Activity 5: Writing
Task 1: Plan the writing
1. Learning about the text type
The typical features of a story are the setting, characters and plot. The setting refers to the
time, the place and the social and cultural conditions connected with characters. The characters are
usually people or animals. There can be open main character or many in the story. The plot refers
to the series of events that happen in the story.
2. learning about the structure
At the beginning of your writing, use transitional words or sentences to make connections
with the first half of the story. Make sure the second half matches the first half in terms of
characters and content.
3. Learning about language
Dialogue is important in a story. It can show emotion, move the plot forward and reveal a
character’s personality. Dialogue is usually placed inside quotation marks.
Task 2: Writing
Continue the story about Marry’s family caught in a flood.
A sample:
They sat there in silence for a while, their hearts pounding with fear. Then, Dad spoke up,
“We need to act quickly. Let’s move all the furniture upstairs to create a higher platform in case
the water rises further.” They began to carry the heavy furniture upstairs, struggling but
determined. Mum found a flashlight and some candles, in case the power went out. Mary
remembered her whistle from the sports class and suggested they use it to attract attention if
needed. Dad tied a bright cloth to a long stick and stuck it out of the window, hoping it would be
seen by rescuers.
Hours passed, and the water continued to rise. But they didn’t give up hope. Finally, they
heard the sound of helicopters. They shouted and blew the whistle as loudly as they could. The
rescue team spotted them and lowered a rope ladder. They were saved! As the saying goes,
“Where there is life, there is hope.” This terrifying experience taught them the importance of
staying calm and united in the face of disasters.
Task 3: Checking your writing
Remember to check your writing after you finish and exchange drafts between you and
your partner. Pay attention to the following aspects:
□ Punctuation □ Spelling □ Grammar

Task 2: Writing
Write an article for the school newspaper calling for everyone to protect animals.
A sample:
Help protect animals!
Animals are very important to our world, and we must work together to protect them. Some of them bring us joy. Some provide us with food and clothes. Still others have led us to key advances in science and technology. Last but not least, animals help maintain the balance of our ecosystem. Unfortunately, many species are endangered because of us.
Human activities have done much harm to animals. Some human activities, such as hunting and fishing, directly cause populations of many animals to fall. Other human activities have an indirect impact on animals. For example, the destruction of the Amazon rainforest has led to the loss of animal habitats.
We must try to do whatever we can to protect animals. By reducing our use of wood and paper, we can save not only trees, but animals living in the forests. Likewise, we should try to reduce the amount of beef that we eat, because many trees in the Amazon are cut down to make room for cattle farming. But above all, we should spread awareness about the importance of animals and their need for protection.

Activity 4: Discussion
In pairs, discuss what might happen next in the story.
1. What if Mary and her parents try to leave their house? What if they decide to stay at
home?
2: What safety tips from Part A can be used to help Mary and her parents protect
themselves?
3: Will any new characters appear? Who are they and what will they do?
As the saying goes,
“Where there is life, there is hope.” This terrifying experience taught them the importance of
staying calm and united in the face of disasters.

your partner. Pay attention to the following aspects:
