Little things make a difference
I was at an empty Mexican beach at sunset (日落). I could see a woman in the distance (在远处). She kept bending down (弯腰), picking something up and throwing it out into the ocean. As I got closer, I noticed that the woman was picking up starfish that were left on the beach and, one at a time, she was throwing them back into the water.
I was puzzled. I walked up to the woman and said, “Good evening. I was wondering what you are doing.”
“I’m throwing these starfish back into the sea. You see, it’s low tide (潮汐) right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the beach. If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die here from lack of water.”
“I understand.” I said. “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many. And this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast (海岸). Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference?”
The woman smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as she threw it back into the sea, she replied, “Made a difference to that one!”

Two years ago, Tim’s parents died in a car accident. Even since then, his elder brother and he have had to work part-time to make a living. He has been working as a part-time waiter in a restaurant for six months, and now he’s just got his salary.
He was walking back to school and saw the notice board in the hall. There was a notice asking for donations (捐赠) for the earthquake. Amanda, a girl from a very wealthy family, was reading the same notice.
“Aren’t you going to donate?” Tim asked, “People there must be having a really hard time. All their houses have been destroyed by the earthquake. They’ve got nothing left, no place to live, nothing to eat or...”
“Sorry, I don’t have money to spend on that!” she laughed. “I have 10 new dresses to buy. I need to get a new phone. And then I’m planning to fly to Paris for the weekend.” With these words, she walked away.
Tim took the money from his pocket and walked to Mrs Tawreen’s office.
“Excuse me, madam,” he said. “I don’t have too much for a donation, just 300 yuan. Could I just donate this?”
Mrs Tawreen smiled, “Wow, 300 yuan, my dear? Well, I have to tell you that, of all the donations we’ve received from our students so far, it’s the largest amount. And yes, you may donate right now.”

I bought a “new” car for myself. It was actually a used (second-hand) car. I spent around $6000 on it. My old car was still in good condition (状态). A dealership (经销商) would take it for $1,500.
I have a co-worker (同事). He is a great worker. He is struggling (挣扎) to get by and has been looking at used cars. So I asked him how much he was looking to spend on a car. He was looking to spend $300 to $500. So I told him I’d sell my old one for $300.
My mom, who I work with, asked if I had any luck selling my car. I told her I planned (计划) on selling it to our co-worker for $300.
She started crying. She told me how glad she was that she had brought up a selfless (无私的) kid who would help someone out so much. She told me to give it to him for free and that she would pay me $1,500. I didn’t expect her to react (反应) that way at all and of course I didn’t take her money either. My dad decided to try his best to help her. He brought paints, brushes and paper to her room. He hung (悬挂) the paper on the wall, put the brush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head moved. My dad told the girl, “See, you can do anything you want to.”
Soon the girl began to paint using her own mouth. She and my dad became good friends, but my dad fell ill at that time and he had to stay at home.
Three months later, my dad went back to the children’s hospital. When he went into the hospital, the girl ran to him and hugged him tightly. She gave my dad a picture and said, “I drew this picture with my hands. Thank you for helping me.”

Some children (孩子) in Africa (非洲) don’t have school things. It’s not easy for them to get school things. Some people from other countries give them some.
They’re happy to have these school things. Bill is really happy. He gets a new pencil box. He can put his pencils in it now. Jane gets a notebook. She always wants a notebook, but her parents are poor (贫困的), so they can’t buy one for her. This is her first notebook. What’s that in Mike’s hands? Oh, it’s a storybook. Mike likes reading books very much. He really wants more (更多的) books. Little Tommy gets some pencils. He usually writes with a stone (石子), but his spelling is really great. Now he can write with a real pencil.
Do you want to help these African children? You can give your old school things to us. We need books, schoolbags, dictionaries, pencils, rulers, erasers and pencil boxes.
