Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·内蒙古乌兰察布·期末)Eric, a French exchange student, went to a middle school in Shanghai to learn about Chinese culture and make new friends.
One cool autumn morning, Eric met his new roommate, Wei Ning, a Chinese student. Excited to make a good first impression (印象), Eric held out his arms to give Wei a warm hug, a common greeting back in France. However, Wei walked back, looking surprised and uncomfortable. Eric didn’t know the cultural difference and felt quite confused (困惑的). Luckily, Eric’s classmate, Fu Xing, saw everything that happened. He told Eric that in China, hugs are usually for good friends or family.
Later that day, in the lunchroom, Eric saw his teacher, Miss Gao, far away and he naturally waved his hand up and down with his palm (手掌) facing up, as he did at home. But Miss Gao looked surprised and then just smiled. When Eric felt confused again, Miss Gao walked towards him. She then told Eric that in China, waving with one’s palm facing up is a way to call someone of lower social standing and that to greet someone politely, a handshake or a polite bow is much better.
To make up for his mistakes, Eric planned a small party in his room. He invited Wei Ning, Fu Xing, Miss Gao and many other classmates. They talked, laughed, and enjoyed delicious food while learning about each other’s customs. Many people liked Eric’s kind act and became good friends with him, including Wei Ning and Miss Gao.

I must admit that at first America was a big culture shook for me. Many things were strange to me: the language, the food and even the school.
I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents, Mr and Mrs Hurst, were very kind. They organized a lot of activities for me in my spare time so that I wouldn’t miss home or feel lonely.

As soon as I got there, I called her and said, ‘Mom, guess where I am. I’m at the Shaolin Temple!’,” says Max Yollando, a young man from Cote d’Ivoire, a country in West Africa, sharing his deep love for Chinese culture.
When Yollando was a university student, he went to the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) in his country to study Chinese. In late 2016, he had the chance to visit the temple in Henan Province on a three-month exchange. This experience brought him closer to traditional Chinese culture.
After returning to Cote d’Ivoire, Yollando continued to practice Chinese and study traditional Chinese culture. In July 2017, he returned to the Shaolin Temple again and stayed there for six years. His years at the temple reading, practicing kung fu, and meditation (打坐) greatly changed him, and allowed him to better understand traditional Chinese culture.

The first of its kind in Africa, the center is home to 30 orphans (孤儿), who are taught Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture, including kung fu, as part of the course.
For Yollando, the purpose of studying Chinese culture is to introduce Chinese values to people in his country. “In China, people make an effort to work better, and they are very respectful and thankful to their family and country. That’s what I love the most about the culture. When I make connections between Chinese and African culture, it seems to me that they have a lot in common,” he says.

“A friend brought me to an orphanage (孤儿院) to help me overcome culture shock,” she said. “He knew that I loved volunteering and language teaching, so he told me the orphanage would be a great place to ‘develop a feeling of home’ in a different culture and improve my language skills.”

Passage 10
(2024·江苏苏州·二模)My name is Brad Li. I’m here today to tell you about my experience as an exchange student in the United Stated States last year.
However, to a certain degree, life in the US was hard to get used to. My main problem was with the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke so fast. Though I soon managed to get used to it, I still had problems because they used a lot of idioms. For example, they often say they are “under the weather” when they are ill.
Their everyday English is very different from what we learn in China.
Another difference was the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really missed the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home.
School was a big shoock too. They do not require students to wear uniforms, so students can wear almost whatever they like. Some students have strange hairstyles as well. Some students even have pink or purple hair!
Anyway, I have many great memories of that year, especially playing in the snow in winter, and playing baseball. At Halloween, I went to a party dressed as Harry Potter. At Thanksgiving, we had a big dinner with a huge turkey.

This festival is like a window that shows the good things about Chinese civilization. It has the values of peace and being in harmony. It goes to the neighborhood, the whole country, and even to other countries. That’s why, every Spring Festival, millions of people in China go back to their hometowns, making it the world’s largest human migration.
Spring Festival has a lot of intangible cultural traditions. Every part of it has a long history and deep meaning. It’s a time full of old stories and special customs. These customs all come from the stories that people told for a long time.
For example, setting off fireworks and putting up red things on houses and shops come from an old story about an animal called “nian”. The Chinese word for “year” is also “nian”. Long ago, people thought this nian would come and hurt people and animals at the end of the year. But they found a way to scare it away. The story says nian was very afraid of loud noises and the color red. So, these customs started and we still do them today.
Rao Quan, who is the vice-minister of culture and tourism and led the Chinese team at the UNESCO meeting, was very happy and said thank you for this honor. He said that having Spring Festival on the UNESCO list would help to spread the values of peace and harmony that everyone can understand. It would also show how important intangible cultural heritage is for our future growth. It’s like a very precious thing that we should all love and protect.
