The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot. We were strictly prohibited from using block letters on our homework, as they lack the beauty. Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive (草书). They type everything, mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great sadness among traditionalists. But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn't read a thing I had written. One friend went so far as to ask if I could use block letters next time so that she could understand what I was writing. Initially, I was angry. I had made the effort to cover an entire postcard with what I viewed as not just handwriting but calligraphy. But then I showed an English friend a postcard I'd just written, and he said that the only thing that was readily understandable was the letters “U. S. A.” The rest of it, he politely suggested, looked like “chicken scrawl”. Looking at the postcard dispassionately I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate. In fact I just now sent an old friend a postcard. But this time, I simply wrote — in big block letters: DEAR ALICE: HI. JOE. I hope she gets the message. 4. What do we know about the Palmer Penmanship Method? A. It is characterized by big flowing lines. B. It is rarely appreciated by traditionalists. C. It was not allowed in students'homework. D. It is viewed as a trend in handwriting styles. 5. What weakened the writer’s belief in cursive? A. The popularity of block letters in recent times. B. The younger generation’s disinterest in cursive. C. His friends’ failure to comprehend his postcards. D. His English friend's suggestion on postcard design. 6. Why did the writer switch to block letters for communication? A. To deliver his message clearly. B. To improve his handwriting skills. C. To win praise from his friends. D. To show his passion for calligraphy. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The wide use of cursive. B. The sad decline of cursive. C. The value of preserving cursive. D. The technique of writing in cursive. C Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos. In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay (蛀牙) and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas. Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar” (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older ones. Cultivation isn’t the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there’s also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples (which were already a sweet variety) have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that “if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference”. It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily cultivated out of it. There’s a grain — but only a grain — of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness. 8. Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals? A. The animals preferred a vegetable- based diet. B. Modern fruit did great harm to animals’ teeth. C. The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before. D. The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals. 9. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. The sugar content is breeders’ first priority. B. Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection. C. The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones. D. Molecular approaches are adopted to add the sweetness of modern fruit. 10. What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest? A. Apples of old species tasted less sweet. B. The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly. C. The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level. D. Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has disappeared. 11. What’s the best title for this passage? A Modern or Old: Which Is Better? B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality. C. Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits. D As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless. “People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways.” says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. Yet as Martin has found in her work, gender is one of the fundamental ways people form connections with objects, particularly those designed with human characteristics. In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as “Miuu.” It was found that gender increased users’ feelings of attachment to these devices and their interest in purchasing them. For example, participants said they would be less likely to buy a genderless voice assistant than versions with male or female voices. While gendering a product may be good marketing, it may also strengthen outdated or harmful ideas about power and identity. The stereotypes commonly associated with men, such as competitiveness and dominance, are more valued than those associated with women. These qualities, in turn, are mapped onto products that have been assigned a gender. Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object s name was meant to sound to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.” Martin sees a silver lining, however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) “provides an opportunity to change stereotypes.” When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype — inconsistent roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do calculations, for instance. 12. What is the purpose of making new technologies genderless? A. To reduce stereotypes. B. To meet public demand. C. To cut production costs. D. To encourage competition. 13. What were the participants probably asked to do in the study? A. Design a product. B. Respond to a survey. C. Work as assistants. D. Take a language test. 14. Why is it difficult to create genderless objects? A. They cannot be mass-produced. B. Naming them is a challenging task. C. People assume they are unreliable. D. Gender is rooted in people’s mind. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The quality of genderless products. B. The upside of gendering a product. C. The meaning of anthropomorphism. D. The stereotypes of men and women. It’s believed that everything you need to know can be found in a book. Some people argue that lines from novels and plays are dependent on what surrounds them. ____17____ I don’t buy this. It ignores the way that your brain collects, sorts and combines information. You can rant against (咆哮) a book, or even throw it out the window. Still, you won’t change the words on the page. We all ask each other a lot of questions: “How did you sleep?” “Where did you go on your holidays?” But there’s one question we should ask of one another a lot more often, and that is: “What are you reading?” It isn’t a simple question when asked with genuine curiosity. ____19____ You can also learn about the person who wrote the book by assessing their writing techniques, such as ideas, word choice, style, tone, and content. ____20____ Similarly, examining the characters in books can give us a better grasp of human emotions and actions. Understanding others helps us to empathize with them, which creates a more compassionate society. A. They demand our attention. B. But they seem out of reach for most of us. C. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge. One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing. She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔). That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve (开辟) her own path. The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.” “But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!” Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork (步法) and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates (候选人). Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made úp her mind to stick with her choice. Para l: Then Kelly began her training for the tryout, keeping it a secret from her mom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1-5 AACCA 6-10 CCBBA 11-15 CABCC 16-20 BACBB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 福建省厦门第一中学2024-2025学年 高三下英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1.What is the woman waiting for? Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate. In fact, I just now sent an old friend a postcard. A 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“The teacher was teaching us the Palmer Penmanship Method, drilling into us the importance of forming big flowing lines when we wrote g’s and s’s as well as beautiful f’s that in my mind were like fairy tale princesses wearing fancy hats while extending their right foot.”(老师正在教我们帕尔默书法法,在我们写g和s以及美丽的f时,向我们灌输形成大而流畅的线条的重要性,在我的脑海中,f就像童话故事中的公主戴着华丽的帽子,同时伸出右脚)可知,帕尔默书法它的特点是线条大而流畅。故选A项。 根据第三段中“But recently something happened that shook my faith in cursive. To my complete disbelief, not one but two of my close friends complained about the handwriting on my postcards. They were grateful for the beautiful postcards I regularly sent, but they said they honestly couldn't read a thing I had written.”(但最近发生的一件事动摇了我对草书的信心。 根据倒数第二段“Looking at the postcard dispassionately, I unwillingly admit that he has a point. All the m’s and n’s run together, and the l’s look like l’s. The a’s are indistinguishable from the q’s. So, from now on, I'm taking their advice and using block letters to communicate.”(冷静地看着明信片,我不情愿地承认他说得有道理。 故选A项。 根据文章大意以及第二段“Now it becomes apparent that young people no longer learn cursive. They type everything, mostly on their phones. Beautiful handwriting is a thing of the past. This has become a source of great sadness among traditionalists.”(现在很明显,年轻人不再学草书了。 C Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past? A. Modern or Old: Which Is Better? B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality. C. Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据文章第二段的“In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay(蛀牙) and weight gain.(据报道,2018年,澳大利亚墨尔本动物园已经停止给大多数动物提供水果,因为现在种植的水果太甜了,会导致蛀牙和体重增加。)” 根据文章第三段“Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar”(though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar(分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. (在水果种植者中,“优质”这个词现在通常被用作“高糖”的同义词(尽管硬度、颜色和大小也要考虑在内)。2010年,韩国的一组植物科学家在一篇文章中探讨了如何利用“分子方法”来提高水果的甜度,他们写道,“总的来说,由于不断的选择和育种”,现在许多水果的“含糖量”比以前要高。)”可知,现代水果的甜度采用分子方法,故选D项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段的“The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.(不同之处在于,野生苹果的含糖量变化更大,而现代超市里的苹果很少低于一定的甜度。)” 根据文章第一段内容“Is modern fruit cultivated(培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated.( 现代种植的水果比过去更甜吗?简短的回答是肯定的,但较长的回答更为复杂)”并通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了现代农业技术使得现代水果比以前更甜。可知C项“水果更甜:这不是一个误解。”为最佳标题,故选C项。 D As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless. For instance, if an object s name was meant to sound to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.” Martin sees a silver lining however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) “provides an opportunity to change stereotypes.” When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. A 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段“As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless. ‘People are stereotyping their gendered objects in very traditional ways,’ says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this.(随着新技术越来越具有人性化的特质,人们开始推动其无性别化。斯坦福大学组织行为学副教授阿什利·马丁说:‘人们正以非常传统的方式对他们的性别化对象进行刻板印象。’完全消除性别似乎是一种解决这个问题的简单方法)”可知,使新技术无性别化的目的是减少刻板印象。故选A。 根据第二段“In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as ‘Miuu’.(在她的研究中,马丁要求参与者对他们对男性、女性和无性别版本的数字语音助手和名为‘Miuu’的自动驾驶汽车的依恋程度进行评分)”可知,在这项研究中,参与者可能被要求对一份调查做出回应。 根据第四段“Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object’s name was meant to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it—they would assume Miuu was a ‘he’ or ‘she’.(马丁的研究还发现,创造一个无性别的物体是很困难的。例如,如果一个物体的名字听起来是无性别的,比如Miuu,参与者仍然会给它分配一个性别——他们会认为Miuu是‘他’或‘她’)”可推知,创造无性别对象很困难是因为性别观念根深蒂固于人们的头脑中。故选D。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Martin sees a silver lining, however: She believes that anthropomorphism ‘provides an opportunity to change stereotypes’…Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype-inconsistent roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do calculations, for instance.(然而,马丁看到了希望:她相信拟人化‘提供了一个改变刻板印象的机会’……同样,可以创造出拟人化的产品来承担与刻板印象不一致的角色——例如,一个协助护理的男性机器人,或者一个帮助计算的女性机器人。)”可知,最后一段主要讲了给产品赋予性别的好处,即可以利用拟人化来打破性别刻板印。故选B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s believed that everything you need to know can be found in a book. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Para l: Then Kelly began her training, keeping it a secret from her mom. Every day after school, Kelly dashed to the boxing gym, occupying herself with the intense training. Even when she was made fun of by boys in the gym, she bit her lip tightly and continued her training. Finally, the tryout came. Extremely nervous though, she stepped into the boxing ring, moved fast and punched hard to the surprise of other candidates. After the tryout, Kelly left the gym confidently, knowing she did her best. Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. To her delight, Kelly found her name on the list. At dinner that day, Kelly gathered her courage and said to her mom, “I'm sorry, Mom. I've made the boxing team and I'm ready to carve my own path.” At first, a flicker of disbelief and shock crossed her mom's face, but after a long, heart-to-heart talk, she gave Kelly a bear hug and whispered softly, “I'm so proud of you for being yourself. 急速去:dash to/rush to ②.嘲笑:make fun of/laugh at ③.感到骄傲:be proud of/take a pride in 情绪类 ①.
