Are you troubled by housework, such as cleaning tables or tidying your room? Do you need a helping hand? Recently, the robot Mobile Aloha made by scientists at Standford University in the US became popular online. In the video posted, we can see the robot preparing dishes on its own. It’s also good at watering plants, petting cats, cleaning the floor and washing clothes.
Sounds good! Well, another video posted by researchers may disappoint some people. Mobile Aloha isn’t good at doing housework on its own. Instead, it learns from human actions before doing each kind of housework. When the situation changes, it can’t work well without a human “teaching” it. So it may break dishes, bump into things and even burn a pot.
The robot can successfully move chairs 80 percent of the time, said the team after they did more research on it. For cooking dishes, it’s only 40 percent. In short, it’s far from perfect.
In fact, AI robots are good at tasks such as math and playing chess, but they face challenges when it comes to simpler actions like cleaning. And it’s the same for Mobile Aloha. For example, if its body doesn’t move correctly—even just with a small deviation, its arm may move too far to pick up a glass.
“Robots are not ready to take over the world,” the team posted online.

There was magic in the secret garden in spring. First everything turned green. Then the green changed to colors—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. The roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with pleasant smell.
Colin was sick and thought that he would die soon. But he watched all the changes as they happened in spring. Dickon Colin’s friend, pushed Colin on wheelchair to the garden every morning and Colin spent the day there. Sometimes he sat on the grass watching the insects. He once watched a mouse digging a hole.
One morning Dickon pushed Colin to the secret garden as usual. Mary, Colin’s cousin, and Ben Weatherstaff, the gardener, were there too. Colin said: “I want to tell you something very important.”
“I believe that there is magic in everything,” continued Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He charms (迷住) animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. Please sing ‘Magic is in me!’ with me.”
“Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.” They started singing.
Then Colin tried to walk on his own. His first few step was shaky (摇晃的) and he even fell to the ground. But as he took further steps forward, he soon got used to it and was able to walk steadily. Although he was slow, he did not fall again.

The Chinese character fu is a necessity in Spring Festival celebrations. It expresses people’s best wishes for the coming new year. The tradition of pasting (贴) the character fu on walls and family doors has been around for a long time. It is recorded that people began practicing this tradition as early as the Song Dynasty.
The character fu can be pasted either normally or upside down, because in Chinese, the “reversed fu” and “fu arrives” sound similar to each other, both being pronounced as “fu dao le”.
There is a story about the origin of pasting the “reversed fu”. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, once used the character fu as a secret signal to kill a family for insulting (侮辱) his wife, Empress Ma, To avoid the disaster, the kind-hearted Empress Ma ordered every family in the capital to paste the character fu in front of their doors before the sun rose the next day. Everyone followed her order, but one family pasted the character upside down, because they couldn’t read or write.
The next day, when the emperor ordered his soldiers to check, they found the character fu everywhere, including the upside-down one. The emperor was very angry and immediately ordered his palace guards to kill the family who had pasted the character differently.
Realizing the situation was not good. Empress Ma said to the emperor, “That family knew that you were coming to visit them today so they pasted the character upside down on purpose. Doesn’t it have the same meaning as ‘fu arrives’?” After hearing this, the emperor immediately set the family free. From then on, people began to paste the character fu upside down for the purpose of hoping for luck and honoring Empress Ma.
46. Why is the character “fu” pasted upside down during Spring Festival?
A. To make it easier for people to read.
B. To match the pronunciation of “good luck arrives.”
C. To follow Empress Ma’s direct order strictly.
D. To honor the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty.
47. What did Empress Ma do to save the family who pasted “fu” upside down?
A. She secretly warned them to escape.
B. She punished the emperor for his anger.
C. She ordered soldiers to remove the character.
D. She explained the meaning of “reversed fu” to the emperor.
48. What can be inferred about the family that pasted “fu” incorrectly?
A They were unable to read or write.
B. They disliked Empress Ma’s kindness.
C. They aimed to create a new tradition.
D. They wanted to challenge the emperor’s authority.
49. What do you think of Empress Ma?
A. Silly and slow. B. Brave and strict. C. Selfish and cruel. D. Wise and warm-hearted.
50. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To show respect to ancient Chinese emperors Zhu Yuanzhang.
B To explain the cultural story behind a Spring Festival tradition.
