H.C. ANDERSEN ART COMPETITION FOR PUPILS
The competition is based on the works of the famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, whose globally well-known fairy tales deal with themes that transcend (超越) time as well as age and nationality. Over the years, fairy tales such as “The Snow Queen”, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and many others have inspired a host of different artistic interpretations — ranging from creative rewritings, theatre performances, music and films, including the ever-popular animated movies by the Walt Disney Company, to games, paintings and sculptures.
The goal of the competition is to familiarise Latvian, Estonian and Belarusian pupils with H.C. Andersen’s literary works, and develop children’s and young people’s imagination, creativity and innovative thinking by creating visual interpretations of fairy tales. Children aged 7-15 are invited to create their very own visual interpretation of one of the writer’s many fairy tales. The creative work can be a drawing, an animation video, a painting or even a papercut — one of the writer’s favourite pastimes — only the imagination sets the limits!
Application period:
Latvia — April 14 till May 14
Estonia — May 4 till May 31
Belarus — May 11 till June 9
The competition entries will be evaluated by a committee selected by the Danish Cultural Institute who will find two winners in each of the two age categories (7-11 and 12-15 years old) for each country.
The winner in each category will receive a new Danish bicycle — Kildemoes!
Participants can submit their creative work electronically by filling in the application form and uploading their competition entry.
1. What does the competition aim to do?
A. Enrich children’s pastime activities.
B. Honour a well-known Danish artist.
C. Inspire pupils to write literary works.
D. Promote pupils’ creativity in visual arts.
2. When can applicants from Estonia submit their entries?
A. April 14. B. May 1. C. May 10. D. June 9.
3. How many winners will the competition have in total?
A. Two. B. Four. C. Six. D. Twelve.
由文章第二段中“The goal of the competition is to familiarise Latvian, Estonian and Belarusian pupils with H.C. Andersen’s literary works, and develop children’s and young people’s imagination, creativity and innovative thinking by creating visual interpretations of fairy tales.
由文章Application period部分中“Latvia — April 14 till May 14Estonia — May 4 till May 31Belarus — May 11 till June 9 (拉脱维亚——4月14日至5月14日 爱沙尼亚——5月4日至5月31日 白俄罗斯——5月11日至6月9日)”、倒数第三段“The competition entries will be evaluated by a committee selected by the Danish Cultural Institute who will find two winners in each of the two age categories (7-11 and 12-15 years old) for each country. (丹麦文化研究所选定的委员会将对参赛作品进行评估,每个国家将在两个年龄组(7-11岁和12-15岁)中各选出两名获胜者)”可知,每个国家在两个年龄段(7-11岁和12-15岁)中都会选出两名获胜者。因为比赛涉及三个国家(拉脱维亚、爱沙尼亚和白俄罗斯),所以总共会有3个国家×2个年龄段×2名获胜者=12名获胜者。故选D。

A pair of red foxes playing together against a snowy backdrop and a baby polar bear bathing in brilliant sunshine surrounded by a mass of purple fireweed — both scenes are documented by two Canadian wildlife photographers. Martin Gregus and Brittany Crossman are among the 25 shortlisted nominees (被提名的候选人) for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.
Since he was eight years old, Gregus has been passionate about photography, working on projects with his father, who is also a photographer. In 2015, he had the opportunity to visit various areas of the Arctic, where he saw polar bears in a summer climate for the first time. After that, Gregus worked to develop a relationship with the bears in this area, which he says is key to his success in photographing them.
To Gregus, this nomination is more than just a physical award but a chance to connect with others in the profession and celebrate everyone’s achievements. “We live a very secluded life as wildlife photographers. You know, we give up most of our life to film animals, so when we are given a chance to be around people, it’s remarkable.”
Earlier in 2022, Crossman was named the Canadian Wildlife Photographer of the Year by Canadian Geographic. Her nomination for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award, Fox affection, features two red foxes in Ontario. Now, she teaches wildlife workshops for people who are also interested in nature photography.
“Right now, I have been focusing on exploring urban wildlife. I hope in the future that I will get to see other parts of the world, recording different species with my camera. In particular, I’d love to photograph brown bears on the west coast of Canada or Alaska,” Crossman says.
4. Why are the two scenes described in paragraph 1?
A. To show the interaction of two rare species.
B. To introduce two nominated wildlife photographers.
C. To display the harmony between human and nature.
D. To present impressive urban wildlife and landscapes.
5. What can be learned about Gregus?
A. He became known for his Fox affection.
B. He was influenced a lot by his grandfather.
C. He’s been into photography since a young age.
D. He’s been involved in bear conservation for years.
6. What does the underlined word “secluded” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Disconnected. B. Stressful. C. Tough. D. Complicated.
7. What is Crossman’s wish at present?
A. To spend the rest of her life in Alaska.
B. To photograph animals around the world.
C. To set up a wildlife workshop of her own.
D. To get a decent job at Canadian Geographic.
B 5. C 6. A 7. B

根据第一段“A pair of red foxes playing together against a snowy backdrop and a baby polar bear bathing in brilliant sunshine surrounded by a mass of purple fireweed — both scenes are documented by two Canadian wildlife photographers. Martin Gregus and Brittany Crossman are among the 25 shortlisted nominees (被提名的候选人) for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.
根据第二段中“Since he was eight years old, Gregus has been passionate about photography, working on projects with his father, who is also a photographer. (从8岁起,Gregus就对摄影充满了热情,和他的父亲一起工作,他的父亲也是一名摄影师)”可知,他从小就喜欢摄影。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“You know, we give up most of our life to film animals, so when we are given a chance to be around people, it’s remarkable. (你知道,我们放弃了大部分的生活去拍摄动物,所以当我们有机会与人相处时,这显得非常特别)”可知,野生动物摄影师大部分时间花费在拍摄上,很少与人相处,因此他们的生活是与外界隔绝的,画线词意思应该是“与外界隔绝的,孤立的”,与Disconnected“与世隔绝的”意思最为接近。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“I hope in the future that I will get to see other parts of the world, recording different species with my camera. In particular, I’d love to photograph brown bears on the west coast of Canada or Alaska (我希望未来能够看到世界其他地方,用我的相机记录不同的物种。特别的是,我非常想拍摄加拿大西海岸或阿拉斯加的棕熊)”可知,她现在的愿望是拍摄世界各地的动物。故选B项。

Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World is one of the more important books about climate change to have been written. Hayhoe is a gifted public speaker and Saving Us is a follow-up to her awesome TED talk in 2018, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it”.
One of the most refreshing aspects of this book is that Hayhoe recounts both her successes and her failures to communicate, through which she has gathered evidence about what works and what does not. Much of the book’s advice is common sense, all backed up not just by Hayhoe’s experience but also with convincing research by psychologists and social scientists.
Hayhoe advises against trying to engage with a small minority, the “Dismissives”, who “angrily reject the idea that human-caused climate change is a threat; they are most receptive to misinformation and conspiracy theories (阴谋论)”. There is a warning that offering up more facts about climate change can actually increase polarization (两极化) among them.
The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the “Dismissives”, almost entirely older men — including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual respect through a shared passion for knitting — and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is “bond, connect and inspire”, which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality.
She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019. He had been so inspired by her TED talk that he had started to speak to everybody he could in his neighborhood of Wandsworth. He showed her details of 12,000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the council to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
And so, while it may feel difficult to influence the outcome of the COP26 (第26届联合国气候变化大会), Hayhoe’s uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue.
8. What does the book mainly focus on?
A. Developing critical thinking through talking.
B. Sharing communication tips on climate change.
C. Teaching communication skills with TED talks.
D. Promoting people’s insight into climate change.
9. Which of the following best describes the advice in the book?
A. Well-based and workable. B. Uplifting but one-sided.
C. Serious and hard to follow. D. Novel but contradictory.
10. How did Hayhoe win over the “Dismissives”?
A. By talking about conspiracy theories.
B. By showing the threat of climate change.
C. By offering more facts about climate change.
D. By seeking common ground through a shared hobby.
11. What does the author want to say by telling the story in paragraph 5?
A. ’The shift to clean energy is promising.
B. Conversations on climate change do work.
C. People are well-aware of the climate crisis.
D. Policymakers are ignorant of climate changes.
B 9. A 10. D 11. B

由文章第一段中“Hayhoe is a gifted public speaker and Saving Us is a follow-up to her awesome TED talk in 2018, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it”. (Hayhoe是一位有天赋的公众演讲者,《拯救我们》是她2018年精彩的TED演讲的延续,“你能为应对气候变化做的最重要的事情:谈论它”。)”可知,这本书主要关注的是分享关于气候变化的沟通技巧。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“One of the most refreshing aspects of this book is that Hayhoe recounts both her successes and her failures to communicate, through which she has gathered evidence about what works and what does not. Much of the book’s advice is common sense, all backed up not just by Hayhoe’s experience but also with convincing research by psychologists and social scientists. (这本书最令人耳目一新的方面之一是,Hayhoe讲述了她在沟通方面的成功与失败经历,通过这些经历,她收集到了哪些方法有效、哪些方法无效的证据。书中的许多建议都是常识性的,不仅得到了Hayhoe个人经验的支持,还有心理学家和社会科学家的令人信服的研究作为佐证。)”可知,这本书中的建议是有充分根据且可行的。故选A。
由文章第四段“The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the “Dismissives”, almost entirely older men — including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual respect through a shared passion for knitting — and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is “bond, connect and inspire”, which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality.
由文章第五段中“She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019. (书中还讲述了2019年伦敦一场活动结束后,一位男士找到她的故事。他受到她的TED演讲的启发,开始在伦敦旺兹沃斯区的邻里间与尽可能多的人谈论气候变化。他向她展示了由此展开的12,000次对话的细节,声称这些对话帮助说服了当地议会宣布气候紧急状态,并将投资从化石燃料转向可再生能源。)”可知,作者通过讲述第五段的故事想要表达的是关于气候变化的对话确实有效。故选B。
D
After 20 years of efforts, a 26-foot-tall statue of Atlas is once again standing guard at the ancient Temple of Zeus in the city of Agrigento in Sicily. The statue, created in the fifth century B.C.E., was one of 38 similar Atlas monuments built into the temple. They stood in a line between columns with their arms raised, appearing to hold the structure upright.
In Greek mythology (神话) Atlas ignored orders from Zeus, the ruler of the universe, in a war. So, he was forced to hold up the sky on his shoulders. Unlike the mythological Atlas, however, the stone likenesses were unable to hold up Zeus’ temple forever. Ultimately, earthquakes and other events caused the structure to collapse.
For many years, pieces of the statues were spread out around the site amongst other ancient ruins. In 1812, Charles Robert Cockerell, a British architect, first identified one of these sandstone heads during a visit to Agrigento. A century later, in 1920, archaeologist (考古学家) Pirro Marconi became the first person to attempt to reconstruct one of the Atlases, which is now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento.
The seeds of the current project began in 2004, when the Valley of the Temples Park conducted a research campaign at the site. But restoring Atlas in a standing position was particularly challenging, as researchers couldn’t simply pile the pieces of the statue on top of one another. Instead, they attached them to metal shelves, which are supported by a larger metal structure.
The restoration has faced scrutiny (审查) ever since officials first announced it several years ago. “No archaeologist would agree on the use of ancient sculpture even if the purpose is to highlight the site’s antiquity,” said C. Brian Rose, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania. But officials like Renato Schifani, the Sicilian governor, think that the statue’s restoration is a substantial and impressive achievement.
“This statue of ancient Agrigento, which after many years of studies and research we can observe in its natural position, is the heart of an important museum project of the entire area of the Temple of Zeus,” Schifani said.
12. Why did the statue of Atlas stand with his arms upright?
A. It was a symbol of strength
B. It was a punishment from Zeus.
C. It demonstrated a Greek mythological story.
D. It served as a pillar to hold the Temple of Zeus
13. What can we learn about the restoration project?
A. It was a long and demanding process.
B. It extended over a period of 192 years.
C. It restored the statue’s original structure.
D. Pirro Marconi was one of the first advocates.
14. What is C. Brian Rose’s attitude towards the restoration?
A. Supportive. B. Tolerant. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Towering Statue of Atlas Rises Again
B. Debates Arises over the Restoration of Atlas
C. Restoration of the Temple of Zeus Completed
D. Ancient Agrigento Revitalises with New Atlas
C 13. A 14. C 15. A

由文章第二段中“In Greek mythology (神话), Atlas ignored orders from Zeus, the ruler of the universe, in a war. So, he was forced to hold up the sky on his shoulders. (在希腊神话中,阿特拉斯在一场战争中无视了宇宙之王宙斯的命令。因此,他被迫用肩膀扛起天空。)”可知,阿特拉斯的雕像双臂挺直展示了一个希腊神话故事。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第一段中“After 20 years of efforts, a 26-foot-tall statue of Atlas is once again standing guard at the ancient Temple of Zeus in the city of Agrigento in Sicily. (经过20年的努力,一尊26英尺高的阿特拉斯雕像再次矗立在西西里岛阿格里真托市的古老宙斯神庙前,守护着这座神庙。)”和第四段中“But restoring Atlas in a standing position was particularly challenging, as researchers couldn’t simply pile the pieces of the statue on top of one another. Instead, they attached them to metal shelves, which are supported by a larger metal structure. (但是,将阿特拉斯雕像恢复到站立状态特别具有挑战性,因为研究人员不能简单地将雕像的碎片堆叠在一起。相反,他们将这些碎片固定在了金属架子上,而这些架子由一个更大的金属结构支撑。)”可知,这个修复项目经过20年的努力才完成,且不能简单地将雕像的碎片堆叠在一起,因此可以推断出这是一个漫长且要求严格的过程。故选A。
由文章倒数第二段中““No archaeologist would agree on the use of ancient sculpture even if the purpose is to highlight the site’s antiquity,” said C. Brian Rose, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania. (“即使目的是突出遗址的古老性,也没有考古学家会同意使用古代雕塑,”宾夕法尼亚大学考古学家C. Brian Rose说。)”可知,C. Brian Rose认为没有考古学家会同意使用古代雕塑,即使目的是突出遗址的古老性。因此,他对这个修复项目是持反对态度的。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“After 20 years of efforts, a 26-foot-tall statue of Atlas is once again standing guard at the ancient Temple of Zeus in the city of Agrigento in Sicily. The statue, created in the fifth century B.C.E., was one of 38 similar Atlas monuments built into the temple. They stood in a line between columns with their arms raised, appearing to hold the structure upright. 故选A。
We’ve all been there before — you’re in conversation, things are getting along nicely. ___16___ At that moment, your mind goes completely blank, you don’t know what to say, and you can sense the other person’s eyes wandering as they look for someone else to talk to. That scenario (场面) is terrible, so here are three tips to make sure that you never run out of things to say in conversation again.
Firstly, when you find yourself in that situation where your mind has gone blank, play “Reminds Me of”. That just means that you look to the environment around you and say, “You know, that reminds me of…” and then fill in the blank. ___17___ And it can also work as a follow-up when someone finishes telling a story, which is how many groups of friends interact all the time.
Second, when you ask questions, keep them open-ended as often as possible. ___18___ So rather than saying, “Oh, you’re from Toronto. Do you like it there?” you might say, “How do you like Toronto? I’m curious to hear more about it.” You should get the other person talking about the things that they like, which is going to open up more conversational topics.
___19___ This is the third tip. If you’re in a new group and conversation dies after initial pleasantries, a great question is, “How do you guys all know one another?” There’s almost always some kind of story that conversation can build from. If you’re only speaking to one person, you can say instead, “So what’s your story?” The great thing about this question is that it is so open-ended that the other person will probably guide you towards new topics, usually responding with something like, “You mean what do I do for work or what do I like to do for fun?” ___20___
A. It’s great for opening new conversational topics.
B. Then out of nowhere, the awkward silence occurs.
C. So, ask them about their exciting plans for the future.
D. You’d better avoid questions inviting a one-word response.
E. That’s because people don’t like to talk to others different from themselves.
F. For the worst scenario when conversation stops suddenly, use saving questions.
G. His or her tone and enthusiasm will tell you the best angle of conversation to continue with.
B 17. A 18. D 19. F 20. G
前文“We’ve all been there before — you’re in conversation, things are getting along nicely. (我们以前都有过这样的经历——你在交谈,事情进展得很顺利)”引出交谈中事情进展顺利的情境,后文“At that moment, your mind goes completely blank, you don’t know what to say, and you can sense the other person’s eyes wandering as they look for someone else to talk to. (在那一刻,你的大脑一片空白,你不知道该说什么,你可以感觉到对方的眼睛在四处游荡,因为他们在寻找可以说话的人)”具体描述大脑陷入空白,对方想和其他人交谈的尴尬情况,空处应该是表达突然陷入一种糟糕的情况,因此B项“Then out of nowhere, the awkward silence occurs. (然后不知怎么的,尴尬的沉默出现了)”符合语境,承前启后。故选B。
【17题详解】
前文“That just means that you look to the environment around you and say, “You know, that reminds me of…” and then fill in the blank. (这意味着你看看你周围的环境,然后说,“你知道,这让我想起了……”,然后填补空白)”介绍了“这让我想起了”方法,后文“And it can also work as a follow-up when someone finishes telling a story, which is how many groups of friends interact all the time. (当某人讲完一个故事时,它也可以作为后续跟进,这是很多朋友群体一直在互动的方式)”提到这种方法进一步的用处,空处应该是指出这种方法的第一个作用,因此A项“It’s great for opening new conversational topics. (这是开启新的谈话话题的好方法)”符合语境,承接前文,后文是对其递进,其中的It指代前文描述的方法。故选A。
前文“Second, when you ask questions, keep them open-ended as often as possible. (第二,当你问问题的时候,尽可能让它们是开放式的)”建议多问开放式的问题,后文“So rather than saying, “Oh, you’re from Toronto. Do you like it there?” you might say, “How do you like Toronto? I’m curious to hear more about it.” (所以不要说,“哦,你来自多伦多。你喜欢那里吗?”你可能会说:“你觉得多伦多怎么样?”我很想了解更多。”)”举出具体的例子说明应用开放式问题代替非开放式问题,空处应该点明避免非开放式问题,因此D项“You’d better avoid questions inviting a one-word response. (你最好避免一个词就能回答的问题)”符合语境,承接前文,后文是对其例证。故选D。
【19题详解】
后文“If you’re in a new group and conversation dies after initial pleasantries, a great question is, “How do you guys all know one another?” There’s almost always some kind of story that conversation can build from. If you’re only speaking to one person, you can say instead, “So what’s your story?” (如果你在一个新群体里,在最初的寒暄之后,谈话就结束了,一个很好的问题是,“你们是怎么认识彼此的?”几乎总有一些故事可以作为对话的基础。如果你只和一个人说话,你可以说,“那么你的故事是什么?”)”具体介绍了谈话陷入僵局时可以使用的通用式的提问,空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,应该是总地建议用一个通用式的提问,因此F项“For the worst scenario when conversation stops suddenly, use saving questions. (对于最糟糕的情况,当谈话突然停止时,使用保留问题)”符合语境,契合后文内容,是后一句中This指代的对象。故选F。
【20题详解】
前文“If you’re only speaking to one person, you can say instead, “So what’s your story?” The great thing about this question is that it is so open-ended that the other person will probably guide you towards new topics, usually responding with something like, “You mean what do I do for work or what do I like to do for fun?” (如果你只和一个人说话,你可以说,“那么你的故事是什么?”这个问题的好处是,它是开放式的,对方可能会引导你谈论新的话题,通常会这样回答:“你的意思是我做什么工作,或者我喜欢做什么娱乐?”)”提到和一个人说话时可以使用的通用式的提问,并指出这种提问的好处,空处是段末句,应该是继续说明这种提问的好处,因此G项“His or her tone and enthusiasm will tell you the best angle of conversation to continue with. (他或她的语气和热情会告诉你继续谈话的最佳角度)”符合语境,承接前文。故选G。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Julie was a young girl who lived in a small town surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife. But there was one tree that was extra special to her, a tall oak (橡树) that stood in the center of the town square. Julie had grown up playing under its branches with her friends, reading books beneath its shade, and even carving their initials into the tree trunk.
Every evening, Julie would watch town people chat around the oak tree, kids chase after each other in its shade and couple walk arm in arm, with the gentle breeze generated by the tree branch kissing their face.
One day, Julie heard some disturbing news. The city council had decided to cut down the oak tree to make room for new development in the area. Julie was devastated (崩溃). She couldn’t imagine her town without the beautiful oak tree that she loved so much. What’s more, she could not imagine all the comfort provided by the tree would be gone within a few weeks. Also, she was one hundred percent sure no one in her town would allow the tree to be cut down considering its year-long company.
Determined to save the tree, Julie went to the city council meeting and pleaded (恳求) with them to spare it. She talked about all the memories she and the town people had made with the tree, and how important it was to the town’s identity. But the council members were unmoved. They told Julie that the tree was standing in the way of urban development, and it had to go.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Feeling hopeless Julie went home and cried herself to sleep. In her dreams, Julie found herself in a strange town without the familiar oak tree. What she could see was only the indifferent buildings and streets. Upon waking, Julie knew she had to take action. She sincerely published an article in the local newspaper, sharing the beautiful stories of town residents’ interactions with the oak trees. Her words captured the hearts of the town’s people and her voice gradually gained their attention. They began to take various measures, appealing to the government to keep the oak trees.
Finally the city council relented. The city council recognized that the oak tree was the symbol of the town and people’s memories. They announced that they would retain the oak tree and develop a new development plan to accommodate its existence. Julie felt a sense of happiness and satisfaction wash over her. She knew that her efforts had paid off, and that the oak trees would continue to provide shelter and comfort to the people of her town for generations to come. Her persistence had saved not just the oak tree, but also the soul of her hometown.

Participants can submit their creative work electronically by filling in the application form and uploading their competition entry
1. What does the competition aim to do?
A. Enrich children’s pastime activities.
B. Honour a well-known Danish artist.

D. Promote pupils’ creativity in visual arts.
2. When can applicants from Estonia submit their entries?
A. April 14. B. May 1. C. May 10. D. June 9.
3. How many winners will the competition have in total?

To Gregus this nomination is more than just a physical award but a chance to connect with others in the profession and celebrate everyone’s achievements.

In Greek mythology (神话), Atlas ignored orders from Zeus, the ruler of the universe, in a war.

D You’d better avoid questions inviting a one-word response.
E. That’s because people don’t like to talk to others different from themselves.
F. For the worst scenario when conversation stops suddenly, use saving questions.
G. His or her tone and enthusiasm will tell you the best angle of conversation to continue with.
