We often hear of people who make long journeys to different parts of the world, with some even making it all the way to space. However, the biggest journey one can make is within oneself. The self-discovery journey helps you feel more confident and at peace with yourself. Then, how do you start your journey of self-discovery? 1
You may start with finding out what you like most about yourself. It could be about how creative you are about your ability to care about others or about your skills in playing an instrument or a sport. This will help you know better about your personal values or abilities.
Knowing what makes you excited is also helpful. What makes your eyes light up? 2 It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.
It is always more comfortable to be on familiar (熟悉的) ground. However, in order to discover yourself you will need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. 3 This may make you feel nervous, but it will give you a chance to learn more about how you feel and think when challenged.
What is your true purpose in life? 4 As you go about your daily activities, ask yourself these questions to learn about your true self. Such questioning will help you to think deeply and realize what kind of person you want to be.
5 As you go through life, the experiences can change you, and this helps you grow. As Ariana Huffington said, “The journey towards self-discovery is life’s greatest adventure.”
A.It’s never too late to learn.
B.Who or what do you want to be?
C.As the saying goes, “Life is short.”
D.The following may be of some help to you.
E.The self-discovery journey is a lifelong journey.
F.For example, you have to give a speech in public.
G.This will tell you where your true joy comes from.

We all love spending time by the sea. Some lucky ones might live on the coast and enjoy the benefits (益处) all around the year. 1 Most of us would say we feel healthier by the ocean. In the past, doctors would actually suggest spending time by the sea to their patients. And research has shown that people who live on the coast are more likely to believe their health is good compared to those living in a city. So how do we benefit, exactly?
Well, to start with, it’s great for our mental (心理) health. Scientists have discovered that we have something called a blue mind. They have shown that watching, listening to the waves (海浪) or being in the ocean helps our brains slow down. 2 This is why people who have trouble sleeping are often told to listen to recordings of the sound of waves hitting the beach to help them relax at bedtime.
3 We go out a lot more when we’re on holiday by the sea. We often become more active on holidays and people who live on the coast are usually more active too. 4 Walking on sand requires more effort than on the pavement. And the sea air is good for people with breathing problems too. There is less pollution in the air near the ocean and in autumn and winter the air is fresher. This is healthier than the dry air in homes with central heating. It has even been found that the chemicals in sea water may help us have healthy skin.
5 We look forward so much to having our next one!
A.Breathing the air in the city makes you more active.
B.Others usually have to wait for the next vacation.
C.Being by the sea is also good for our physical health.
D.Kids especially like to have fun by the sea in summer.
E.Naturally we often feel so great at the end of a seaside holiday.
F.The sound of them can help us relax and feel free from stress.
G.And if you take your walks on the beach, this is a lot better.
(2022·山东济南·中考真题)Leading young people to take up physical exercise is really important. 1 But a report recently shows that only half of girls who were questioned by researchers enjoy doing sports. 2 What are the reasons? Because of their dislike of the clothes they are asked to wear and the lack(缺乏)of facilities(设备)to do their hair afterwards. As more girls than boys fail to take part in physical activities, this is seen as a problem that needs dealing with.
Many of the girls questioned said they disliked wearing the skirts that are often part of PE clothes and that the clothes should be more comfortable to wear. The girls wanted to have the chance to say what the PE clothes should look like. They suggested clothing should cover more of their bodies, such as leggings and high-necked shirts. 3
Another key problem the girls reported was not having the facilities available to do their hair after they had taken part in exercise. The girls being interviewed wanted private space where they could get changed. They felt schools should supply hairdryers so that they could style their hair. 4 They could use this time to do their hair and make sure they looked the same as they did before the class.
The researchers argue that since girls worry a great deal about how they look during their teenage years, it is important that schools take these problems seriously. 5 Some teachers feel sports should keep youngers’ minds off how they look. It should help them see the value of keeping physically fit, enjoying team spirit and achieving their success and not worrying about what their hair looks like.
A.Girls had the following problems with PE classes.
B.Even a quarter of them actually avoid taking part.
C.However, not everyone agrees with the suggestions.
D.They also required 15 minutes at the end of the PE class.
E.Surprisingly, most girls don’t agree with this suggestion.
F.PE classes are one way of getting young people to do this.
G.They also thought the materials used were not good enough.
(2021·山东济南·中考真题)Listen. What’s that in the background? Is it rock, country or classical music? 1
“Music makes both the left and right brain more active, and this can maximize(使最大化)learning and improve our memory,” says Dr. Masha Godkin, a professor at Northcentral University.
According to Godkin, it’s good to listen to classical music while you are studying. 2 You can also listen to meditation(冥想)music, which can relieve stress and relax your mind.
It is helpful to create a playlist of the best study music. Everyone’s taste in music is different, but when it comes to creating the best study music playlist, here are some tips to consider:
● Go Classical
You may not want to go to a concert of classical music, but the sounds of the classical music seem to increase mood and productivity(效率). 3
● Consider Tempo
It seems that music with 60-70 beats a minute like Beethoven’s Fur Elise can help students study longer and memorize more information.
● Nature Sounds
4 They make great background noise. You can even create your own mix with websites like Noisli.
● Electronic Music
Electronic music is a great choice for those who don’t like classical. Any music with little to no lyrics is best.
● Sound Control
The volume of your study music is important. Don’t drown out(淹没)your own thoughts. Remember, it’s supposed to be in the background.
5 Please write to us and let us know what music helps you get through school!
A.This makes it great for studying.
B.What do you think of country music?
C.One reason is that classical music has no lyrics.
D.The sounds of birds, wind and rain are relaxing.
E.We would love to know what’s on your study playlist.
F.Did you know that some kinds of music can help you focus?
G.However, you are not expected to listen to music in the classroom.
(2020·山东济南·中考真题)When I was in middle school, I took a word processing class at my town's public library.
When my mother picked me up, she asked me how it was. 1
Ethel was an old lady, who shared her first name with my grandmother. She was taking the class to learn the skills she needed to communicate with her friends and family using the computer. During the period, we enjoyed each other's company(陪伴). 2 And she, I imagine, felt happy that a young person took an interest in what it was like for her to be learning something new.
3 Now that I'm older, I get to grow in both directions, from starting a conversation with an older person I'm sitting near on a bus, to asking my young neighbor about her after-school job.
4 Younger people in the relationship can learn from the view and experience of the older people, who have often “been there, done that”. And they might also get a more positive(积极的) idea about getting old by spending time with older people who are living their lives with energy and optimism.
Intergenerational(隔代的) friendships are also helpful to older people in some way. Feelings of loneliness or sadness are common among older people. 5 Older people might enjoy telling stories that fascinate younger people. They might also get the opportunity to learn and use new skills in technology and communication.
A.I felt grown-up and valued by this old lady.
B.These feelings will be very harmful to them.
C.But making young friends can make a difference.
D.The two of us had nothing to share with each other.
E.“I’ve made a friend and her name is Ethel,” I told her excitedly.
F.There're many advantages of having intergenerational friendships.
G.After that, I began making friends with people of different ages.

Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or another, you’ll have to stand up and say, “Problems, I don’t want you in my life.” Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born. Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children—the list goes on. 1
But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.
Talking really helps. What most of us think is that our problems can be understood only by ourselves and that no talking is going to help. But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative (消极的) energies that have been gathering within you. 2
Write down your problems. Having a personal diary can also be of great help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension (焦虑) from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. 3
Don’t lose faith or hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith or hope. 4 With faith, hope and confidence, you can rebuild everything that you lose.
5 No matter what problem you get in life, there are another one million people whose problems are bigger than yours. Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I? Your problems might just seem bigger and worse, but in reality they can be solved.
Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out.
A.As a matter of fact, your problems absolutely aren’t the worst.
B.Speaking out the problem helps you to come out of the problem.
C.When we have a problem in our daily lives, how do we try and solve it?
D.Even if you lose all you have, you are still supposed to have confidence.
E.Apart from these, the inner tension within ourselves works a lot, too.
F.By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life.
G.We can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.

Every country has its typical animals. Some animals can even stand for (代表) the country. 1 Maybe you would say the panda because it is Chinese national treasure. But there is another animal that can really stand for China and even Chinese culture — the dragon. Although nobody knows if there is a dragon in the world, it has been regarded as the symbol of China for thousands of years. 2
The dragon is the symbol of emperor in ancient times, and the dragon is great, because it gets the respect of all the Chinese people. In China, the dragon is an amazing animal. Even now we call ourselves descendants of the dragon, and we are proud of it. 3 It is a terrible animal like a huge snake, and it’s not positive and beautiful.
4 Dogs are humans’ good friends. But there are many bad common sayings about dogs in China, for example, “A dog looks down on other people”. But in western countries, people praise the bravery and loyalty of dogs.
Both Chinese and western people should pay attention to this cultural difference. 5 Having a full understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western culture is important for cultural exchange.

1 During the winter holiday, some recipes (食谱) about how to make snow ice cream and other desserts go viral.
As we know, no one will scoop up snow from the side of the road, because it is full of salt, muck (淤泥), and other unpleasantness. 2
On the one side, snow isn’t all that clean, even the newly fallen snow in unpolluted areas, according to meteorologist Mary Scarzello Fairbanks. At first, an ice crystal forms when water droplets (水珠) freeze around some dust or debris (碎片) in the air. Then it continues to collect water vapor (蒸汽) during the filling process. 3
When snow falls, it will also collect some bacteria hanging in the air. If it’s windy, snow could even mix with dust and gasoline exhaust (废气). This all means that your snow ice cream could have some pretty disgusting “toppings”.
4 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns against snow snacking for anyone in trouble, such as hikers, because it can lower body temperature. In case of water shortage (短缺), it is a safe way to collect clean snow and boil it to kill bacteria before drinking.
As long as you don’t eat too much snow, any dirty things in the snow are not enough to cause illness. 5
A.We do not recommend eating snowy, but a small bite will probably be fine.
B.In the end, it forms a snowflake.
C.So there is a question: Is any snow actually safe to eat?
D.On the other side, snow can be eaten in emergency situations.
E.There is not many reports about illnesses caused by eating snow.
F.It always snows a few times in winter.
G.We can’t eat any snow.

You have your own unique DNA, but it repeats patterns from your parents’ DNA.From your DNA, scientists can identify not only you, but also people who are related to you. Your parents and grandparents are related to you, and you have their DNA.When you have a grandson or granddaughter, he or she will have your DNA.Your DNA comes from your parents.
Your DNA has billions of instructions that explain why you are the way you are. 5

Dear readers,
Last week, I received many letters from young readers. 1 Here are some tips.
Create a successful checklist
To make sure you don’t forget anything important, create a list of things that you’d like to include in your writing. 2
Go with the flow (流), then go back
When you have lots of ideas to write down, you can just let them flow quickly onto the paper. 3 This is when you can decide which bits need to be cut out, added, corrected, changed or improved. You can mark your bright ideas on the page with a colored pen.
Get another opinion
When we read something written by ourselves, it’s hard to find something wrong or parts that don’t make sense. A great way to reflect on your written work is to get a friend or an adult to read it. 4 You can share your list with them so that they understand what you are trying to achieve.
Redraft and proofread
Don’t stop yourself from rewriting again if you think you need to, but remember to be kind to yourself. Then you can proofread it by yourself. 5 Only in this way can you make further progress and write good works.
Yours,
Holly King
A.Having a list can help you achieve your work better.
B.Then you can get different thoughts about your work.
C.Then you can read over your work carefully and review it.
D.This means reading your work carefully to look for mistakes.
E.This can make your writing more imaginative and interesting.
F.In the letter, they asked me how to write and become an excellent writer.
G.A little surprise will make your characters shine and more like the rest of us.
(2024·山东济南·二模)There are 202 kinds of chameleon (变色龙) in the world that scientists know about. 42% of these different kinds of chameleons live in Madagascar.
1 Scientists used to think these animals do that to hide from danger. But now they know the main reason is to communicate with each other. Chameleons can change colors to draw other chameleons’ attention or to warn them to go away. They can use their colors to show that they are angry or scared sometimes. 2 It turns out that they stay safe by moving backward and forward in a strange way. By moving that way, the chameleon looks less like a moving animal. 3
A chameleon’s tongue is very long and moves very fast. To catch food, a chameleon hides in the trees until an insect walks by. 4 A chameleon can catch insects as far away as two times its body length. The end of its tongue is very sticky. When a chameleon catches an insect, the tongue shoots forward at a great speed. And the insect is caught in a flash.
Chameleons are amazing animals. But like many other animals, they’re in trouble. 5 This is because the forests and other areas where they live are disappearing or are being changed by people. And when the area is changed too much, it becomes difficult for chameleons to live there. Scientists are working to help the endangered chameleons by learning as much as they can about these colorful animals.
A.Then it shoots out its tongue to catch the insect all of a sudden.
B.Are chameleons able to change colors from birth?
C.So if colors are not for hiding from danger, how do chameleons stay safe?
D.There’s usually enough time for the insect to run away.
E.Many kinds of chameleons are endangered at present.
F.Chameleons are famous for their ability to change colors.
G.Instead, that makes it look more like a leaf swinging in the wind.

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people will never achieve anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated(打败) once a few changes have been made in your mind.
1 Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation(动力) once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting(调节) your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach(主动方式), viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 2
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑) that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment(娱乐后动), but watching too much TV often leads to laziness. 3 Complete a few tasks and reward(奖励) yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not being dealt with immediately. 4 Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may finally follow your example and practice their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.
5 Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
A.To fight family laziness, set an example.
B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.
C.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.
D.Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.
E.With hard work, you will be able to achieve your goal.
F.Laziness sets in when you no longer control your own life.
G.Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for the children.

Life is full of regrets. It seems to be a fact of life: the job you didn’t take, the choice of the wrong school, the money you didn’t save, and on and on and on. 1 As we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices, so what can we do to avoid future regrets?
Make better plans. If you start to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. 2 You’ll also know what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. If changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
3 You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed and active. You also need to be kind. “Thank you” can bring a smile to someone’s face. Learn to say “sorry” and don’t be angry with others.
Make friends carefully. A friend may make your life and he or she can break your life as well. 4 Good friends will always give you good ideas. When you get into trouble, ask others for help. That little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure. Everybody fails. Even the greatest person failed. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. 5

● Nature Sounds
4 They make great background noise. You can even create your own mix with websites like Noisli.
● Electronic Music
Electronic music is a great choice for those who don’t like classical. Any music with little to no lyrics is best.

5 No matter what problem you get in life, there are another one million people whose problems are bigger than yours. Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I? Your problems might just seem bigger and worse, but in reality they can be solved.

Yours,
Holly King
