If you are a mountain enthusiast, you may want to try climbing these four mountains below, which may bring you a different experience.
Annapurna Fatality(死亡)rate is 1: 3
Annapurna is the tenth highest mountain in the world at 8, 091m high — but it is also the world’s deadliest mountain, with the highest fatality rate of any peak in the world. This mountain has the high-risk challenges on the rise including avalanches(雪崩)and rolling ice and dropping rocks, on top of the usual demands on the body and mind that come with climbing such a huge peak. Only extremely experienced mountaineers should even consider climbing a peak such as this.
Kilimanjaro The Roof of Africa
Soaring upwards from the Tanzania-Kenya border, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain at 5, 895m, one of the Seven Summits and the world’s highest standalone mountain. Also known as “the Roof of Africa”, the dormant(休眠的)volcano’s sheer scale combines with geological features, natural beauty and a rich human history to attract 30, 000-plus climbers annually. Kilimanjaro is very popular with both experienced hikers and first time adventurers because it is considered to be the easiest of the Seven Summits.
Mount Chogori Second highest mountain
Mount Chogori is the second highest mountain in the world with a peak of 8, 611m. Mount Chogori’s remoteness and long approach make expeditions extremely resource-intensive and lengthy. It’s known for bad weather and avalanches, which claim the lives of many who attempt it. With the attraction of climbing any mountain above 8, 000m also comes an potential risk of life.
Alps Stretching through 8 European countries
In the Alps, mountains stretch for around 1, 200 kilometres through 8 European countries. And thanks to their location in the heart of Europe, this is one of the most accessible mountain chains in the world. This means you do’t have to scale snow-capped summits to appreciate their jaw-dropping beauty. Imagine going up to altitudes of over 3, 000 metres in a cable car or mountain railway.
1. What may not be the challenging factors to climb Annapurna?
A. The peak. B. Avalanches. C. Demands on mind. D. Physical power.
2. What do Kilimanjaro and Alps have in common?
A. They have similar altitudes. B. They are not very difficult to climb.
C. They claim many lives every year. D. They both provide the volcanic scenery.
3. Which mountain is the highest among the four mentioned in the text?
A. Kilimanjaro. B. Annapurna. C. Chogori. D. Alps.
B
“I swear to you, if you just did this one thing every day that takes less than five minutes, in three months from now, you’d be a completely different person.” “Okay, ” I thought. “I’m listening.” I was surfing on TikTok one night when I came across a video by Emma Marschall, a holistic therapy (整体治疗) expert. She was talking about the concept of bodily shaking: Something that’s said to help release hurt, stress and anxiety.
Bodily therapy is a treatment that aims to treat mental and emotional conditions, like PTSD and anxiety, through the connections to mind and body, like grounding techniques. “Put on one or two of your favourite songs that get you going, ” explains Marschall. “Plant your two feet on the ground and keep them grounded the entire time. Then all you have to do is. . . shake it out. ” “Shake. Get that energy out, ” she says.
But how can simply shaking your body help you feel less anxious? When our bodies are stressed, we go into “fight or flight” mode — when, back in the day, our cave people selves would have had to fight animals or other groups of people to survive, this mechanism (生物体内的机制) would have come in very handy. But now, our “fight or flight” mode can be triggered (触发) from a passive aggressive work meeting, or someone aggressively staring at us on the tube. When we’re stuck in one place and feel trapped, our bodies can store up this adrenaline (肾上腺素) and cause us to experience anxiety and stress. According to Dr Peter Levine, shaking can help release muscular tension, as well as burn this extra adrenaline, and calm the nervous system to its neutral state.
Animals have been known to shake to help regulate their systems. Think of dogs stretching and shaking after they get up, or when they’re scared. Some commented on Marschall’s video, saying, “Dogs shake to rid themselves of anxiety so this actually makes sense. ”
4. What do we know about bodily therapy?
A. It is created by an actress on TikTok. B. It should be conducted in a quiet place.
C. It is used to connect mind and body. D. It brings benefits to mental health.
5. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The origin of the “fight or flight” mode. B. The negative effects of modern life on people.
C. The reasons why shaking can relieve anxiety. D. The difference between modern and ancient stress.
6. Why does the author talk about animals?
A. To prove shaking a natural-born action. B. To attract more comments.
C. To encourage humans to learn from animals. D. To stress reliability of shaking.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. TikTok: A Platform for Therapy. B. The New Trend of Bodily Shake.
C. Emma Marschall’s Video Class. D. Bodily Shake Reducing Anxiety.
C
Most have probably heard of Henry David Thoreau and his book Walden, even though his message of simplicity may sound outdated. Nowadays, smartphones flood us with text messages. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones. Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
Thoreau would beg to differ. As a writer who advocated the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, he was a contrarian (叛逆者) for his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of large factories, expanding urban developments, and powerful machines.
Turned off by the constant busyness of this time, Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden. In the book, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement. We are not living meaningful lives due to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient. Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, “men have become the tools of their tools”.
That is to say, we are not the ones controlling technology. Technology is controlling us. Every few minutes, smartphones may distract us with messages. At least half of Americans check their phones several times an hour. Meanwhile, information overload from social media can weaken our concentration and heighten confusion.
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion it may be healthy to simplify life by reducing technology overuse. Personally, I’ve done so in two ways. First, I use very little data on my phone and keep the apps on it to a minimum. Most time, I only use my phone to call or text. Second, I quit most social media. Sure, those two things aren’t as extreme as Thoreau withdrawing into the woods. Nevertheless, they’re realistic moves I can make toward living a more meaningful life.
8. Why does the author refer to Thoreau’s book Walden in Paragraph1?
A. To tell the characters of Thoreau. B. To attract more consumers.
C. To bring in the concept of simple life. D. To discuss the advantage of smartphones.
9. What might drive Thoreau to live in the woods?
A. The purpose to keep fit. B. His plan of writing a book.
C. The pace of his time. D. His worry about technology.
10. What is the author’s attitude to Thoreau’s words “men have become the tools of their tools”?
A. Tolerant. B. Doubtful. C. Approving. D. Critical.
11. What is the author’s main argument in this text?
A. Modern technology improves our lives. B. Simplicity in a way helps live a meaningful life.
C. We should withdraw from modern society. D. Powerful machines are necessary for progress.
D
As the world’s population grows, we are quickly running out of land to grow enough crops to feed everyone. But now a new agricultural company believes it has the answer. If it lives up to its promise, the approach could revolutionize the way we feed.
This company started a farm in Compton, Los Angeles. It’s a far cry from the story-book picture of a farm: there’s no mud, no boots, no hens pecking in the yard. The new system they’re pioneering inside can produce up to 350 times the yield compared to a traditional farm. What’s more, their system uses just 10 percent of the water and zero pesticides — and it can be replicated (复制) almost anywhere.
At the Compton farm, every step of the process, from seed to shipping, is automated. From the moment that a worker tips a bag of seeds into the drum of the seed-sowing machine, the machines take over.
The company’s staff include nearly 80 plant scientists. It's their job to decipher (辨认) the optimal (最佳的) growing conditions for each plant and feed that information back to the company’s more than100 hardware and software engineers.
“Plants are really just little software programs,” says Storey. “The DNA of a plant tells it what to do, what to build, how to react to the environment around it.”
By building a deep understanding of each plant’s physiology, scientists have learned how to push the buttons of the plants’ DNA — without modifying it — to program qualities like growth, flavor, texture and nutrition. For instance, hitting a plant with blue light, at the right point in its growth cycle, gives its leaves a satisfying crunch during harvest time. Since they’ve never been in contact with soil, pesticides or human hands, there’s no need to wash them.
The biggest challenge facing the natural world, right now, is habitat loss. Do farms like the one at Compton hold the key?
12. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Quite distinct from. B. Similar to.
C. Completely free from. D. Related to.
13. What can we learn about the new farm system?
A. It does harm to the environment. B. It can be copied in other places.
C. It requires a large amount of water. D. It has raised production costs.
14. Why is “hitting a plant with blue light” mentioned?
A. To give plants’ leaves a satisfying crunch.
B. To avoid the need to wash plants.
C. To show the effect of mastering plants’ physiology.
D. To explain plants’ reaction to the environment.
15. What can we infer about the new farming system from the text?
A. It helps scientists and engineers work independently.
B. It requires scientists to mainly modify the DNA of plants.
C. It may have a positive influence on the natural world.
D. It will completely replace traditional farming soon.

There was a writing competition she wanted to enter — kind of. She loved writing, but lately, she just couldn’t be bothered. It was as if all her energy had been drained away (耗尽). She stared at the blank page in her notebook, willing the words to come, but they remained hard to find.
Then Zoe moved into their class. Everything about her gave off light and energy. From the way she bounced into the classroom to how she slung her backpack over her chair with carefree grace, Harriet was fascinated and desperate to know more about her. Zoe seemed to possess (拥有) an endless supply of vitality (活力), something Harriet sorely lacked.
Her chance came during sports class when they were placed on the same running team. Harriet’s heart pounded not from the exercise, but from the anticipation of finally speaking to Zoe. “Where do you get all your energy from? ” Harriet suddenly said out loud during a break. Zoe smiled mysteriously. “Lie down, ” she said. Confused but curious, Harriet followed Zoe’s lead and lay down on the grass. Next thing she knew, they were both looking up at the white fluffy clouds floating lazily above them.
“Isn’t this incredible?” Zoe said, her voice filled with wonder. Harriet looked up, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she really saw the sky. The world suddenly seemed so much bigger and more expansive. The clouds were like giant cotton balls, floating in an endless sea of blue. How could just changing your perspective change so much? “We spend too much time looking down, at our phones, at our feet, but not enough time looking up, ” said Zoe.

5 What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. D 7. D

When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by reducing technology overuse.
8 Why does the author refer to Thoreau’s book Walden in Paragraph1?
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. C 11. B

School, school, school. Every day was the same. Harriet felt like she was on a never-ending treadmill (跑步机), going through the motions without any real purpose. She was losing steam, and eventually found herself feeling numb.
Harriet’s heart pounded, not from the exercise, but from the anticipation of finally speaking to Zoe.

【答案】范文
The next day, Harriet woke up and knew exactly what she wanted to do. She grabbed her notebook and pen, feeling a renewed sense of excitement. Determined to capture the essence of what Zoe had shown her, she began to write. Harriet wrote about the sky, the clouds, and the feeling of endless possibilities that came with looking up. She poured her heart and soul into her piece, driven by a newfound passion for life and a desire to share it with others.
Then came the day for the writing competition results. Harriet stood nervously among her classmates, her heart racing with anticipation. When the announcer read out her name as the winner, she could hardly believe her ears. She had never felt such a rush of joy and pride. As she walked up to receive her prize, she saw Zoe clapping and smiling warmly. She approached Zoe afterwards, gratitude shining in her eyes, and whispered, “Thank you for reminding me to look up and see the beauty in the world.” Zoe simply smiled and nodded, knowing that sometimes, all it takes is a small change in perspective to make a world of difference.
