This weekend we expect up to 10 centimeters of snow in some parts of northern England. Those in the south and in London will see about half of that. Temperatures will be as low as 8 degrees below zero. The snow will continue into next week. On Wednesday, a storm will bring strong winds and rain. Along with the melting (融化的) snow, this could mean flood warnings for central parts of the UK. The southwestern coast will be a different story, with warm weather moving up from the Atlantic. This will mean lots of sun with high temperatures of up to 13 degrees. However, looking at the monthly forecast, even this area will be expecting snow over the Christmas holiday. It looks like the whole of the UK will enjoy a white Christmas. Remember to keep warm and check on your neighbors, especially those who are old.

Aesha Ash is a ballet dancer who began The Swan Dreams Project in 2011. It is a program designed to bring ballet to girls of color in her community. Aesha Ash is one of the few women of color to ever grace the stages of the School of American Ballet in New York City. She wants to expose her community to more positive images of women of color through the use of ballet. She wants to show the world that beauty and grace are not defined by status or race.
Aesha grew up in the inner city of Rochester, New York, where crime, gun violence and poverty were among the biggest threats to the community. For her, that’s normal. That’s just life in the neighborhood, but what she remembers most is the dance studio. She started dancing at the age of five. A teacher mentioned to her mother that she had some promise in ballet, and that it would be difficult for her, as a woman of color, to enter the ballet world. But the hardship she faced was the very thing that pushed her to pursue a career in ballet.
And there’s so much negative stereotypes (刻板印象) and misunderstanding of who they are in the media. Through the use of imagery and her career as a ballet dancer, she challenges stereotypes that exist for women of color, particularly those from inner-city communities.
“It’s important that our girls see that side of themselves because for many kids it’s hard to be what you can’t see. I hadn’t seen a black ballet dancer before I decided that was what I wanted to be. It was really important for me to be in my environment displaying that because this is where I’m from. It was always beyond ballet,” Aesha Ash stated.
24. Why did Aesha start The Swan Dreams Project?
A. To promote the images of females of color by ballet.
B. To expose her community to a world of women of color.
C. To grace the stages of the School of American Ballet.
D. To show the world that beauty and grace are defined by status.
25. Which of the following best describes the community she grew up in?
A. Comfortable. B. Ancient. C. Peaceful. D. Unsafe.
26. What can’t we know from the passage?
A. Aesha had a gift for ballet according to her teacher.
B. The hardship Aesha faced was the color of her skin.
C Acsha wanted to be a ballet dancer because of a woman dancer of color.
D. It is not easy to change the stereotypes that exist for women of color.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A teacher provides chances for girls of color. B. A woman brings ballet to the girls of color.
C. Ballet changes the life of a woman of color. D. A woman has changed the negative stereotypes.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. B

From self-driving cars to carebots(护理机器人)for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already ravages more job opportunities than it creates.
But the report states: “Losing occupations does not change what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,“ it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report’s co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although here have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
28. Why does the author mention self-driving cars and carebots in the first paragraph?
A. To support his argument. B. To provide examples.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To make comparisons.
29. What does the underlined word “ravages” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Loses B. provides C. develops D. destroys
30. What can be inferred from the report?
A. Big companies will face fewer challenges.
B. Small companies will surely defeat big companies.
C. Work efficiency and technological operation will be of vital importance for companies.
D. In the future, everyone will be equipped with great social skills and the ability to use AI.
31. In which column will the passage be found most probably?
A. Science B. Education
C. Economy D. Fashion
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. C 31. A

For some people, music is no fun at all. About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the differences between two songs.
As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. In fact, most people cannot understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify (辨别) this unusual condition.
Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from those of people who can enjoy music. The difference is complex(复杂的), and it is not connected with poor hearing. Amusics can understand other non-musical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding common speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can ’t see certain colors.
Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her music problem. Now she knows that she is not alone. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say ’No, thanks. I ’m amusic, ’” says Margaret.

第二节:读后续写 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.” That rumor (谣言) has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. “Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money.” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess (课间休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卷相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me pack the coat in Christmas paper.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
A minute later, the door opened.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
A minute later, the door opened. Out went skinny Bobby. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time I decided to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.

[高分句型2]After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done.(运用了动名词作宾语,what引导宾语从句)

C. Acsha wanted to be a ballet dancer because of a woman dancer of color.

29 What does the underlined word “ravages” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Loses B. provides C. develops D. destroys
A. Science B. Education
C. Economy D. Fashion

32. Amusics are the people who ______.
A. like music B. are born unable to enjoy music
C. don ’t like music D. have poor listening
33. Life is hard for amusics mainly because ______.
A. they know they cannot enjoy music
B. they hate parties, restaurants or shopping centers
C. they try to stay at the place full of music
D. they are not understood by others
34. What causes amusics to be different from most people according to scientists?
A. Their lack of colors. B. Their poor hearing.
C. Their brains. D. Their problems with speech.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some people ’s inability to enjoy music.
B. Some people ’ s musical ability.
C. Amusics ’ strange behaviors.
