“Unintended consequences can be quite wonderful when you try something new.” Following are the books with not only the traditional texts, but also audios (音频) by scanning the QR code on the cover.
Henry V by Dan Jones
Henry V is praised as England’s greatest king of the Middle Ages despite only ruling for nine years. He was born to a noble family, and his mother died when he was a boy. At the very time, King Richard Ⅱ protected Henry V. Later, Henry V came to power, strengthened England’s dominance, waged and won battles and inspired a Shakespeare play (also called Henry V).
The Milestone Mystery by Nita Prose
The author of The Mystery Guest returns with another warm-hearted novel featuring Molly Gray, head servant at the Regency Grand Hotel. This time, there’s no murder, but a confounding (令人困惑的) personal puzzle for Molly to sort: the uncharacteristic secret comings and goings of her darling, Juan Manuel. For once, readers will solve the mystery (谜团) before Molly does, but the suspense doesn’t lift until the story’s end.
Saving Michelangelo’s Dome by Wayne Kalayjian
Stanford-trained engineer Wayne Kalayjian’s appealing account explains how modern engineering and architecture owes its foundation to an unexpected factor: inspiration. The round roof in St. Peter’s Basilica, designed by Michelangelo in the mid-1500s, became slightly damaged. In 1742, Benedict XIV employed three mathematicians to fix it. By the book’s end, you’ll wonder why Roger, Francois and Thomas aren’t household names alongside Michelangelo.
Shades of Blue by James Kaplan
If you only own one jazz album, make it Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue. If you only own one music history book, make it James Kaplan’s Shades of Blue. The album set the standard for cool, and in his exploratory book, Kaplan shows how three core artists arrived at the legendary Kind of Blue sessions.
1. What do the four books have in common?
A. They are non-fictional. B. They tell inspiring stories.
C. They have audio versions. D. They are written by experienced writers.
2. Which is the best choice for those eager to read suspense novels?
A. Henry V. B. The Milestone Mystery.
C. Saving Michelangelo’s Dome. D. Shades of Blue.
3. What can we learn from Shades of Blue?
A. It is a jazz album. B. It is a historic book.
C. It records events of key artists. D. It provides the standard for cool.

“My business school colleagues tell me that it’s not called levelling up any more; it’s rebalancing,” says Arlene Holmes-Henderson, a Durham University professor. “I think it's just doing the right thing.”
Holmes-Henderson is discussing her mission to help fix a problem many people don’t know or think about. She wants people to care about the classics, and for all children in the UK to have equal access to classical education. To that end, last month Holmes-Henderson opened the world’s first department devoted to researching classics learning and teaching, at Durham University.
Great paces have been made but it can’t be right, Holmes-Henderson argues, that pupils at private schools in the UK — 7% of the total — get good access to the classics lessons while for the rest it is unequal. “It is certainly the case that there are fantastic state-maintained schools that have an exciting classics lesson. But it is a postcode lottery,” she says. Pupils in the north-east of England have the worst access to classic subjects, while in London there is four times more chance of having classics.
Holmes-Henderson is a former teacher who is passionate about the value of the classics. Her experience, based on years of research, is that teachers, parents and children are doubtful but are soon won over when they do study Latin, for example, because so much of the English vocabulary comes from Latin. “Immediately, young people see the connection. They see it is living. They see it is a language which has a legacy (遗产) and it supports their spelling, their understanding of sentence rules and grammar and its links to other parts of the lessons.”
Holmes-Henderson spent seven years on a study of ancient languages in schools and the results were eye-opening, but there are many barriers ahead. Several days before, Schools Week revealed that the government was cancelling its state school Latin programme to cut costs. So, it seems that all remain to be seen.
4. What is Holmes-Henderson’s mission?
A. To reduce students’ burden. B. To draw people’s attention on universities.
C. To help people address level problems. D. To promote classics learning.
5. What does the underlined phrase “a postcode lottery” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A personal choice. B. A random event.
C. A postal service. D. A national distribution.
6. Why are the young people won over when they study Latin?
A. They appreciate the beauty of classics. B. They’ve received the rich legacy of classics.
C. They realise the value of classics. D. They’re touched by the passionate teacher.
7. What is the author’s attitude to the future of classics lessons?
A. Promising. B. Worrying. C. Hopeless. D. Uncertain.
C
How does the Evil Queen address her mirror in Disney’s Snow White? Unfortunately, there are no points for the answer “Mirror, mirror on the wall.” The actual line is “Magic mirror on the wall.” But don’t worry if you, like so many, slipped up slightly here.
So why does this happen? The short answer is our memories are unreliable. We don’t have a perfect playback of our previous actions. Human memory is undependable.
False memories are memory errors that happen when we remember a past event differently from how it happened: different details, a mix-up of multiple events or even remembering something that never happened. We might think we’ve taken a medication when we haven’t or misremember where we met someone. More serious examples have historically included worries that people might misremember significant (and potentially abusive) childhood events, if controlled by others.
Professor Catherine Loveday from the University of Westminster researches normal and damaged memory. She compares the way that two people can end up with different memories of the same event to cooking: “You both start out with the same ingredients (食材) , but one of you makes noodles and the other makes dumplings.” Our memory is a limited capacity system and when we have gaps in it, our brain tends to fill those in based on general ideas, which can be different for each of us.
“For most of us”, Loveday explains, “we pull together sights and sounds and feelings, and use a set of knowledge to create the sense of a remembered experience. Imagination does the same thing — when we imagine a future event we’re creating it from the building blocks that we have. It’s not that memories are all fictional, but they’re not as accurate as we think they are. We use all sorts of mechanisms to keep them within the bounds of what's likely.”
The idea that our memories are inaccurate can feel unsettling, particularly when we consider the possibility that other people can influence our memories. But how do our brain know a memory is real or not?
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By changing lines from Snow White. B. By presenting a common phenomenon.
C. By making a comparison among people. D. By giving an example of good memory.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Types of false memories. B. Definition of false memories.
C. Disadvantages of false memories. D. Consequences of false memories.
10. Why do we have different memories according to Professor Catherine Loveday?
A. Memories are processed individually. B. Memories wear away gradually.
C People purposely create experiences. D. People integrate all different feelings.
11. What will the author possibly focus on in the following paragraphs?
A. How to judge our memory. B. How to avoid false memories.
C. How others control our memories. D. How to calm down the concerned public.
D
Standing patiently on a small blanket, Callisto the flat-coated dog is being fitted with high-tech headwear. But this is not a new trend in dogs’ fashion: she is about to have her brainwaves recorded.
Callisto is one of about 40 pet dogs taking part in a study to explore whether their brainwaves synchronise (同步) with those of their owners when the pair interact, a phenomenon seen when two humans engage with each other. The researchers behind the work say such synchronisation would suggest person and pet are paying attention to the same things, and in certain circumstances interpreting moments in a similar way. In other words, owner and dog really are on the same wavelength.
Dr. Valdas Noreika of the University of Cambridge says he got the idea for the study after working on similar experiments with mothers and their babies. “Owners change their language in a similar way as parents change when they speak to children,” he says. “That could be one of the reasons why we get so attached to dogs, because we already have these cognitive functions and capacities to attach with someone who is smaller or requires help or attention.”
Dr. Eleanor Raffan, also a member of the Cambridge team, says some experts have urged caution over making assumptions about the human-dog relationship, not least because it is easy to superimpose (叠加) human motives and ways of thinking on to our pets. “I think what would be lovely would be to prove that there is that connection,” she says.
Dr. Colleen Dell, a professor of sociology at the University of Saskatchewan who was not involved in the work, says an important aspect of the research is that it accounts for the experiences of the dog, adding that brainwave synchronisation could be complementary (互补的) to body language as an indicator of dogs’ contentment, happiness and satisfaction. “If the results are positive — showing there is brainwave synchronisation between dogs and humans — it puts the possibilities of interspecies communication on the table too,” she says. However, Dell cautions that it is a one-time study examining very specific regions of the brain.
12. What do we know about Callisto?
A. It is a subject in research. B. It is a high-tech product.
C. It models after its owner’s behaviour. D. It records her brainwaves.
13 What motivates Dr. Valdas Noreika to conduct the experiment?
A. The desire to know dogs’ wavelengths. B. The curiosity about dogs’ languages.
C. The urge to require help from dogs. D. The way people speak to dogs.
14. What is a limitation of the experiment?
A. The number of samples is small. B. The equipment is inaccurate.
C. It involves only a small part of the brain. D. It leads to imprecise prediction.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Are People Fond of Dogs?
B. Why do Dogs Follow Owners’ Orders?
C. Like-minded: Dogs and Owners Participate in Brainwave Study
D. High-minded: Dogs Interact with Their Owners in an Experiment

Trap crops are an interesting solution for organic garden pest (害虫) control. Along with other forms of companion planting, trap crops can be relatively effective for crop protection. ____16____, they are certainly an essential part of an effective and integrated pest management system.
____17____, and they are purposely grown to attract insect pests. Riddled with pests, these trap crops then attract the natural enemies of these insects, thus helping maintain a natural balance in the ecosystem to keep pest numbers in check.
Radishes (萝卜) are one trap crop that I would highly recommend. ____18____. Their smell drives away many pests. They grow very quickly and thus can be intercropped to make the most of space and time-I often place some around slower-growing members of the cabbage family.
In our small-town high school, a tradition was observed annually during the graduation: the school would award a gold and blue trophy (奖杯) to the class valedictorian (毕业生代表) , the student who had maintained the highest grades for four years. This trophy, a symbol of academic achievement, was decorated with a large gold “V” on the base, and the winner's name was elegantly carved in gold on the side.
I desired that trophy more than anything. It was not just a title of valedictorian or the brief acknowledgment speech for the trophy at the graduation ceremony. It was four years of hard work and all those great ambitions.
However, there was a problem: The school's Board required the student to contribute fifteen dollars towards the trophy, which, to be honest, did not fully cover the cost. And if a student couldn't afford the fifteen dollars, the trophy would go to the next in line. I had been a straight-A student since the first grade. But my family struggled to make ends meet.
As the graduation neared, my headmaster asked me to his office one day.
“Martha” he said, “you’ve been performing exceptionally well, and we believe you’ll be the winner of the valedictorian trophy. And, there’s the rule, you know.”
I cast my eyes downward, “Yes, sir. I'll let you know tomorrow. ”
I was very sad and dragged myself into the headmaster’s office the next day.
“My father. . . said he . . . can't pay the fifteen dollars.” I choked.
(Silence. )
I looked up, forcing my eyes to stay dry. “He said that if I had to pay for it, then it wouldn’t truly be a valedictorian trophy.”
The headmaster sighed loudly, biting his lip as if thinking about something. “Perhaps it’s time to make a change.” He reached for the phone.
I walked out of his office.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Hearing angry voice and arguing, I stopped.

On graduation day, I finally received the trophy I had longed for.

By the book’s end, you’ll wonder why Roger, Francois and Thomas aren’t household names alongside Michelangelo.

A. Promising. B. Worrying. C. Hopeless. D. Uncertain.
D 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第二段中“Holmes-Henderson is discussing her mission to help fix a problem many people don’t know or think about. She wants people to care about the classics, and for all children in the UK to have equal access to classical education. (Holmes-Henderson正在讨论她的使命,即帮助解决一个许多人不知道或不考虑的问题。她希望人们关注古典文学,希望英国所有的孩子都能平等地接受古典教育。)”可知,Holmes-Henderson 是想要推动古典文学学习。故选D项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词句前文“Great paces have been made but it can’t be right, Holmes-Henderson argues, that pupils at private schools in the UK - 7% of the total - get good access to the classics lessons while for the rest it is unequal. (Holmes-Henderson认为,英国私立学校的学生(占总数的7%)有很好的机会学习古典文学课程,而其他学校的学生则不平等,这样是不正确的。)”可知,虽然Holmes-Henderson 认为虽然有少部分学生能很好学习古典文学,但是大部分学生受到古典文学教育的机会是完全不平等的,因此在公立学校受到古典文学教育是一个随机事件,从而推知划线部分意思是“随机事件”。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Immediately, young people see the connection. They see it is living. They see it is a language which has a legacy (遗产) and it supports their spelling, their understanding of sentence rules and grammar and its links to other parts of the lessons. (年轻人立刻看到了这种联系。他们看到它是活生生的。他们看到这是一种有遗产的语言,它支持他们的拼写、对句子规则和语法的理解,以及它与课程其他部分的联系。)”可知,当学生们学习拉丁语后,学生们就发现了拉丁语和英语之间的联系,这也就是学习古典文学的价值和好处。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Holmes-Henderson spent seven years on a study of ancient languages in schools and the results were eye-opening, but there are many barriers ahead. Several days before, Schools Week revealed that the government was cancelling its state school Latin programme to cut costs. So, it seems that all remain to be seen. (Holmes-Henderson花了七年时间研究学校里的古代语言,结果令人大开眼界,但前面还有很多障碍。几天前,《学校周刊》透露,政府将取消公立学校的拉丁语课程,以削减成本。所以,一切似乎还有待观察。)”可知,虽然 Holmes-Henderson 做出的努力有一定成效,但也存在很多的障碍,所有的事情都有待观望,因此作者对于古典文学课程的未来是不确定的。故选D项。
C. People purposely create experiences. D. People integrate all different feelings.
11. What will the author possibly focus on in the following paragraphs?
A. How to judge our memory. B. How to avoid false memories.
C. How others control our memories. D. How to calm down the concerned public.
B 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据第一段中“How does the Evil Queen address her mirror in Disney’s Snow White? Unfortunately, there are no points for the answer “Mirror, mirror on the wall.” The actual line is “Magic mirror on the wall.” But don’t worry if you, like so many, slipped up slightly here.
根据第三段中“False memories are memory errors that happen when we remember a past event differently from how it happened: different details, a mix-up of multiple events or even remembering something that never happened. We might think we’ve taken a medication when we haven’t or misremember where we met someone. (错误记忆是指当我们对过去事件的记忆与它的发生方式不同时发生的记忆错误:不同的细节,多个事件的混淆,甚至记住从未发生过的事情。我们可能会认为自己吃了药,但实际上没有,或者记错了我们在哪里见过某人。)”可知,本段开始介绍了什么是错误记忆,然后举例说明。所以本段是在定义错误记忆。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Our memory is a limited capacity system and when we have gaps in it, our brain tends to fill those in based on general ideas, which can be different for each of us. (我们记忆是一个容量有限的系统,当我们的记忆有空白时,我们的大脑倾向于根据一般的想法来填补这些空白,这对我们每个人来说都是不同的。)”可知,人们的记忆是有空缺的,而每个人会根据自己的感知和知识填满这些空缺,记忆的处理是独特的,从而导致每个人的记忆过程不一样。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“But how do our brain know a memory is real or not? (但是我们的大脑是如何知道记忆是真的还是错的呢?)”可知,作者提出了一个问题:我们的大脑如何知道一段记忆正确与否? 因而下文应该谈论的是如何判断记忆正确与否。故选A项。
13. What motivates Dr.
A 13. D 14. C 15. C

Valdas Noreika of the University of Cambridge says he got the idea for the study after working on similar experiments with mothers and their babies. ‘Owners change their language in a similar way as parents change when they speak to children,’ he says(剑桥大学的瓦尔达斯·诺雷卡博士说,他在对母亲和婴儿进行类似实验后产生了开展这项研究的想法。他说:‘主人和宠物交流时改变语言的方式,和父母跟孩子说话时改变语言的方式很相似’)”可知,瓦尔达斯·诺雷卡博士发现人们和狗说话的方式与父母跟孩子说话的方式很相似,这促使他进行这项实验。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“However, Dell cautions that it is a one time study examining very specific regions of the brain.(然而,戴尔提醒说,这是一项只针对大脑特定区域的一次性研究)”可知,这项实验的局限性在于它只涉及大脑的一小部分。
根据第一段“Callisto is one of about 40 pet dogs taking part in a study to explore whether their brainwaves synchronise (同步) with those of their owners when the pair interact, a phenomenon seen when two humans engage with each other.(卡利斯托是大约40只参与一项研究的宠物狗之一,该研究旨在探索当狗和主人互动时,它们的脑电波是否会同步,这一现象在两个人互动时也会出现)”以及后文围绕该研究展开的一系列介绍,如研究动机、不同专家看法等,可知文章重点是狗和主人参与的脑电波同步研究。

They are also very attractive to a variety of insects.
Mustard (芥菜) , a small plant with yellow flowers, can also be used as a trap crop. I sometimes leave a few mustard plants in place for some common pests, sometimes even allowing one or two plants to self-seed. But ensure that you plant Mustard away from your cabbages as they belong to the same family. ____19____.
These plants are just several beneficial trap crops I have found to be effective at least to a degree in my garden. ____20____. But experimenting with trap crops and other companion planting is certainly essential in pest management in an organic garden.
A. Results may vary where you live
B. They can be good trap plants for a range of reasons
C. Pests and disease can move between these related species
D. They can easily be placed between other slower-growing plants
E. Even though trap crops protect both your plants and the environment
F. Trap crops are plants placed in the garden to protect the primary crops
G. Though I certainly would not say these alone are enough to protect your crops
E 17. F 18. B 19. C 20. A
根据上文“ Trap crops are an interesting solution for organic garden pest (害虫) control. Along with other forms of companion planting, trap crops can be relatively effective for crop protection.(陷阱作物是有机控制花园害虫的一种有趣的解决方案。
根据下文“and they are purposely grown to attract insect pests. Riddled with pests, these trap crops then attract the natural enemies of these insects, thus helping maintain a natural balance in the ecosystem to keep pest numbers in check.(它们是特意种植来吸引害虫的。这些陷阱作物布满了害虫,然后吸引这些昆虫的天敌,从而帮助维持生态系统的自然平衡,控制害虫的数量。)”可知,下文提到陷阱植物特意被种植来吸引害虫的天敌,从而维持生态平衡,控制害虫的数量,故F选项“诱捕作物是种在花园里用来保护主要作物的植物”符合语境,总领下文内容,故选F。
【18题详解】
根据下文“Their smell drives away many pests. They grow very quickly and thus can be intercropped to make the most of space and time-I often place some around slower-growing members of the cabbage family. They are also very attractive to a variety of insects.(它们的气味赶走了许多害虫。它们生长非常快,因此可以间作,以充分利用空间和时间——我经常在生长较慢的卷心菜家族成员周围种植一些。它们对各种昆虫也很有吸引力)”可知,下文介绍了萝卜可以作为诱虫植物的诸多原因,故B选项“它们因为种种原因可以成为很好的透虫作物”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“But ensure that you plant Mustard away from your cabbages as they belong to the same family.(但是要确保你把芥末和卷心菜分开种植,因为它们属于同一科)”可知,本句与上句构成了递进关系,说明把芥末和卷心菜分开种植的原因,故C选项“疾病和病虫害可以在这些有联系的物种之间传播”符合语境,故选C。
根据上文“These plants are just several beneficial trap crops I have found to be effective at least to a degree in my garden.(这些植物只是我发现在我的花园里至少在一定程度上有效的几种有益的诱捕作物)”以及下文“But experimenting with trap crops and other companion planting is certainly essential in pest management in an organic garden. (但是试验陷阱作物和其他配套种植在有机花园的害虫管理中当然是必不可少的)”可知,上文提到这些植被是作者发现的一些诱虫植物在花园内至少能发挥一定程度效果,下文又提到有必要去尝试这些诱虫植物,推测下文与本句构成转折关系,主要说明上文提到的种植诱捕作物的结果。故A选项“结果可能会根据你生活的地方变化”符合语境,故选A。

As the graduation neared my headmaster asked me to his office one day.
“Martha,” he said, “you’ve been performing exceptionally well, and we believe you’ll be the winner of the valedictorian trophy.

On graduation day, I finally received the trophy I had longed for.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing angry voices and the sound of arguing, I stopped. The headmaster office door was half open, and through the gap, I saw my headmaster on the phone, his face got red with determination as he made his case. I held my breath, my fingers crossed behind my back, hoping with all my might that he was fighting for me. The words “scholarship” and “deserves” floated out into the hallway. I leaned against the wall, my heart pounding with the rhythm of his argument. Tears streamed down without my being aware of it.
On graduation day, I finally received the trophy I had longed for. As I walked across the stage, the grand trophy glittered under the bright lights, the big “V” and my name shining like a ray of hope. The audience cheered. My headmaster smiled with pride. Holding the trophy tightly, I felt a rush of warmth - it was more than just a symbol of achievement; it was a sign to the power of advocacy. My classmates patted me on the back, and I knew that this trophy had become a cherished memory we would all share, a memory that celebrated not just academic success but also the compassion and dedication of an educator who had gone above and beyond.
