Many Chinese people will wonder what gifts to get for their moms on Mother’s Day, but not many know Mother’s Day is actually a festival from America, which started in the early 20th century and usually falls on the second Sunday of May. The festival came to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.
Why does a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always educated children to love and respect (尊敬) their parents. From our textbooks, we can read many poems and stories which celebrate (庆祝) mother’s love. Children in China grow up with the education of filial devotion (孝敬). On such a special day, people often use flowers or cards to express love. Carnations (康乃馨) are regarded as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily (虎百合). Like most of Chinese children, I’m too shy to say to my mom “I love you, mom” face to face. Instead, I will do what I can to show how much I love her. Mother’s Day is on the way, I’m going to send my mom a bunch of tiger lily. Also, helping with housework is a good way to make my mom happy.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple (简单的) expression of love from their children.

The annual Water Splashing Festival falls during the New Year celebrations of the Dai Calendar.
It is the most important festival celebrated by the Dai ethnic people of Xishuangbanna. It involves three days of celebrations that include sincere, yet light-hearted religious rituals that end in everyone’s getting wet all over.
The first two days’ activities are concentrated on the banks of the Lancang River. A grand celebration marks the beginning of the festival. An out-door market is set up, where locals go for new-year shopping and tourists go for local souvenirs. Local food and snacks are other highlights travelers may not want to miss. Artists create sand carvings on open space close to the market. A dragon boat race is held on the Lancang River in the afternoon to say goodbye to the old year. At night, the banks of the river are colorfully lit, and tourists can enjoy the floating river lanterns made by locals. This practice is thought to drive bad luck away and bring good luck.
The third day, the climax of the festival, is reserved for water splashing. On that day, the Dai put on their newest and best clothes, and then gather at the local Buddhist temple. Afterward, a symbolic water splashing ritual is held near a Buddhist statue. People first worshiped the Buddha, and then gathered at the courtyard outside the temple, ready to be splashed with water.
The Water Splashing ceremony, however, is more than just good-natured fun; it also contains a religious element: water is regarded by the Dai as a symbol, firstly, of religious purification, but also of goodwill among people. Therefore, splashing a person with water during the festival, whether a close neighbor or a stranger, is an expression of the desire for good luck to that person.

3.How can the Dai drive bad luck away and bring good luck?
