At age 10, McCullough got a glimpse of her dream job. It sparkled in the eyes of the Packard Children’s nurses who cared for her brother Matthew, who had brain cancer. As a child, McCullough spent hours at her brother’s bedside. “I looked up to the nurses. I found their unconditional commitment to my brother’s care remarkable," McCullough says.
As a young girl, McCullough practiced nursing by caring for her brother, a desire born out of her intense love for him. She would rub his back, bring him drinks, and even help adjust his lines. She was a natural. Her parents said that she was very caring and always put people first from a young age.
When Matthew passed away, McCullough became even more committed to becoming a nurse. She took steps through the years to make her dream come true. In high school, she volunteered at cancer centers and hospitals. “My becoming a nurse is 100% in honor of Matt. I felt the need to channel my grief and turn that tragic moment into something positive," McCullough says.
Over time, McCullough realized that she didn’t just want to be a nurse. She wanted to be a pediatric oncology (儿科肿瘤) nurse at Packard Children’s. McCullough wanted to give back to the hospital that had done so much for her brother.
Despite feeling like school never came easy, McCullough persisted and got into a respected nursing school. She feels like she worked 10 times harder than other nursing students at the university. She traded going out and spending time with friends for the library.
In college, each step brought McCullough closer to her dream. She worked as a nursing assistant at Stanford Health Care for adults with cancer. Then, she transferred to Packard Children’s and worked as a nursing assistant in the Pediatric Transplant Center.
Today, She’s a nurse on the same unit that cared for her brother years ago. She is one of those nurses she admired so much as a child. She finds the time, even on very busy days, to truly be there for patients and families to make them feel loved and welcomed.

Trust me, you don’t want to get caught under a tsunami! Tsunamis are one of the world’s most powerful natural forces. They can cause huge amounts of damage.
But do you know exactly what a tsunami is? They are huge, powerful waves in the ocean that grow as they reach the shore. Most tsunamis are actually caused by earthquakes. An earthquake happens when a big piece of the Earth’s crust( 地 壳 ) suddenly moves. When the piece of ocean floor moves, it creates big holes. The water floods in to fill these holes. When the water moves that quickly, it creates a huge wave. This is how tsunamis are born!
Other natural disasters like landslides, volcanic eruptions, and glaciers breaking off can also cause tsunamis. Once the water starts moving because of the force of the disaster, large waves begin to spread. These waves can move very fast. They have been recorded at speeds from 400 up to 500 miles per hour! They can also move across very long distances.
At first, the waves of the tsunami may not seem that tall. That’s because when the waves travel through the deep parts of the ocean, the top of each wave is very short. But as that wave comes near to the coast, it grows in height. Remember, the tsunami travels quickly. If you are sitting on a beach, you may not see the wave coming at first. But when the wave arrives, it will be like a towering wall of water. Some waves are as tall as 100 feet high. The biggest tsunami ever recorded happened in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The wave was over 1,720 feet tall, and it wiped out trees, vegetation, and everything else in its way.
As frightening as tsunamis can be, you don’t need to worry too much about them. They don’t happen that often. Only about two tsunamis happen every year. And it is said that serious, really damaging tsunamis only happen about every fifteen years. So don’t worry.
8. Based on the information in the article, which natural disaster is not responsible for causing a tsunami?
A. tornado B. volcanic eruption C. earthquake D. landslides
9. If a tsunami forms in the deep ocean, 2,000 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, how long at least will it take the tsunami to reach the coast of Sri Lanka ?
A. 2 hours B. 3 hours C. 4 hours D. 5 hours
10. Which of the following about tsunami is true?
A. The waves of the tsunami always move slowly over a long distance.
B. People on a ship in the deep ocean will notice a tsunami at once as soon as it forms.
C. When people on the beach first notice a tsunami, the waves are not tall.
D. People will not notice a tsunami until it gets close to the coast.
11. Where would this passage most likely to be found?
A. in a newspaper B. in a science magazine C. in a textbook D. in a story book

On the crowded supermarket shelves, food products with carefully designed packaging and labels draw attention. Some 72% of American consumers say that product packaging influences their purchase decisions — a statistic not lost on food manufacturers(生产商).
Louis Biscotti, the National Leader for Food & Beverage Services Group at Marcum, writes in Forbes that when the FDA updated its nutrition facts label for packaged foods in 2020, food companies found they could use those labels on their packaging to provide nutritional and other data to boost sales.
He adds that 30% of U. S. consumers surveyed are more likely to buy products with sustainable credentials(认证)and that “clean label” characteristics can win over consumers. Labeling can be very helpful when determining certain things about a food item. “USDA Organic”, “free of preservatives” and “raised without antibiotics”, for example, have specific standards, and the product will need to be true to those claims.
However, a new report takes a look at the “natural” claims on food packaging and the result is eye-opening. “Food suppliers use the label that claims the food is ‘natural’ at a relatively low cost because regulatory agencies treat the claim as meaning nothing artificial was added and the product was minimally processed,” the authors explain. “Natural” claims like “all natural”, “100% natural” and “made with natural ingredients” are not defined in regulations. “Neither the FDA’s nor USDA’s policy decisions address the health benefits or crop production methods consumers might assign to natural-labeled foods,” write the authors. However, many people think a product labeled “natural” delivers benefits far beyond what it does.
At first, it might simply seem upsetting that food manufacturers are capitalizing on consumers’ innocence to boost prices and that consumers aren’t getting what they think they’re getting. But the more serious problem is how this harms food producers who are actually meeting the standards for stricter labels that are actually doing good, like ones around organic practices or animal welfare. Farmers and producers doing the work end up at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace if consumers treat foods labeled “natural” as alike.
12. How do food companies try to attract consumers according to the text?
A. By increasing food nutrition. B. By cutting the number of labels.
C. By taking advantage of packaging. D. By selling food products at a discount.
13. What do the underlined words “the product” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A preservative claimed to be harmless. B. A “clean” label with specific standards.
C. A kind of unpopular but healthy food. D. A food item with claims on the label.
14. What does the new report find about the “natural” claims on food packaging?
A. They are unrelated to food processing. B. They reveal the good effects of food.
C. They don’t guarantee health benefits. D. They involve crop production methods.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Food manufacturers’ novel sales strategies. B. The impact of consumers’ misconceptions.
C. The well-accepted standard for stricter labels. D. Victims of unhealthy food in the marketplace.
【答案】12 C 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第一段“Some 72% of American consumers say that product packaging influences their purchase decisions — a statistic not lost on food manufacturers (生产商).(大约72%的美国消费者表示,产品包装会影响他们的购买决定——这一数据并未被食品生产商忽视)”及第二段“… food companies found they could use those labels on their packaging to provide nutritional and other data to boost sales.(……食品公司发现,他们可以在包装上使用这些标签来提供营养信息和其他数据,以促进销售)”可知,食品公司利用包装吸引消费者。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Labeling can be very helpful when determining certain things about a food item. ‘USDA Organic’, ‘free of preservatives’ and ‘raised without antibiotics’, for example, have specific standards, and the product will need to be true to those claims.(在确定食品的某些情况时,标签会非常有帮助。例如,‘USDA有机’、‘不含防腐剂’和‘无抗生素饲养’等标签都有具体的标准,该产品需要符合这些声明)”可知,the product指的是标签上有声明的食品。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“‘Natural’ claims like ‘all natural’, ‘100% natural’ and ‘made with natural ingredients’ are not defined in regulations.(‘天然’、‘100%天然’和‘采用天然成分制成’等声明在法规中并没有定义)”和“However, many people think a product labeled ‘natural’ delivers benefits far beyond what it does.(然而,许多人认为标有‘天然’的产品所带来的好处远远超出了其实际所带来的好处)”可知,新报告发现食品包装上的“天然”声明不能保证健康益处。
根据最后一段“At first, it might simply seem upsetting that food manufacturers are capitalizing on consumers’ innocence to boost prices and that consumers aren’t getting what they think they’re getting. But the more serious problem is how this harms food producers who are actually meeting the standards for stricter labels that are actually doing good, like ones around organic practices or animal welfare. Farmers and producers doing the work end up at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace if consumers treat foods labeled “natural” as alike.(起初,食品制造商利用消费者的无知来提高价格,而消费者却没有得到他们认为应得的产品,这可能只是让人感到不安。

故填a。
故填with。

故填to connect。
故填it。
分析句子可知,此处为介词during+关系代词which引导的非限制性定语从句,先行词Gurnah’s first China trip在从句中作during的宾语成分,满足从句中during Gurnah’s first China trip“在古尔纳首次中国之行期间”的意思,此处为介词during的前置。故填which。

I spent 15 years trying to make it in the music industry. When I was a teenager, I did any odd job to afford time in a recording studio. I knocked at managers’ doors and sent out demo (录音样带) after demo, but I got nowhere. In 2010, aged 27, I was doing a job in a restaurant when I wrote a song called Dream Goes On. It was a song about never giving up. I just let out all of my frustrations at the keyboard.
Over the next five years, the music career never materialized but I persisted. Then, in 2019, I uploaded Dream Goes On to a music-sharing website. I just wanted someone to notice my music.
Later that year, I received an email out of the blue from Music World from South Korea, requesting a license for the song. They had chosen my song from the millions on the music-sharing website for a theme tune for one of their shows. I was amazed and negotiated a contract for $5,000 for the use of the song and signed up straight away. I was pretty excited, but didn’t think anything more would come of it, so I focused on my job in the restaurant.
This February, Music World organized a musical festival in Seoul and my song Dream Goes On was also chosen as the theme tune for the festival. I watched on YouTube as my song was being played to a huge crowd of people. It was amazing.
After three days of the festival, I was contacted by Music World and they asked if I’d like to go to Seoul to sing Dream Goes On in a concert. They flew me out there the next day. I was welcomed like a celebrity—everyone I met thought I was a big name in England. I had to break the news to them that I wasn’t a pop star.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the concert, I had photographers and journalists battling to interview me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years. Seized by a strong sense of tension, I stood on the stage, seeing the huge cheers and a sea of lights below the stage. I was lost at the moment, holding the microphone tightly. I tried my best to collect myself and began to sing my own song which I had practiced hundreds of times. Looking back the years I had experienced as I sang on the stage, I realized that it is the opportunity that I had been waiting for the whole life. I kept myself full of enthusiasm as I was singing on the stage, showing the best to the audience.
After the concert, I had photographers and journalists battling to interview me. With them around me, a long queue of fans were waiting to have their photograph taken with me. I was like a superstar and that night was like a real dream for me. I had knocked on doors for years, yet my moment came when the opportunity called me. Life can surprise you. It has reinspired my passion for music. This has made all the odd jobs and weekends spent in recording studios all worthwhile.

At age 10 McCullough got a glimpse of her dream job.
4. What makes McCullough want to become a nurse?
A. Her love for her brother. B. The pain of cancer patients.
C. Her natural ability of nursing. D. The volunteering experience.
5. What happened during McCullough’s college life?
A. She volunteered at cancer centers.
B. She worked harder than at high school.
C. She acted as a nursing assistant for children.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years.
