3 Low-Impact Adventures to Try Across the UK
There are loads of ways to take in the UK’s landscape without putting a strain on the environment.
1. Stay in an eco-friendly treehouse in Stirlingshire
Located on different parts of protected woodland, the Lanrick and Leckie Treehouses come with a far smaller footprint than your average holiday accommodation. They are just four miles from the Trossachs National Park, located in central Scotland. This provides easy access to a wealth of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking and bird watching.
The Treehouses at Lanrick cost £245 a night for one person, with a minimum two-night stay. You need to pay an extra £30 for The Treehouses at Leckie.
2. Go wild camping on the Isle of Rum
You can take a ferry trip from Mallaig to Rum, and into one of Scotland’s most rugged wildernesses. It combines hiking, wildlife spotting and camping. There’s no option to explore by car or public transport here (having no roads means the only traffic is the vast numbers of red deer).
Two nights with Much Better Adventures, including one night wild camping, one night in a bunkhouse and return ferry tickets from Mallaig to Kinloch, £180 per person a night.
3. Hike through history in the Peak District
In 1932, a historic mass invasion in the Peak District led to the creation of our national park system. Today, this picturesque plateau in northern England is the perfect setting for a low-impact walking journey, where all travel is by foot. Along the way, you’ll discover the likes of the Derwent and Hope valleys.
Three nights with On Foot Holidays, including transfers and GPS tracks, £215 per person a night.
21. Which agency provides the cheapest per-day price?
A. The Treehouses at Lanrick. B. The Treehouses at Leckie.
C. Much Better Adventures. D. On Foot Holidays.
22. What do the three adventures have in common?
A. They offer free food. B. They all involve activities on foot.
C. They are all in Scotland. D. They can be explored by public transport.
23. Who is probably the target reader of this passage?
A. An eco-minded traveler. B. An animal lover.
C. A risk-hungry athlete. D. A social activist.

This year, the international potluck event at my school will likely remain among the best dinners I have ever attended. The stunning spectacle of a combined 10 tables packed with different cuisines: plate after plate, pot after pot. Dumplings, chicken tikka masala, little hamburgers, bun cha, chow mein — anything the parents could make and bring over was there ready-and-waiting, an all-you-can-eat feast that came for free.
The event had a combined purpose of benefiting both international students and local families. For one, having the chance to enjoy cuisines from their culture of origin was reassuring for students far from home. On the other hand, these cuisines also offered local students a new understanding of different cultures in the most direct way possible — delicious food. This kind of cultural exchange not only enriches our plates but also breaks down cultural barriers. It is a powerful reminder that through food, we can build bridges between different cultures and create lasting connections.
I tried Indian and Vietnamese food for the first time since tasting something new felt easier in this setting. This led me to discover chicken tikka masala, one of the most classic Indian dishes. Although the ingredients used to make it are similar to Japanese curry for some versions of the recipe, the two still have small differences in their sweetness and texture. I also came across one piece of trivia during the experience: Japanese curry was originally brought over from India by the British and was later adapted to fit local Japanese cuisine. Nevertheless, the flavor of the tikka masala was amazing and made me more inclined to try less-familiar cuisines in the future.
The amount of work needed to put into the potluck to achieve the event’s goals was immense. I talked with one of the parents who were part of the organizing effort, and she gave some details of what they had to keep in mind while preparing for the event: the slight differences of the food, what dishes to include from which cultures, how much food to prepare, how to transport the food from the families’ homes to campus while keeping it fresh, and finally how to take precautions for allergies and dietary needs.
It’s not exactly difficult to think up an event like this but what is challenging is guaranteeing that the execution will make everyone, both parents and students, feel comfortable during the event. At its core, an international potluck is essentially an event that aims to bring the community — with all its diversity — together.
24. What do we know about the international potluck event?
A. It is held in different countries each year.
B. It offers students homemade local dishes.
C. It provides people with food across cultures.
D. It aims to attract food lovers around the world.
25. What does the author mainly emphasize in Para. 2?
A. Potluck’s cultural link. B. Students’ love for food.
C. The origins of cuisines. D. Gaps between cultures.
26. What was the author’s favorite in the event this year?
A. Japanese curry. B. Indian chicken. C. Vietnamese food. D. British cuisine.
27. What’s the organizers’ attitude during the event preparation?
A. Overcautious. B. Optimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Considerate.

This summer, high school students from all over the US gathered at the Ohio State University for a pre-college summer program. During the two-week stay, students had a chance of experiencing college life by taking college-level classes.
“Through these programs, participants will discover potential career paths, gain college-level academic skills and engage with real-world challenges that can impact our world,” said Ohio State Executive Vice President Melissa Gilliam. Course offerings include fashion and retail foundations; entrepreneurship and ingenuity; engineering, technology and science for solving problems; language and society; and the science of athletic performance.
In the athletic science classes, students did experiments such as measuring how cooling vests affect endurance on treadmills (跑步机). “An interesting part was when we wore a headset and mouthpiece to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide output while walking on a treadmill,” Lauryn Brown from Hawken School in Cleveland told Ohio State News. “It was just so eye-opening, especially learning all the things that come with it.”
Fashion and retail foundations professor Cydni Robertson said students designed their own clothing and jewelry lines and marketed them to Ohio-based fashion brands. “It was our motivation to expose them to as many aspects of the fashion industry as possible, whether that be design or being a fashion historian or owning your own retail store or being a digital merchandiser, even a fashion event planner,” Robertson said. “There are so many career fields within this broad major of fashion that we want to give them a glimpse of everything.”
Brenda Ocana, who will be a senior at McNicholas High School in the fall, said that the language and society program has helped her envision a future career.
“I got to meet people that probably without this program I would have never met,” Ocana said. “It gives me an idea of where I want to go.”
28. What will these pre-college programs offer to students?
A. Academic discussions. B. Career lectures.
C. Engineering courses. D. Fashion shows.
29. Which statement will Lauryn Brown most probably agree with?
A. Treadmill walking is a most challenging sport.
B. Experiments in his program are all interesting.
C. College course offerings need to be improved.
D. Pre-college programs turn out to be rewarding.
30. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Para.4?
A. Program students. B. Students’ designs. C. Fashion brands. D. Jewelry lines.
31. What’s the best title of this text?
A. Academic Life Ahead B. A Taste of College Life
C. Funny Pre-college Time D. Bridges Between Schools

Uncertainty and fear can lead to feelings of being stuck. But there’s a solution: flow. It is a state of being immersed in a task or activity, which helps people thrive. People in flow are completely absorbed by what they’re doing, to the point in which they lose track of time or even basic needs.
So, what happens in the brain during flow? As it turns out, quite a lot — but the picture is far from straightforward.
Charles Limb, a surgeon and brain expert at the University of California, studied jazz musicians playing the piano and found that areas of the brain associated with self-monitoring shut down when they were improvising (即兴创作). Meanwhile, the parts of the brain responsible for sensory processing and movement processing increased during creative tasks. Similar patterns were observed in freestyle rappers, comedians, and cartoonists.
Put simply, brain scans showed that when individuals were deeply involved in a flow activity, their self-consciousness disappeared but their awareness of the activity was heightened.
Limb suspects that there are levels to flow states depending on the activity involved and the competence of the person. His team compared the brain activity of musicians with that of kids aged 9 to 11 who show interest in piano but are musically untrained during improvisation. They also compared the kids’ brain patterns while playing a memorized sequence versus a tune they were making up. The experimental setup was designed so that whatever note was struck, it never sounded wrong.
“The kids’ brain activity was less intense,” Limb says. What is clear is that there’s a big difference in the brain when the kids go from memorizing to improvising, or from routine exercises to engaging activities. But the science continues to be refined.
From a neurochemical perspective, dopamine (多巴胺) — which helps with learning, memory, and emotions — plays a key role. “Flow really uses the brain’s dopamine paths,” says Joydeep Bhattacharya, a psychology professor. He suggests that the dopamine paths of people who frequently achieve flow are slowly reshaped and molded over time.
32. Which function of the brain became more active during creative tasks?
A. Self-monitoring. B. Sense and movement control.
C. Storing information. D. Processing emotional response.
33. What factor most likely explains brain activity differences between kids and musicians?
A. Interest. B. Memory. C. Skill level. D. Age gap.
34. What is the focus of the study conducted by Charles Limb’s team?
A. Jazz musicians’ improvisation. B. Brain patterns in routine exercises.
C. Flow states and brain activity. D. Memorizing versus engaging tasks.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Dopamine increase directly results from flow.
B. Dopamine plays an insignificant role in memory.
C. Flow states rarely draw on the dopamine paths.
D. Flow experiences can influence dopamine paths.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Write Well
Do you edit text messages carefully before sending them? ____36____ If you do not, you may see yourself as a go-getter for whom speed outranks care: get it done decently now rather than perfectly later. A new book lays out the data in favour of sharp, simple writing.
The book “Writing For Busy Readers” is cleverly titled: all readers are busy nowadays. ____37____ What to read, what to skim and what to ignore are decisions that nearly everyone has to make dozens of times a day. The authors present well-established principles: cut unnecessary words, choose those everyone knows and keep syntax (句法) simple.
____38____
Most books on writing well publicize the advice to delete needless words. A pandemic-era message to parents first included a few sentences acknowledging the difficulties of home-schooling, then asked them to take a survey. A shorter message inviting them to take the survey got more responses. Writers must sometimes choose for being rude but effective instead of sympathetic but ignored.
Word-count is not the only thing to cut.
Keeping messages to a single idea — or as few as absolutely needed — helps ensure that they will be read remembered and acted on. A link in an email attracted 50% more clicks when it was solo than when it was sent alongside a second “bonus” link. ____39____
Syntax and word-choice matter, too.____40____ Mixing up different forms of emphasis like highlighting and italics adds up to an unpleasant whole. From Facebook posts to online-travel reviews, even brief, informal pieces of writing that follow these rules get more likes, shares and so on.
A. Take “less is more”.
B. Use as few sentences as possible.
C. Short and active sentences, with common words are best.
D. Those using long sentences were seen as less moral and trustworthy.
E. Therefore, reducing the number of possible actions has the same effect.
F. If so, you may be the kind of person who takes pride in crafting even the simplest message.
G. People are bombarded constantly with messages, from the mailbox to the text-message alert.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mr. Jones was the coach of my basketball team. He was tough. He had high expectations and conducted physically and mentally demanding practices. I thought I suited the school team but he only allowed me in the last minute or two, if we were winning by enough. Essentially, I only had the opportunity to play in practice. However, I battled, hoping the next year could be my year.
The beginning of the next year remained a huge disappointment. I sat on the bench, going in the last minute or so when my team was up big. To make things worse, the basketball season was a struggle. Winter sports were the most challenging. The weather was cold; it got dark at 4:30; it was long, and there were 4 games a week... It was exhausting. The weak would not survive, and at that time, I was weak. My body ached from the practices, and I felt out of place on the court. I begged my parents to let me quit the team.
They didn’t say no, but they gave me a condition. I could quit if I approached my coach and asked him about my role and what I could do to improve.
Approach Mr. Jones? To me, this was an absolute nightmare. I didn’t sleep that night. The entire school day, I didn’t hear a single word my teachers said because I was so focused on how and when I would approach him. I decided in math class to do it after practice that night.
Practice flew by. When you fear something, it always seems time races to the moment. I took my practice shoes off, put on my sweats, and walked across the gym to what felt like the end of my world.
He was sitting in his office, already creating a strategy report for the next game. I asked if I could talk to him, and as soon as I sat down, I started sobbing. My disappointment and self-doubt all exploded into a disastrous ball of emotion. So here I was, howling in front of the man I feared most in this cold dark world.
注意:1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my astonishment, Mr. Jones gave me a huge hug.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】
To my astonishment, Mr. Jones gave me a huge hug. He let me talk, at least through my sobs, and then he let me listen. He was honest. He told me that I wasn’t ready, that I was too weak to be on the floor when it mattered the most, and that I didn’t work hard enough in the off season. His words felt like a punch to my gut, but strangely, part of me understood what he meant. I had been coasting, not pushing myself the way I should have. Then, as if balancing his tough words, he told me I had potential and urged me to stick with it, which stirred up a mix of frustration and hope. That was the push I needed.
Despite a lack of playing time, I finished the season and worked hard that summer. I doubled down on my training — improving my stamina, sharpening my shooting, and strengthening my mental focus. I pushed myself to the limit every day, refusing to let hardship hold me back. When the new season arrived, I was ready. Mr. Jones, seeing the progress I’d made, gave me a chance in the first game.
