The continent, particularly its northern region, is ideal for those searching for a perfect winter wonderland during this time of year. Vienna, Austria The beautiful Austrian capital oozes festive charm come the end of the year. And Spittelberg market definitely ups the ante (规格). Gorgeous handicrafts and handmade sweaters are just some of the treats on offer at the festive stalls set among the streets of the Biedermeier Quarter. Visitors can take a slow stroll, while marveling at how the architecture seems tailor made for the holidays. Valkenburg, Netherlands Valkenburg, in the southern Netherlands, has much of the usual European Christmas charms to entice visitors: lights, towering trees, and stalls. However, what makes it distinctive is the fact they can all be found underground. The town’s Christmas Caves have become internationally renowned, with a wide range of stalls selling festive gifts and decorations. The Municipality Cave is home to one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe. Hallstatt, Austria On the banks of Hallstätter See and surrounded by soaring Alpine peaks, the town of Hallstatt and its stunning landscape enjoy UNESCO protection. The 16th-century townhouses, tiny lanes and virtual guarantee of snow come Christmas make the festive mood. Hallstatt’s Christmas market is the stuff of legend. Picture a brightly lit tree, and stalls selling decorations, and handicrafts and you’re halfway to imagining just how special this spot is. Colmar, France All over Europe few capture the imagination or revel in a fairytale setting quite like that of Colmar, in the Alsace region of France. No less than six themed markets can be found in the center, where cozy wooden chalets are packed tightly together. At around 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a children’s choir takes to the local canal, known as Petite Venise, or Little Venice, singing carols and providing even more holiday cheer. 21. What do we know about the four places? A. Valkenburg boasts its largest outdoor Christmas markets in Europe. B. Visitors can enjoy choir singing on Sundays in Colmar. C. The town of Hallstatt features impressive natural scenery. D. The architecture of Biedermeier Quarter was specially designed for Christmas. 22. What distinguishes Valkenburg’s Christmas market from others in Europe? A. Its underground setting. B. The towering Christmas tree. C. Its international reputation. D. A wide range of stalls. 23. Which place suits an audio and imaginative experience at Christmas? A. The town of Hallstatt. B. The Municipality Cave. C. The Biedermeier Quarter. D. Colmar in the Alsace region. B It was a Tuesday night. In my apartment, I was doing three things at once— packing for a trip, trying to get dinner on the table and taking turns with my husband to calm a crying baby. Behind me, one work message after another popped up on my computer screen. I ignored them all. During dinner, a text appeared on my phone: “Where are u???” asked my colleague. I didn’t reply to the text. This wasn’t the first time I’d ignored a digital summons (召唤). I didn’t mean to be disrespectful, but I was also aware of what I wanted my silence to communicate: This is not a priority (优先权) for me now. For those who want to be polite, text-based digital communications can be extremely demanding. Ignoring a text message or an email feels rude, but should it? Cal Newport, the author of A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload, has argued in his book that the etiquette (礼节) of digital communications is and should be different from that of in-person or phone conversation, especially when it comes to the back and forth of hellos, goodbyes and other pleasantries (打趣话). “In an in-person conversation it can feel rude not to finalize an exchange,” he explained. “But in the context of digital communication, the sender often prefers avoiding the receipt of additional messages when possible.” Besides, in an era when we understand more and more the importance of rest and time away from screens, it is essential to prioritize our peace of mind and relationships with the people in our lives: when we’re on vacation; when it’s after 7 pm; when we’re at the dinner table. It’s also worth asking yourself who pressures you for immediate replies. Perhaps it’s not the message sender, but you. A recent study found that we tend to overestimate our colleagues’ expectations for non-urgent work emails outside of work hours. So instead of criticizing yourself for not responding right away, consider slowing down and giving yourself a break. 24. How does the author feel about ignoring the work message during family time? A. Guilty. B. Justified. C. Indifferent. D. Disrespectful. 25. How does Cal Newport view the etiquette of digital communication compared to that of in-person conversation? A. It should be the same. B. It should be abandoned. C. It should be more formal. D. It should be less demanding. 26. What should we do according to the last paragraph? A. Remember to put our family in the first place. B. Find a good way to balance our work and life. C. Realize the urgency and importance of our work. D. Avoid pushing ourselves to respond to messages. 27. Which of the following questions can be answered in the text? A. Is it always rude to ignore digital communications? B. Does politeness matter a lot in digital communications? C. Why should we depend less on digital communications? D. How can we express ourselves in digital communications? C The measurement of blood pressure goes back almost three centuries, leading to the procedure that we all know and that our family doctor performs when we have checkups: A cuff (袖口) goes around our arm, which is first inflated (膨胀), and then deflated (放气), in a controlled manner, to determine our maximum and minimum blood pressure. But the use of inflatable-cuff blood pressure monitors has some disadvantages. For one thing, unless people have home monitors, they must go to a chemistry shop, doctor’s office or health center to learn what their blood pressure is. Another barrier is that repeated inflation and deflation of the cuff can cause difficulties when, for example, a patient is in the hospital and needs frequent blood pressure monitoring. And the last one is that since cuffs don’t allow continuous measurement of blood pressure, they’re only providing a measurement at a specific moment. Today, a new generation of blood pressure devices have been developed and their aim is to make it easier to judge high blood pressure. Unlike traditional devices, they do without the arm cuff and offer blood pressure values on demand. Users just press their finger on a sensor on a watch and ring. The various cuffless measuring devices are based on methods that, instead of directly determining blood pressure, use sensors to capture various indirect signals. These signals are processed by different sets of mathematical procedures to obtain the blood pressure values. It is like inferring fever by measuring an increase in heart beat and sweating instead of using a thermometer (体温表), or divining the result of a soccer match from outside the stadium by listening to the screams of the soccer fans. The development of devices for measuring blood pressure without a blood pressure cuff is progressing rapidly, but that doesn’t mean they are ready used to make diagnostic and treatment decisions. “The road to clinical application may be some day in the near future, but not now,” Avolio says. 28. How many drawbacks of inflatable-cuff blood pressure monitors are there in the text? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five. 29. Which word can replace the underline word “divining” in paragraph 4? A. Changing. B. Describing. C. Guessing. D. Remembering. 30. What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about? A. The working principle of cuffless measuring devices. B. The different methods for setting mathematical procedures. C. The way of cuffless measuring devices to measure indirect signals. D. The connection between inferring fever and measuring blood pressure. 31. What will the writer most probably talk about on cuffless measuring devices next? A. The issue of mass-producing them. B. The processing techniques of them. C. The competitive intensity among their producers. D. The reasons for them not being used in the medical world currently. D If a president, a philosopher, and one of the bestselling authors of all time credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” And Charles Dickens made his point: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.” It’s not just these three great figures who thought walking could improve their creativity. A Stanford University study also discovered that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work. Another famous-person example: As part of his daily writing routine, Kurt Vonnegut would take a midmorning break from his office to walk before eventually returning to work. Our brains work harder to process in different environments, so walking outside helps develop our ability to collect new ideas, to take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors. Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” is a common form of relaxation and medicine in Japan. It was developed in 1982, and recent studies show that being in the forest and walking among the trees lowers your stress levels. But you don’t have to live near a forest to receive the psychological benefits. Research has shown that immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers. So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversation and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder. 32. Which saying can be inferred from the three persons’ words in paragraph1? A. Great minds think alike. B. A still tongue makes a wise head. C. Gentlemen have peace but disagree. D. A wise man appears simple-minded. 33. What can we learn from paragraph 2? A. Walking with a dog or a friend helps creative thinking. B. Walking is a necessary element of Kurt’s creative process. C. Only a few participants are found to benefit from walking. D. There is no connection between walking and generating ideas. 34. Where does the author most probably recommend us to walk? A. On the running machine. B. Down a busy and crowded street. C. In the science museum. D. Through a tree-filled neighborhood. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Walk for Wonder B. Set a Creativity Goal C. Start Forest Bathing D. Walk out of the Comfort Zone 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Positively Channel Your Thoughts The voice within can be your internal guidance system toward development and optimism. 36 It points out shortcomings, restrictions, and concerns. Having control of your inner voice can be an incredibly powerful tool for creating cycles of positive thinking. People who don’t believe in themselves will allow negative thoughts to guide them. It’s essential to break the vicious cycle. 37 It is important for you to write down any negative thoughts coming to your mind so that you may begin to replace these with healthy ones as you begin to change your way of thinking. If you want to live a happy and fulfilling life, it’s vital to surround yourself with people who want to see you do good and support your highest self. You may be familiar with the saying that you are the average of the five people you spend time with. 38 Brain scans can show that friends who spend a lot of time together and expose themselves to a similar environment have similar neural activity patterns. 39 A person with such a pattern tend to be less likely to suffer mental health problems than those with a fixed mindset, who are more likely to become stuck in their ways, with repetitive thoughts circling around their heads. However, those who develop a growth mindset embody perseverance which can guide them toward happiness and success. Often, when someone feels angered, they react without thinking. 40 However, by choosing to respond mindfully rather than react, you are exercising control over your thoughts in a healthy way, So next time you notice an intense thought coming up, take a moment to reflect before respond. A. Well, science backs this up! B. Unhelpful thinking patterns differ in subtle ways. C. You must first learn how to identify these thoughts. D. It usually ends up in them saying something they may regret. E. But sometimes that inner dialogue also presents a critical voice. F. When you influence the brain, new pathways can be established. G. A growth mindset is a belief that your talents are developable over time. Born in a family with a history of getting angry easily, I had always tried to change.
