Step 2 Video Time: Confucius and Ren
Activity 2 Pre-viewing
1. Lead in the topic by talking about Confucius and Ren.
Confucius and Ren. The teachings of Confucius, one of the most respected teachers of ancient China, are still known and studied around the world today. Confucius identified the concept ren (kindness and love) as the most important principle in life, a principle which is still relevant in modern society.
2. Introduce some background information about Confucius.
Confucius (551-479 BCE), China’s most renowned philosopher, the founder of Confucianism, stresses Ren (benevolence, love) and Li (rites), referring to respect for the system of social hierarchy (等级制度). He attaches importance to education and was a pioneering advocate for private schools. He is famous for teaching students according to their personalities. His teachings were later recorded by his students in The Analects. Confucius believed that everyone should have equal access to education.
3. Before you watch, complete each sentence with your best guess and predict the main content of the video. (It should be about Confucian thought about Ren.)

1) The teachings of Confucius have been an important part of Chinese culture for more than 2000 years.

5) Confucius said, “Whatever you don’t like done to yourself, don’t do it to others.”
2. Circle the correct words to complete the sentences and check the answers.

Activity 4 Post-viewing
1. Work in groups. Discuss the questions.
1) In what ways do you think Confucian thought still influences education and society in China?
Confucian thought has a great influence on Chinese education, because it teaches people to show great respect for teachers and the thinkers of the past. In Chinese society, Confucian thought has kept the family and respect for parents as a focal point.
2) Do you think that your life would change if you understood and practised ren every day?
I have been trying to practise the principle of ren, but I’m not sure that my life would change that much.
3) How would the Confucian idea of fairness change society around you if everybody started practising fairness in everything?
It would result in a more egalitarian (平等主义的) society, where people treated everyone with kindness and respect regardless of status.
Step 3 Project: Making a poster to motivate others to practise virtues
Activity 5 Making a poster to motivate others to practise virtues
1. In groups, brainstorm more virtues to add to the list (Core Socialist Values). Then discuss which of these virtues are most needed in our society today.
Core Socialist Values: 1) The national values: prosperity/prɒˈsperɪtɪ/富强 democracy/dɪˈmɒkrəsɪ/民主 civility/sɪˈvɪlɪtɪ/文明 harmony /ˈhɑːmənɪ/和谐
2) The social values: freedom /ˈfriːdəm/ 自由 equality /ɪˈkwɒlɪtɪ/ 平等 justice /ˈdʒʌstɪs/公正 the rule of law 法治
3) the individual values: patriotism /ˈpeɪtrɪətɪz(ə)m/ 爱国 dedication/dedɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/ 敬业integrity/ɪnˈtegrɪtɪ/ 诚信 friendship/ˈfren(d)ʃɪp/ 友善
2. Make a poster to explain what virtue it is and to motivate people to practise it by following the tips and the sample.
Tips:
1) Collect sayings or quotations about the virtue.
2) Analyse the sayings and group them in a logical way.
3) Look for or draw a picture to illustrate the virtue.
The sample:

Thankfulness is realising and appreciating what you have.
Be thankful, because you have more than others!

3. Choose a few groups to present their posters to the class.

3. What will you do to consolidate what you have learned in this unit?
Activity 7 Summary
Summarize the main contents of this period briefly and encourage the students to practice virtues to be a better citizen.

1. Complete the poster.

3. Complete the mind map of this unit to summarize and consolidate what has been learned in this unit.
