I started playing football when I was 7 or 8 years old after my brothers had agreed to let their little sister join in their games. I’m from a very small town and at that time no other girls played football in my town. People said football wasn’t for women and my family shouldn’t let me play. They also said I wouldn’t make it, and that I wasn’t good enough.
As a child, I didn’t really understand why people were so against me playing when I could play it well! I fought back by showing my talent (天赋) on the streets.
My greatest inspiration was my mother. We came from a poor family; my mom separated from my dad when I was less than a year old and she raised four children on her own. She worked all day, had little time to spend with us, but she never gave up. I found my strength from her to keep going.
Every win is important for me, from the time when I was playing in amateur (业余的) teams among the boys to the first win as part of the Brazilian national team, and now. I remember when I went back to my town in 2006 after winning the award for the best female player in the world. When I arrived, it was nearly midnight and the whole town was awake, waiting for me. I got into a fireman’s truck and people were waving. That achievement could happen because I hadn’t given up that first moment I heard a “no”.
Sport changed my life completely. It gave me the opportunity (机会) to help my family, meet other people, see other countries and experience other cultures. Sport is a tool for empowering girls, because it gives you the opportunity to do what you want and learn to respect the differences between people.
For me, it’s a great honor to be a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使). Today, I am here to use my story to inspire many more girls and women and to create opportunities so that next generation doesn’t have to go through what I did.
4. What was the author’s family’s attitude toward her playing football at first?
A. They were uncertain about it. B. They were supportive of it.
C. They were strongly against it. D. They thought it must be painful.
5. What happened to the author when she returned home in 2006?
A. She learnt to say “no” for the first time.
B. She had little time to spend with her family.
C. She got a chance to play for the national team.
D. She was warmly welcomed by the whole town.
6. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Creative. B. Humorous. C. Strong-willed. D. Self-centered.
7. What does the author call on girls and women to do?
A. Play football just like her.

The last known eggs of the Great Bustard (鸨) were taken in 1832, and the bird was nearly extinct by the end of the 19th century, a victim of hunters. In 2004, the endangered species was reintroduced to Salisbury Plain, with the aim of establishing a self-sustaining population here.
The Great Bustard Group (GBG), the charity behind the release, was set up in 1997 and it has now been 16 years since the initial 10-year trial began. Long-term volunteers Fred and Rona Andrews have been involved from the start and, working as part of a team, have helped raise over 200 chicks from eggs sourced abroad.
“For the first week the chick needs to have food placed in its bill, so we use a feeding puppet to imitate the behavior of the parent,” explains Fred. “It is quite hard when the bustards are young because they need feeding every hour and it takes a long time to feed one.”
Great Bustards reach maturity at about five years old. “Seeing the first wild bred chick out on Salisbury Plain in 2009, shortly after it hatched, was a proud moment for me,” says Rona. On average, 12 chicks are released each year on to Salisbury Plain and in 2018 the survival rate was 100 percent.
“The aim has been to reach a population of 100 birds,” says GBG executive officer David Waters. “Now we have that number, and we are hoping the population will continue to grow by natural reproduction.”
“Being involved with the world’s heaviest bird alive today that can fly has given us both a greater knowledge of birds, conservation and farming,” states Rona. “We are contributing to an important conservation project that also benefits other species.”
8. Why did the GBG reintroduce Great Bustards to Salisbury Plain?
A. To test their chance of survival.
B. To increase species diversity there.
C. To help save the threatened species.
D. To help the local bustards raise chicks.
9. What does Fred say about feeding the young bustards?
A. It is dangerous. B. It is demanding.
C. It is interesting. D. It is fairly costly.
10. What does David Water expect of Great Bustards?
A. They will survive on their own.
B They will reach a population of 100.
C. They will hatch 12 chicks each year.
D. They will live in peace with other species.
11. What is Rona’s attitudes towards the project?
A. Critical. B. Conservative.
C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.

At any given moment, about seven microliters of tears are present in each of our eyes-about a tenth of a drop of water. Tears are more than salty water—they deliver oxygen and nutrients to our eyes, remove waste and serve as the first line of defense against disease.
Research has shown that markers of many of the most common diseases like cancer are found in tears. Work is already under way to confirm the use of such markers for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a technology named TearExo has been developed for breast cancer screening using patients' tears. That could greatly reduce the costs of testing.
Actually, the potential merits of tears as indicators of health go beyond occasional testing. One promising tear-based technology is a smart contact lens that continuously monitors a patient's biomarkers, significantly improving disease prevention and early detection. Recently, a smart contact lens has been successfully developed for continuous glucose monitoring and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Such a product probably won't be ready for commercial use for several years. However, about 45 million people in the US already wear contact lenses to correct their vision, so switching to a smart version will be simple for them.
Interestingly, NASA ever suggested using tear markers to monitor astronauts' health in space. This allowed us to better understand the effects on human health of long-term exposure to space environmental factors like weightlessness. Tear markers from experienced astronauts and new astronauts without space exposure could be used to establish a health database, which might be one of the first stepping stones toward making living in space a reality.
Tears can provide an inexpensive, rapid and easy-to-use alternative to monitor health. Given the advantage in tear technology to monitor health, and to be used even by the healthy, such technology will almost certainly lead to the more effective prevention of diseases—rather than having to deal with the difficulties of treating them.
17. How does the author show the use of tears in testing?
A. By listing data. B. By using remarks.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
18. What does the underlined word "merits" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Limitations. B. Amounts. C. Expenses. D. Advantages.
19. What can we know about the tear-based contact lens?
A. It can hardly correct our vision. B. It helps to detect diseases continuously.
C. It has been used commercially. D. It can successfully cure eye illnesses.
20. What does the author think of tear technology?
A. It serves as a basis for space exposure. B. It can free astronauts of weightlessness.
C. It monitors health effectively but slowly. D. It has a bright future in the medical field.
【答案】17. C 18. D 19. B 20. D

六、书面表达
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Running has always been a big part of my life. It was an easy and cheap way to stay healthy when I was a teenager and at university. As I got older, I kept running though I took on the responsibilities of being a mom, having a job and other hobbies. Running was a fun activity that I could do quickly and then get back to my busy day.
When I moved to a new city, I was excited about trying new foods, visiting new places, meeting new people and having new experiences. But, I also felt lonely and really wanted to make new friends. I joined a book club and a dinner group. But after a few months, I still felt like I hadn’t made any close friends.
One day, someone asked me if I wanted to run in a half marathon. Without thinking, I said, “Sure, count me in!” A half marathon is 13.1 miles, which is a lot longer than the three miles I usually ran. I was a bit scared, but also excited.
After the shock wore off, I started to learn everything about running a half marathon. I even bought my first pair of really good running shoes. They were the most expensive shoes I’d ever owned. I was ready to start training with them.
My new running friends picked me up at my house, and we started to jog together. I took it slow at first, running one mile, then two. They taught me how to run properly and how to drink enough water. I learned new words like chafing, carb loading, strides, and electrolytes. I slowly built up to running three, four and five miles. Running seven miles straight felt like climbing a really high mountain, and I started to love the feeling I got after a long run.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The day of the race finally came. I stood at the starting line, my heart pounding with excitement and nerves. The announcer counted down, and then the race began. I took off at a sprint, my legs pumping and my arms swinging as I tried to find my rhythm. As I ran, I could feel the sweat starting to bead on my forehead. The sun beat down on me, but I pushed through, focusing on the sound of my breath and the rhythm of my feet hitting the pavement. I passed other runners, feeling a surge of adrenaline each time I passed someone. As I approached the final stretch, I gave it everything I had left. My legs felt like lead, but I pushed through the pain. I could see the finish line in the distance, and it fueled my determination.
All the training I had done was now paying off. I crossed the finish line first! The crowd roared as I crossed the finish line, and I collapsed to the ground, exhausted but elated. Everyone applauded for me and congratulated me on winning the game. A feeling of excitement and satisfaction seized me. I was really grateful for the tremendous changes that running had brought to my body and mind.

B. They will reach a population of 100.
C. They will hatch 12 chicks each year.
D. They will live in peace with other species.
11. What is Rona’s attitudes towards the project?
A. Critical. B. Conservative.
C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.

Exercising helps your lungs and heart work better, resulting in higher energy levels. Besides, it helps you create discipline which is also a necessary element of success.
