In January 1925, doctors realized that a potentially deadly epidemic (流行病) was to sweep through Nome’s young people. The only medicine that could stop the outbreak was in Anchorage, nearly a thousand miles away. But the only aircraft that could quickly deliver the medicine had been taken apart for the winter. In desperation, officials turned to a much lower-tech solution: moving the medicine by sled dogs.
Soon, a musher, one who drove a dogsled, set out from Anchorage on the first leg of a remarkable dogsled relay aimed at delivering the needed serum (血清) to Nome. More than 20 mushers took part, battling temperatures that rarely rose above 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit and winds that sometimes blew strong enough to knock over sleds and dogs. Reporters brought news of the race to a world suddenly transfixed (使呆住) by the drama in the far north.
Incredibly, just six days later, on February 2, 1925, Gunner Kaassen drove his heroic dog team into the streets of Nome. In the lead of his team was a husky named Balto, whose furry face soon became known around the world. A year later, in honor of the great journey, admirers built a statue of Balto in New York City’s Central Park. After Balto died in 1933, his body was preserved and displayed at Cleveland’s Natural History Museum.
Long after his death, Balto’s popularity lives on. Today, some Alaskan schoolchildren are campaigning to bring Balto back to his home state. The students want his body moved to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Museum in Wasilla. But Cleveland officials aren’t ready to give Balto back, noting he spent more than half his life in their city. There are plans in the works, however, for Balto to return to Alaska as part of a temporary exhibit at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art — a testament to the strength of Balto’s memory and a fitting memorial to his courageous spirit.
4. What can we know about the dogsled relay from the text?
A. It had to be cancelled halfway. B. It was intended to deliver the medicine.
C. It was aided by an aircraft. D. It formally started in Wasilla.
5. What was the biggest challenge during the race?
A. Extreme weather. B. Wild animals.
C. Lack of food. D. Road conditions.
6. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The desire of Alaskan schoolchildren. B. Balto’s entry into the Anchorage Museum.
C. The influence of the dogsled race. D. Balto’s popularity with the people.
7. What does the underlined word “testament” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Match. B. Bond. C. Proof. D. Addition.

Traditional methods used by literary scholars to determine authorship often rely on subjective factors such as handwriting analysis or personal knowledge about an author’s life, which can lead to inaccuracies and mistakes.
However, AI algorithms (算法) can analyze large amounts of text data to identify patterns and features unique to each author’s writing style. One example of this is the use of n-grams, which are series of words that appear together in a text. By analyzing the frequency and distribution of specific n-grams in a text, AI algorithms can identify an author’s characteristic writing style with a high degree of accuracy.
Stylometric analysis can also be used to detect illegal literary copying or misattributions (考证错误). By comparing the linguistic patterns and stylistic features of a disputed (有争议的) text to known works by various authors, AI algorithms can determine whether the disputed text is more likely to have been written by one author or another, or whether it may be a new discovery altogether.
Stylistic features obtained through AI-generated n-grams and other techniques can be used not only to determine authorship but also for critical purposes. It is possible not only to test theories about the emergence or change of particular styles over time but also to provide new insights into broader trends in the development of literature. For instance, researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela used stylometric analysis to prove that two previously unknown 16th-century Spanish novels were actually written by Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote. It’s a discovery that would have taken years using traditional literary analysis methods.
While some critics argue that AI-led stylometric analyses undermine the human role in literary analysis and interpretation, supporters point out that such analyses expand our understanding of literature by providing objective evidence for subjective opinions.
According to a 2020 report published in Nature Communications, applying AI techniques in literary analysis has led to the identification of previously unknown works by famous authors like William Shakespeare with a success rate of over 75%.
8. What is the focus of the “n-grams” method in research work?
A. The author’s life experience. B. The organization of sentences.
C. The author’s handwriting style. D. The occurence of certain words.
9. What is a precondition for using stylometric analysis?
A. The published works of various authors. B. The newly-discovered works of the authors.
C. A large collection of disputed works. D. All the works of contemporary authors.
10. How does the author make a point in paragraph 4?
A. By making a comparison. B. By referring to specific data.
C. By offering an example. D. By introducing a theory.
11. What is the last paragraph used to demonstrate?
A. The great progress in AI technology. B. The accuracy of AI algorithms.
C. The status of Shakespeare in literature. D. The wide employment of AI techniques.

Penguins (企鹅) are known for living on Antarctic ice, or marching across windswept areas of the frozen continent. But there are at least 18 species of penguins populating the Southern Hemisphere (半球) — and many don’t fit that cold weather.
There are actually only two species of penguins that really love ice, says Grant Ballard, chief science officer of Point Blue Conservation Science in Petaluma, Calif. Other species, like the Galapagos penguin, rest on dark volcanic rock and can tolerate blasting hot air temperatures of 100 degrees. “You know, I’m sure they don’t like that very much,” he says. “It’s amazing to me that penguins can adapt to the wide range of temperatures.”
New research has shed light on what gave rise to the incredible diversity of today’s penguins. Scientists say they’ve pieced together genetic (基因的) clues to reconstruct the 22-million-year-old evolutionary history of the seabirds. “We’ve been able to resolve several long-standing questions about penguin evolution,” says Rauri Bowie, a professor from the University of California. “In particular, where penguins originated.”
There’s long been a debate about that. Did they originate in Antarctica — where they’re numerous today — or closer to Australia and New Zealand? After analyzing the genomes of 18 species of modern-day penguins, Bowie says his team’s results suggest the common ancestor of penguins indeed first appeared off the coast of Australia and New Zealand, and nearby South Pacific islands, some 22 million years ago.
That doesn’t explain their spread around throughout the world’s southern oceans, of course. For that, the scientists say penguins took a ride on a current, circling the bottom of the world. “Penguins used this clockwise current to occupy the Antarctica region,” says Bowie.
Then, about 11 million years ago, that current sped up, and the researchers say penguins used it to transport themselves throughout the Southern Hemisphere to places like Africa and South America, where they still are found today. Along the way, penguins picked up genetic adaptations to help them survive in new climates. For example, Bowie says they identified changes in the way some penguins are able to use oxygen more efficiently, which may enable certain species to dive deep.
12. What does Grant Ballard think remarkable about the penguins?
A. They can live in a wide range of temperatures.
B. They can survive in extremely cold weather.
C. They have adapted well to dry climates.
D. They avoid resting on volcanic rocks.
13. The researchers based their new findings about penguins mainly on penguins’ ______.
A. body structure B. modern-day diets
C. genetic information D. original habitats
14. Why can penguins now occupy Africa and South America?
A. They moved there by land. B. They swam across the oceans.
C. They flew across the continents. D. They followed an ocean current.
15. Which is a genetic adaptation of penguins according to Bowie?
A. They can breathe underwater. B. They can dive deep into water.
C. They are experts in hunting. D. They hatch eggs on thick ice.

Everyone has an interesting camping experience to write about. For me, it was last year in October, when my family and I took our first camping trip to the Lake Houston Wilderness Park and slept underneath the stars. As we walked through the beautiful park, the colors of the sun shined brightly onto the pile of leaves. The gentle wind of the forest welcomed us with the sound of crackling dried leaves, which gave me good feelings everyone got at the beginning of autumn.
My family were all together, which was the most important part of the trip for me. It was difficult for us to plan an activity like this one, where we could be all together at the same time and place. We had finished setting up the tent when it suddenly started raining. Luckily, we had put up the tent on a high flat surface where water could not come into our tent. Even with the rain, I had never been happier. The quiet forest and big trees surrounded the tent. While we were all enjoying the sound of the raindrops dripping on our tent, Mom, who liked adventures, prepared some snacks and drinks for us while we were playing games, and chatting about our daily life stories. My little sister danced unconsciously. I noticed how unique it was camping under the sound of the rain; we were gathered around in the middle of nature and it was a nice feeling.
As the rain continued to pour, we were hiding in our comfortable tent, feeling safe and delighted. The soft sound of raindrops against the fabric was almost hypnotic (催眠的), blending with the laughter inside. My dad, who rarely got time off from work, was more relaxed than I had seen him in ages. He and my brother shared jokes, while my mom’s snacks kept our spirits high. There was something about being together in that moment, away from the usual distractions.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As the rain became lighter, my sister suggested we step outside.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
We the students of Class Two, Senior Three beg most respectfully to state that we want to set up an English debating club in our school. We think that it will help us enrich our knowledge as well as expand our vision greatly. More importantly, it will also enhance our English speaking ability and help us become a skilled generation of the country for future. We, therefore, hope that you would be kind enough to permit us to set up an English debating club in our school.
Would you please reply to me at your earliest convenience?
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
As the rain became lighter, my sister suggested we step outside. At first, we hesitated — who wanted to get wet and muddy? But Mom, ever the adventurer, convinced us to brave the experience. Walking out of the tent, we were immediately greeted by the sweet smell of wet soil and the glitter of raindrops on the leaves. The forest felt alive, almost magical, as if it were sharing a secret only the rain could reveal. Along the way, we collected stones and twigs, playing happily despite the rain.
As night fell, we returned to the campsite. Around the campfire, Dad surprised us with a heartfelt toast, “Here’s to our family — through storms and sunshine, we’re strongest together.” That night, under a starry sky, I realized the rain wasn’t an obstacle but a gift. How happy I felt on that day! The interesting and special camping experience taught us to value the simple joys and each other’s company — lessons I’ll carry forever in my life.
