto something, it felt like a barrier had been overcome. Something changed the moment I jumped off that five-meter-high diving board into the depths of Drei Weieren, a cold 17th-century pond in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland, which its residents crowded for a swim during summer and to skate in the winter.
I couldn’t stop smiling as I changed out of my wet clothes in a bath house and wondered what it was that made me excited. Maybe it was the challenge of doing what I would otherwise have never tried — jumping off an edge. Maybe it was the freedom that Nuno’s words forced me to pursue. What he said holds true for so much of life, doesn’t it? Don’t we all complicate things by thinking more than we need to? Sometimes one needs to quiet the voice of self-doubt and throw oneself into something.
I enjoyed being wrapped in exhilaration, so over the next week, I threw caution to the winds and tried new things with varying levels of success.
4. Why did Nuno shout to the author?
A. To encourage him to dive. B. To urge him to pose for a photo.
C. To remind him not to fall off the board. D. To warn him to think twice before diving.
5. How did the author feel after trying diving?
A. He was ashamed of his identity. B. He was sympathetic to Nuno.
C. He was grateful to local people. D. He was satisfied with himself.
6. What does the author share in paragraph 4?
A. Reflections on unexpected travel plans. B. Reasons for his unsuccessful diving attempt.
C. Lessons learned from his diving experience. D. Assumptions about future diving practice.
7. What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Support. B. Excitement. C. Security. D. Praise.

Scientists have created a new app designed to identify dangerous mosquitoes based on sounds the insects make. The app, called Abuzz, is aimed at helping fight major diseases spread by mosquitoes.
Haripriya Vaidehi Narayanan is one of the researchers who helped develop the app. Narayanan told VOA that anyone with a mobile phone could use the app to identify mosquitoes. “If they see a mosquito around, they just take out their phone, open up the app, point their phone towards the mosquito and hit the record button,”she said. “Then, when the mosquito flaps its wings and starts flying around, it makes that noise, that annoying buzzing noise. That noise is what gets recorded by the Abuzz app.” she added.
Many diseases that mosquitoes carry do not have cures or vaccines. So, targeting the flying insects is the best way to control them. “The most important step is to know where the mosquitoes are,” Narayanan said.
Traditional methods for hunting mosquitoes are costly and can take a very long time. The process also requires labor-intensive trapping as well as trained scientists to identify the insects.
Manu Prakash is a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University and a lead investigator on the project. He says that out of about 3,500 different mosquito species, only about 40 are dangerous to humans. Prakash says the goal of the project was to find out whether the mosquitoes around a person's house are just an annoyance, or whether they are possibly dangerous.
When mosquitoes move their wings up and down, they produce buzzing sounds. But each kind of mosquito makes a slightly different buzzing noise. The app records these sounds. Users of the app can get an answer by recording as little as one or two seconds of the buzzing sound. The app compares this recording to a collection of other recordings. It then predicts which species of mosquito it is most likely to be.
By making use of mosquito information worldwide, the app can help build maps of where dangerous mosquitoes are. This can help scientists and health officials identify areas where disease is likely to break out and where to target mosquito control.
8. Why is it important to locate mosquitoes?
A. Because they are very small and hard to find.
B. Because diseases carried by them are a big problem.
C. Because mosquitoes flap their wings very quickly.
D. Because the buzzing noise of mosquitoes is annoying.
9. What will Abuzz do after it records the sound of a mosquito?
A. Compare it to a database and identify its species.
B. Make a somewhat different buzzing noise.
C. Release some chemicals to kill the mosquito.
D. Draw a map of the place where the mosquito was.
10. In which way could Abuzz help people?
A. It can help people control the number of mosquitoes.
B. It can help people avoid some species of mosquitoes.
C. It can help predict where mosquito-carried diseases are most likely to occur.
D. It can help record the mosquito hiding places very quickly.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Different Species of Mosquitoes in the World
B. New Ways to Fight Disease Caused by Mosquitoes
C. How to Identify Sounds Made by Different Mosquitoes
D. A New App That Can Identify Dangerous Mosquitoes
D
Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism (机制) that helps us maintain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be tiring. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.
It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar choices as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.
It’s easy to paint the familiarity principle as an enemy or something to battle as if it is something that holds us back from living our dreams. But this attitude might be overwhelming because it tends to encourage us toward big-picture thinking. Where we imagine that change requires a substantial dramatic (巨大而突然) swing that we don’t feel ready for. Some articles suggest the solution to familiarity frustration is complete exposure to novelty While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelm and burnout.
So what if we can work with the familiarity principle instead? Familiarity is something we can learn to play with and enjoy. It is a setting for creativity and a pathway to expansion. We can broaden the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lies to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool of valuable alternatives.
12. What allows insurance companies to charge old customers more?
A. The familiarity principle. B. The advertising cost.
C. The improved service. D. The law of the market.
13. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A. Our preferences affect our decisions.
B. There can be a mismatch between desires and actions.
C. The familiarity principle is a double-edged sword.
D. Familiarity tends to generate disrespect.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the solution in some articles?
A. Objective. B. Favorable. C. Disapproving. D. Tolerant.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Gently Expand Your Familiarity Zone B. Step Out Of Your Familiarity Zone
C Spare A Thought For Your Preference D. Give Priority To The Mere Exposure Effect

It was a sunny day when Aiden came to me excitedly and asked if I would go on a camping trip to the mountains with him. In my mind, I immediately thought of a nice log cabin, a warm fireplace with burning flames, cups of hot cocoa giving out steam, and comfortable beds. Little did I know that my pleasant imagination was going to be broken.
When Aiden and his elder brother, Lebron, showed up in a truck full of all kinds of camping things - big tents, tightly rolled sleeping bags, strong canteens, flashlights and compasses (指南针), I was really surprised. Of course, I had packed a backpack as I was told, but this was obviously not the easy camping I had expected. It looked more like a tough survival trip!
Lebron, who was always efficient, was very serious and hurried us to get into the truck so that we could leave the noisy city. As we got closer to the mountains, I couldn’t help noticing that they looked much bigger and scarier than I imagined. The trees were very tall and the whole environment made me a little afraid.
At the beginning of the trail, Lebron skillfully tied a sleeping bag to my pack and gave Aiden and me a serious talk about how to behave when hiking to camp. The first part of the path was like a road in the woods, which made the climbing seem easy at first. But soon, it became narrower and steeper, forcing me to focus all my attention on it and stop talking. As we climbed higher, we got above the trees and I could see the path winding up the mountain.
Just as we were making good progress disaster approached. Out of nowhere, a thick fog rolled in, quickly enveloping us. Visibility dropped to almost zero, and I could hardly see my own feet.

C Lessons learned from his diving experience. D. Assumptions about future diving practice.
7. What does the underlined word “exhilaration” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Support. B. Excitement. C. Security. D. Praise.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第四段“Maybe it was the challenge of doing what I would otherwise have never tried — jumping off an edge. Maybe it was the freedom that Nuno’s words forced me to pursue. What he said holds true for so much of life, doesn’t it? Don’t we all complicate things by thinking more than we need to? Sometimes one needs to quiet the voice of self-doubt and throw oneself into something.(也许这是我做了一件我本不会尝试的事情——从边缘跳下去的挑战。也许是努诺的话迫使我追求的自由。他说的话在很多生活中都是正确的,不是吗? 我们是不是都想得太多,把事情搞复杂了? 有时候,你需要平息自我怀疑的声音,全身心投入到某件事中去)”可知,作者在第4段分享了从他的跳水经历中学到的教训。故选C。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“I couldn’t stop smiling as I changed out of my wet clothes in a bath house and wondered what it was that made me excited.(当我在澡堂里换下湿漉漉的衣服时,我忍不住微笑,心想究竟是什么让我如此兴奋)”及画线词后“… I threw caution to the winds and tried new things with varying levels of success.(……我抛开顾虑,尝试新事物,取得了不同程度的成功)”可知,作者应该是享受这种兴奋的感觉,所以接下来的一周,他抛开谨慎,尝试新事物,并取得了不同程度的成功,由此可知,“exhilaration”的意思应该是“兴奋”。故选B。

Where we imagine that change requires a substantial dramatic (巨大而突然的) swing that we don’t feel ready for.
C The improved service.
C. Spare A Thought For Your Preference D. Give Priority To The Mere Exposure Effect
A 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第一段“Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism (机制) that helps us maintain our energy and focus our attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be tiring. So unless we have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance companies openly charge existing customers more than new ones.(研究表明,单纯的暴露效应,也被称为熟悉原则,会激发我们的决定。这是一种有益的心理机制,可以帮助我们保持精力充沛,把注意力集中在其他事情上。习惯新事物需要努力,而且可能会很累。因此,除非我们有糟糕的经历,否则我们很可能会从我们已经习惯的公司购买股票。这就是为什么公司在广告和营销上花那么多钱,为什么保险公司公开向现有客户收取比新客户更高的费用)”可知,熟悉原则让保险公司向老客户收取更多费用。故选A。
根据第二段“It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar choices as more desirable. But when acting on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.(这并不是说我们只想要已知的东西。
根据第三段“While this can appear effective in the short run, we may only end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelm and burnout.(虽然这在短期内看起来是有效的,但我们最终可能只是用一个问题代替另一个问题。它也有让人不堪重负和精疲力竭的风险。)”可知,这段话表明作者对文章中提出的解决方案持反对态度,认为这种解决方案可能只是暂时有效,而且可能带来新的问题和风险。因此,作者的态度是反对的。故选C。
【15题详解】

If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can consider changing the conditions in and around our lies to make more space for our preferences to take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening pool of valuable alternatives.(我们可以一点一点地扩大熟悉的范围。 故选A。

Just as we were making good progress, disaster approached. Out of nowhere, a thick fog rolled in, quickly enveloping us. Visibility dropped to almost zero, and I could hardly see my own feet.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Panic started to wash over me in waves. My heart beat wildly and I cried loudly, “What on earth should we do? Will we be lost forever?” Aiden grasped my arm tightly, his eyes wide with fear too. But Lebron stayed calm, his voice steady as he said, “Don’t panic. Follow me closely.” He took out a compass and led the way slowly, feeling the ground with his feet. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down, following his steps and moving on.
When we finally reached the camping site on the mountain top, my legs were hurting badly. But the moment I saw the magnificent view, all the pain disappeared. As darkness fell, we set up the tents and lit a fire. The crackling flames warmed our bodies as we crowded together, sharing not only stories and laughter but also a newfound bond. This trip taught me that the journey might be tough, but with friends by our side, we can overcome any difficulty and find beauty in the most unexpected places. True friendship is the compass that guides us through life’ s foggy paths.
Panic started to wash over me in waves. My heart beat violently as I thought of the countless horror stories set in foggy mountains. “What if we can’t find our way back and are trapped here forever?” I asked anxiously, my voice trembling. Lebron patted my shoulder firmly, “Stay calm. The compass is our reliable guide. We’ll be okay.” His confident words steadied my nerves. We inched forward with care, the thick fog cold and wet against our faces, but a ray of hope kept us going on.
When we finally reached the camping site on the mountain top, my legs were hurting badly. Yet, as I looked out at the vast stretch of mountains and valleys below, all the pain seemed to fade away quickly. Aiden grinned, “We made it! It was all worth it!” As darkness set in, we set up our tents, lit a fire and shared stories happily. To be honest, I was longing for a hot shower and a soft bed, but as I gazed at the crackling flames and the starry sky above, I knew this was an adventure I would never forget.
