But it turns out that working in a job below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-paying job more appropriate to your qualifications. Sociologist David Pedulla at the University of Texas conducted a study to examine how jobs below a person’s skill level affect future employability. He tailored 2,420 applications and submitted them to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the U.S. He varied the applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous year. Then he used computer models to analyze and compare the results. The results show that applicants who were positioned as working below their skill level, regardless of gender had the lowest chances of getting called for a job interview. These results should serve as a warning to anyone considering taking a job below their skill level. While it might pay the bills in the short term, it can significantly hammer one’s ability to return to the relevant skill level and pay grade at a later date. Why might this be the case? Pedulla conducted a follow-up study with 903 employers. He asked them about their ideas of applicants with each kind of employment history, and how likely they would be to recommend each kind of candidate to an interview. The results show that employers believe that men who are employed in positions below their skill level are less committed and less competent than men in other employment situations. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be less committed. The results of studies suggest that work below skill level signals to employers men’s incompetence and a lack of commitment. This is a disturbing reminder that the sword of gender bias (偏见) does in fact cut both ways. 21. Why do many people choose jobs below their skill level? A. They fear bearing duties. B. They face a tough economy. C. They lack-self-confidence. D. They pursue better-paying jobs. 22. How do the researchers carry out the first study? A. By making comparisons. B. By doing surveys. C. By conducting interviews. D. By researching examples. 23. What is the employers’ idea according to the follow-up study? A. Men are more likely to get promoted. B. Women are more devoted and capable. C. Women behave better in jobs below skill level. D. Men show talents in work of the relevant level. B How we learn accents before we learn words “No!” That’s the only word we hear in the latest cute baby video to go viral. But it’s not the words that baby Orla says that has made this video so popular. It’s the fact that she clearly imitates (模仿) the distinctive Scouse accent (口音) from Liverpool. This now-famous baby may only have been born in 2022, but the different accents of babbling (咿哑声) babies have been studied for many years. A study from 2009 found that French babies tend to cry with a rising intonation, while German babies’ cries often have a falling intonation. Other studies have shown American and French babies reflecting syllables (音节) from English and French respectively, and that babies with parents who speak a tonal (声调的) language, like Mandarin, had a greater range of tones in their crying. So why does this happen? As children develop, they practise making the sounds of the language that they hear around them. It’s natural that they pick up the sounds around them. In fact, babies start to learn language from their mother from three months before birth. However, it’s not just the language of immediate family and caregivers that has an impact. Professor Caroline Floccia highlights studies suggesting that children are more likely to learn the accent of their environment than that of a parent who has an accent that is foreign to that location. Why is this important to know? Well, what it shows us is that babies are learning language through practice, and that the more time that parents spend interacting with their children, the greater opportunity for this. While babbling babies may not be able to say many words, studies estimate that they can understand many times the number of words than those that they can actually say. Giving babies exposure to a greater number of words allows them to better build their vocabulary. 24. What makes the video of baby Orla so popular? A. Her cute appearance. B. Her ability to say “No”. C. Her clear pronunciation. D. Her Scouse accent imitation. 25. What does the underlined word “respectively” mean in paragraph 2? A. Individually. B. Apparently. C. Abnormally. D. Identically. 26. What does Professor Caroline Floccia stress? A. Babysitters have no effect on children’s accent. B. Children will always learn the accent of their parents. C. Environment has more impacts on babies’ language learning. D. Children are more likely to learn the accent of the foreigners. 27. What does the passage imply about babies’ language learning abilities? A. Babies can only understand a limited number of words. B. More interactions can develop babies’ language learning. C Babies’ babbling is not an indication of their language learning. D. Babies’ language learning is not affected by parental interaction. C I came across the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less from a library app and I can say that after reading it did not disappoint. The book fits into the personal development category. It talks about how important it is to focus on absolutely important things and remove the unnecessary distractions. The common problem, Greg McKeown says, is spotting the important things. Essentialism means continuously defining where we can create the most value, then finding ways to execute these tasks most effortlessly. In Essentialism, McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the pursuit of less. More importantly, by applying a more selective standard for what is essential, the pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can channel our time, energy and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward the goals and activities that matter. McKeown further explores the difference between an essentialist and a non-essentialist. He gives fantastic and relatable examples from his life as well as from others to illustrate how functioning as a non-essentialist is harmful for both you and those around you. He says the primary difference in both of them is the one who says yes to everything and the other (the essentialist) says yes only to the things that matter. He also tells that a non-essentialist will commit to everything and put his personal priorities (优先事项) on the side while that is opposite in case of the essentialist. Whether it is in work-life or personal life, a non-essentialist will try to do more by quick-fix solutions but an essentialist will focus on removing barriers and nothing else. He also gives us examples of famous people like Mahatma Gandhi who followed essentialism. Finally, the book tells us how to set out the important things in our life — like a routine of 8 hours of sleep, daily journal or playing or relaxing every day to let our minds rest. In today’s fast-paced life, McKeown says, restfulness is a precious escape from the noisy world. 28. What does the underlined word “execute” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Carry out. B. Switch between. C. Watch out for. D. Get away from. 29. What is mainly stressed in paragraph 3? A. The significance of essentialism. B. The inspiration for the book. C. Achievements of essentialists. D. Strategies for pursuing less. 30. Which of the following is a feature of essentialists? A. Commitment to daily work. B. High efficiency in work. C. Positive influence by celebrities. D. Concentration on priorities. 31. What does McKeown suggest people do? A. Avoid tiring work if possible. B. Find meaning in everyday life. C. Take a break when necessary. D. Remain restless and unmotivated. D A man with Parkinson’s(帕金森)disease has experienced a substantial improvement in his ability to walk after being fitted with a device that electrically stimulates his spinal cord(脊髓). The findings, although based on one person, suggest this could be used to treat movement disorders. Treatments for Parkinson’s disease include drugs that target parts of the brain which regulates movement, as well as deep-brain stimulation, which changes the electrical signals that cause symptoms. However, many people don’t respond to these treatments, particularly if their condition is advanced, says Courtine. He and his colleagues wanted to find out whether directly stimulating the spinal cord in a person with severe Parkinson’s disease could help. The team designed the device that specifically targets neurons(神经元)in the spine that are activated when legs walk, which showed promise in non-human primates with Parkinson’s-like symptoms. To test it in a person, the researchers recruited a 62-year-old man called Marc, who has experienced Parkinson’s symptoms for around 30 years. These included pace freezing-sudden and temporary inability to move. The researchers first had to map the neurons in Marc’s spine. This helped to guide the application of stimulators so they would only target his legs’ neurons. They then placed sensors on Marc’s legs and shoes to monitor the electrical activity of the neurons that activate the muscles in these limbs and his feet. When these sensors detected this electrical activity, they activated the stimulators. After three months’ training using the stimulators, Marc more or less stopped experiencing pace freezing. Marc says that passing through narrow paths or turning had previously caused pace freezing, which led to him falling five or six times a day. Marc has now been using the stimulator for two years and says he hardly falls any more, allowing him to walk several kilometres at a time. The stimulation is personalised to Marc. Nevertheless, the team thinks a similar technique could help many people. But there are at least five more years of development before the treatment will reach people outside a trial, says Courtine. 32. Why does Courtine’s team design the device? A. Conventional treatments help little. B. Patients suffer from deep-brain stimulation. C. The device is much cheaper. D. The medicine has side-effects. 33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The procedure of the treatment. B. The effects of the research. C. The function of stimulators. D. The prediction of researchers. 34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A. Marc is dissatisfied with the treatment. B. Marc recovers after three-month’s training. C. The device is specially adjusted for Marc. D. The device has been used widely. 35. What is the limitation of this research? A. Small sample. B. Low technology. C. High cost. D. Inconvenient operation. Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often ignored in our fast- paced society. ____36____ A well-cared and healthy mind leads to improved emotions, better relationships, and a more positive outlook on life. ____37____ When we are stressed or upset, it is our mind’s way of reacting to negative stimuli(刺激). A tall official was checking all the athletes. “Number Three. John Fisher.” John nodded while a ripple of goosebumps (一阵鸡皮疙瘩) shot up his backbone. He should be calm as he had trained pretty hard for the race. However, he had a headache and a sense of imbalance from his poor sleep the night before, Scenes of the last competition filled his head, when he had put in a good effort, doing what he thought was enough only to see another man beat him. The bitter taste of loss spread slowly in his mouth even now. Suddenly, John felt a “man” in black standing beside him, who looked quite familiar. He looked at John and sneered (讥笑), “Hey. You are not good enough. You’re going to fail like in the last competition!” How dare he say that? John angrily punched (拳打) him, who, however, disappeared into thin air. John remembered the early mornings when he was the first to arrive at the training ground, pushing himself through one more set of exercises each time. Determined not to let this negative voice affect him, he took a deep breath and looked ahead. “Now, everyone, follow me,” the official said and led the group into the arena (运动场). John looked over at the other competitors, each dressed in a similar uniform, well-trained and prepared. John knew he had a tough race ahead of him. The “man” appeared and sneered again “Good luck. You’re going to need it!” Ignoring the “man” and the competitors, John placed his fingers against the starting line and put his body in position. “What should I do first?” he wondered, All the strategies he had planned the night before were gone. He could feel the eye of the crowd on him and he wasn’t ready. Paragraph 1: Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高二英语开学检测英语试题 注意事项: 1. Why did the man fail to see the film last Sunday? A 18. C 19. B 20. M: Most of us know what it’s like to get presents from friends. Whether it’s for a birthday or other celebration, it’s hard to beat the excitement of opening a carefully wrapped box to find something unexpected and perfect for you. Now, imagine if you could get the same feeling when you go shopping for yourself. That’s the feeling that comes from mystery boxes. Mystery boxes can be traced back to Japan’s toys and lucky bags. They contain a range of different products, which are sold at a lower price. The key thing is that customers don’t know what’s in the box before they buy. The pleasant surprise is not the only attraction of mystery boxes. They also allow people to try things that they otherwise wouldn’t. Seasonal vegetable mystery boxes might lead people to learn to cook new meals. They can also possibly offer great savings. For suppliers, it allows them to sell unwanted stock for a profit. This can help reduce waste. There is an obvious downside to mystery boxes — when you buy them, you don’t know what you’ll get! It may be that the goods inside are not to your taste. Or maybe the goods have a much lower value than the price of the box. So, mystery boxes are a fun way of reducing waste and making shopping more exciting. However, sometimes they will make you disappointed. A Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in worsening employment markets. But it turns out that working in a job below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-paying job more appropriate to your qualifications. Sociologist David Pedulla at the University of Texas conducted a study to examine how jobs below a person’s skill level affect future employability. He tailored 2420 applications and submitted them to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the U.S. A Men are more likely to get promoted. B. Women are more devoted and capable. C. Women behave better in jobs below skill level. D. Men show talents in work of the relevant level. B 22. A 23. 根据文章第一段“Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in worsening employment markets.(在不断恶化的就业市场中,许多人经常发现自己在考虑低于自己技能水平的工作。)” 根据文章第二段“He tailored 2,420 applications and submitted them to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the U.S. He varied the applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous year. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be less committed.(结果表明,雇主认为,在低于他们技能水平的岗位上工作的男性比在其他就业情况下工作的男性更不敬业,更不称职。接受调查的人还认为,从事低于自己技能水平工作的女性不如其他女性能干,但并不认为她们不够投入。)”可推知,雇主的想法是女性在技能水平以下的工作中比男性表现更好。故选C。 B How we learn accents before we learn words “No!” That’s the only word we hear in the latest cute baby video to go viral. C. Babies’ babbling is not an indication of their language learning. D. Babies’ language learning is not affected by parental interaction. D 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段中“But it’s not the words that baby Orla says that has made this video so popular. It’s the fact that she clearly imitates(模仿) the distinctive Scouse accent (口音) from Liverpool.(但并不是婴儿奥拉说的话让这个视频如此受欢迎。事实是,她明显模仿了来自利物浦的独特的利物浦口音。)”可知,奥拉模仿利物浦口音让她的视频如此受欢迎。故选D项。 【25题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第二段中“A study from 2009 found that French babies tend to cry with a rising intonation, while German babies’ cries often have a falling intonation.( 2009年的一项研究发现,法国婴儿哭的时候往往是升调,而德国婴儿哭的时候往往是降调。)”以及划线单词句子中“…and that babies with parents who speak a tonal(声调的) language, like Mandarin, had a greater range of tones in their crying.(……而父母说普通话等声调语言的婴儿,哭声中的声调范围更大。)”可知,此处为美国和法国的婴儿分别反映英语和法语的音节,故可猜测划线单词respectively为“分别,独自地”意思,结合选项A项Individually“分别地,单独地”意思一致。故选A项。 根据第三段中“Professor Caroline Floccia highlights studies suggesting that children are more likely to learn the accent of their environment than that of a parent who has an accent that is foreign to that location.(卡洛琳·弗洛西亚教授强调了一些研究,这些研究表明,与父母的口音不同,孩子更有可能学会他们所处环境的口音。)” 根据最后一段中“Well, what it shows us is that babies are learning language through practice, and that the more time that parents spend interacting with their children, the greater opportunity for this. While babbling babies may not be able to say many words, studies estimate that they can understand many times the number of words than those that they can actually say. Giving babies exposure to a greater number of words allows them to better build their vocabulary.(它告诉我们,婴儿是通过练习来学习语言的,父母和孩子互动的时间越多,学习语言的机会就越大。虽然咿呀学语的婴儿可能不会说很多单词,但研究估计,他们能理解的单词数量是他们实际能说的单词数量的许多倍。让婴儿接触更多的单词可以让他们更好地建立词汇量。)”可推知,关于婴儿的语言学习能力,这篇文章暗示了更多的互动可以促进婴儿的语言学习。故选B项。 C I came across the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less from a library app and I can say that after reading, it did not disappoint. 30 Which of the following is a feature of essentialists? A 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第二段“It talks about how important it is to focus on absolutely important things and remove the unnecessary distractions. (它谈到了专注于绝对重要的事情和消除不必要的干扰是多么重要。)”以及划线单词的前半句话“Essentialism means continuously defining where we can create the most value(本质主义意味着不断定义我们可以在哪里创造最大价值)”可知,本质论教会了我们专注于绝对重要的事情和消除不必要的干扰。我们要找到哪里能够创造最大的价值,然后找到方式去消除不必要的干扰,找到方法最轻松地执行这些任务。所以划线单词的意思是“执行”。故选A。 根据第三段“In Essentialism, McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the pursuit of less. More importantly, by applying a more selective standard for what is essential, the pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can channel our time, energy and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward the goals and activities that matter.(在本质论中,麦基翁借鉴了与世界上最具创新性的公司领导者合作的经验和见解,展示了如何实现追求更少。更重要的是,通过对重要的东西应用更具选择性的标准,追求更少的东西可以让我们重新控制自己的选择,这样我们就可以将时间、精力和努力用于为重要的目标和活动做出尽可能高的贡献)”可知,本质论中告诉了人们如何实现追求更少,这样我们就可以将时间、精力和努力用于为重要的目标和活动做出尽可能高的贡献。所以本段重点强调了本质论的重要意义。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“He also tells that a non-essentialist will commit to everything and put his personal priorities (优先事项) on the side while that is opposite in case of the essentialist. Whether it is in work-life or personal life, a non-essentialist will try to do more by quick-fix solutions but an essentialist will focus on removing barriers and nothing else. (他还告诉,一个非本质主义者会致力于一切,并把他的个人优先事项放在一边,而在本质主义者的情况下,情况恰恰相反。无论是在工作生活还是个人生活中,非本质主义者都会试图通过快速解决方案做更多的事情,但本质主义会专注于消除障碍,而不是其他)”可知,本质主义的特征在于会专注于个人优先事项,而非本质主义则会把个人优先事项放在一边。故选D。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Finally, the book tells us how to set out the important things in our life—like a routine of 8 hours of sleep, daily journal or playing or relaxing every day to let our minds rest. In today’s fast-paced life, McKeown says, restfulness is a precious escape from the noisy world.(最后,这本书告诉我们如何安排我们生活中的重要事情,比如每天8小时的睡眠、写日记或玩耍或放松,让我们的大脑得到休息。麦基翁说,在当今快节奏的生活中,宁静是逃离嘈杂世界的宝贵方式)”可知,McKeown建议人们在生活中要适当的休息,使大脑得到放松。故选C。 D A man with Parkinson’s(帕金森)disease has experienced a substantial improvement in his ability to walk after being fitted with a device that electrically stimulates his spinal cord(脊髓). 32. A 33. A 34. C 35. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. He quickly regained his balance, his heart pounding in his chest. The adrenaline surged through him, pushing him forward. He focused on the track ahead, blocking out the cheers and jeers of the crowd. His muscles worked in perfect harmony, each stride bringing him closer to the finish line. As he rounded the final bend, he saw the leaders just ahead. With a final burst of speed, he sprinted towards them, his lungs burning and his legs screaming in protest. But he didn’t let up, his determination propelling him forward. To his surprise, he crossed the finish line in second place, just inches behind the winner. Paragraph 2: The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. “Well done, John,” he said, his tone no longer sneering but genuinely impressed. “You’ve come a long way. Remember, it’s not about winning every time, it’s about pushing yourself to be better, about facing your fears and rising above them.” John stared at the “man”, realizing he was a figment of his own doubts and insecurities. “Thanks,” he muttered, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He turned to his coach and teammates, who were cheering him on. For the first time, he felt like he truly belonged. He knew he still had a lot to learn and many more races to run, but today, he had proven to himself that he could compete with the best. And that, he thought, was victory enough. 词汇激活 情绪类 集中精力于:focus on/concentrate on 意识到:realize/be aware of 重获:regain/recapture 面对:face/confront 行为类 让某人惊讶的是:to one’s surprise/to one’s amazement 决心:determination/resolution 【点睛】[高分句型1] As he rounded the final bend, he saw the leaders just ahead.(运用了as引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] John stared at the “man”, realizing he was a figment of his own doubts and insecurities.(运用了现在分词realizing作状语,以及省略引导词that的宾语从句作realizing的宾语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
