Ⅰ.阅读理解
Symbiotic (共生的) relationships in nature are fascinating.Flowers produce a kind of sweet material so that insects which drink it will be coated in it and carry it to other flowers. They perform a service for each other in exchange for something they value more. However, there is one symbiotic relationship that may be providing rhinos (犀牛) with a life-saving early warning system.
Illegal hunting is famously hard on rhinos. And the oxpecker (啄牛鸟), a bird which you may have seen riding on rhinos while feeding on the parasites (寄生虫) on them, may actually be providing warning calls to help rhinos avoid the danger.Whether the oxpecker is warning the rhino or other oxpeckers of the nearby enemies is unclear, but understanding and depending on other animal signals is a behavior that's well-documented in nature.
Roan Plotz, a scientist, did research on rhinos and tried to find ways to help the endangered rhinos avoid humans. He found the rhinos with oxpeckers on their back could successfully find humans. And those rhinos showed more physical signs of carefulness when humans came close than those that didn't have oxpeckers on their back.Plotz suggests that introducing more oxpeckers into places with high levels of illegal hunting could help reduce the number of rhinos killed.
However, the number of oxpeckers is becoming smaller. The birds feed on parasites on animals, but for decades, farmers used pesticides (杀虫剂) to kill the parasites. This gradually made the oxpeckers have those harmful chemicals in their bodies, causing them to die out in some regions. In turn, many rhinos must live without oxpeckers. So, though pesticides are important to farmers, to protect the rhinos, they must also make efforts to limit the amount of pesticide.
