I’m Patrick McCarthy, and you can call me Pat. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems. Go ahead and ask away!
Dear Patrick, Every time I look through my phone, I see someone having the time of their life. When I miss out on something fun or important that my friends are experiencing, I feel worried. How can I avoid this?
Sarah
Hi! Sarah,This is a big reason why so many people worry about social media’s influence on teenagers. Feeling worried and lonely as a result of looking through your phone is quite normal, even if it is unhealthy.
Quite a lot of people post their pictures or videos on social media. Most of them share the best parts of their lives. You must keep in mind that they do so to share good feelings with others. It’s hard to find people sharing their bad moments, like feeling stressed about their home life or shame after failing a test.
If seeing these videos and photos still causes bad feelings, stop connecting for a while. Do something that makes you pleased and relaxed. Try to read or spend some time with your family. You don’t need to impress anyone else.

How have cars changed? A lot! Ever since the first cars were built, carmakers have been working to make them better. There have been a lot of changes. But there is still more to be done.
Drivers want cars that can go fast. But drivers also want cars that are safe. Many people need cars that are cheap—that do not cost a lot of money.
Right now, most cars run by burning gasoline, a fuel. When cars burn up gasoline, some dirt gets into the air. People hope that new cars will burn less gasoline to help us have cleaner air.
Inventors are working on ideas that could solve these problems. We are not sure which new cars will work the best. But here are some interesting ideas!
A Cleaner, Cheaper Car?
There are already a lot of electric cars on the road. Someday, they may be great. But right now there are still some problems. Some electric cars run on gasoline part of the time. So they still dirty the air. Also, someday they might cost less, but now most electric cars cost a lot of money.
A ________ Car?
Seat belts and airbags help keep you safe now. But some inventors think that cars would be safer if they drove themselves. They say that people make mistakes but that a self-driving car would not.
At least one company is getting ready to sell cars that drive themselves. The cars use special cameras and other tools to drive. But not everyone is ready to accept that a machine would be a better driver than a human.
Someday, there may even be self-driving cars that can also fly and run on electricity. Now that could solve a lot of problems!
A Faster Car?
Some inventors think that a flying car is a great idea. They say it would help people get places faster. If driving on the road is too slow, these cars will rise up in the air.
Imagine it! Zooming up above the traffic on the ground. So far, no one has made a flying car that really works on the road. But some inventors say that they should have flying cars to show very soon.
1.Why do people hope that new cars will burn less gasoline?
2.What problems do electric cars still have?
3.Fill in the blank with a proper word.
4.What can a flying car mainly do for people?
5.What kind of car do you think will appear in the future except cars mentioned in the passage?

Spring is coming, and it’s time to enjoy West Lake Longjing tea! Usually, we think workers will pick tea leaves by hand. But now, some Longjing tea is being picked by special workers — tea-picking robots!
In a tea garden in Hangzhou, a smart tea-picking robot invented by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University is working for the first time. “We take thousands of pictures of new tea buds (芽) and input them into the robot for it to learn. The robot uses an AI model to recognize (识别) the buds it should pick,” said Professor Chen Jianneng, member of the research team. This helps the robot find the right tea buds about 90 percent of the time.
The robot’s arm pulls and then sucks (吸) up the tea buds. These buds are quickly moved into a special box. Once the robot has collected all the buds from the area it’s working at, it moves the buds from the box to a main box that holds everything it collects.
The robot was made because there are not enough people to pick tea. In Zhejiang, about 400,000 pickers are needed now. “Picking is the greatest challenge for the development of the tea industry,” said Professor Wu Chuanyu, who leads the research team.
“About five years from now, the robots will do the job of picking West Lake Longjing tea instead of people,” Wu added.

2.What are input into the robot for it to learn?
3.How does the robot recognise the buds it should pick?

April 15, 1860—A special day! The Pony Express, a fast mail delivery service, successfully completed its first journey from Saint Joseph in Missouri to Sacramento in California. This exciting journey began on April 3.
The Pony Express hired skilled horse riders to carry letters and small packages. They promised delivery from one end of the run to the other in 10 days or less!

Suona artist Liu Wenwen had another big moment at this year’s graduation from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She became China’s first Ph.D.in the suona. Her journey to that achievement was hard but well worth it.
Liu was, in fact, “destined (注定的)” to pick up the suona. Nearly everyone in her family plays this instrument, and the tradition goes back over 300 years. In that sense, what she liked as a young girl—the piano, dancing didn’t really matter.
In primary school, Liu had to get up at 4 a.m. every day to practice the suona in a garden near her home. After school, she had to practice at home, too. “It was noisy,” Liu says. “I still remember my parents always arguing with our neighbors.”
When Liu was eight, her mother, Liu Hongmei, began taking her to bigger cities like Beijing to learn from well-known musicians. They would take the late train and arrive in Beijing in the middle of the night. To save money, they would rest in the underpasses (地下通道) of Chang’an Street until it was time for her lesson the next morning.
Things got better from the second year of middle school. Liu finally had a regular teacher, the famous suona player Liu Ying. Liu Ying taught her for free until she got into the Shanghai Conservatory of Music after finishing high school. That’s when a new chapter began. She picked up new skills and gained a deeper understanding of the suona. It was not the most popular instrument among her peers (同龄人), but she was proud to play it.
Liu has performed at many big events. One of the most unforgettable was when she performed with the famous composer Tan Dun in Australia in 2017. She played the most famous suona piece, A Hundred Birds Paying Homages to the Phoenix, and wowed the Sydney Opera House with cheerful bird-like sounds.
Those sounds should be heard by more people. For that goal, Liu has experimented with many new ways to mix suona art with modern music. “I believe in being open-minded and trying new things,” she says.

(2024·江苏徐州·三模)China has the oldest living tradition of poetry in the world, more than 3,000 years old, older than Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. In a sense, you could say that like much of the Chinese political tradition from ancient times even to today, his thought was utopian (乌托邦的,理想化的).

Inner painting, a kind of traditional Chinese art, is a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Inner painting artists traditionally create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle by using special fine brushes. The bushes must be able to enter the tiny bottles. It has a long history and there are mainly four leading schools: Beijing, Hebei, Shandong, and Guangdong.
When we look at the inner painting of an object, we experience an amazing beauty. Designs on the painting often express people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most popular designs are landscapes, flowers and birds.
The production of inner painting is difficult because it requires high precision (精确) and the process of painting is totally reversed (反向的). During painting, there is no room for corrections. And a shaky hand leads to mistakes. Only those skilled and confident in their abilities can paint well. Most artists need to learn inner painting for years before creating great and fine pieces. Even if they already know how to paint, they need to practice drawing lines from the beginning.
Inner painting has its advantages because it is so special. But it also faces challenges such as reducing market needs, and fewer learners and talented artists to help it develop.
Luckily, today’s artists are trying to make inner painting more popular in our lives. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets. One of the artists invented a new type of brush and drawing can be faster now. Some young artists are using social media to help more people learn about inner painting skills.
In the future, the inner painting artists wish that people can know more about the art. Then, it will become more popular on the market. They also hope inner painting courses can be offered at school for young people to take.

An about 2-metre-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui.
There is an ancient story behind it. During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarrelled with their neighbour Wu and his family over the boundary between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved.
Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could make their neighbour give in. However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one metre or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.” His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbour was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one metre. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another metre while building their wall. It created an about two-metre-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.

(2025九年级·江苏·专题练习)A teenager with autism swims toward victory
Chen Xingrong won five medals, including a gold, at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 8th National Special Olympics Games.
Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic (自闭的), his parents were worried. In 2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath under water, which greatly increased his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions.
As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. To help the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding, he once organized about 500 people to watch an autism-themed film.
Thanks to his father’s endless efforts, Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food in the market in their neighborhood. Whether you entered the final competition or won a debate (辩论), you were probably given or received a high five before.

【答案】1.Because when cars burn up gasoline, some dirt gets into the air and burning less gasoline can help have cleaner air. 2.Some electric cars run on gasoline part of the time and still dirty the air. And most of them cost a lot of money now. 3.Safer. 4.It can help people get places faster. 5.A car that can automatically adjust its color according to the environment.

A Timely Business
April 15, 1860—A special day! The Pony Express, a fast mail delivery service, successfully completed its first journey from Saint Joseph in Missouri to Sacramento in California. This exciting journey began on April 3.
The Pony Express hired skilled horse riders to carry letters and small packages. They promised delivery from one end of the run to the other in 10 days or less!
Finally, there was a way to communicate with friends and family who live far away. You would not have to depend on slow boats or stagecoaches. About 180 riders, 400 fast horses, and 190 pony express stations made up the pony express. Its riders were mainly of small build, and many were teenagers. A day’s work was made up of about a 75-mile trip, with stops at several stations. The stations were about 10 to 15 miles apart. Riders earned about $100 to $150 a month. The Pony Express worked day and night to make sure important letters and packages arrived on time.
October 26, 1861—Sad news for the pony express. After only about 19 months, the service closed its doors because of the opening of the telegraph (电报), a device that has changed long-distance communication. The Pony Express lost a lot of money and had to stop.

Covered by snow and ice, Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest and most mysterious continent on Earth. However, this wild place still attracts people who wish to go there.
The Antarctic is a good place to research the land, ocean, air, ice shelves and biology. The Antarctic also has rich resources including coal, fresh water and seafood.
More than 30 countries have built research stations in the Antarctic. During the past 40 years, China has built five stations: Changcheng, Zhongshan, Taishan, Kunlun and Qinling.
With annual (年度的) average temperature of -25 to-30 ℃ in the Antarctic, scientists there don’t have many choices for traveling. If the weather is good, scientists will go outside to collect samples of water, rocks and other things. But when it’s too cold or windy outside, which happens quite often, they have to stay indoors. There are all kinds of laboratories at their stations.
However, they do more than just research. The scientists there have found many ways to relax. At Zhongshan Station, for example, there is a field where they can play basketball, volleyball and badminton. Zhongshan Station is not far from stations built by Russia, India and Australia. Sometimes, people from the four stations will meet and hold big parties and sports events.
