As autumn approaches and we prepare for a new school year, the Education Division at the National Geographic Society (NGS) is looking forward to a new year of learning, storytelling, and opportunity. In all of our work, NGS Education remains committed to the Society’s mission to inspire and protect our planet through science, storytelling, and, of course, education.
Reflecting on my career path. I initially set my sights on becoming a lawyer. However, as time went by, my interests shifted, and I was drawn towards the worlds of art and teaching. Eventually, I managed to integrate both passions, becoming an artist and a teacher. Coupled with a deep interest in learning technologies, traveling and living in different parts of the world, I would say that the little girl, who grew up in NE Washington, DC and Montgomery County, Maryland, continued to expand on her dreams.
My first paying job was working at an art store in Wheaton Plaza in Maryland. I would talk to customers, demonstrate how to use different types of art supplies and then help them to select the right supplies for their projects.
It feels like everything I have ever done in my professional life has led me to this position, the Chief Education Officer at the NGS. I have a deep love for learning and helping people connect with their highest aspirations and goals for themselves. Having the opportunity to listen to learners’ ideas, aspirations and questions and to connect them with the information they need, keeps me deeply engaged in my work. And what truly excites me about my role is co-creating solutions with learners to achieve their goals. In addition, the dedicated people in the Education Division, the way everyone approaches their work and their willingness to put explorers, educators and learners first really energize me.
My hope is that we can provide rich content, strong immersive experiences and innovative learning to design globally relevant solutions, which sparks curiosity and action from educators, learners and communities for the sake of our planet.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton have revealed how just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness (正念) practice can improve wellbeing, ease depression and anxiety and help people to be more motivated to improve their lifestyle — including healthier exercise, eating and sleeping habits.
The research recruited 1,247 adults from 91 countries and utilized a free mobile app called Medito to deliver brief daily mindfulness sessions. Participants were randomly allocated to either a month-long mindfulness routine or a control group that listened to excerpts (节选) from “Alice in Wonderland”. The mindfulness sessions included relaxation exercises, intention-setting, body scans, breath-focused attention and self-reflection. Surveys conducted before and after the 30-day training period revealed substantial improvements in the mindfulness group:
Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;
Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;
Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;
Attitudes to Health got more positive by 7.1% over control group;
Behavioural Intentions to look after health increased by 6.5% beyond control group.
These benefits were largely maintained after 30 days. In follow-up surveys one month later(Day 61), the mindfulness group showed long-term improvements in their wellbeing, notably a reduction in depression, more positive attitudes and even better sleep.
This research is among the first to link mindfulness practice to broader lifestyle changes, underscoring its potential for promoting healthier living habits like exercising regularly. Masha Remskar, the lead researcher and an expert in behavior change, emphasized that even short daily mindfulness practice can be a powerful tool for mental health improvement. Dr. Max Western from the University of Bath stressed the potential global impact of a light-touch, affordable mindfulness intervention (介入) on healthy lifestyle behaviors, noting its benefits still lasted after the course ended, indicating that it can help build sustainable habits.
The study was supported by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council and collaborated with the Medito Foundation, a non-profit promoting mindfulness globally through a free app alternative to subscription based services. Medito paved the way for the “30 Day Challenge”, but had no part in data collection, analysis or publication.
8. What can be inferred about daily mindfulness?
A. It can cure depression and anxiety. B. It may lead to sustainable benefits.
C. Its benefits are limited to stress reduction. D. It is especially effective for severe depression.
9. What does the underlined word “underscoring” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Highlighting. B. Ignoring. C. Doubting. D. Transforming.
10. What does the Medito Foundation do in the study?
A. Fund the research and collect data. B. Analyse the data and release results.
C. Make profits and monitor the process. D. Facilitate the study and spread mindfulness.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Medito App: Promoting Mindfulness Practice
B. Brief Daily Mindfulness: Big Benefits for Wellbeing
C. Mindfulness vs. Control Group: A Comparative Study
D. Recent Research in Health Psychology: Mindfulness Edition

The earliest evidence for the use of plants as drugs — possibly for medication or a pick-me-up — may have been found amid human remains in a 15,000-year-old cave burial in North Africa.
According to a study published this month in Scientific Reports, researchers discovered ephedra cones (麻黄果) in an ancient burial site at the Cave of Pigeons in northeastern Morocco. Ephedra cones contain ephedrine, a powerful stimulant that speeds up communication between the brain and body.
Study lead author Jacob Morales, an archaeobotanist, said the discovery highlights the important role of plants in Stone At lifeways. And the researchers think they were consumed during the burial — suggesting the plant was widely used by the Stone Age people who lived nearby at the time.
Today, ephedrine is known for its ability to ease breathing and is recognized as a drug that can both narrow blood vessels(血管)and reduce certain types of bleeding. But the stimulant can also increase blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels. Writings from ancient China show ephedra plants have been used in traditional cold remedies (感冒药) for thousands of years and they are still sold for that purpose in markets in parts of Africa and Asia.
Morales says the burial “appears to have held special meaning”, noting that the ancient site also contained evidence of butchered Barbary sheep and the large birds (bustards). “It is possible that ephedra was consumed alongside these special foods during a ritual feast attended by the group and that all these items were subsequently buried in the site with the dead.”
“Ephedra is a powerful plant that can act as a strong stimulant as well as having medicinal properties. But it is also potentially dangerous and its use suggests a deep understanding of its effects. It is now impossible to know exactly why prehistoric people in Morocco were consuming the plant. But no type of use should be ignored, particularly given the context of a burial ceremony,” says archaeologist Karen Hardy of the U.K.’s University of Glasgow.
12. What is paragraph 4 mainly discussing about ephedrine?
A. The danger. B. The popularity. C. The tradition. D. The usage.
13. Why are Barbary sheep and bustards mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To reveal the origin of crucial custom.
B. To indicate the significance of the funeral.
C. To showcase the lifestyles of ancient times.
D To illustrate the widespread use of ephedra.
14. What does Karen Hardy imply in the last paragraph?
A. Ephedra was primarily used for medical purposes.
B. Ancient rituals relied solely on plant-based practices.
C. Stone Age people understood the effects of the plant well.
D. The burial site provides clear evidence of medicinal uses.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Evidence of ephedra use in Stone Age.
B. The risks and benefits of using ephedrine.
C. Medicinal practices in ancient North Africa.
D. The role of ritual feasts in prehistoric cultures.

You can help yourself make wiser choices by visualizing your future self. Below are three ideas to connect with your future self and enhance present decision-making.
____16____ Researchers have shown that visualizing future events can assist individuals in delaying immediate satisfaction. Interestingly, one doesn’t need to consider the future rewards of such delay; just thinking about the future seems to work. For example, if you’re trying to decide whether to start a project now or postpone it, picture yourself in routine future settings like grocery shopping or an upcoming meeting. ____17____. The more real and vivid the future feels, the more likely you are to make a decision that your future self won’t regret.

FutureMe.org offers a unique service that allows individuals to send emails to their future selves, prompting them to picture what their future selves will be doing and how they will feel about the choices made now. ____18____ What are your hopes for your future self? What would your future self thank you for is you committed yourself to certain goals today? Psychologist Hal says that even briefly reflecting on what you’d write in such a letter can make you feel more connected to your future self.
Imagine your future self. ____19____ In one experiment, couch potatoes were asked to imagine either a hoped-for future self who engages in regular exercise and enjoys good health or a feared future self who remains inactive and suffers from health problems. Astonishingly, both visualizations motivated them to get off the couch and exercise more frequently over the next two months compared to a control group that did not imagine a future self. To boost your willpower, imagine two possible future selves: one changing and benefiting and the other unchanging and suffering. ____20____. This can inspire positive changes and help learn from past experiences.
A. Create a future memory.
B. Visualize a future success.
C. Avoid thinking about the future as it may lead to anxiety.
D. Studies show that imagining your future self can increase your present self’s willpower.
E. Moreover, let yourself vividly daydream about how you feel for your past self’s choices.

Maggie loved gardening, but her family lived in a small apartment with no outdoor space. Every day after school, she would walk past a community garden and admire vivid flowers and orderly rows of vegetables. The bright colors and fragrant smells filled her with joy and she often wondered what it would be like to have a place of her own to grow plants. Gardening felt like something magical — a way to create life and beauty with her own hands.
One afternoon, as she lingered (流连) by the garden gate, she noticed an elderly man, Mr. Lewis, watering the plants. His movements were slow and cautious as though each drop of water were a gift to the soil. Gathering her courage, Maggie approached him and asked, “Excuse me, can I help you take care of the garden?” Mr. Lewis looked surprised at first, but then a warm smile spread across his face. “Of course,” he said, handing her a small watering can. Maggie’s heart leapt with joy.
From that day on, Maggie visited the garden every afternoon. Mr. Lewis became her mentor, patiently teaching her how to plant seeds, cut bushes and remove weeds. He showed her how to care for different plants, explaining which ones needed more sunlight and which ones grew better in the shade. Maggie quickly fell in love with her new role. The once small act of watering turned into a passion and she eagerly absorbed every bit of knowledge Mr. Lewis shared. Soon, she was planting her own little section in the garden, watching with pride as tiny green sprouts (嫩芽) pushed through the soil.
One day, however, Maggie noticed that some plants were starting to wilt (枯萎). Heart sinking, she walked up to Mr. Lewis and inquired about it. Mr. Lewis let out a deep, heavy sigh and then explained, “The garden is now short on funds. Without money for water, seeds and tools, it will have to close.” At this moment, Maggie felt as if her heart were broken into a million pieces.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;
Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;
Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;
Attitudes to Health got more positive by 7.1% over control group;

D. To illustrate the widespread use of ephedra.
15 What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Evidence of ephedra use in Stone Age.
B. The risks and benefits of using ephedrine.
C. Medicinal practices in ancient North Africa.
D. The role of ritual feasts in prehistoric cultures.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

And the researchers think they were consumed during the burial — suggesting the plant was widely used by the Stone Age people who lived nearby at the time. 故选A。

Send a message to your future self.

故填was built。

Spring Festival cleaning, an essential tradition in Chinese culture, symbolizes sweeping away the old year’s misfortune and embracing good luck in the new year.
Last year, I joined my family in cleaning our home a week before the Spring Festival. We started by dusting furniture and organizing untidy shelves. Then, we engaged in washing windows, mopping floors, and even repainting the front door. Old and unused items were thrown away, making the house feel refreshed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Determined to help, she started brainstorming ways to save the garden. She decided to take action. She made posters about the garden’s difficult situation and posted them around the neighborhood. She also organized a bake sale, enlisting the help of her friends and family. The community began to notice. People stopped by to buy treats and ask about the garden. Maggie’s efforts were paying off. She collected enough money to buy new seeds and pay the water bill for a while.
Maggie’s effort also inspired the entire community to get involved. Neighbors who had never cared for the garden before began volunteering their time, bringing tools, and sharing gardening tips. With their joint effort, the once struggling community garden flourished, becoming a vibrant hub where people of all ages came together to nurture nature. Maggie’s dream of having a place to grow plants had become a reality, and she couldn’t be happier, knowing she had made a difference.
