Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (无人驾驶车) and face this terrible choice: The car must either turn left and hit a person, or turn right and hit many. On top of this “moral dilemma (道德困境)”, if the car doesn’t turn, you might get hurt. What decision would you expect it to make?
In life-and-death situations, should autonomous vehicles put passengers first or pedestrians? Should they prioritize (优先考虑) the greater good or one person’s safety? These have been a central topic for several years. However, there can be no completely perfect solution.
“A moral dilemma is a dilemma; it has no clear solution by design (设计),” wrote Derek Leben, a professor of ethics (伦理学).
When studying these questions of autonomous vehicles, Iyad Rahwan, an MIT scientist, found that people are selfish. “People buying these cars, they want cars that prioritize the passenger,” Rahwan told Science News. “But they want other people’s cars to protect pedestrians instead.”
Autonomous vehicles bring not only moral dilemmas but also other challenges. When there is an accident, who should be responsible for it, the company of the autonomous vehicle, or the “driver”?
In July, a self-driving taxi by Baidu hit a pedestrian in Wuhan, Hubei, who ran a red light. Baidu worked with the police and took the pedestrian to the hospital. In another accident in April in Seattle, US, the responsibility fell on the “driver” since the “driver” was on his phone.
The situations of different accidents caused by autonomous vehicles are so complicated (复杂的) that “now there are no clear rules”, Ji Xuehong, a researcher from North China University of Technology.
32. How does the writer begin the first paragraph?
A. By giving numbers. B. By raising a question. C. By telling a story. D. By comparing two things.

A. To call for clear rules for autonomous vehicles.
B. To discuss whether to have autonomous vehicles.
C. To talk about the challenges autonomous vehicles face.
D. To discuss how to make a right decision in a dilemma.
34. What does Derek Leben think about the moral dilemma?
A. It can be dealt with easily. B. There is no perfect solution.
C. It can be avoided by design. D. It won’t happen in real life.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Successful Development of Autonomous Vehicles.
B. Difficult Choices and Challenges for Autonomous Vehicles.
C. How to Make Autonomous Vehicles Safer And Cheaper?
D Should Autonomous Vehicles Be Responsible for Accidents?
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. B

The Maori arrived in New Zealand from Polynesian (波利尼西亚) islands about a thousand years ago. They were the first people to live in New Zealand.
In the late 18th century, Europeans came to live in New Zealand. At that time, the population of the Maori was maybe 250,000 in New Zealand. Over the next one hundred years, wars and disease killed many Maori people. By the end of the 19th century, there were only about 40,000 Maori people left. During this time, the Maori also lost much of their land to the Europeans. Many of them were afraid that they might lose their traditions and language too, but this did not happen.
Today the Maori population is increasing. There are about 500,000 Maori people in New Zealand. Most live like other New Zealanders, but they are keeping the Maori language and traditions alive. There are now Maori radio and television stations. Many schools teach in the Maori language. Nearly one half of Maori language speakers are 25 years old or younger.
Maori culture is also alive and well. At the center of Maori culture is the “marae”. This is a special place for ceremonies and meetings. Today the number of marae in New Zealand is increasing. Many of the new marae are in the cities. Now people in the cities can meet and learn about their Maori traditions.
Today most New Zealand cities have Maori festivals each year. Among festival activities are competitions in speaking, dancing and singing. Children practice for months. Then all the Maori in the area arrive to watch the competitions and see who wins.
The Maori have gone through hard times. Today they live a comfortable, modern life. They keep their cultural traditions alive, because they have passed and are passing them on to their children.
36. How do the Maori keep their traditions alive?
a. Increase the number of marae.
b. Move to the center of New Zealand.
c. Set up Maori radio and TV stations.

Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (无人驾驶车) and face this terrible choice: The car must either turn left and hit a person or turn right and hit many.

A. The Successful Development of Autonomous Vehicles.

Sarah: I love animals more than anything else. I’ve wanted to be a vet (兽医) since I was ten. You have to study for about seven years, and you have to be very smart and get good grades for all your exams. You must have work experience with animals before you study, too. I’m sure I can do all these things well. The only thing I don’t like about this job is that you can get very sad when animals die.
Elisa: I know what I’m going to do. I have always loved cooking so I’m going to be a cook. I’ll go to college for about two years where I’ll learn all about cooking. Then I’ll work in a kitchen until I can become a real cook. I’m going to buy a restaurant and have lots of staff who do everything I ask! If I’m lucky, I’ll even have a TV show like Jamie Oliver, a famous cook who’s popular for his TV show The Happy Days Live Tour. Most famous cooks are men but there are a lot of very good women cooks, too. I’ll be one of them!
Tara: I don’t know what I’m going to do. I used to think about getting a job as a policewoman but I don’t like studying very much. I enjoy playing football, but I can’t really get a job doing that. Really, I want a part-time job which gives me lots of money! My mum says I’m lazy, but I just want an easy life. So do my friends.
