I'm Ruby. I do not believe in aliens. I understand your reason that the universe is quite large. And I understand that there should be other intelligent lives in the universe. But we are quite intelligent and have explored many parts of the universe. If aliens were there, don't you think we would have found them by now?

It was a dark night. The whole Greentown was covered by dark clouds. Chris was on his way home. It started raining all of a sudden. And soon it rained cats and dogs.
Suddenly he saw a UFO appearing from the clouds above. In no time it landed on the road. Three aliens came out from the spaceship. To Chris's surprise, he could understand their language. Their plan was to take all the trees away from the Earth and plant them on their own planet. Not wasting a moment, Chris called his friends. Those aliens pointed to a tree. A terrible blue light shot out from their hands, making the tree disappear.

Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists have said “No.” or “We don't know.” But today it's changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe there's intelligent life somewhere in the universe and we will soon communicate with these beings (生物).
教与学 学导练 英语 八年级 下册 配上海教育版
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 13 billion years old. “It's long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) show there are at least 100 billion galaxies (星系),” says Shostak. “ Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the Earth.”
教与学 学导练 英语 八年级 下册 配上海教育版
Long ago, looking for signs of intelligent life in the universe was hard. Now, powerful telescopes let scientists discover smaller planets, the size of Mars or the Earth, in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space visited the Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as with radio signals (信号). Actually, they may be trying to communicate with us, but we don't have right tools to receive their messages. However, it's changing. Soon, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”
