The planet, which has been observed by astronomers using high power telescopes, is about one hundred light years away from earth, which is relatively close. In space terms, the planet is forty percent bigger than earth and sits much closer to its star than earth does to our sun. The star is much smaller than our son and therefore sends out much less heat. Because the planet is closer to its star, IT takes the planet less time to move a full circle around its star. Eight point five days, to be exact. Unlike the three hundred and sixty five days IT takes earth based on its size, scientists say they expect the new planet to be rocky, which is very similar to earth. But the biggest reason why the planet is attractive to scientists is its position from its star. IT is just the right distance away for IT not to be too hot or too cold, which is a good starting point for life. IT could have all the necessary conditions for water to exist. Stay with us for the sports headlines. next. Next, on tonight's news, a planet has been discovered that scientists say may support life. There is the underground system, the oldest in the world, or the traditional double-decker bus. A boat trip along the River Thames takes visitors to the Tower of London, once a royal residence and home to the Crown Jewels. Several famous figures were imprisoned here—including one of King Henry VIII’s wives, Anne Boleyn. Museum marvels There are over 240 museums in the capital, but the two most popular are in South Kensington and cost nothing to get in to. In the Natural History Museum the key word is BIG—whether it’s a life-size model of a blue whale or a cross-section of a 1,300-year-old giant sequoia tree; even the state of Charles Darwin weighs over two metric tons. An Englishman’s home When exploring outside the capital, people usually visit one of the most spectacular, Warwick Castle. It has everything you would expect in a castle; to enter you walk across a drawbridge, but be careful. There are “murder holes” through which the occupant used to drop hot oil or boiling water on the enemy. Under the castle are dungeons where prisoners were kept. Roman remains Like many countries in Europe, the Romans invaded Britain. They settled there for 400 years, building roads, towns and protective walls. They also introduced water pipe and sewage systems. In Bath you can still see the original Roman bathing complex, complete with heating system. 21 .Who was once locked in the Tower of London? A .Anne Boleyn. B .Charles Darwin. C .King Henry VIII D .William the conqueror. 22 .What is the Natural History Museum known for? A .The value of its collections. B .The size of its collections. C .The variety of its collections. D .The quality of its collections. 23 .What were “murder holes” used for in Warwick Castle? A .Covering occupants. B .Punishing prisoners. C .Defending against attackers. D .Putting the enemy in prison. B When I was younger, I was addicted to reading. I could get through a whole book in a day, and used to beg my parents every night to let me stay up late so that I could just finish my chapter. From fairy-tales to thrillers, non-fiction to plays, I enjoyed reading any literature that I could get my hands on. However, while there are many books for younger children, once you reach your mid-teens the choices become limited. I found myself choosing between books for children that were simple and not that interesting, and adult books that I couldn’t quite understand. This lack of choice eventually led me to read less and less. When I was in secondary school, the only books I read were ones we were assigned in English class, and I was never very enthusiastic about my teacher’s choices. I thought too much discussion of symbolism and themes ruined the book. Maybe the sky being blue didn’t represent anything; maybe it was just a description! Fortunately, I realized quickly that deciding to go to university meant I had signed up for four years of reading books. I chose a French literature module (模块) in my first year. I started out, thinking I wouldn’t enjoy any of the works we were studying over the course of the year. However, I soon realized that at a university level, the discussion was more fruitful and I found I had a lot to say! And being able to discuss my thoughts with others meant I could better understand the subtle aspects of the plot yes, even the symbolism and themes. I began reading again for pleasure, starting with Malcolm X’s autobiography (自传) and never looking back. Now, during my year abroad, I spend a lot of my spare time in bookshops and reading in cafes. I’m so happy that I rediscovered my love of books. 24. What does the author intend to say in Paragraph 1? A. She used to stay up late at night. B. She read very fast as a young girl. C. She loved reading very much in her childhood. D. She once bought many different kinds of books. 25. Why did the author read less when she was a teenager? A. She was really tired of reading books. B. She was too busy with her schoolwork. C. She had no right to choose books herself. D. She found very few suitable books to read. 26. What made the author start reading for pleasure again? A. Her reading experiences at university. B. Her professor of French literature. C. A special bookstore abroad. D. A book by Malcolm X 27. What’s the text mainly about? A. The importance of discussing a book’s theme. B. The process of the author picking up reading. C. The ways to form good reading habits. D. The author’s desire to read widely. C Orcas, also known as killer whales, are some of the most social and intelligent of sea animals. They communicate with each other by different calls and whistles. Scientists have found increasing evidence that orcas have developed a complex culture: A series of behaviors animals learn from one another. Through researches, scientists discover that orcas have unique family structures and behaviors, which are passed from generation to generation. They stay in groups and the leading female orcas will teach specific behaviors to younger animals. This complex culture influences deeply what and how orcas eat, what they do for fun, and even their choice of mates. Brian Skerry, a photographer of National Geographic, traveled the globe to record orcas ’ activities. “These animals have identity, they have personality, they have traditions, they have language, and food preferences and singing competitions. And they have empathy. They care about each other.” said Brian. He found that diving with these special creatures can lead to strange and wonderful situations. And he hopes that existing features of orcas can be an opportunity for us humans to begin to see ourselves not so different than the natural world. Our own culture has helped us to accommodate to a number of evolutionary selection pressures — from hot deserts to the cold Arctic. And the same is true of orcas. By developing new behaviors, they have been able to occupy a range of ecological chain, such as penguin hunters in the South Ocean and fish eaters in the Pacific Ocean. Hal White, head of Dalhousie University, concludes, “Culture may be very important to orcas.” And he believes the new form of culture brings out all these changes. 28 .What can we infer about orcas? A .They prefer staying alone. B .They talk with others by gesture. C .They learn behaviors from others. D .They have common family structures. 29 .According to Brian, what chance do orcas provide for humans? A .Finding that orcas are strange. B .Recording that orcas have characters. C .Realizing that humans are not unique. D .Presenting that orcas care about each other. 30 .Which word can best replace the underlined word “accommodate” in the fourth paragraph? A .Object. B .Adapt. C .Stick. D .Contribute 31 .Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A .The features of fish eaters. B .The secret culture of orcas. C .The evolution of female orcas. D .The traditions of marine animals. D Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body. And downing those morning calories is worth it, even for people worried about their weight, a new study finds. The study was led by Marlene Schwartz, a psychologists (心理学家) who studies obesity (肥胖). Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34%-44% of all students said that they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17%, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. Overall (总的来说), about one in every 10 kids reported eating breakfasts both at home and at school. Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22% of the studied kids often skipped breakfast. Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less possible to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school. It also found that students who skipped breakfast most often were those most likely to be overweight. These findings may seem puzzling. Yet Schwartz’s team can think of several possible explanations. Skipping breakfast may set people to be “over-hungry” later in the day, she says. Then someone may eat more food than their body needs. What’s more, not eating regularly in the morning stops our brains and bodies from working properly. It’s very difficult for kids to stay concentrated in class without having breakfast. But why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? One explanation may be that school breakfasts are very healthy and controlled in size. Also, most of the double-breakfast eaters are boys. These kids are so active and actively growing up that they need more calories. They often eat twice as much as other people. 32 .The example underlined in the second paragraph is meant to tell us . A .having breakfast is of no use at all B .skipping breakfast is rather harmful to kids ’ health C .kids will change their eating habits as they grow older D .it is important to have breakfast regularly 33 .According to the passage, which one of the following statements is NOT true? A .The study was carried out among middle-school students. B .The study was going on for over three years. C .Skipping breakfast will possibly lead to weight gain. D .We can never eat too much in the morning. 34 .Based on the passage, what may happen to a boy who eats breakfast regularly? A .He may put on weight. B .His brain and body will work well and properly. C .He will be in perfect health. D .He will be absent-minded in class. 35 .What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph? A .Kids who are growing up more actively need more energy. B .All the kids should eat more to stay healthy. C .Eating two breakfasts will lead to weight gain. D .Schools must provide healthy breakfasts. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) Some people say “We shouldn’t waste money on space exploration when there are so many problems to deal with here on Earth.” This can be a difficult topic to find your way around, so we’ve outlined a few ideas here that you can share when supporting space exploration. Space spending pays off. Money spent on NASA positively impacts the U.S. economy. 36 And it creates business opportunities that feed back into the economy. This in turn grows the pool of public money that can be spent on solving the world’s most pressing problems. 37 Studying how we might grow food in orbit or on Mars provides new ideas for growing food in extreme conditions on Earth. Medical research conducted on the International Space Station helps us understand the human body in new ways. 38 Space is inspiring. Not every child who dreams of becoming an astronaut will get that opportunity. 39 But to be inspired to aim for something so amazing gives kids the motivation (动力) to study hard in science, engineering, or other fields. 40 When we are amazed at the beauty of Jupiter’s clouds or the mystery of Enceladus ’ oceans, we get an opportunity to appreciate the wonder of this planet that we live on. A. And inspiration isn’t just for kids. B. Spending on space supports highly skilled jobs. C. Space research directly impacts earthly problems. D. Space research isn’t as expensive as people think. E. And it helps save lives and improve quality of life. F. This is a sad truth that many of us know from experience. G. But to deal with those problems doesn’t mean we have to stop looking up. One rainy afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie” . Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too. He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said. The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’syour problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone. During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him. Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言). 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右 ;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickballgame. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
