Emojis are widely used on the Internet. The word “emoji” comes from Japanese, meaning “picture character”. Emojis are small images (图像) that can be sent within text messages. They make it easier to express an idea or feeling without the need to type a lot of words.
The first set of emojis was created in 1997 by a Japanese company for their new telephones. This set included 90 black and white emoji characters, but they were not widely used because of low sales. It wasn’t until two years later when Shigetaka Kurita created 176 emojis for another Japanese phone company that emojis started to become popular worldwide.
Now, there are more than 3,000 emojis to choose from on nearly every texting platform (平台). The images may look a little different on different platforms, but they share the same meaning. New emojis are added every year to show things in the real world. The Unicode Consortium (统一码联盟) decides which emojis are accepted.
Emojis have changed the way people express ideas in text messages. They were once seen as inappropriate at serious working places, but that is changing. It is now common for people to include a lively emoji in their work emails. Some offices even communicate with emojis that only people in the company will understand.
However, the meaning of an emoji can be different from person to person. For example, some might think the emoji “” means “prayer”. Others might see it as “high five”. Still others might think it means “please” or “thank you”.
People love emojis so much that there is a World Emoji Day on July 17, chosen because that is the day shown on the calendar emoji. Some celebrate by texting only with emojis. It is clear that emojis have become a new form of communication that continues to develop.

Have you ever noticed the sidewalks for the blind in everyday life? They are very important for the people who can’t see. Yu Guanbin, a blind man from Shenzhen, showed us the new changes to the sidewalks for the blind in his city.
Yu unluckily became blind over 10 years ago. At that time, it was not easy for him to go outside. As there were no sidewalks for the blind in many places across the city, Yu easily got lost. He had to stay at home as much as possible. “However, things have changed a lot recently. Most roads in the city now have sidewalks for the blind. I go to work on foot every day. It only takes me 15 minutes. I can also walk to a nearby bread shop to buy breakfast and take the underground to my friends’ homes on weekends,” said Yu.
What’s more, the new sidewalks are more user-friendly. For example, the sidewalks are 30 centimeters to 50 centimeters away from the green plants along the roads. “Such careful design makes us feel safer while walking,” Yu said. “On my way to the office, a new manhole cover (井盖) is also put into use. The sidewalk can lie over the manhole cover, so we don’t need to make a turn like before.”
Now, most roads have sidewalks for the blind. However, there are still some problems. Some people misuse the sidewalks by leaving their cars there. Also, blind people need something that can make sound at traffic lights to help them cross the roads. Yu hopes to see more great changes in the future.

Have you ever heard of dyslexia (失读症)? Many people believe that the famous physicist, Albert Einstein (1879-1955), had dyslexia. But did you know that researchers at the Cass Business School in London have found that a large percentage of business owners-possibly as many as 35%-are dyslexic?
A person with dyslexia has difficulty reading, understanding and memorizing written information. Anybody can be dyslexic-even a genius (天才) like Einstein . If you haven’t realized it yet, dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, and it can be an advantage. At least 10% of the world population is dyslexic. It often runs in the family, from one age group to the next.
Michael, 23, has had trouble with dyslexia for years. He has recently finished university, where he studied Business Management. He’s intelligent, kind and funny-but things haven’t been easy for him. When he was seven years old, Michael’s teacher noticed that he couldn’t read easily. After a few weeks, an expert found out that the problem was dyslexia. Soon after that, Michael started learning new ways to read during his childhood and teenage years, studying was a huge challenge. “If my non-dyslexic classmates needed ten minutes to read and understand something, ________.” We have to admire the courage and efforts it takes dyslexic people to study and pass exams.
For centuries, education has depended on reading, writing and memory. These skills are important, but the 21st-century workplace needs other talents, such as creativity. Here’s where people with dyslexia may have an advantage. People like Michael have spent years creating strategics (策略) to manage their dyslexia, and being able to solve problems gives them a big advantage in the world of business, too.
“I really believe dyslexia has made me stronger. I’ve never been afraid to take risks. I’ve already faced a lot of challenges in my life, but with patience and hard work things have gone really well for me so far!”
27.What can we learn about dyslexia from the text?
A.It is a speaking and spelling difficulty.
B.Only 10%of business owners have it.
C.It has a strong influence on intelligence.
D.People may pass it down in a family.
28.Which of the following can be put in the blank ________ in Paragraph 3?
A.it would just be a piece of cake for me.
B.sometimes I needed three times longer.
C.then I might help others after I made it.
D.it might take me less time to finish it.
29.What advantage might people with dyslexia have?
A.They can solve problems creatively.
B.They have excellent memories.
C.They can avoid problems in learning.
D.They have higher intelligence.
30.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To explain what causes people to suffer from dyslexia.
B.To warn us the danger of having dyslexia in daily lives.
C.To tell us dyslexia is both a challenge and an advantage.
D.To introduce the latest research on patients with dyslexia.

A Mistake, a Change
Everyone makes mistakes in daily life, and so do I.
Once, I argued loudly with my parents because they disagreed with my choice of friends. At that moment, I felt misunderstood and angry. However, later I realized that they were concerned about my well-being. This argument made me understand the importance of communication and respect. I started to listen more and tried to express my thoughts calmly. In doing so, I found my parents were more receptive to my viewpoints. This experience taught me that mistakes can lead to personal growth if we reflect on them and are willing to make changes.

Everyone makes mistakes in daily life, and so do I.

However, later I realized that they were concerned about my well-being. This argument made me understand the importance of communication and respect.
