C We know it蒺s good to learn another language. It opens doors, makes us more employable and helps us make new friends. And it蒺s fun, too. But to improve our linguistic skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. It蒺s no wonder that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning. There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smartphone means you can have a virtual teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are keen to cash in on the demand, and there are numerous learning apps available. One of many popular apps, Duolingo, offers 91 courses in 30 languages and has more than 300 million users. Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes or at most universities. And others offer “ invented ” language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek蒺s Klingon — lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace and fit learning around other commitments. However, they蒺re not perfect — you might not get your head round the grammar and lack the support you get from your classmates in a classroom environment. So, does technology imply the end of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He says that apps should be used alongside classroom methods, not to the exclusion (排除) of traditional teaching. And he adds, “ The apps are very conversational...they蒺re not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources. ” Certainly, technology is helping in and outside the classroom. But attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher, probably forces you to be more committed. But if you have a genuine and practical reason to learn another language, you will no doubt stick with it. 8. What is the text mainly about? A. The huge demand for language learning. B. The vital importance of virtual learning. C. Ways to improve learning in a classroom. D. Strengths and weaknesses of virtual learning. 9. What do the examples in Paragraphs 2 and 3 suggest? A. The availability of learning through apps. B. The popularity of foreign language learning. C. The difficulty in improving linguistic skills. D. The diversity of educational app developers. 10. What can be a weakness of studying in a virtual classroom? A. Emphasis on grammar. B. Absence of peer support. C. Less flexible timetable. D. Much fiercer competition. 11. What is Guy Baron蒺s attitude towards educational apps? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Ambiguous. D. Objective. D In studying how animals eat, researchers learned about the human diet in the process. They found that humans have five distinct appetites that work together to make sure we get the proper amount of nutrients our bodies need to work efficiently. “ It is a mistake to think of appetite as a single, powerful drive to eat, ” researchers David Raubenheimer and Stephen Simpson write in New Scientist. “ We need separate appetites to keep track of various nutrients, and hence to construct a balanced diet. ” The five appetites are for protein, carbohydrates (碳水化合物 ), fats, sodium and calcium. “ Those five have been singled out by evolution for good reasons, ” they write. “ One is that there is a limit to how complex biological systems can get and still operate efficiently. We couldn蒺t have specific appetites for dozens of nutrients. Another is that these nutrients are needed in very specific quantities. Third, some components, like sodium, were often rare in our ancestral environments and we needed dedicated machinery to seek them out, for example in mineral deposits. ” As researchers at the University of Oxford in the 1990s, Raubenheimer and Simpson started their appetite experiment by putting 200 locusts in individual boxes. They created 25 foods that were combinations of protein and carbs at different concentrations. Each locust was fed just one of the food combinations until they reached maturity. They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. The researchers found that although the locusts were on a limited diet, they tended to eat the ideal amount of protein. For those that were on a low鄄protein diet, they overate carbs to get the pro鄄 tein they needed. For those that were on the high鄄protein diet, they ate too few carbs to keep their protein levels at the correct amount. “ This showed that when locusts are given imbalanced foods, the appetites for protein and carbohydrates compete, and protein wins, ” the researchers write. The researchers repeated their work in a way with humans. In an experiment, ten volunteers were broken into two groups. One group ate from a high鄄protein buffet (自助餐) , while the other chose from a low鄄protein, high鄄carb, and high鄄fat buffet. Those on the low鄄protein diet ate more calories and carbs to get the protein they needed. Those on high鄄protein diets consumed fewer calo鄄 ries. “ Our modern lives are filled with ultra鄄processed products. Ultra鄄processed foods make us fat, but not because we have strong appetites for the fats and carbs they contain, as is often thought to be the case. Rather, it is because our appetite for protein is stronger than our ability to limit fat and carb intake. So, when protein is diluted (稀释) by fats and carbs, our appetite for it overwhelms the mechanisms that normally tell us to stop eating fats and carbs. ” 英语 (三) 第 3 页 (共 8 页) 英语 (三) 第 4 页 (共 8 页) 14 线 封 弥 学 校 班 级 姓 名 考 号 考 试 科 目 弥 封 线 内 不 准 答 题 12. When was the last time you went to your local library? Last week? A month ago? A year ago? For many reasons, fewer people borrow books from libraries. With advances in technology, it is now possible for people to download and read whatever they like on electronic devices such as Kindles at any time. It has been argued that doing this is cheaper than buying hard鄄copy books. 16 Call me old鄄fashioned (守旧的) . 17 I like to have printed books lining my bookshelves. I love the smell of a new book and I enjoy leafing through paper pages. Besides, libraries offer a quiet place to sit, read, think and do research, and a real escape from the outside world. When I was at university, I often spent hours at the library and borrowed numerous journals, articles and other printed materials, as it was just too expensive to buy new books every week. 18 They蒺re particu鄄 larly suitable for students. 19 At home, my local library hosted actors, historians and other speakers during the town蒺s yearly art and literature festival. Well鄄known authors are also invited to libraries to give speeches or lead discussions about their work. These events are a great way to attract people of all ages in the community. 20 There are still many fantastic ways to use libraries. Maybe we just need to try to recognise them. A. Libraries are free. B. I蒺ve never got into the e鄄book. C. I made friends with the school librarian. D. Libraries often organise a series of interesting activities. E. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their home. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that. Melati didn蒺t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn蒺t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace. “ So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It蒺s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can蒺t we do something to get it back? ” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fas鄄 cinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy. They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “ How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you! ” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1 : Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away.
