Growing cucumbers on the moon might sound like science fiction, but for thousands of Australian students aged seven to ten, that future is now. They are pioneering the ALEPH Project, a groundbreaking world-first mission to establish the first lunar garden by 2026.
Far from being passive observers, these young scientists are the vital engine of the project. They roll up their sleeves to tackle the core objective — figuring out what can actually grow on the moon — through hands-on experimentation. By designing specialized seed delivery systems and uploading findings to a national database, they equip scientists with real-world data for critical decision-making. This Stile Education and Lunaria One partnership has already yielded remarkable results, with over 440 student-led experiments and 200 teams’ data pushing the mission ahead.
Yet the universe isn’t making it easy for these young explorers. The biggest problem is reproducing the tough environment of the moon right in their classroom. While they can use an oven to generate moon-like heat and a special machine to simulate rocket shake, copying the space radiation and zero-gravity that seeds face in space is much harder. This mismatch between Earth-based simulations and what really happens in space makes their project immensely challenging.
To bridge this gap, the students learn through trial and error, like real scientists do. Take the case of 13-year-old Huefner. He discovered moon-like conditions made tomatoes grow taller than the control group, proving science isn’t just formulas, but human curiosity in action. Such stories resonate with the team on a profound level. Lunaria One’s Lauren recalls wanting fresh salad during her space mission, not dry food. “It really hit home how important missions like this are,” she reflects, “as they’re our first steps toward growing fresh food in space.” This direct link from scientific inquiry to future sustenance (生计) sustains their passion.
This project does more than grow plants — it grows future explorers. Ultimately, it brings science to life, because the kids tending these lunar gardens today might just be the ones seeding humanity’s future in space tomorrow — all through their school curriculum.
What is the primary purpose of the ALEPH Project?
A.To modernize experimental learning.
B.To advance off-world farming practice.
C.To evaluate lunar agricultural systems.
D.To stimulate passive scientific minds.
What is the main challenge for these young scientists?
A.Tackling true-to-moon heat modeling.
B.Seeking access to high-end lab equipment.
C.Gaining experience in Earth agriculture.
D.Recreating conditions similar to space.
What does the underlined phrase “hit home” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Caused serious technical arguments.
B.Evaluated novel scientific insights.
C.Struck with deep emotional force.
D.Reached the unexpected destination.
What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Can Classrooms Feed Moon? B.How to Survive Lunar Heat?
C.Who Will Farm in Space? D.Is Off-Earth Salad Beneficial?

Wake up early enough and, depending on where you live, you’ll likely hear a pleasant chorus (合唱) of birds singing their tiny hearts out. Singing in the early morning is the natural behavior of birds. But why do birds sing only in the early morning?
According to the Woodland Trust, a UK-based environmental charity, this early singing is known as the dawn chorus, and it can start as early as 4 a.m. and last for several hours. Birds do it to attract mates (配偶) and warn other birds to avoid their territory. One theory as to why they choose for the early hours to communicate these important messages is because the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like finding food. Keeping their activity level low, they choose to sing instead. Another theory argues that birds use the morning songs to project an image of strength. By singing with passion, they’re letting other birds know they survived the night — no guarantee in nature — and would make for an excellent mate.
Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also allow birds to transmit a distinct sound thanks to the cooler, drier air. Since birds have distinctive calls, that clarity helps them be more easily identified by birds within listening distance.
There used to be a widespread theory that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel greater distances due to less atmospheric turbulence (大气湍流), but it was disproven by researchers at the University of Western Ontario in 2025. They played recordings of sparrows at dawn and midday, coming to a conclusion that rather than traveling farther, sounds were more steady and constant in the mornings. “Birds only have so much energy, so singing when they stand the best chance of being heard makes sense.” they added, “For a bird, an early morning period is like having the perfect sound environment for their performance.”
Which is a reason for birds singing in the early morning?
A.To appeal to their partners. B.To find food for their kids.
C.To warn other birds of danger. D.To guarantee their survival.
How does morning air quality affect birds’ songs?
A.Make them travel further. B.Make them easily followed.
C.Make them sound louder. D.Make them clearly recognized.
What does the research in 2025 suggest?
A.Endless energy offers birds the chance of survival.
B.Birds’ performance is better in a safe environment.
C.Birds’ morning songs have a greater sense of continuity.
D.Less atmospheric turbulence allows greater sound distances.
What can we learn from birds’ morning singing?
A.Strike while the iron is hot.
B.Good things come to those who wait.
C.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
D.Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

A long-overlooked immune organ, the thymus (胸腺), proves to be a hidden indicator of the length of human life, disease risk and cancer treatment outcomes, according to two studies published in Nature by researchers from Mass General Brigham.
For decades, scientists held a fixed belief: the small chest organ gradually gets smaller after puberty (青春期) and stops playing a vital role in adult health, for it produces fewer new T cells, immune cells guarding against infections and illnesses. Thus, the thymus was rarely included in large-scale population research.
To open new “avenues” for related medical study, the team applied AI technology to analyze routine CT scans from over 27,500 adults. They measured the thymus’s size and structure to create a thymic health score. Data showed adults with higher scores gained striking health benefits: roughly 50% lower all-cause death risk, 63% lower heart and blood vessel death risk and 36% reduced lung cancer risk, even after excluding the interference of age and other health conditions. Researchers explained poor thymic health cuts T-cell diversity, weakening the immune system’s ability to spot cancer or other diseases. Besides, smoking, overweight and chronic inflammation (慢性炎症) are confirmed to damage thymic health.
Another separate experiment tracked more than 1,200 cancer patients receiving immune treatment. Patients with healthier thymuses had a 37% lower cancer progression risk and 44% lower death risk, which indicates the thymus state largely affects the effect of modern cancer immune treatment and opens new avenues for cancer treatment.
The scientists emphasize that additional studies will be needed to confirm the results. They also note that the imaging technique used to measure thymic health is not yet ready for routine use in clinical practice. Though unhealthy lifestyles connect with poor thymus, the studies fail to confirm whether adjusting these habits can recover thymic function. Further research will explore hidden factors affecting thymic health.
What is the previous opinion about the thymus?
A.It works well for adults all the time.
B.It can cure different kinds of cancers.
C.It is widely checked in daily hospital tests.
D.It becomes less important for adults after puberty.
What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.CT scans are used to cure heart and lung diseases directly.
B.Age difference is the only cause of bad thymic health conditions.
C.High thymic health scores lower risks of several serious illnesses.
D.People with lower scores have no chance to suffer from lung cancer.
What does the underlined word “avenues” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.City roads. B.Patient groups.
C.Medical tools. D.Research approaches.
What is the text mainly about?
A.The development of cancer treatment in recent years.
B.How AI helps doctors check different kinds of illnesses.
C.New studies on the little-known thymus and its health value.
D.Several useful ways to prevent heart disease and lung cancer.

Should Mobile Phones be used in Education?
The widespread use of mobile phones has changed how we communicate daily, but their place in education is still a matter of debate. Some feel mobile phones can serve as a useful tool for learning. 36 Rather than listening to the teachers carefully in class, they use their devices (设备) to text, play games, watch videos or even try to cheat by taking photos of tests.
37 According to a survey, some students keep checking their phones, texting or going on social media. Some students even spend up to 12 hours daily on their mobile phones. As a result, they usually fall asleep in class.
Educators are exploring ways to monitor (监控) students’ using mobile phone effectively. For example, France has made a law that doesn’t allow students under 15 to use mobile phones in school. Schools have begun to use special boxes to keep students’ phones during school time. 38 The idea of limiting mobile phone use isn’t just happening in a few schools. Over 30 schools in France have put some kind of limit on mobile phone use this year or last year, with different areas making their own rules about phones.
39 The teachers in these schools believe that students have grown up with mobile phones. They think it’s their job to teach students how to use mobile phones the right way as a learning tool. They also teach about how to use phones properly, including how to be responsible with social media and the Internet. 40 In their eyes, the technology has already existed, so schools should use it to help students and not fear it.
A.In this way they won’t be encouraged to use them.
B.It’s impossible that mobile phones can destroy a child.
C.They regard it as part of changing education for children.
D.The problem of students using mobile phones in class is a real worry.
E.There is a chance that students are improperly using their mobile phones.
F.In fact, without proper guidance, mobile phones can discourage the learning experience.
G.However, some schools have decided to allow students to use mobile phones when necessary.

This is a true story of my grandfather James. In the 1930s, Grandpa was a school kid and took a part-time job in a theater. One day, during a break when the audience were going to the bathroom, he was shocked to see three very huge rats which crossed the aisles (过道) and went under the seats. Grandpa feared the audience would be hurt.
When the movie was over, Grandpa told the manager what he saw. The manager was anxious, and said they couldn’t use poisons to drive the rats away. Grandpa suggested putting cats in the theater at night when it was closed. The manager agreed and gave grandpa the task of putting the cats in the theater at night, but grandpa had to be there in the morning to remove the cats and any dead rat that might be around.
The next day, grandpa found two cats. At the end of the night when the movie was over, he brought the cats into the theater as “night guards”. Then, he left and headed home, excitedly thinking about how many dead rats there would be when he went to the theater in the morning.
The next morning, grandpa hurried to the theater to take care of the cats and all of those dead rats before he went to school. After reaching the theater, he opened the front door, to his surprise, the two cats rushed out of the door and down the street at once. Confused, grandpa entered the theater and turned on the light. To his surprise, he couldn’t find one dead rat.
Soon, grandpa and the manager found out that the rats were so big that the cats were actually scared of them. Grandpa wondered how to deal with the problem. When grandpa got home from school that day, he told his parents what had happened. They laughed and told him that the best way was to get a Rat Terrier dog. They said it’s a type of dog that is good at killing rats. Although grandpa doubted it, he decided to have a try.

W: Now it’s 8:00 am, time for the educational report. GCSE is the British exam taken by the students in England and Wales around the age of 16. Recently researchers at a university have confirmed the doubt of many parents and employers that some GCSEs are easier than others.
The researchers found that sciences and modern languages were the hardest GCSEs to do well in. Chemistry was the hardest of the major subjects followed by physics and French. Drama was the easiest GCSE to do well in, followed by physical education, media studies, English and English literature. The number of test takers in physical education rose faster than in any other subjects last year. 147,500 students sat GCSEs in physical education last summer. However, it was a problem for the country if pupils avoided hard subjects. Fewer people would go on to study languages or sciences at university, even though they were important to Britain’s future development.

根据最后一段 “In this program, students will learn carpentry and power tool skills to participate in construction projects, ranging from home repair to woodshed building.”
根据 Service Adventures 部分 “Work and live at the base of the Wrangell Mountains in an Athabascan Native village for three weeks.”
根据第一段中 “They are pioneering the ALEPH Project, a groundbreaking world‑first mission to establish the first lunar garden by 2026.” 以及第二段 “figuring out what can actually grow on the moon” 可知,ALEPH 项目核心是建立月球花园,推进地外农业实践。
根据第三段中 “The biggest problem is reproducing the tough environment of the moon right in their classroom.” 以及 “This mismatch between Earth‑based simulations and what really happens in space makes their project immensely challenging.”
根据第四段中 “Lauren recalls wanting fresh salad during her space mission, not dry food…as they’re our first steps toward growing fresh food in space.”
根据第二段 “Birds do it to attract mates (配偶) and warn other birds to avoid their territory.”
根据第三段 “Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also allow birds to transmit a distinct sound thanks to the cooler, drier air. Since birds have distinctive calls, that clarity helps them be more easily identified by birds within listening distance.”
根据第四段 “They played recordings of sparrows at dawn and midday, coming to a conclusion that rather than traveling farther, sounds were more steady and constant in the mornings.”
文章最后一段提到 “For a bird, an early morning period is like having the perfect sound environment for their performance.” 以及 “singing when they stand the best chance of being heard makes sense.”,说明鸟类懂得利用清晨最佳的声学环境来发声,以达到最好的效果。
定位第二段 “For decades, scientists held a fixed belief: the small chest organ gradually gets smaller after puberty and stops playing a vital role in adult health”。 A 与原文观点相反;B 文中无依据;C 根据本段 the thymus was rarely included in large-scale population research 可知表述错误。
定位第三段 “Data showed adults with higher scores gained striking health benefits: roughly 50% lower all-cause death risk, 63% lower heart and blood vessel death risk and 36% reduced lung cancer risk”。
定位第四段 “the thymus state largely affects the effect of modern cancer immune treatment and opens new avenues for cancer treatment”。
F 项 “In fact, without proper guidance, mobile phones can discourage the learning experience.”
D 项 “The problem of students using mobile phones in class is a real worry.”
A 项 “In this way they won’t be encouraged to use them.” 故选 A 项。
G 项 “However, some schools have decided to allow students to use mobile phones when necessary.”
C 项 “They regard it as part of changing education for children.”

As he opened the door, he spotted several dead rats on the floor. The dog lay quietly beside the seats, looking proud. The manager was delighted to see the amazing result. Thanks to the smart dog, the theater finally got rid of the huge rats. Grandpa gained valuable experience and high praise from the manager for his persistence and wisdom.
