When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock, and shielding soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I created a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24. How did the author use to improve the soil?
A. By adding rich soil. B. By covering it with bags.
C. By removing the weeds. D. By applying chemical fertilizer.
25. What does the underlined word “shielding” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Exposing. B. Separating. C. Sheltering. D. Monitoring.
26. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To explain the process of transplanting. B. To illustrate the prevention of insect attacks.
C. To stress the competition of different species. D. To state the formation of multi-species communities.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild
C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers
A 25. C 26. D 27. A

根据文章第一段“In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.(以前,在那些小得多的花园里,我会用从苗圃买来的几袋优质土壤来改良土壤)”可知,作者过去是通过添加优质土壤来改善土壤的,也就是添加肥沃的土壤。故选A项。
根据划线词上文“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns, prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers, integrating crops, trees and livestock(现代农业的两个核心原则可以指导这一转变:尽量减少土壤扰动和强调生物多样性。在实践中,轮流种植作物;优先使用有机肥料而非化肥;将农作物、树木以及家畜进行整合)”和划线词后面“…soil from being washed away with cover crops (用覆盖作物来……土壤被冲走)”可知,这里说的是一些现代农业的原则及实践方法,提到用覆盖作物来防止土壤被冲走,划线词在此处应是“保护、防护”的意思,与“Sheltering”意思相近。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white lattice of a fungal mycelium.(五月的时候,我决定移栽一株开花植物。
根据文章第二段“The challenge before me was to revitalize the soil. (摆在我面前的挑战是重振土壤)”和最后一段“Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard — it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right.(我用手指穿过土壤,比以往任何时候都更清楚地意识到,我改变的不仅仅是我的院子——它完全改变了我对土壤的看法。它不仅仅是作为生命的媒介,而且本身就是一个有生命的实体)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者打理花园改造土壤的过程,通过实践对土壤有了新的认识,认为土壤不仅仅是生命的介质,它本身就是一个有生命的个体,强调了土壤的重要性及独特“生命力”,因此,A选项“土壤的灵魂”作为标题最为合适,能够概括文章的主旨。故选A项。
C
Good sportsmanship is the practice of engaging in sports with a spirit of fairness, respect, and good manners, regardless of the competitive pressure. It represents the spirits of playing by the rules, honoring both teammates and opponents, and exhibiting grace whether in victory or defeat. The significance of good sportsmanship extends far beyond the playing field. It is vital for maintaining the spirits and integrity of sports.
Athletes who exemplify good sportsmanship help to create a competitive but friendly environment that enhances the enjoyment of the game for everyone involved: players, coaches, officials, and so on. Firstly, good sportsmanship promotes a positive atmosphere that encourages everyone to participate and give their best. It fosters a sense of community and teamwork, which is crucial for collective success in team sports. When athletes display respect and fairness, it helps to build trust and strengthens relationships among team members, which can translate into better performance and more cohesive play. Secondly, good sportsmanship serves as a model for younger athletes, who look up to higher-level players as role models. The behavior exhibited by these role models can significantly influence the attitudes and actions of younger participants towards the sport and competition in general. By practicing good sportsmanship, seasoned athletes set a standard for upcoming generations, teaching them that success is not just about winning but about how you play the game. Moreover, good sportsmanship is essential for the reputation and sustainability of sports.
Negative behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct can damage the public awareness of a sport and can lead to decreased participation rates, sponsorship, and support.
In contrast, sports characterized by high levels of sportsmanship are more likely to be viewed positively, attracting more players and audiences, and increasing the overall reach and impact of the sport. In this way, good sportsmanship not only enhances personal and team success but also upholds the dignity and appeal of sports as a whole. It ensures that sports remain a valuable tool for teaching important life skills such as respect and teamwork.
28. What does paragraph l intend to tell us?
A. The competitive pressure.
B. Good manners in the sports fields.
C. The influence of sportsmanship.
D. True meaning of sportsmanship.
29. Why is good sportsmanship beneficial to younger athletes?
A. It sets a good example to them.
B. It teaches them how to play well.
C. It raises the enjoyment of the game.
D. It creates a competitive environment.
30. Why does the author mention negative behavior in sports?
A. To tell a common phenomenon.
B. To introduce a clear comparison.
C. To criticize bad behavior in sports.
D. To warn us of unsportsmanlike conduct.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What sportsmanship includes?
B. How we can build sportsmanship?
C. Why sportsmanship is important?
D. When sportsmanship gets reflected?
D 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据倒数第二段“Negative behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct can damage the public awareness of a sport and can lead to decreased participation rates, sponsorship, and support.”(负面行为或非体育行为可能会损害公众对一项运动的认知,并可能导致参与率、赞助和支持的减少。)以及最后一段“ In contrast, sports characterized by high levels of sportsmanship are more likely to be viewed positively, attracting more players and audiences, and increasing the overall reach and impact of the sport.”(相比之下,具有良好体育精神特征的运动更有可能被视为积极的,吸引更多的运动员和观众,并增加运动的总体影响力和影响力。)”

Kilos are not the only thing that intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) will help you lose. A new study shows that the wildly popular weight-loss method could also inhibit hair growth.
Intermittent fasting is a time-restricted diet, where the day’s calorie intake is consumed over an 8-12 hour period, with fasting for the remaining hours. Research tracking participants on such diets for three months to a year has shown benefits like weight loss, improved heart health, and better control of blood sugar. These reported benefits have made intermittent fasting a global trend.
However, not all outcomes of intermittent fasting are positive. A recent study published on December 13 in Cell is among the first to link intermittent fasting with hair loss. The study found that intermittent fasting could block hair follicle (毛囊) regeneration by causing programmed cell death in activated hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). Mice subjected to intermittent fasting showed slower hair regeneration compared to those with constant food access. Though similar results were found in humans in a small clinical trial, the researchers cautioned that the effects might be less severe in humans due to their slower body processes and different hair growth patterns.
The researchers discovered that intermittent fasting slows hair growth because hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) struggle to handle oxidative stress (氧化应激) when the body switches from burning sugar to fat for energy. Normally, HFSCs alternate between activity and rest, and hair regrowth depends on these cells becoming active. In the study, mice with constant food access had active HFSCs after being shaved, and their hair regrew normally. However, the fasting mice experienced programmed cell death in their activated HFSCs, preventing hair regrowth.
Although these findings are significant, they are based on initial studies. Larger trials are needed to better understand how intermittent fasting affects hair growth, as individual responses may vary.
32. What does the underlined word “inhibit” mean?
A. Encourage. B. Control. C. Stop. D. Maintain.
33. What was the primary research method used in the study?
A. Animal testing on mice. B. Observational study of diet habits.
C. Laboratory analysis of hair follicles. D. Long-term clinical trial with humans.
34. What prevents hair growth in fasting mice?
A. Different hair growth patterns. B. Slow oxidative stress response.
C. Programmed cell death in HFSCs. D. Activation of hair follicle stem cells.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Intermittent Fasting: A Hairy Side Effect
B. Intermittent Fasting: friendly or frightening?
C. Intermittent Fasting and Hair Loss: A Delicate Balance
D. Intermittent Fasting and Weight Loss: A Complex Link

Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” Dora said. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”
That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” her mother replied. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to go to a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” her mother said. “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” Dora shouted excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.
Paragraph 1:
Dora watched her bird in silence.

Paragraph 2:
When her mother came inside, Dora told her mother about her decision.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Dora watched her bird in silence. She found her bird kept looking out of the window. In the trees outside, many birds were playing gladly. She thought that perhaps her bird didn’t like being kept in the cage at all, just as she hoped to stay with her friends. Before she got sick, she didn’t think a lot about her bird. Now, Dora realized she shouldn’t selfishly take away its freedom for her own enjoyment.
Paragraph 2:
When her mother came inside, Dora told her mother about her decision. She said, “Mom, can you set my bird free?” Her mother was surprised and asked why. “I’m sure it also wants friends,” Dora said. Her mother agreed. She opened the cage and the bird cheerfully flew out of the window. A few days later, Dora could play with her friends again. How excited she was! And when she looked out at the birds in the trees, she knew her bird must be very happy at that moment.

27 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Soul of Soil B. The Vitality of the Wild
C. The Art of Gardening D. The Whisper of Flowers

B Good manners in the sports fields.
A To tell a common phenomenon.
D
