Mike Brown hopes to restore our nine-planet system with the discovery of another planet. In the January issue, science writer Robin George Andrews describes how a hypothetical orb, humorously called Planet Nine, could explain a strange gravitational force in the outer solar system. Several often-deadly viruses in humans have been linked to bats. But why would Earth’s only flying mammal transmit the attack of pathogens (病原体), and why now? Beijing science writer Jane Qiu tells of groundbreaking research that shows how bats’ unique immune systems allow them to carry harmful viruses. Recent human disturbance of their ecosystems, however, has pushed their immune systems to the breaking point. The result? Bats are now shedding loads of viruses, some of which hop to humans. If you’re interested in dreaming, don’t miss the feature by Michelle Carr, whose research suggests such dreamers can communicate with the waking world. Using new technologies, this communication could allow scientists to engineer a person’s dreams and lead to better sleep and even improved well-being. I hope you enjoy the issue as much as I have! Best wishes, Jeanna Bryner Acting Editor in Chief 1. What can we know from Jane Qiu’s description? A. Humans have brought damage to ecosystems. B. Deadly viruses in humans are all from bats. C. Bats have more advanced immune systems. D. Bats can survive in all sorts of ecosystems. 2. Whose research can directly benefit human’s health? A. Mike Brown. B. Robin George Andrews. C. Jane Qiu. D. Michelle Carr. 3. What’s the purpose of this letter? A. To publicize the latest researches. B. To introduce the newest issue. C. To advertise for subscription. D. To attract readers’ attention. 1. A 2. D 3. We used it to pick up the kids and for farming. Now, we use it to spray pesticides on the seedlings in the village,” Han said, “Just twist the handle, and it goes.” In Mangling town, Yanshi district in Luoyang, Henan province, it’s common for every household to own at least one tricycle. In just a few minutes, one can see dozens of tricycles whizzing by. Sanbengzi got its name from the action of the driver standing on the pedals of the tricycle to ride on bumpy roads, appearing as if they were jumping. The humble vehicle is now growing in popularity overseas. A Chinese video blogger in the United States shipped an electric tricycle from China for her father-in-law. The tricycle became a viral hit, with locals shooting photos and attracted by it. Some even offered to buy it. The iconic “reverse, please be careful...” warning sound has echoed on foreign streets, and content featuring the tricycles has taken short-video platforms by storm. Even Hua Chunying, vice-minister of Foreign Ministry, and Xie Feng, China’s ambassador to the US, have promoted them on social media. Zhufeng, a leading manufacturer in Yanshi, was one of the first to begin exporting tricycles. In 2011, upon hearing about the thriving two-wheeler export business in coastal areas like Guangzhou in Guangdong province, the company took its tricycles to the Canton Fair to try and enter the overseas market. At the fair, there were only one or two three-wheeler manufacturers, and being an exclusive supplier helped it secure foreign buyers. Meanwhile, as environmental concerns rise, electric three-wheelers, offering energy-efficient and low-carbon transportation, are consistent with the global trend toward low-carbon development. 4. What’s the advantage of Sanbengzi according to Han Dengbu? A. It’s eco-friendly. B. It’s cost-effective. C. It’s highly-efficient. D. It’s easily-operated. 5. What can we learn from the tricycle’s popularity overseas? A. Tricycles quickly took up foreign streets. B. The vehicle deeply impressed the locals. C. Social platforms made tricycles easy to access. D. Many people were warned by the iconic sound. 6. Why was Zhufeng able to attract foreign buyers? A. Because the export business was booming. B. Because it could mass-produce tricycles. C. Because tricycles were rare at the fair. D. Because the environment was valued. 7. Which can be a suitable title of this article? A. Sanbengzi: A New Way of Transportation B. Tricycles: On the Fast Road to Global Success C. Zhufeng: A Leading Manufacturer of Tricycles D. Tricycles: A Solution to Environmental Issues 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第三段“In just a few minutes, one can see dozens of tricycles whizzing by. 根据第五段“The tricycle became a viral hit, with locals shooting photos and attracted by it. Some even offered to buy it. 根据最后一段“At the fair, there were only one or two three-wheeler manufacturers, and being an exclusive supplier helped it secure foreign buyers. 根据文章最后一段“Meanwhile, as environmental concerns rise, electric three-wheelers, offering energy-efficient and low-carbon transportation, are consistent with the global trend toward low-carbon development. B C Mindlessly dumping photos on the cloud and forgetting about them entirely is something many of us are guilty of——but tech experts have warned the common habit may end up costing us a fortune. Research from pCloud suggests the average person stores a huge 500GB of data in their personal cloud storage, which equals 137, 237 pictures, and a sharp leap from a decade ago, where the average user had 630 photos and 24 videos stored on their phone. “Think about it——how many of the photos on your phone do you actually look at?” asks Brenda Beltrán of Holafly. Back twenty-five years ago, all our storage was somewhat tangible. CDs, DVDs, printed images etc. took up actual room in our homes, and when it felt like we’d collected too much-we’d simply get rid. But with services like the cloud, that instinct has seemingly disappeared. “But it’s not free, either for your wallet or the planet, ” warns Brenda. “Data centres take up a lot of energy, and while companies like Google are working on making them greener, the volume of stuff being stored is incredible.” The very idea of paying to access your own photos and videos would once sound ludicrous, but the commercialization of digital storage has very quickly become normalised. Most data storage services now charge a monthly fee, which means you’re forever in debt if you want to keep your photos and videos. “This trend will continue, and it’s going to force people to rethink what’s worth keeping,” predicts Taimur Ijlal, a tech expert. James Bore, a security professional, agrees and says that most storage companies have been funded for years by “heavy investments”. “Now that people have much of their digital lives stored with these platforms, they expect to get their investment back,” he added. “The carbon footprint resulting from data storage is mainly due to the energy consumption required in powering the data centres that store massive volumes of information,” said Jacob Kalvo, CEO of Live Proxics. “These centres rely heavily on electricity.” As electricity becomes more and more expensive, the costs of running data centres will also increase——once again putting the financial impact onto the consumer. 8. What can we know from the figures in Paragraph 2? A. People take more photos than before. B. Most of the photos stored are useless. C. Phones now have powerful functions. D. More space is needed for data storage. 9. What’s Brenda’s attitude towards the cloud storage services? A. Favourable. B. Tolerant. C. Critical. D. Ambiguous. 10. What does the underlined word “ludicrous” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Ridiculous. B. Idealistic. C. Expensive. D. Unavoidable. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Consumers have to rethink storage methods. B. Carbon footprint causes low electricity fees. C. Most storage companies make no profit now. D. Data centers can process massive information. D 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Research from pCloud suggests the average person stores a huge 500GB of data in their personal cloud storage, which equals 137, 237 pictures, and a sharp leap from a decade ago, where the average user had 630 photos and 24 videos stored on their phone. 根据第三段“But with services like the cloud, that instinct has seemingly disappeared. “But it’s not free, either for your wallet or the planet, ” warns Brenda. 根据第四段划线处下文“but the commercialization of digital storage has very quickly become normalised. 故选A。 根据最后一段““Now that people have much of their digital lives stored with these platforms, they expect to get their investment back,” he added. C。 D Viruses — particularly RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 — constantly evolve (进化) by increasing new mutations (突变). Some of these changes are advantageous to the virus, allowing variants to escape host immunity and spread rapidly. By predicting how a virus will evolve, researchers could, in theory, design vaccines and antiviral treatments ahead of time. In the past, researchers have conducted laboratory experiments to identify variants, but these are laborious and time-consuming. Some groups have developed experiments investigating how individual mutations affect a virus’s ability to escape detection by antibodies. These experiments can explain a large amount of viral evolution, but not all of it. The arrival of AI-based protein-structure prediction tools — such as ESM-2 and ESMFold created by Meta (formerly Facebook) — has brought new energy to the field. AI tools require vast amounts of data to be able to predict viral evolution. The mass sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has made this possible, says Jumpei Ito, a bioinformatician at the University of Tokyo. Ito’s group is focusing on the ability of variants to spread rapidly in a population, and eventually dominatc. The rescarchers used ESM-2 to create a model called CoVFit, which is trained on 13, 643SARS-CoV-2 variants and can predict the relative fitness of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Using CoVFit, the restricted model trained using variant data up to August 2022, Ito’s team found that it successfully predicted the improved fitness of certain variants after that cut-off — including XBB5, a novel variant that took hold later that year. In theory viruses have almost infinite room to evolve, says Ito. For example, the Omicron variant arrived on the scene with more than 50 mutations, looking like nothing researchers had seen before. These sudden evolutionary leaps are hard to predict. David Robertson, a virologist, and his colleagues are trying to find ways of using AI models to better understand these vast evolutionary leaps and determine their limits. “It kind of feels like dark magic,” says Robertson. The goal, he says, is to be able to work out how much room there is for a virus to evolve after its detection in people. 12. Why do viruses increase new mutations? A. To avoid being detected. B. To spread disease to hosts. C. To help design treatments. D. To form numerous variants. 13. What may contribute to AI tools’ predictive power? A. ESM-2 created by Meta. B. Laboratory experiments. C. AI models’ great accuracy. D. Data provided by COVID-19. 14. What can we know about CoVFit? A. It received training from ESM-2. B. It helped identify a novel virus. C. It used data collected from 2022. D. It made some precise predictions. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. Viruses can evolve into countless variants. B. Using AI models is limited and inadequate. C. Studying viral evolution has a long way to go. D. Understanding viral mutations is a magic trick. A 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第一段中“Viruses — particularly RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 — constantly evolve (进化) by increasing new mutations (突变). Some of these changes are advantageous to the virus, allowing variants to escape host immunity and spread rapidly. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“AI tools require vast amounts of data to be able to predict viral evolution. The mass sequencing of SARS CoV 2, the virus that causes COVID 19, has made this possible, says Jumpei Ito, a bioinformatician at the University of Tokyo. 根据第四段中“Using CoVFit, the restricted model trained using variant data up to August 2022, Ito’s team found that it successfully predicted the improved fitness of certain variants after that cut off — including XBB5, a novel variant that took hold later that year.(伊藤的团队使用CoVFit(一个使用截至2022年8月的变种数据训练的受限模型)发现,它成功预测了截止日期之后某些变种适应性的提高——包括XBB5,这是当年晚些时候出现的一种新变种)”可知,CoVFit做出了一些准确的预测。 根据最后一段中“In theory viruses have almost infinite room to evolve, says Ito.(伊藤说,理论上,病毒几乎有无限的进化空间)”和“These sudden evolutionary leaps are hard to predict. David Robertson, a virologist, and his colleagues are trying to find ways of using AI models to better understand these vast evolutionary leaps and determine their limits. As the UK prepares for cold winds and snow, it’s time to dig out the winter wardrobe. But while we’re putting on warm clothes, ___16___ British brand Joules has teamed up with cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey to dish out some top tips on coat care. Surprisingly, a study by Joules found that 20 per cent of Brits only give their coats a wash once annually. ___17___ Sarah isn’t shocked though; she knows coat cleaning can be tricky. ___18___ We should consider the material, colour, fibre content, how frequently we wear it and how it’s been stored since it was last worn. As we tend to wear layers in the winter and our coats are the outermost layer, they will be affected by the weather, getting wet in the rain, and picking up pollutants and dirt through wear over the season. ___19___ For wool coats, Sarah suggests one cleaning session per season, which can be done when you bring your coat out for winter. She explains, “Wool is described as a self-cleaning material as it contains keratin (角蛋白), which kills odour-causing bacteria. If your wool coat gets wet, make sure to air dry it thoroughly or it will end up smelling musty.” Leather coats, on the other hand, may require two cleanings each season and a wipe-down between professional cleans. Leather can easily be damaged by a build-up of dirt and pollutants, so it needs to be cleaned more regularly. ___20___ According to Sarah, for best grade leather, a simple wipe down with a cloth and some detergent (洗涤剂) should be enough. A. She suggests dividing it into several steps. B. She advises that it depend on several factors. C. what methods can we use to clean these warmers? D. how often should we be washing these winter warmers? E. The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat. F. Even more shocking, 17 per cent admit they never wash their coats at all. G. When it comes to cleaning your coat, the frequency will depend on the fabric. D 17. F 18. B 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 下文“British brand Joules has teamed up with cleaning expert Sarah Dempsey to dish out some top tips on coat care.(英国品牌Joules与清洁专家Sarah Dempsey合作,给出了一些外套护理的顶级建议)”表明后文会围绕外套护理建议展开,结合下文提到清洗频率等内容,D选项“how often should we be washing these winter warmers?(我们应该多久清洗一次这些冬季保暖衣物呢?)” 【17题详解】 上文“Surprisingly, a study by Joules found that 20 per cent of Brits only give their coats a wash once annually.(令人惊讶的是,Joules的一项研究发现,20%的英国人每年只洗一次外套)”提到部分英国人外套清洗频率低,F选项“Even more shocking, 17 per cent admit they never wash their coats at all.(更令人震惊的是,17%的人承认他们根本不洗外套)”进一步说明还有一部分人外套清洗频率更低,与上文构成递进关系,突出了外套清洗不频繁这一现象。故选F项。 【18题详解】 下文“We should consider the material, colour, fibre content, how frequently we wear it and how it’s been stored since it was last worn.(我们应该考虑材质、颜色、纤维含量、我们穿它的频率以及自上次穿过后它是如何存放的)”列举了影响外套清洗的因素,B选项“She advises that it depend on several factors.(她建议这取决于几个因素)”引出下文这些影响因素,与下文内容逻辑紧密。故选B项。 【19题详解】 下文“For wool coats, Sarah suggests one cleaning session per season, which can be done when you bring your coat out for winter.(对于羊毛外套,Sarah建议每个季节清洗一次,可以在你拿出外套准备过冬时进行)”说明了羊毛材质外套的清洗频率,是对G选项“When it comes to cleaning your coat, the frequency will depend on the fabric.(说到清洗你的外套,频率将取决于面料)”中外套清洗频率取决于面料这一观点的举例说明,上下文内容逻辑连贯。故选G项。 【20题详解】 上文“Leather can easily be damaged by a build up of dirt and pollutants, so it needs to be cleaned more regularly.(皮革很容易因污垢和污染物的积累而受损,所以需要更频繁地清洗)”在讲皮外套的清洗情况,下文“According to Sarah, for best grade leather, a simple wipe down with a cloth and some detergent (洗涤剂) should be enough.(据Sarah说,对于顶级皮革,用一块布和一些洗涤剂简单擦拭就足够了)”具体说明顶级皮革的清洗方法,E选项“The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat.(皮革的类型也会影响你清洗外套的方式)”承上启下,引出不同类型皮革清洗方式不同这一内容。 Long ago people did not have Fire, without which they ate their meat ___21___ and had to endure the cold in winter. I just found out my family will get to Hawaii!” Without a pause, she kept talking about scuba diving, sandcastles, shave ice... I said, “I’m supposed to go with Ollie and her grandmother on a snowshoeing hike in the mountains on Saturday. On our way back, we’ll visit my aunt Jen and stay overnight at her farm.” “That’s perfect!” said Mareya. “I’ll send you pictures of palm trees and ocean, and you send me pictures of snowy trails and goats!” But when I got off the phone, I had an unusual feeling in my stomach. I was happy for Mareya, but also a little envious of her exciting vacation. Having collected myself, I decided to go over to Ollie’s and found out what I needed to pack for our hiking trip. I was about to set out when Ollie came, a mixed expression worn on her face. Before I could say something, she told me that her uncle in Mexico just got an extremely good deal on a beach house and the beach-house bargain was a now-or-never thing, so a bunch of her relatives were going to go in on it together. She tried to explain it in a pitiful tone, “I am heading down there tomorrow. We’re going to have to do our snowshoeing trip another time. I’m really sorry. But you understand, right?” “Oh, sure,” I said. “Of course, yeah, no problem. Have fun!” I tried my best to push the corners of my mouth into a smile, but inside, my heart was sinking. The rest of the day, I dragged around the house like the grumpiest (暴脾气的) little grumpster in Grump Land. Finally, my mom handed me some clippers and asked me to run them over to Mrs. Nishikawa who needed these for her garden cleanup. When I got to Mrs. Nishikawa’s house, she was busy taking care of her big, overgrown garden, out of breath, complaining once rainy San Francisco turning into a dry winter. Seeing the hose (软管) lying beside, I offered to help her water the plants. To be honest, I thought helping her might take my mind off the unhappy thoughts. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Spotting the mess, Mrs. Nishikawa asked what was wrong with me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 To be honest, I thought helping her might take my mind off the unhappy thoughts. Hearing my voluntary assistance, Mrs Nishikawa beamed a relieved smile, handed me the hose and directed me how to water the plant. “Give a nice long drink to the plant which is desperate for water.” I responded with a silent nod. It felt good to be a helper, but I still couldn’t stop wishing that I were the one who would be going on vacation instead of being doomed to the same old sameness forever, without any surprise. Lost in deep thought, I held the hose motionlessly, rooted to the ground. Time passed. Before I could realize what happened, mud mixed with water spilt everywhere, the root of the plant exposing outside. Spotting the mess, Mrs Nishikawa asked what was wrong with me. The instant I felt her concern, my tears couldn’t be held back, rolling down my checks. I laid down the hose, made a sincere apology, and poured out my miserable and envious feelings. On hearing what I said, Mrs Nishikawa gently patted me on the shoulder, comforting me with patience, “It’s normal to feel like this.” She continued, “No matter if it’s plants or thoughts, we have to pay attention to what we’re watering. If we nourish negative thoughts, unhappiness will grow.” Suddenly, it dawned on me that it is feeding our mind with positive thoughts that ensures flowers of happiness in full bloom. It is a reminder of staying optimistic whenever internal imbalance arises. 词汇激活 行为类 ①回答:respond/reply ②滋养:nourish/foster ③意识到:realize/be aware of 情绪类 ①关心:concern/worry ②放心的:relieved/assured 【点睛】[高分句型1] Before I could realize what happened, mud mixed with water spilt everywhere, the root of the plant exposing outside. B On a busy morning in May at 10 am, 72-year-old Han Dengbu and his wife were getting ready to head back home on their three-wheeler, or Sanbengzi. “When we bought it, it cost about 3, 000 yuan ($414). A It’s eco-friendly. Tricycles: A Solution to Environmental Issues C Mindlessly dumping photos on the cloud and forgetting about them entirely is something many of us are guilty of——but tech experts have warned the common habit may end up costing us a fortune. D Viruses — particularly RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 — constantly evolve (进化) by increasing new mutations (突变). In theory viruses have almost infinite room to evolve says Ito. D. Data provided by COVID-19. 14 What can we know about CoVFit? D how often should we be washing these winter warmers? E. The type of leather can also affect how you clean your coat. F. Even more shocking, 17 per cent admit they never wash their coats at all. G. When it comes to cleaning your coat, the frequency will depend on the fabric. Long ago, people did not have Fire, without which they ate their meat ___21___ and had to endure the cold in winter. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5BAABC 6-10BCAAB 11-15CACBA 1 6-20CBABC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
