Kato Lomb was born at an exciting time. It was 1909 in Budapest, and the world that she grew up in was about to see great changes.
After getting her degree(学位)in chemistry, she saw little hope of getting a job in the scientific fields. So she decided to teach English. She just had to learn it first. In her language learning, Kato started reading cheap but exciting novels(小说), carrying a dictionary with her all the time.
Her way of language learning made sense—if the story is exciting enough, it can keep you going past what you don’t understand. In the end, you can pick up what you need from the context(上下文). The reading took her further than she could have imagined.
After the end of the Second World War, she began a long and successful career(事业)of Interpretation(口译)and translation. In fact, she was one of the first professional simultaneous interpreters(专业同声传译人员)in the world. Simultaneous interpretation is a job much more difficult than translation as all the work happens in real time. Not stopping at English, she learned French, Russian, Polish, Chinese, Japanese and quite a few other languages that she used to work as a translator.
Kato believed that interest was the most important part of language learning. Grammar could always come later if you were excited about learning and understanding new words in the language. Kamayan is a word in Tagalog, a language widely spoken in the Philippines (菲律宾). The word means “by hand” and it’s the traditional way of eating in the Philippines: many people eating together, without dishes, forks or spoons. Though the practice became less common under colonial (殖民的) rule, kamayan meals are making a comeback, especially in places with a large population from the Philippines.
One thing special about a kamayan meal is that the table is usually covered in smooth banana leaves, used as dishes. On the leaves there is Filipino food, including fish, different kinds of vegetables, eggs, chicken and more. And, important to any Filipino meal, there must be plenty of rice and sauces (酱汁), such as datu puti and Mang Tomás. Using their hands as spoons, diners quickly pick up rice and other food, and then put them into their mouths.
Kamayan meals can be found around the world, both in areas where there’re lots of people from the Philippines and, more recently, at restaurants. In some of these places, a kamayan meal might also be called a “boodle fight”, which goes back to a military (军事的) practice during the United States’ colonization of the Philippines. During a boodle fight, different levels of officers (军官) would take part in eating competitions (比赛) around a table.
Anyone who worried about their ability to eat very quickly needn’t worry: today, both kamayan meals and boodle fights are more about fun than about competition.
26. What do we know about kamayan meals under the colonial rule?
A. People ate them less often. B. People changed them a lot.
C. They were found around the world. D. They brought visitors to the Philippines.

A. chicken B. fish C. vegetables D. sauce

六、阅读表达(共5小题,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,回答短文后面的各个小题。
On the subway, by the bus stop...we often see people watching micro-dramas on apps like Kuaishou and Douyin. These dramas have been on the rise over the past few years. In 2023, micro-dramas made more than 35 billion yuan, the same as 70 percent of the money made by China’s film industry, reported China Daily on Sep 27.
Chinese micro-dramas are also going strong around the world. Sensor Tower, a US company, said that over 40 apps for watching the dramas have entered the global (全球) market. By early 2024, these apps already had around 55 million downloads. One of them, ReelShort, has been downloaded more times than Netflix on the Apple Store in the US, reported Reuters.
International viewers (观众) find these micro-dramas exciting to watch, reported Xinhua. The stories are usually fast-paced (快节奏的) and have many surprising twists (转折). This keeps people’s attention and makes them fun, Liu Jinlong, head of the app Short TV, told Xinhua.
The short length of the dramas adds to their popularity. Each episode (集) may last from only tens of seconds to two minutes. People can finish a micro-drama in short periods of time, such as on their way to work.
Going forward, micro-dramas could open new doors for China’s cultural exports (输出), noted MIT Technology Review. However, one challenge to be solved is that many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones like time travel, Li Jiang, head of Dianzhong Tech, a company in Beijing, told China Daily.

【51题详解】
根据“In 2023, micro-dramas made more than 35 billion yuan, the same as 70 percent of the money made by China’s film industry, reported China Daily on Sep 27.”可知,2023年,微剧票房超过350亿元,相当于中国电影行业总收入的70%。也就是中国电影行业的总收入超过350÷70%=500亿元。故填China’s film industry made about 50 billion yuan in 2023.
【52题详解】
根据“International viewers (观众) find these micro-dramas exciting to watch, reported Xinhua. The stories are usually fast-paced (快节奏的) and have many surprising twists (转折).”可知,国际观众认为这些微剧很刺激是因为这些故事通常是快节奏的,并且有许多令人惊讶的转折,这既能吸引人们的注意力,又能让节目变得有趣。故填Because the stories are usually fast-paced and have many surprising twists. This keeps people’s attention and makes them fun.
【53题详解】
根据“However, one challenge to be solved is that many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones”可知,微剧需要解决的一个挑战是,许多微剧都有相似的主题,应该涵盖更多的主题。故填Many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics.

No matter what language she was learning, she was always interested in it and believed she could complete(完成)the task.

A. A Moving Life Story B. A Hard-working Teacher

27. What is special about a kamayan meal?
A. Eating uncooked vegetables. B. Using banana leaves as dishes.
C. Feeding each other with hands. D. Putting food directly on a table.
28. Mang Tomás is a kind of ________.
A. chicken B. fish C. vegetables D. sauce
29. What was a “boodle fight” like at the very beginning?
A. It was an eating race. B. It was a fight at the table.
C. It included mainly the locals. D. It was for officers of the same level.
30. What is the text mainly about?
A. Language. B. Science. C. Tradition. D. Nature.
