Wildfires fueled by extreme winds have swept across the Pacific Palisades area in Los Angeles County, destroying countless structures and forcing the evacuation (撤离) of more than 30,000 people.
As of 9:30 pm ET, more than 2,900 acres have burned, fire officials said. The powerful Santa Ana winds are challenging firefighting efforts. The evacuation order includes more than 10,000 homes and thousands of businesses. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said on Tuesday afternoon during a news conference, “We are not out of danger,” warning that the most significant threat will be between 10 pm and 5am PT when the Santa Ana winds will be at their fiercest. Marrone urged people to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice overnight.
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park, who represents the area, described the situation as “terrifying”. She urged people to “be packed and ready to go” if people are told to evacuate. Already, tens of thousands of people have been ordered to leave their homes and businesses as the fires are spreading violently into neighborhoods. Park says “it may take a couple of days” to get the situation under control and “it may be some time before people can return to their homes.”
As of 9:30 pm EST Tuesday, about 25,000 homes and businesses had their power cut off as crews battle the Palisades Fire. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as the fire continued to burn through Los Angeles County and more residents have been ordered to evacuate in the fire zones north and west of Los Angeles. Newsom toured some of the neighborhoods consumed by wildfires. He applauded the efforts of crews to pre-position firefighters, aircraft and other equipment ahead of the predicted firestorm. While this news conference focused on the situation in Los Angeles County, forecasters warned of a potential worsening problem in Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, just to the south and east.
4 What is the main difficulty faced by firefighters?
A. Strong winds spreading fires. B. Limited evacuation routes.
C. Vast structural remains removal. D. Lack of public cooperation.
5. What is the primary concern expressed by Marrone and Park?
A. Evacuation efforts are being delayed. B. The danger period may extend further.
C. The fire is changing direction rapidly. D. Firefighter resources are insufficient.
6. Which word best describes Newsom when he saw crews’ preparations?
A. Discouraged. B. Appreciative. C. Dismissive. D. Unexpected.
7. What might the author continue talking about regarding the wildfires?
A. Firefighting equipment details. B. Evacuation success stories.
C. Impact on nearby counties. D. Residents’ personal experiences.
C
Here’s some news for coffee enthusiasts, particularly those who prefer their caffeine (咖啡因) fix in the morning hours.
Previous studies have established connections between moderate coffee consumption and various health benefits, including lower risks of heart attack. “Given the effects that caffeine has on our bodies, we wanted to see if the time of day when you drink coffee has any impact on heart health,” explains Dr. Lu Qi of Tulane University. Qi’s team identified two distinct patterns of coffee consumption among Americans. The first group people were morning-type drinkers who concentrated their coffee consumption between 4:00 arm and noon. The second group were all-day-type drinkers who spread their coffee intake throughout the day and into the evening hours.
The study followed these individuals and revealed that morning coffee drinkers showed a 16% lower risk of death from all causes and a 31% lower risk of death from heart disease compared to non-coffee drinkers. In contrast, people who spread their coffee consumption throughout the day showed no significant reduction in risk of death compared to non-drinkers. “This is the first study testing coffee drinking timing patterns and health outcomes,” notes Dr. Qi. “We don’t typically give advice about timing in our dietary guidance, but perhaps we should be thinking about this in the future.”
Researchers gave an in-depth explanation for the results. Afternoon or evening coffee consumption might disturb our natural circadian rhythms (昼夜节律), particularly through its effects on melatonin (褪黑素) production. Previous clinical trials have shown that heavy coffee consumption later in the day can decrease nighttime melatonin production by 30%. Since melatonin plays a crucial role in adjusting our biological clock, disturbing its production might cancel out some of coffee’s potential benefits.
While the news might encourage some afternoon coffee enthusiasts to reconsider their habits, it’s worth noting that the study observed associations rather than direct cause-and-effect relationships. Additionally, the study focused on US adults, so findings might not apply universally to other populations with different coffee-drinking cultures.
8. What is the focus of Qi’s team’s study about coffee consumption?
A. Its quantity. B. Its styles. C. Its timing. D. Its frequencies.
9. How does the author show Qi’s team’s research results?
A. By making comparisons. B. By doing experiments.
C. By quoting experts’ words. D. By giving examples.
10. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A. To propose a definition. B. To reach a conclusion.
C. To clarify a reason. D. To present an argument.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to Dr. Lu Qi’s research outcome?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
D
Scientists have long been fascinated by collective intelligence, the idea that groups can solve problems better than individuals. Now, an interesting new study reveals some unexpected findings about group problem-solving abilities across species, specifically comparing how ants and humans tackle complex spatial challenges.
Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science designed an experiment involving both groups of longhorn crazy ants (LCAs) and groups of humans in solving the same geometric (几何) puzzle at different scales. These LCAs, measuring just 3 millimeters in length, are distributed all over the world. The puzzle, known as a “piano-movers’ problem”, required moving a T-shaped load through a series of tight spaces and around corners. What makes this study particularly fascinating is that both ants and humans are among the few species known to cooperatively transport large objects in nature.
The researchers found that while larger groups of ants performed significantly better than smaller groups or individuals, the opposite was true for humans when their communication was restricted. When human groups were not allowed to speak or use gestures and had to wear masks and sunglasses, their performance actually deteriorated compared to individuals working alone.
This finding speaks to fundamental differences in how ants and humans approach collective problem-solving. Individual ants cannot grasp the global nature of the puzzle, but their collection translates into emergent cognitive (认知的) abilities; in other words, they develop new problem-solving skills simply by working together. The large ant groups maintained their direction even after encountering walls and efficiently explored their environment until finding openings. “An ant colony is actually a family. All the ants in the nest are sisters, and they have common interests. It’s a tightly organized society in which cooperation greatly outweighs competition,” explains study co-author Prof. Ofer Feinerman. “That’s why an ant colony is sometimes referred to as a super-organism, sort of a living body composed of multiple ‘cells’ that cooperate with one another.” In contrast, human groups showed no such enhancement of cognitive abilities.
12. Why are LCAs used as subjects for experiments on collective intelligence?
A. They are widespread all over the world.
B. They can transport T-shaped stuff easily.
C. They are much stronger than other ants.
D. They have the shared behavior with humans.
13. What does the underlined word “deteriorated” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Became worse. B. Remained normal.
C. Changed greatly. D. Stopped suddenly.
14. How can we assess LCAs about their solving puzzles?
A. Individual intelligence matters.
B. Hard work is the key to success.
C. There are more solutions than problems.
D. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Ant and Human Problem-Solving. B. Ant Colonies’ Team Strategies.
C. Humans’ Group Work Bottlenecks. D. Cross-Species Intelligence Secrets.

C To clarify a reason. D. To present an argument.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to Dr. Lu Qi’s research outcome?
A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

D 13. A 14. D 15. A
根据第二段中“What makes this study particularly fascinating is that both ants and humans are among the few species known to cooperatively transport large objects in nature.(这项研究特别有趣的地方在于,蚂蚁和人类都是已知的少数几种在自然界中会合作运输大型物体的物种)”可知,长角疯蚁被用作集体智慧实验的对象是因为它们和人类有共同的行为,即合作运输大型物体。
根据第三段“The researchers found that while larger groups of ants performed significantly better than smaller groups or individuals, the opposite was true for humans when their communication was restricted. When human groups were not allowed to speak or use gestures and had to wear masks and sunglasses(研究人员发现,虽然较大群体的蚂蚁比较小群体或个体的表现要好得多,但当人类的交流受到限制时,情况却恰恰相反。当人类群体不被允许说话或使用手势,并且必须戴口罩和太阳镜时)” 以及 “compared to individuals working alone(与独自工作的个体相比)” 可推知,当人类交流受限,他们的表现实际上比独自工作的个体更差,所以 deteriorated意思是“变得更差”。故选A。
根据第四段中“Individual ants cannot grasp the global nature of the puzzle, but their collection translates into emergent cognitive (认知的) abilities; in other words, they develop new problem-solving skills simply by working together. The large ant groups maintained their direction even after encountering walls and efficiently explored their environment until finding openings.(单个蚂蚁无法把握难题的全局性质,但它们的集合转化为新兴的认知能力;换句话说,它们仅仅通过合作就发展出了新的解决问题的技能。大型蚂蚁群体即使在遇到墙壁后也能保持方向,并有效地探索周围环境,直到找到出口)”可推知,对于长角疯蚁来说,整体大于部分之和,它们通过合作能展现出更强的解决问题的能力。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Now, an interesting new study reveals some unexpected findings about group problem-solving abilities across species, specifically comparing how ants and humans tackle complex spatial challenges.(现在,一项有趣的新研究揭示了一些关于不同物种群体解决问题能力的意外发现,特别是比较了蚂蚁和人类如何应对复杂的空间挑战)”可知,文章主要介绍了关于蚂蚁和人类在解决问题方面集体智慧的研究,所以A项“蚂蚁和人类解决问题”作为文章标题最合适。故选A。

“aim to do sth.” 故填to drive。
故填was launched。
故填and。
“a range of”是固定短语,意为“一系列;一些”,“a comprehensive range of”表示“一系列全面的”,所以此处应填“a”。故填a。
故填which。
故填world’s。

In a small town in Thailand, there lived a 14-year-old girl named Nisa. She was born with a physical disability that left her with a limp (跛行), but she had a heart full of love and filial piety (孝心)
Nisa’s life had been filled with challenges from the start. She was born with a physical disability. To make matters worse, Nisa’s mother passed away when she was young, leaving her and her father to depend on each other. Her father had worked tirelessly ever since, taking on multiple jobs to make ends meet and provide for Nisa. He had been her rock, always there to support and encourage her, despite the difficulties they faced. However, her father suddenly fell seriously ill. The medical expenses were like a huge mountain that the family could not afford. Now, with him lying sick in bed, Nisa felt a deep sense of responsibility to step up and help.
One day, she heard about a local marathon that offered a significant cash prize to the winners. She was filled with a mixture of hope and fear. As a disabled girl, she wondered if she could succeed. The possibilities of failing and getting hurt made her anxious. However, when she saw her sick father, she recalled the care he had given her. She said to herself, “I must try, for him I can face any odds.” Thus, with firm resolve, she readied for the challenge.
On the day of the marathon, Nisa showed up at the starting line with her crutches (拐杖). People around her were surprised, but she was determined. As the race began, she moved forward slowly but steadily. Along the way, many people cheered for her and offered her water and words of encouragement. Nisa felt the warmth and kindness from strangers. However, the rough road made it hard for her to maintain balance with her crutches. Her legs and arms quickly became tired. Sweat poured down her face. For her, every step was a struggle.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then, Nisa thought of giving up. Her legs were trembling, and her arms felt like they were on fire. The pain was unbearable, and the finish line seemed impossibly far away. She paused for a moment, gasping for breath, and looked around. The cheers of the crowd echoed in her ears, and she remembered her father’s face — his unwavering support and love. “I can’t let him down,” she whispered to herself. With renewed determination, she gripped her crutches tighter and pushed forward, one step at a time. Though her pace was slow, her spirit was unyielding. She refused to give up, no matter how hard it was.
Nisa didn’t win the first prize, but her story caught local charities’ attention. Her courage and determination inspired many, and soon, donations began pouring in to help her father’s medical expenses. A local news station featured her journey, and people from all over the town came forward to offer support. Nisa’s act of love and sacrifice touched hearts, and she became a symbol of resilience. Though she didn’t cross the finish line first, she won something far greater — the admiration and help of her community. Her father, though still weak, smiled proudly, knowing his daughter’s bravery had brought them hope.
