Dear Jack,
I am sorry to know that you often play games on your mobile phone. You quarreled with your parents, which made you upset. I

For one thing, not only can they harm your eyes, making you be short in sight, but also scientists have proved that they can also
affect your brain as well. For another, it is a waste of time to use mobile phone too much, which will make you addicted. Moreover,
mobile phones can also spread some false information to cheat you. Last but not least, it can be a waste of energy and money.
As for your parents, you should make an apology to them.
Yours,

Noah蒺s face returned to normal color. The nurse was there and rubbed his back to help calm the child as he recovered.
Paragraph 2:
That day, Ava realized the importance of first aid. Before the nurse left, Ava asked her to teach her and the other people how to

Coming into the freshman year at Paul College, Samantha was concerned about her ability as
an individual to make an impact on such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand
out from peers in high school. Luckily, each first鄄year student in Paul College takes part in what is
called the First鄄year Innovation
(创新 )
and Research Experience, commonly known as the FIRE
Program, where she was able to make invaluable connections with her fellow students and their peer
advisor who had so much first鄄hand experience with what they all were going through.
The biggest highlight of her freshman year was working alongside her FIRE team on a Grand
Challenge Project, in which every FIRE team competed against one another in the Undergraduate
Research Conference. Each team had to create a unique product that addressed one of the five fol鄄

“
Water is Life

“
Food

“
Threats from Cyberspace

“

“

“
Addictive Society

Doing research, collecting facts and organizing discussions or even debates were a huge amount of
work before they went to compete against other teams.
After weeks of preparation, all their efforts paid off at the Undergraduate Research Conference.
They earned a spot in the final round of the conference, where they competed against the top team
from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. They were so overcome with pride when they were
finally announced as the overall first place team at the college!
If it weren蒺t for her group蒺s determination, excellent teamwork and their awesome peer advisor
Hayley, they would not have been able to accomplish everything they did. This experience would be
instrumental in her future.
4. What do we know about Samantha from Paragraph 1?
A. She performed quite well in high school.
B. She represented her team to win first prize.
C. She applied to enter for the FIRE Program.

fortable experience, particularly if you蒺re reading a book from a culture that may have quite diffe鄄
rent values from your own. But it can also be really enlightening. Wrestling with unfamiliar ideas
can help clarify your own thinking. And it can also show up blind spots in the way you might have
been looking at the world.
I don蒺t want to suggest that it蒺s at all possible to get a rounded picture of a country simply by
reading one book. But the stories I read that year did make me more alive than ever before to the
richness, diversity and complexity of our remarkable planet. These days, when I look at my book鄄
shelves or consider the works on my e鄄reader, they tell a rather different story. It蒺s the story of the
power books have to connect us across political, geographical, cultural, social, religious divides. It蒺s
the tale of the potential human beings have to work together.
8. What did the author decide to do after finding his blind spot in reading?
A. To read more works in translation.
B. To read a book from every country.
C. To collect stories from across the world.
D. To stop reading books written in English.
9. What does the author suggest we do when reading books with unfamiliar ideas?
A. Find out the blind spots in those books.
B. Stick to our own way of looking at the world.
C. Choose to read the parts we are comfortable with.
D. Use unfamiliar ideas to improve our own thinking.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why cultural differences exist.
B. Why bookshelves are important.
C. How a book can tell about a country.
D. How reading various books benefits the author.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. An educational website. B. A government report.
C. A research paper. D. A business magazine.
D
At Saorsa 1875 in Scotland, animals aren蒺t allowed
—
but not in the traditional sense. While pets
are more than welcome, the hotel is, actually, the UK蒺s first fully vegan
(严格素食主义的)
hotel.
Veganism is taking root all across the world and the movement shows no signs of slowing
down. Brands are realizing the trend: from plant鄄based hamburgers to cruelty鄄free clothing, restau鄄
rants and businesses are increasingly catering to vegan consumers
—
especially those whose ethics
(道德观)
are beyond the plate. Now, hotels are stepping up too.
“
At Saorsa 1875, everything from arrival to departure is vegan,
”
declares founder Sandra
McLaren鄄Stewart. Set in a 19th鄄century Victorian building, it features 11 rooms furnished with
sheets and pillow covers made from organic cotton, and pillows and quilts free from animal products
such as silk and feather. The vegan concept also applies to cleaning products, while staff uniforms
are ethically sourced. And contrary to popular belief, vegan furnishings don蒺t come with high price
tags.
“
Materials like organic cotton are almost always cheaper than animal鄄based ones such as silk
and feather,
”
McLaren鄄Stewart said.
Naturally, the menu at Saorsa 1875 is 100% plant鄄based too.
“
We get all our food from either
our own vegetable garden or local community farms,
”
says McLaren鄄Stewart. And far from serving
vegan salads, the hotel蒺s chef Luca Sordi serves very amazing plates such as watermelon sashimi
(生鱼片)
with a thick cold white sauce made from eggs.
“
I think there are still some misconceptions around veganism
—
it is not the abstinent
(节制的)
lifestyle that many still think it is,
”
says McLaren鄄Stewart.
“
We want to create a cool and comfort鄄
able place where vegans can stay without feeling like they are compromising on their ethics. Obvi鄄
ously, we appeal to vegans, but we also want to create a judgment鄄free space for anyone with an in鄄
terest in ethical living.
”
12. What does the trend in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The promotion of cruelty鄄free clothing.
B. The popularity of plant鄄based burgers.

One afternoon, Ava drove to her 4鄄year鄄old son蒺s kindergarten to pick him up. When she ar鄄
rived, as usual, her son Noah came running and said,
“
Hi, Mom!
”
It brought a big smile to Ava蒺s
face.
“
Did you have a good day, sweetie?
”
she asked.
“
Yes,
”
Noah replied.
“
Alright, let蒺s get your things and go home,
”
Ava said. Noah sat down on one car seat in the
back, carrying his school bag which contained books, candies, etc. Then, Ava started the car.
“
So
tell me about the PE class today. Did you have fun?
”
Ava asked. Noah said he did and explained
happily. Ava watched traffic while listening to him.
The mother and son were quiet for a couple of minutes. And Ava started to think about what to
make for dinner.
“
How about having some pizza when we get home?
”
Ava asked Noah. When he
didn蒺t answer, Ava wondered what he was thinking. She knew her son liked pizza, but maybe he
wanted something else this time.
“
You like pizza, don蒺t you?
”
Ava asked. Still, Noah didn蒺t answer.
Ava looked over her shoulder, seeing Noah蒺s face turning red. He couldn蒺t speak at all.
“
Oh!
What happened?
”
Ava asked. She had just passed a four鄄way stop, and there was a wide, grassy
shoulder on the road where she pulled off and jumped out of the car. She ran to the other side of the
car and freed Noah from the car seat. His face was still bright red and he couldn蒺t speak. Clearly, he
was choking
(噎住)
!
Ava cried out for help and called 911 while pounding her hand against Noah蒺s back, trying to
save her son. But nothing was changing. Suddenly a tall man appeared next to them and took Noah
from Ava蒺s arms. His truck was parked behind them. He held Noah with the boy蒺s back against his
stomach. And, the man thrust
(猛推 )
his hands into Noah蒺s abdomen
(腹部 )
, trying to remove
whatever was choking him. Still, nothing happened. Then another family pulled over ahead of them.
