Paragraph 1:
This time, his throw over the waterfall was perfect. “Dont worry,
they will find us,”David turned to Sara and Hunter,in a tone of great
comfort. Then they went back to the beach where they had camped for the
last three days. Soon, darkness ruled the place. Exhausted and worried,
they fell asleep very quickly. In the late night,David felt like hearing the
engine of a helicopter in his sleep. He suddenly woke up but saw nothing
except endless darkness. He then fell into sleep again.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, they heard a helicopter hovering (盘旋)above
them. Its true,a rescue team had been searching for them the whole
night and just found out where they were. Finally, they were rescued.
Flooded with tears of joy,the three hugged each other very tightly. It
turned out some hikers noticed the unusual water bottle in the water.
When they had read the note inside, they called the police immediately.
David was planning on having a big barbecue to meet the hikers—and
thanked them.“I imagine its going to be one of the greatest moments of
my life,”he said.

Text 10
Tea is the most classical of English drinks. It was not until the mid
17th century that drinks first appeared in England. The use of tea spread
slowly from its Asian homeland and reached Europe around 1560. Dutch
and Portuguese traders imported tea to Europe with regular shipments
by 1610.
Thomas Garway who owned one of the first London coffee houses
sold tea both liquid and dry to the public as early as 1657.
Tea gained popularity quickly in coffee houses. By 1700,over 500
houses sold it and 50 years later, this drink had become the favorite one
of Britains lower classes also.
In the early 1800s Anna,7th Duchess of Bedford, launched the
idea of having tea in the late afternoon. Afternoon tea is said to have
originated with one person.
Today you find tea shops all over Britain.

In the second half, the filmmakers look at
what we can do to deal with the problem.(在影片的后半段,电影
制作人将着眼于如何解决这个问题。)”可知这部电影不仅仅是
展示了消极的方面,还展示了如何解决问题。E项“但这部电影
不仅呈现了消极的一面”符合语境,故选E项。
40. B 根据前文“We make a shocking amount of plastic. Over 300
million tons of plastic are produced every year, and at least 8 million
of those are dumped into the oceans. The results are disastrous, but
it isnt too late to change.(我们制造的塑料数量惊人。

Dear Chris,
Im writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last
Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most.
Inspired by the fantastic scenery,I decided to create a watercolor
painting of the small bridge over the parks pond, surrounded by
blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded
by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a muchneeded
break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense
of peace as I painted.
In a word,it was not just an art class;it was a moment of
connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua

Can you imagine a cloud floating in the middle of your room?Do you want
to know what it feels like to fly like a bird?Find your answers in Time
Magazines 25 “Best Inventions”. Here,we have picked out the most interesting
4 to share with you.
Talking Gloves
Ever felt confused by the sign language used by disabled people? Here is
the “helping hand”you need. Four Ukrainian students have created a pair of
gloves that helps people with hearing and speech problems communicate with
others. The gloves are equipped with sensors that recognize sign language and
translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to
spoken words.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into the frame of a pair of glasses.
With its 1. 3centimeter display, the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and
make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS
mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the
Internet just by looking up,down, left and right.
Indoor Clouds
Its not virtual. Thats a real world. Dutch artist Smilde managed to create a
small but perfect white cloud in the middle of a room using a fog machine. But it
required careful planning—the temperature, humidity(湿度)and lighting all
had to be just right. Once everything was ready, the cloud formed in the air with
the machine. But it only lasted for a short while.
Wingsuits
The suit fulfills your dreams of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying,
but gliding(滑翔)through the air. It increases the surface area of the human
body, which makes it easier for people to float in the air. Fliers wearing
wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 s
econds.

Some caterpillars warning signals (信号)may have evolved (进化)from
walking. A team, writing in the journal Nature Communications, reported that
the hairlike structures the living things use to make sounds evolved from legs.
The team studied caterpillars which use these structures to communicate
their ownership of leaves. This means the caterpillars are able to“tell”strangers
to go away without risking injury in fighting. “These are really interesting
caterpillars,”said Dr. Jayne Yack from Carleton University in Ottawa,Canada,
who led the research.“They make signals using hairlike structures which are
on their back ends.”
The caterpillars drag these structures across the leaf to make scraping(刺耳
的)sounds when strangers enter the area of their leaves.“When they make this
signal,the strangers leave,”explained Dr. Yack.“Its like saying‘Im here,get
out of here—I already own this leaf.”
The scientists looked at other species (物种)within the same group of
caterpillars and created their “family tree”. They used chemical markers (标记
物)to work out the relationship between the animals, showing which in the
group were the more ancient species and which species evolved more recently.
“Those more ancient species actually dont have these soundproducing
structures. They have legs that they use to walk towards strangers,”said Dr.
Yack. These more ancient species, she explained, walk towards strangers and
try to fight against them.“They can kill each other in the fighting,”Dr. Yack
added. She said that the evolution of the scraping show had allowed the
caterpillars to solve their fighting without injury. “So our idea is that these
signals actually avoid harm to both sides—they solve fighting in a more
‘friendly way.”
The study also provides a map of an evolutionary process that many other
biologists are researching.
24. What can we learn about caterpillars warning structures from the text? D
A. They have the same use as hair.
B. They are found in caterpillars heads.
C. They are used to fight against strangers.
D. They may have evolved from caterpillars legs.
25. According to the text,Dr. Yacks team did NOT B .
A. draw a family tree of caterpillars
B. create a map to show how caterpillars evolve
C. study species within the same group of caterpillars
D. make clear the relationship between different species of caterpillars
26. What does the underlined word “They”in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A
A. The ancient species.
B. The chemical markers.
C. The soundproducing structures.
D. The more recently evolved species.
27. What is the main idea of the text? D
A. How caterpillars evolved.
B. How caterpillars warn strangers.
C. Communication between caterpillars.
D. Caterpillars warning signals evolved from walking.

(2024·新高考Ⅰ卷)
We all know fresh is best when it comes to food. However, most produce at
the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before
reaching the table. While farmers markets are a solid choice to reduce the
journey,Babylon MicroFarm (BMF)shortens it even more.
BMF is an indoor garden system. It can be set up for a family.
Additionally,it could serve a larger audience such as a hospital, restaurant or
school. The innovative design requires little effort to achieve a reliable weekly
supply of fresh greens.
Specifically, its a farm that relies on new technology. By connecting
through the Cloud,BMF is remotely monitored. Also, there is a convenient app
that provides growing data in real time. Because the system is automated,it
significantly reduces the amount of water needed to grow plants. Rather than
watering rows of soil, the system provides just the right amount to each plant.
After harvest, users simply replace the plants with a new preseeded pod (容
器)to get the next growth cycle started.
Moreover, having a system in the same building where its eaten means
zero emissions (排放)from transporting plants from soil to salad. In addition,
theres no need for pesticides and other chemicals that pollute traditional farms
and the surrounding environment.
BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives. About half of
them walk or bike to work. Inside the office, they encourage recycling and waste
reduction by limiting garbage cans and avoiding singleuse plastic. “We are
passionate about reducing waste, carbon and chemicals in our environment,”
said a BMF employee.
28. What can be learned about BMF from paragraph 1?
A. It guarantees the variety of food.
B. It requires daytoday care.
C. It cuts the farmtotable distance.
D. It relies on farmers markets.
29. What information does the convenient app offer?
A. Realtime weather changes. B. Current condition of the plants.
C. Chemical pollutants in the soil. D. Availability of preseeded pods.
30. What can be concluded about BMF employees?
A. They have a great passion for sports.
B. They are devoted to community service.
C. They are fond of sharing daily experiences.
D. They have a strong environmental awareness.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. BMFs major strengths. B. BMFs general management.
C. BMFs global influence. D. BMFs technical standards.

There is more that comes with older age than greying hair and wrinkled
skin. When humans reach their later years, they favour more established friends
and their social circle is reduced.
Now,for what appears to be the first time, scientists have seen the same
behaviour in another species. Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (猩
猩)reveal that older males choose to hang out with
their longterm friends at
▲
273 ▲
▲
274 ▲
the expense of other relationships.
The researchers studied 78,000 hours of observations made between 1996
and 2016 that followed the social interactions of 21 male chimpanzees between
the ages of 15 and 58 years old. They classified the chimps relationships
depending on the amount of time they sat with others and groomed (梳毛)
them. They then rated the various pairings as mutual (相互的)friendships,
where both chimps seemed to enjoy the relationship;onesided friendships,
where one chimp was more keen to be friends than the other;and non
friendships, where neither chimp showed interest in the other.
When the scientists looked at the patterns of friendships, they found that
the older chimps had more mutual friendships and fewer onesided friendships
than younger chimps. Another feature seen in older humans was also spotted in
the chimps. As the males got older, their levels of aggression(挑衅)tailed off,
meaning they started fewer fights and tended to intimidate others in their group
less often.
The observations have left the researchers puzzled. According to an idea in
psychology known as socioemotional selectivity theory,or SST,older humans
prefer more positive relationships because they are aware time is running out.
But many animal experts argue that chimpanzees lack the human sense of
mortality (死亡),suggesting something else is driving the behaviour.
Robin Dunbar,a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of
Oxford, said in humans, the decline in social circles with age is due to
declining social motivation to get out and meet people combined by lack of
opportunity. In chimpanzees,as older males compete less for mates, they may
focus on close,reciprocal (互惠的)relationships with trusted partners,she
said.
32. What do older male chimpanzees favour? A
A. Old friendships. B. New bonds.
C. Greying hair. D. Wrinkled skin.
33. How did the researchers draw their conclusion about chimpanzees? D
A. By turning to other scientists.
B. By introducing a new concept.
C. By forming relationships with them.
D. By analyzing two decades observations.
34. What does the underlined word “intimidate”in Paragraph 4 mean? A
A. Threaten. B. Motivate.
C. Defend. D. Accompany.
35. According to Robin Dunbar, what accounts for declining social circles in
chimpanzees? B
A. Awareness of time.
B. Less competition for mates.
C. Low motivation for socialization.
D. Lack of the human sense of mortality.

A Plastic Ocean is a film to make you think. Think, and then act. We need
to take action on our dependence on plastic. Weve been producing plastic in
huge quantities. Drinking bottles, shopping bags and even clothes are made with
plastic. 36. D What happens to all the rest? This is the question the film A
Plastic Ocean answers.
The film begins as a journey to film the largest animal on the planet, the
blue whale. But during the journey the filmmakers make the shocking discovery
of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the Indian Ocean. 37. A In total,
they visited 20 locations around the world during the four years to make the
film.
In the film there are beautiful shots of the seas and marine life. 38. G
We see how marine species are being killed by all the plastic we are dumping in
the ocean. The message about our use of plastic is painfully obvious.
39. E In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to
deal with the problem.
They present shortterm and longterm solutions. These include avoiding
plastic containers and recycle as much as you can. The filmmakers also stress
the need for governments to work more on recycling programmes.
We make a shocking amount of plastic. Over 300 million tons of plastic are
produced every year, and at least 8 million of those are dumped into the
oceans. The results are disastrous, but it isnt too late to change. 40. B .
A. This causes them to travel around the world to look at other affected areas.
B. Once youve seen the film, youll realize it is time to do our part.
C. It has raised public concern all over the world.
D. We live in a world full of plastic, and only a small amount is recycled.
E. But the film doesnt only present the negative side.
F. In conclusion,we only have one earth to live on.
G. These are contrasted with dumps of plastic rubbish.

On a Saturday afternoon in Wichita Falls,Texas, three kids talked and
laughed happily as they took turns riding a scooter (滑板车)on their quiet
street. 11yearold TJ Smith had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbors
Kim,age 7,claimed her turn,and Julie,9,looked on. Ten minutes later,Kim
sat down on the scooter to catch her breath. That was when a bearded man with
a head of messy hair appeared. The kids didnt see where he came from, but
they saw exactly what happened next:Without saying a word, the man picked
Kim up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.
The guy held Kim gently like a baby and just walked down the street. In
fact, the calm way the man behaved led TJ to believe that he must be a relative
of Kims. But something wasnt right.“I could see Kims face,”TJ said.“She
was scared.”
As the man walked on,Kims fear transformed into weeps, and then she
cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the mans
control.“What are you doing?”Julie shouted. But the man, undisturbed, just
walked the length of the block until he reached an alley (小巷) and
disappeared.
TJ was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The
only thing he wanted to do was to get Kim back. But what was a 4foottall kid
going to do to stop a grown man?“I want to help, but I cant do it myself,”he
thought to himself. “Tell Kims parents,Julie!”He shouted as he started
running towards the alley.
Kims parents were relaxing on the sofa in their living room when their front
door burst open.
Paragraph 1:
“A bad guy just picked Kim up and took her away!”
yelled Julie.
Paragraph 2:
At that very moment Kims parents arrived.
