“Make-A-Wish” is one of the world’s most well-known charities (慈善机构). It makes wishes come true for children with serious illness. It gives them hope and joy and helps them forget about their health problems and have fun.
It started in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer. Tommy Austin and Ron Cox, two police officers, made his wish come true. They gave Christopher a tour of the city in a police helicopter (直升飞机) and made a real police uniform for him.
There are four kinds of wishes children usually have:
I wish to go. Children usually want to travel or go to a concert, a game or a park.

I wish to be. Some children wish to become actors, singers or train drivers.
I wish to have. They often want to have a computer, a game, a bike or many other things.

Many people get enough sleep and food, but still feel tired and hungry during the day. Perhaps this is because they sleep or eat at the wrong time.
There is no perfect (完美的) time to sleep because everyone’s body clock is different, but sleep expert (专家) Dr Michael Howell says the best sleep is six hours at night and two hours in the afternoon. The best time to have your afternoon sleep is six hours after you wake up in the morning, but this is not possible (可能的) for most people because they are at work.
It is also useful to think about what time you eat. Some people think it is important to eat breakfast two hours after you wake up and have dinner three hours before you go to sleep. If you have dinner too late in the day, you may feel full and sick when you lie down.
Although there are many different suggestions on health from many experts, I think the most important thing to remember is to listen to your own body clock, and then you can live a healthier life.

Elephants shouldn’t be in captivity(圈养)
Elephants are really fantastic animals. We now have good reasons to believe that they are some of the most clever and social animals around. This makes us think about how we should take care of them.
In the past ten years, there have been stories about elephants with surprising skills. Scientists (科学家) have found that elephants are even cleverer than we thought before.
Elephants in the wild show their intelligence (智慧) in many ways. For example, they remember where water holes (坑) are and go back there to drink later. They can use their trunks to get food and water in hard-to-reach places. They might even know who they are.
New studies tell us that wild elephants have many other special social skills.
They talk to each other in different ways and make decisions together. They work together to solve problems. Also, elephants are very helpful to each other. Mothers and children stay together in families. They take care of each other’s babies and protect the young ones. What’s more, elephants have strong friendships. They are sad when one of them dies. When one elephant is sad, others try to make it happy. When they succeed (成功), they celebrate together.
Some scientists think elephants shouldn’t be in captivity. Zoos can’t give them the right living environment like the wild. Their great intelligence means they need more space. We should think about setting them free. Keeping such clever animals in captivity is wrong. In the future, we might look back and be surprised that we ever did this.

I wish to meet. Children sometimes want to meet their favourite actors, singers or players.
I wish to be. Some children wish to become actors, singers or train drivers.
I wish to have. They often want to have a computer, a game, a bike or many other things.
Let’s hope more wishes will come true in the future. People who work in the charity always try for the best. Almost 25,000 volunteers (志愿者) help, work or give money. Will you be one of them?

8. Why do people still feel tired with enough sleep?
A. Because they go to bed late. B. Because they sleep at the wrong time.
C. Because they get up too early. D. Because they eat too much before sleep.
9. According to Dr Michael, when is the best time for sleep in the day?
A. Two hours after exercise. B. Six hours after lunch.
C. Six hours after getting up. D. Two hours after breakfast.
10. What can we know from the passage?
A. We should have breakfast as soon as we get up.
B. Many people cannot have afternoon sleep because of work.
C. If we get enough food and sleep, we will not feel hungry or tired.
D. Our body clocks are the same, so we can find the perfect time to sleep.
11. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. Perfect time to eat and sleep B. The most important thing
C. How to have a healthy diet D. Change your body clock
D
Elephants shouldn’t be in captivity(圈养)
Elephants are really fantastic animals. We now have good reasons to believe that they are some of the most clever and social animals around. This makes us think about how we should take care of them.
In the past ten years, there have been stories about elephants with surprising skills. Scientists (科学家) have found that elephants are even cleverer than we thought before.
Elephants in the wild show their intelligence (智慧) in many ways. For example they remember where water holes (坑) are and go back there to drink later.
12. What have scientists found in the past ten years?
A. Elephants are more social than before. B. Elephants have the same skills as humans.
C. Elephants are cleverer than we thought before. D. Elephants have the intelligence to make stories.
13. According to Paragraph 3, how do elephants show their intelligence?
A. They can remember places with water. B. They can use their trunks to know weather.
C. They build their homes in small water holes. D. They talk to other animals to know each other.
14. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Zoos are the best homes for elephants. B. Elephants are helpful and friendly animals.
C. Elephant babies live away from their mothers. D. People have strong friendships with elephants.
15. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To call on people to set elephants free. B. To talk about the food problems of animals.
C. To tell us elephants’ influences on nature. D. To give the reasons of studying elephants.
