B My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. I was born missing my left hand. Indeed, my limb (手臂) difference could have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed, “You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal.” That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for it. However, that fact that I was different hit me hard my first day of high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket. I told myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, a month, and years — 25 of them to be exact. When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely, I met someone special and invited him in. The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it, love it — love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden. It was a transformational experience, and I learned to love me too. It changed how I lived my entire life and made me happier. I also discovered and joined the Lucky Fin Project, an organisation devoted to people with all types of disabilities. Hiding things, especially from loved ones, is tiring and lonely, and it prevents us from getting help and support. It’s time to change that. 24. What was the author’s childhood like? A. She had no social interactions with friends. B. She was raised with care and treated normally. C. She faced some challenges in school activities. D. She was upset about the attention to her difference. 25. What happened to the author when she was 13 years old? A. She began to ignore her disability. B. She suffered prejudice from some kids. C. She started hiding herself away from friends. D. She became sensitive due to her self-awareness. 26. How did the author change when she stopped hiding? A. She started to open up and be herself. B. She met someone who cured her disability. C. She was fed up with the company of others. D. She reduced involvement in the disability group. 27. What can we learn from this passage? A. Misfortune is a good teacher. B. Disability is not a barrier to success. C. Self-acceptance can lead to self-love. D. Nothing beats the feeling of being loved. C Women were less likely than men to support the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, or the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. They commit far fewer murders. They are less likely to favor strikes. For some scholars, these are grounds for thinking that a world run by women would be more peaceful. But European history suggests otherwise, according to political scientists Oeindrila Dube and S. P. Harish. They studied how often European rulers went to war between 1480 and 1913, and found that states ruled by queens were 27% more likely to get involved in wars than those ruled by kings. This was not all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as soft targets, tended to attack them. Frederick the Great of Prussia once declared: ”No woman should ever be allowed to govern anything.“ Shortly after becoming king, he attacked the newly crowned Archduchess of Austria, Maria Theresa, and seized Silesia province. Despite years of war, she never recovered it. But perceived weakness is not the whole story. Queens, the researchers found, were more likely to gain new territory. Catherine the Great expanded her empire by some 200,000 square miles. And married queens were more aggressive than single queens or kings, whether single or married. The authors suggest several reasons for this. First, married queens may have been able to form more military alliances(联盟),making them confident enough to pick fights. Their husbands had often served in the army before they married, and were well placed to strengthen military ties between their homelands and their wives’ states. Second, unlike most kings, queens often gave their husbands a lot of power, putting them in charge of foreign policy or the economy. During the 1740s, Maria Theresa’s husband, Francis I, reformed the Austrian economy and raised money for the armed forces while his wife ruled much of central Europe. Prince Albert was Queen Victoria’s most trusted adviser, shaping her foreign policy until his death in1861. This division of labor, the authors suggest, freed up time for queens to pursue more aggressive policies. The modern era, too, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war, or Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. The number of countries led by women has more than doubled since 2000, but there is plenty of room for improvement: the current level of 15 represents less than 10 % of the total. A world in which more women took power might be more equal. Whether it would be more peaceful is a different question. 28. The underlined “perceived weakness” in paragraph 4 means that________. A. women were less likely to support wars B. women could not recover lost territory C. women commit far fewer crimes D. women were soft targets 29. Why were married queens more likely to gain new territory? A. Because their military alliances picked fights for them. B. Because they were ambitious and aggressive by nature. C. Because their husbands were supportive in state governing. D. Because they centralized all power into their own hands. 30. What is the purpose of mentioning the two female leaders in the last paragraph? A. To imply there is room for improvement in gender equality. B. To indicate more females become leaders in modern times. C. To illustrate female leaders cannot prevent wars in modern times. D. To suggest female leaders have their share of wars in modern times. 31. According to the passage, we can safely conclude that________. A. married women are not fit to govern their states on their own B. female leaders should be responsible for all wars throughout history C. the world wouldn’t be more peaceful even if more women took power D. the division of labor allows queens to survive economic crisis D Though the spread of good reproduction of works of art can be culturally valuable, museums continue to promote the special status of original works and highlight the authenticity of its exhibits. Unfortunately, this seems to place severe limitations on the kind of experience offered to visitors. One limitation is related to the way the museum presents its exhibits. Art museums are often called “treasure houses”. We are reminded of this even before we view a collection by the presence of security guards who keep us away from the exhibits. In addition, a major collection like that of London’s National Gallery is housed in numerous rooms, where a single piece of work is likely to be worth more than all the average visitor possesses. In a society that judges the personal status of the individual so much by their material worth, it is therefore difficult not to be impressed by one’s own relative “worthlessness” in such an environment. Furthermore, consideration of the “value” of the original work in its treasure house setting impresses upon the viewer that since these works were originally produced, they have been assigned a huge value in terms of money by some person or institution more powerful than themselves. Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is discouraged from trying to extend that spontaneous, immediate, self-reliant kind of interpretation which would originally have met the work. The visitor may then be struck by the strangeness of seeing such a variety of paintings, drawings and sculptures brought together in an environment for which they were not originally created. This “displacement effect” is further heightened by the huge volume of exhibits. In the case of a major collection, there are probably more works on display than we could realistically view in weeks or even months. This is particularly distressing because time seems to be a vital factor in the appreciation of all art forms. A fundamental difference between paintings and other art forms is that there is no prescribed time over which a painting is viewed. Operas, novels and poems are read in a prescribed time sequence, whereas a picture has no clear place at which to start viewing, or at which to finish. Thus, art works themselves encourage us to view them superficially without appreciating the richness of detail and labor that is involved. Consequently, the dominant critical approach becomes that of the art historian, a specialized academic approach devoted to “discovering the meaning” of art within the cultural context of its time. This is in harmony with the museum’s function, since the approach is dedicated to seeking out and conserving “authentic” “original” readings of the exhibits. 32. The writer mentions London’s National Gallery to illustrate ______. A the undesirable cost to a nation of maintaining a huge collection of art B. the negative effect a museum can have on visitors’ opinion of themselves C. the conflict that may arise in society between financial and artistic values D. the need to put individual well-being above large - scale artistic schemes 33. The writer says that today viewers may be unwilling to criticize a work because they ______. A lack the knowledge needed B. feel their personal reaction is of no significance C. have no real concept of the work’s value D. fear it may have financial implications 34. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Original work: reduction to value of art works B. Original work: art historians’ bread and butter C. Original work: substitute for reproduction D. Original work: killer of artistic appreciation Benefits of Sports Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven beneficial to overall well-being. The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved. ___35___ Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions. ___36___ Playing sports also contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, a high five from a teammate, or a handshake after a match really boosts a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise self-worth. ___37___ So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?” Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership. ___38___ Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds responsibility and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader. Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics. ___39___ There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving! A. It’s not just your body that benefits from sports. B. Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit. C. But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss. D. If you play group sports, you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach. E. Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills. F. Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage. G. Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field. In a growing number of school districts across America, students must wear a uniform. According to the US Department of Education, wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally. Schools claim that when students come in uniform, it improves discipline and leads to academic gains. However, students protested the decision. A more important question is whether there is any evidence to show that mandatory (强制的) uniform policies can lead to improved student outcomes. A 2003 study that used a large national data set concluded that elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behavior problems. But it found that high schools had a greater frequency of misbehavior. Interestingly even when evidence is available, educators could take the opposite view. For example, a study of educators in 38 North Carolina high schools found that 61% of the school masters believed that there was a reduction in cases of misbehavior on campus when school uniforms were introduced. In reality, the data showed no change in incidents of suspensions (停学) and other problems. Similarly, research on the effectiveness of school uniforms on increasing student attendance and achievement is confusing. For example, one study concluded that school uniforms resulted in increased student achievement and increased attendance. However, another study found little impact on academics at all levels and little evidence of improvement in attendance for girls and drop in attendance for boys. So, what does lack of consistent research mean for policy? In my view, it does not mean that schools should not carry out such policies. It does mean, however, that educators must be clear about the goals that they hope to achieve. Decreased discipline problems, increased attendance and academic achievement may not be achieved just by wearing uniforms. But there may be other benefits, for instance, it could help a school promote its brand through a uniform look. School uniforms may also serve as a symbol of commitment to academic achievement. 40. Why are students required to wear school uniforms in America? 41. What are the findings of the 2003 study? 42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement then underline it and explain why. Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy. 43. What do you think of wearing school uniforms? Explain your reasons. B 25. D 26. A 27. 根据文章第一段“Indeed, my limb difference could have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed, “You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal.”(事实上,如果没有接下来发生的事情,我的肢体差异可能是一场灾难。一位护士把我放在母亲的怀里,嘱咐我说:“你带她回家。你会爱她,像对待正常人一样对待她。”)”及第二段“That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for it.(事实正是如此。我参加体育运动,在剧院表演,在学校表现优异,和朋友一起玩。虽然我确实得到了一些关于我的残疾的凝视和“礼貌”的问题,但我很幸运,因为我没有因此而被取笑)”可知,作者虽然天生残疾,但是在童年时代受到了精心照料,受到正常的对待。故选B。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket.(我13岁,这个年纪的孩子已经很有自我意识了,融入社会的需求也越来越强烈。我记得校车上的一个孩子盯着我的左臂看了太久。我突然有一种想把手藏起来的冲动,于是我把它塞进了口袋)”可知,当作者13岁的时候,由于有了自我意识,作者对于周围的目光十分敏感。故选D。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第三段“The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it, love it—love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.(我终于觉得自己准备好了袒露自己,而他愿意和我一起经历袒露的过程,这正是我所需要的。这是我人生中第一次,我允许别人真正地握住我的胳膊,看它,摸它,爱它——爱我。我认为我的肢体差异是我的独特之处,应该被展示出来,而不是被隐藏起来)”可知,当作者停止隐藏时,她开始敞开心扉,做自己。故选A。 C。 C Women were less likely than men to support the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, or the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. A. married women are not fit to govern their states on their own B. female leaders should be responsible for all wars throughout history C. the world wouldn’t be more peaceful even if more women took power D. the division of labor allows queens to survive economic crisis 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. D 31. 根据第三段第一句话“This was not all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as soft targets, tended to attack them. (这不全是女王的错:男人们把他们视为软目标,倾向于攻击他们)”以及下文可知,男人们将女人看作软柿子,倾向于攻击她们,然后举例证明男人攻击女性执政的国家,而第四段却表示这不是完整的故事,说明划线词应该指代上文男性对女性的轻视,因此画线的句子应该理解为“认为女人是软柿子”。故选D。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“The authors suggest several reasons for this. First, married queens may have been able to form more military alliances(联盟),making them confident enough to pick fights. Their husbands had often served in the army before they married, and were well placed to strengthen military ties between their homelands and their wives’ states.(作者提出了几个原因。首先,已婚皇后可能已经能够形成更多的军事联盟,使他们有足够的信心挑起战争。他们的丈夫在结婚前经常在军队服役,他们处于有利地位,可以加强祖国和妻子所在州之间的军事联系)”可知,他们的丈夫会帮助其管理国家。故选C。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句话“The modern era, too, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war, or Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. (现代也见证了战争中的女性领导人:戈尔达·梅尔和赎罪日战争,或者玛格丽特·撒切尔和福克兰群岛)”可知,这里举例是想表明当代的女性领导者也在战争中有参与。故选D。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段最后两句话“A world in which more women took power might be more equal. Whether it would be more peaceful is a different question.(一个有更多女性掌权的世界可能会更加平等。是否会更和平是另一个问题)”可知,越来越多女性执政可能世界会更平等,但是是否更和平就是另一回事了,且前面一直介绍历史上和现代女性执政者都参与战争,所以我们可以总结出就算更多女性执政,世界也不会变得更加和平。故选C。 D Though the spread of good reproduction of works of art can be culturally valuable, museums continue to promote the special status of original works and highlight the authenticity of its exhibits. A. the undesirable cost to a nation of maintaining a huge collection of art B. the negative effect a museum can have on visitors’ opinion of themselves C. the conflict that may arise in society between financial and artistic values D. the need to put individual well-being above large - scale artistic schemes 33. The writer says that today viewers may be unwilling to criticize a work because they ______. A. lack the knowledge needed B. feel their personal reaction is of no significance C. have no real concept of the work’s value D. fear it may have financial implications 34. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. Original work: reduction to value of art works B. Original work: art historians’ bread and butter C. Original work: substitute for reproduction D. Original work: killer of artistic appreciation 【答案】32. B 33. B 34. 根据第二段“a major collection like that of London’s National Gallery is housed in numerous rooms, where a single piece of work is likely to be worth more than all the average visitor possesses. In a society that judges the personal status of the individual so much by their material worth, it is therefore difficult not to be impressed by one’s own relative ‘worthlessness’ in such an environment. 根据第三段“Furthermore, consideration of the “value” of the original work in its treasure house setting impresses upon the viewer that since these works were originally produced, they have been assigned a huge value in terms of money by some person or institution more powerful than themselves. Evidently, nothing the viewer thinks about the work is going to alter that value, and so today’s viewer is discouraged from trying to extend that spontaneous, immediate, self-reliant kind of interpretation which would originally have met the work.(此外,考虑到原作在其宝库般的展示环境中的‘价值’,观众会深刻意识到,这些作品自创作以来,就被一些比他们更具权势的个人或机构赋予了极高的金钱价值。显然,观众对作品的任何看法都无法改变这一价值,因此如今的观众不愿尝试进行那种原本会对作品产生的自发、即时、独立的解读)”可知,观众认为原作的价值是由比自己更强大的人或机构赋予的,自己的想法对作品价值毫无影响,这使得观众觉得个人的见解无法改变既定的作品价值,进而不愿表达自发且独立的解读。由此可以推断,观众认为自己的个人反应毫无意义。故选B项。 【34题详解】 主旨大意题。第一段“museums continue to promote the special status of original work and highlight the authenticity of its exhibits. Unfortunately, this seems to place severe limitations on the kind of experience offered to visitors. Benefits of Sports Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. E 36. A 37. C 38. F 39. 【35题详解】 根据空后的例证“Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. (篮球运动员注重力量训练;足球运动员提高速度,而田径运动员则进行长跑训练)”可知,下文介绍各种运动对身体技能的要求。E项“Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills. (几乎每一项运动都需要体力活动和具有竞争力的技能)”符合语境,开启下文,E项中的every sport对应空后列举的几项运动。故选E。 【36题详解】 上一段讲是运动对身体的好处。根据后句“Playing sports also contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. (运动也有助于心理健康,有助于增强信心和自我价值)”可知,本段讲的是运动对心理的好处。A项“It’s not just your body that benefits from sports. (不仅仅是你的身体从运动中受益)”承上启下,符合语境。故选A。 【37题详解】 根据上文“Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise self-worth. (教练、父母和其他球员的赞美和鼓励提高了自我价值)”可知,空前说表扬和鼓励会提升自我价值感,空后说的是比赛后不要过度关注输赢。由此推知,空处陈述不要自我价值,并不体现在输赢中。C项“But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss. (但是记住,孩子的自我价值不应以胜利或失败来区分)”与空前后意思连贯,句中的self-worth是前一句中的原词复现,且victory or loss与后一句中的“Did you win?”呼应。故选C。 【38题详解】 根据前句“Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership. (参加体育运动的孩子也可能从社交方面受益,感觉自己是群体的一部分,加强责任感和领导力)”和后句“Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. (团队合作包括做一个可靠的队友和学会依靠你的队友来取得积极的结果)”可知,设空处承上启下。F项“Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage. (其中,学习如何充当团队的一员是最重要的好处)”符合语境,a part of team是关键词。故选F。 【39题详解】 根据前文“Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics. (自律是另一个社会优势。大多数有组织的运动都需要严格的训练和练习时间表。作为一名学生运动员,你需要在学习和运动之间取得平衡)”可知,通过运动的规则,学会遵守纪律也是很重要的,有助于学生取得成功。 G项“Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field. (只有遵守严格的纪律,你才能在课堂上和运动场上都取得成功)”符合语境,是对前三句内容的总结。故选G。 第三部分:书面表达(共两节,32分) 第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分) 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。 In a growing number of school districts across America, students must wear a uniform. 42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy. 43. What do you think of wearing school uniforms? Explain your reasons. (In about 40 words) 【答案】40. Because wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally. 41. Elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behaviour problems, but high schools had a greater frequency of misbehaviour. 42. Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy. According to the passage, the author doesn't mean that schools should stop the school uniform policy. He/She suggests that educators should be clear about the goals they hope to achieve with mandatory uniform policies. 43. (1) I am in favour of wearing school uniforms. I don’t want to waste time wondering what to wear. School uniforms are specially designed for students so they are comfortable. Wearing my school uniform with the school logo on it, I have a sense of pride. (2) I am against wearing school uniforms. I think we have the freedom to choose whatever we want to get dressed in. I don't like it when others choose what to wear in my place. With my favourite clothes on, I can be a true self. 根据第一段的“According to the US Department of Education, wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally.(据美国教育部表示,穿校服可以维持纪律,帮助学校识别那些非法进入学校的人。)” Because wearing a uniform can maintain discipline and help schools recognize those who come to the school illegally.。 根据第二段的“A 2003 study that used a large national data set concluded that elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behavior problems. But it found that high schools had a greater frequency of misbehavior.(2003年的一项研究使用了大量的全国性数据集,得出结论说,小学和中学穿校服的学生行为问题更少。但研究发现,高中的不良行为发生率更高。)”可知,2003年的一项研究发现,在穿校服的小学和初中,学生的行为问题较少,但在高中,学生的不良行为发生率较高。故答案为Elementary and middle schools with school uniforms had fewer student behaviour problems, but high schools had a greater frequency of misbehaviour.。 根据最后一段的“In my view, it does not mean that schools should not carry out such policies. It does mean, however, that educators must be clear about the goals that they hope to achieve.(在我看来,这并不意味着学校不应该执行这些政策。然而,这确实意味着教育工作者必须清楚他们希望实现的目标。) ”可知,作者并不是说学校应该停止校服政策。他/她建议教育工作者应该清楚他们希望通过强制统一政策实现的目标。故答案为Some studies showed wearing school uniforms helped improve students' performance, but other studies found no consistent results, so schools should stop the school uniform policy. According to the passage, the author doesn't mean that schools should stop the school uniform policy. He/She suggests that educators should be clear about the goals they hope to achieve with mandatory uniform policies.。 I am in favour of wearing school uniforms. I don’t want to waste time wondering what to wear. School uniforms are specially designed for students so they are comfortable.
