Passage 1

How to Make Eye Contact
Making eye contact can be tricky, especially if you are shy, or nervous. But good eye-contact is important for building trust and engaging an audience. 1
Turning your shoulders and head to face the other person’s eyes.
Opening up your body to the other person helps to tell him you are listening, engaged, and ready to communicate. 2 Position yourself a few feet away from the other person’s face, which ensures a respectful distance while still maintaining a sense of closeness.
Choosing a focal point near the eyes.
Most commonly, this is one of the other person’s eyes. But if you do feel uncomfortable, you can also avoid their eyes in a wise way. 3 You can also choose to look under or above the eyes, or at a certain point around the ear. Bear in mind that maintaining eye contact with the help of an appropriate focal point is an effective way to show sincerity.
4
Think of how you would look at a painting or great view — you are not focusing intently on them, but instead looking at them gently. So, relax your gaze (注视) by breathing slowly as you make gentle eye-contact and nodding occasionally while you listen.
Breaking eye contact briefly every 5-15 seconds.
5 While you don’t need to count the seconds, you should look away every once in a while to keep the conversation light and easy, but only for a few seconds. Some casual ways to do so include: laughing, nodding, and acknowledging the other person; looking at the sky; looking off to the side briefly, as if remembering something or running your hands through your hair.
A.Making gentle eye-contact.
B.Looking between their eyes is a good choice.
C.It also makes eye contact more natural to maintain.
D.Below are the reasons why you should make eye contact.
E.Avoiding hesitant eye contact in a formal and important meeting.
F.Too much eye-contact can be as uncomfortable as none at all.
G.All it takes is a little practice to confidently hold someone’s gaze.
Passage 2
With the semester approaching its end, sophomores (高二学生) are faced with three significant exams. These include the information technology high school academic proficiency test, the general high school academic proficiency qualification test, and the final joint examination of key high schools in Yancheng. 6 .
For the review content arrangement, it is essential that students make a detailed plan. What comes first is the information technology exam. 7 . It is recommended that they spend sufficient time on operating different software and understanding their functions. For the academic proficiency qualification test, a comprehensive review of all subjects is necessary, especially those fundamental concepts and formulas (公式) that act as the building blocks of knowledge. As for the joint examination, it is advisable that they summarize the knowledge learned during the semester and practice with mock tests.
Psychological adjustment is equally important. It is necessary that students keep a calm and positive attitude. 8 . Instead, they can take short breaks during study, which can help them to regain energy. Deep breathing exercises or listening to soft music can be effective stress relievers.
In terms of time planning, students need to allocate their time reasonably. 9 . For example, in the early morning, when the mind is as fresh as a daisy, they can focus on memorizing theoretical knowledge. In the afternoon, they can engage in exercises and mock tests to strengthen their understanding and application abilities.
In conclusion, only by carefully arranging the review content, effectively adjusting the psychological state, and wisely planning the time can students be well-prepared to face these three important exams and achieve satisfactory results. 10 .
A.Through such efforts they can hope to move forward on their academic journey
B.They need to make a schedule showing the particular time for each subject and exam
C.The methods of review and preparation are far from being crucial
D.All these exams are like crucial battlegrounds for their academic progress
E.What requires their focus is the practical skills and theoretical knowledge
F.By no means should they be overwhelmed by stress and anxiety
G.A large amount of time should be devoted to key subjects

Achieving Success in Journalistic News Writing
No book, article or blog post can turn an ambitious writer into a successful journalist. All that it can do is to help the writer learn to write. The primary skill in learning to write is practice. 11
Among the most convenient subjects are the events and news in the world around us. Such topics are what skilled journalists write about, and that is why we call this form of writing “journalistic writing”.
Journalistic writing is not a special literary gymnastics that requires a special talent and an expansive vocabulary. 12 It is using language to tell what is going on in the world. As such, it requires no special talent beyond seeing and understanding what is taking place around us, to grasp its significance and relation to other events, and to tell others what we have seen and heard.
13 One of the chief characteristics is timeliness and relevance. It has little time to talk about the past, except in comparison with the present. It has little time to foretell the future, except in pointing out the significance of the present. Its subject is today. It is primarily concerned with facts. The writer considers himself a recorder of the things other persons are doing and thinking.
Another basic part of journalistic writing is that the writer prepares it for a definite purpose. Some writers, like novelists, write to use beautiful words and sentences. 14 However, the writer who favors a journalistic style uses English simply to tell what he has seen and heard; he realizes that his reader cares more for the things he tells than for the way in which he tells and expresses them.
Success in journalistic writing demands two important skills. One is the inborn skill to see and understand. The other is the skill to tell what the writer has seen in a way that makes the reader see the same thing. 15 If the writer is eager to excel, he must expand his knowledge and education so he can better understand and evaluate the things he sees and hears.
A.It will not do them any good to write news items.
B.To these imaginative literary writers, they favor expression.
C.To practice writing, one must have something to write about.
D.An ambitious writer can develop both skills if he lacks them.
E.The writer must write it now or never―without giving up quality.
F.Journalistic writing differs mainly in its subject matter and purpose.
G.Instead, it is the plainest, most reserved form of English composition.

Passage 5
In psychology, the word “prove” is used carefully, much like a painter applies each brushstroke (笔触) with great care. Unlike the strong conclusions in physical sciences, psychological research builds a bigger picture through many small studies. 21 His discovery was not a sudden breakthrough but the result of hard and detailed work.
Similarly, Elizabeth Loftus’s research doubts how accurate witness reports are. Instead of calling it “unreliable,” researchers use terms like “potential unreliability.” 22 So, they use words like “demonstrate” and “suggest” to show the uncertainty in their conclusions.
23 Instead, I teach my students to think critically about how to use it, much like a gardener who cares for plants. When students first use the word, I encourage them to think about factors that could challenge their conclusions. For example, I might ask them, “How do we know that not all participants had false memories?” Or, for French students, “Why might these findings not apply to French culture?”
This approach helps students grasp the complexity of psychological research and develop critical thinking skills. It encourages them to reflect and analyze, helping them communicate their findings with accuracy. 24
In psychology, “proving” something is like building a symphony. 25 In education, teaching critical thinking and clear language use is essential for understanding the core of psychological research.
A.This indicates that findings might change.
B.In my classroom, I do not ban the word “prove.”
C.Each piece of evidence adds to a larger understanding.
D.Psychological theories are often revised as new evidence emerges.
E.As a teacher, I often remind my students to use this word appropriately.
F.This method also builds appreciation for the depth of psychological inquiry.
G.For example, Eric Kandel spent years studying sea animals to learn how memory works.
Passage 6
Phones hold so much of our digital lives. If your phones get stolen or lost, you can face major problems. 26
It’s vital to set passwords to your phones. There should be passwords for all your important apps, including your emails, social media accounts, bank accounts, and photos. 27 Some police forces and phone companies advise turning off message previews. This prevents thieves trying to break into your accounts when the phone is locked.
If you are unlucky enough to have your phone stolen, report it to the police. Call your insurance company if you have a policy that covers the device. 28 In this case they can freeze your number and issue a replacement SIM card. Inform your bank so they can watch out for unusual financial activity.
29 This service will show your phone’s current or last known location on a map. The service is also handy if you cannot find your phone somewhere in the house. You can get the phone to play a sound, even if it is on silent. If the device shows up in an unfamiliar location on the map, and you suspect it has been stolen, it’s better to contact the police.
If you cannot find your phone, there’re some final steps to take. Withdraw from all your accounts that are accessible on the phone and try to disable them. 30 Finally, you can erase the phone remotely so that there is no chance of any data falling into the wrong hands.
A.Inform your phone service providers.
B.Turn on newer features like the remote control.
C.Try to find your phone with the find-my-device service.
D.Then remove your phone from your list of trusted devices.
E.The number can link you to the phone if it gets recovered.
F.They can discourage others from trying to enter your phones.
G.You can take some steps before and after your phone goes missing.
Passage 7
As we all know, not all thoughts are welcome. Intrusive (入侵的) thoughts often emerge as unwanted visitors, disrupting our minds. They are involuntary and unwanted mental ideas or urges that pop into our minds without invitation. 31 .
Most people experience intrusive thoughts from time to time. For example, if someone is driving, they might have an urge to drive off a bridge. Most people know they would never do such things and don’t pay much attention to them. 32 . And they worry that these thoughts will come true or cause them to do something terrible. This can lead to them performing compulsions (强制行为) to try and reduce their anxiety.
Fortunately, there are strategies to deal with intrusive thoughts.
Accept them. Accept and allow the thoughts into your mind. 33 . Try to just observe them and allow time to pass. Remember that intrusive thoughts are normal, and just having a thought doesn’t make it come true.
34 . We know it’s difficult sometimes! Developing a sympathetic mindset toward yourself can do so much against unwanted thoughts, though. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a friend going through a similar struggle.
Stay present. The more present you are in the “here and now”, the less power you’re giving to these nagging fears and negative thoughts. You can try some grounding exercises, such as focusing on your breath. 35 .
A.Love yourself
B.Don’t try to push them away
C.Never be too hard on yourself
D.However, some people become troubled by their intrusive thoughts
E.They can be anything that a person finds inconsistent with their values
F.That can help bring your attention back and break the cycle of intrusive thoughts
G.People who have such terrible experiences may be easy to have intrusive thoughts
Passage 8
An old study in the advertising literature found that we’re more likely to read advertisements for the products we have bought, even if they have proved to be “lemons”, or useless. This phenomenon also applies to our decision-making process. Humans sometimes make bad choices and stick with them despite negative consequences. 36 But in general bad choices have to do with acting out of emotion and not out of reason. Strong emotions can cloud our thinking and lead us down one rabbit hole after another.
Doubling down on a bad choice may also relate to our self-esteem and the ability to admit mistakes. Narcissists(自恋者) usually won’t admit a mistake because it contradicts their self-image. But the fact is that many of us aren’t narcissistic. 37 Even when trapped in a bad relationship, we may still stick with it, hoping things will eventually change for the better.
Resilience involves managing strong emotions and preventing them from fully dictating our decisions. Considering emotion is important, enthusiasm for something can move us forward, but it can also block our vision. 38 While relying solely on our “gut feeling” can be helpful, it works best when we use our head, integrating intuitive insights with logical thinking.
Doubling down is generally unwise. We need to acknowledge our errors and be willing to say we’re sorry and apologize. 39 In fact, it’s smarter than denying mistakes. By admitting them, we learn valuable lessons and promote personal growth. Recognizing when to cut our losses is crucial, allowing us to pursue new opportunities with confidence. 40
A.And we often struggle with this.
B.The reasons for that are complex.
C.Make our decisions with full passion.
D.There is nothing wrong with doing this.
E.So stop trying to make lemonade from bad lemons.
F.The more errors you make, the more you will learn.
G.We should consider what’s right, not just what feels right.
Passage 9
Meeting minutes are the official summary of what happened during a meeting. They serve as an outline, a written record for anyone unable to attend, and to use for future reference. 41 So how to write meeting minutes? Here are the basics you should follow.
Be concise (简明的).
42 As the minutes taker, your job is to document what is happening at the meeting. This is a written record that covers just the main points. You don’t need an exact accounting of everything that is said.
Just note the facts.
Avoid personal observations when writing meeting minutes. If you want to take separate notes of your own, you are welcome to do so. 43 Some of this is boring information to keep track of: meeting names, date and time, action items and decisions made. But later on, those meeting notes may contain essential information to keep everyone on the same page about what happened during that meeting.
44
With meeting minutes, it’s important to write down who attended the meeting, but also who didn’t, so there is no confusion about who may have discussed or voted on an issue.
Use a template (模版) for the right format.
If you’re writing formal meeting minutes, follow a certain format. For trade unions, schools, city and county governments, and others, you may need to follow Robert’s Rules of Order. While writing informal meeting minutes, you have more flexibility. Think of what your organization needs, and what’s been done in the past. 45
A.Note who is unable to attend.
B.Then improve on that process.
C.Don’t include personal thoughts or observations.
D.Your creative writing skills must take a back seat.
E.But the meeting minutes should be a factual record of what was discussed.
F.These notes typically highlight the key issues that were discussed at the meeting.
G.When written well, meeting minutes are a critical communication tool for your organization.
Passage 10
The average American generates five pounds of trash per day, according to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Some of it gets recycled but most of it ends up in landfills. 46
Do a trash examination. Check what you' re throwing away by writing a list of the trash you produce. 47 You might write “used wipes and paper towels” under “nursery” or “food waste and metal cans” under “cooking”. This will help you grasp the extent of the trash you create and find ways to cut it,
Save what you can. See if there's anything you can save before throwing it in the trash. Maybe you can mend an old pair of jeans instead of buying a new pair. Or maybe you can cut up old T-shirts into rag. 48 If you have a bunch of overripe bananas, put it in the freezer to make banana bread later.
Rely less on pre-packaged foods. Often, food comes in wasteful packaging. Usually, some drinks come in plastic containers that may not be easy to recycle. So source your food in ways that don't require you to get it from a package. 49 Instead of buying oat milk in a non-recyclable container, make it at home and store it in a jar, removing the packaging waste.
50 Once you start noticing how much trash you produce at home, you' ll start to cut down on trash elsewhere. Bring your own reusable fork to a restaurant that uses single-use plastic tools, Or ask the waiter in a coffee bar to fill up your coffee mug instead of a paper cup.
A.Cut down on rubbish in your daily life.
B.That means making some of your own food.
C.Look for ways to cut waste outside the home.
D.Organize your list by the rooms in your house or by activity.
E.Besides, think about how you can creatively save your leftovers.
F.By doing so you can make the rooms in your house clean and tidy.
G.Fortunately, you can live a low-waste lifestyle by redesigning your behavior.
Passage 11
How to Overcome the Harmful Habit of Judging
You’ve done it. I’ve done it. We all do it— we all sometimes pass judgment on others when their behavior doesn’t meet our standards. Clothing choices, how people spend their free time, job skills— the list of possible things to judge is endless.
51 While you may not consciously label them as such, you are familiar with nonverbals that convey judgment: pursed lips, raised eyebrows, crossed arms, tipping head to literally look down upon another.
We judge others to protect our own self-images. But that protection comes at a price. 52 And with it comes defensiveness, prejudice, and hostility(敌意). Judgment is just a dressed-up version of shame. We put the shame on to someone else so that we don’t have to feel our own.
To overcome judgment, you should shore up your self-worth. If you are grounded in confidence and value yourself, you are less likely to be judgmental. Remind yourself when you feel judged by others, it’s a reflection of their own battle with shame, not who or what you are. Yes, you make mistakes and sometimes behave badly. 53 You grow, learn, and improve. You accomplish and achieve and win. You are valuable and worthy even when you fall short.
When you accept your flaws(缺陷) and mistakes and still see yourself as a worthwhile human being in spite of them, you can in turn accept other flawed human beings, too. 54
Judging others creates a false sense of self-worth. If you find yourself doing it, stop. 55 But do take a look in the mirror. Where do you need shoring up? It takes some thoughtfulness and work, but you’ll have better relationships, improved trust, more creativity, and greater influence when you stop judging others and start valuing yourself.
A.Don’t beat yourself up for it.
B.Shame hits you from many angles.
C.But you are more than your mistakes.
D.You’ve been on the receiving end, too.
E.Judgment costs creativity, curiosity, and trust.
F.At the core is the feeling of not being good enough.
G.The more you like and accept yourself, the less you have to put others down.
Passage 12
With travel on the rise, more families are planning to take their home life on the road, whether it’s for a weekend or a longer trip. Traveling with kids can be stressful—with all those suitcases and cries of “Are we there yet?” 56
Involving young children in planning a trip might sound silly, but it’s far more valuable than it seems. “You shouldn’t expect a 4-year-old to spend eight hours in museums,” says Waldon, a family travel expert. “It’s really smart for parents to think like their kid and realize, ‘ 57 ’” That attitude helps parents avoid terrible situations that may ruin the day.
58 If a little one is into dinosaurs, perhaps you’ll want to check out a city’s Natural History Museum. If they love animals, maybe there’s a way to include a visit to a farm or an aquarium (水族馆).
One of Waldon’s favourite ways to get younger kids excited about a trip is reading. “Books are perfect for little armchair travellers,” she says. “ 59 ” Before a recent trip to Puerto Rico, Waldon read her kids a book about a frog native to the island. Afterwards, her daughters got really excited to hear this little frog singing at night.
People often think the trip is going to be one Instagram worthy moment after another, but that never happens. 60 When kids are involved, they can become invested in getting through those problems. They also learn to work things out together as a family.
A.Most children really enjoy challenges.
B.Actually, no family trip goes without problems.
C.However, it can also be a highly rewarding activity.
D.That way, we’re getting more of that local experience.
E.This is a 30-minute max type opportunity for my child.
F.They get the kids curious about the trip before leaving home.
G.Parents can also play into their kids’ interests when planning a trip.
Passage 13
How can you make sure to have great conversations, especially with people you don’t know well? How do you keep a conversation flowing, especially with someone you’ve just met? Your first and most important step is to make that person feel listened to. 61
The No.1 way to make someone feel listened to is to actually listen to them. That may sound stupidly obvious, but it can be hard to actually do. When someone is talking to you about something, especially if what they’re saying doesn’t directly relate to your interests, your mind may want to busy itself with other things. 62 The key to better engagement is to push distractions aside and concentrate. The more you can actually focus on what the person is saying, the better you’ ll be able to engage with them.
Beyond that, using body language can be very useful. 63 Smile at the other person and nod to let them know you understand the points they’re making. You can take it a step further and mirror them, reflecting back their body positioning and posture. 64 If focusing on body language distracts you from listening, then it isn’t worth it, in my opinion. In that case, I believe it’s better to just focus on what they’re saying. Chances are, your body language will naturally reflect you really are paying attention.
65 It’s a bit like playing tennis, where the objective is to keep the volley going as long as possible. If you always respond to what the other person says with just a word or two, you’ re putting too much pressure on them to keep the conversation going. Conversely, if you take a conversational opening and run with it, launching into a detailed explanation of how your company works or a lengthy anecdote, you’re likely to lose their interest. You effectively shut the other person out of the conversation.
A.That’s something most of us desire.
B.However, I’ll add a word of warning.
C.Make eye contact much but not all of the time.
D.It is a great way to learn how to keep the volley going.
E.Being good at starting conversations is an essential skill.
F.You might start thinking about whether you’re wasting time.
G.Then, pay attention to the rhythm and flow of the conversation.

Passage 1
When others outperform us, should we feel threatened or inspired? Should we fear or respect those who are more capable, more skilled or more successful than us? 1
A study conducted by educational psychologists at Brown University explored how kindergartners in the U. S. and China tell stories about peers who perform better than others. 2 Chinese children often expressed respect for high achievers and a desire to imitate their success. In contrast, U. S. children’s stories typically focused on negative reactions, including envy and being left out.
The findings reflect the cultural narratives (叙述) surrounding achievement in each society. In American culture, the “self” is defined by qualities, and abilities, which are largely fixed. Thus, while the achievement of others reflects their high ability, it becomes a mirror to reveal one’s own lack of ability. 3 As a result, Chinese children tend to view others’ achievements not as signs of natural superiority, but as opportunities for learning and self-improvement.
4 In China, students’ overall performance may be publicly recognized to encourage success and motivate further improvement. Teachers even invite outstanding graduates to share their experiences and lessons with current students to promote learning. In the U. S., such phenomena are less common as they can be seen as threats to self-esteem.
Ultimately, our perceptions and reactions to others’ success are profoundly shaped by cultural narratives surrounding achievement. 5 These narratives, in other words, determine whether we feel threatened or inspired, fearful or respectful, annoyed or eager to copy others.
A.It can be a source of motivation.
B.These cultural differences extend to educational practices.
C.Education facilitates personal growth and social progress.
D.They influence our motivations, relationships and actions.
E.Both groups told detailed stories but showed clear differences in content.
F.Different responses can lead to constructive or destructive reactions and actions.
G.However, Chinese culture stresses abilities and qualities can improve through efforts.
Passage 2
Have you ever noticed that some people seem to climb the career ladder (梯子) effortlessly, while others struggle to get their foot on the first step? 6 Often, it’s about the Matthew Effect: the idea that initial success can create a snowball effect, making future success easier to achieve. Understanding how it works can help you make use of it to your advantage.
7 Think of yourself as a young designer who lands a high-profile client early on. That one project, if handled well, opens the door to bigger opportunities, referrals and a growing collection of impressive work. 8 When your manager sees you excel in the first place, they’re more likely to trust you with bigger responsibilities.
Visibility is crucial to the Matthew Effect. 9 If you are an employee who consistently delivers outstanding work but doesn’t share that, you may be overshadowed by a coworker who’s just as competent but better at self-promotion. Consider the example of a mid-level marketing manager. By regularly presenting their team’s results at company meetings, they ensure leadership associates their name with success. This visibility can lead to opportunities like promotions, speaking engagements, or even being headhunted by other companies.
Another key driver of the Matthew Effect is the power of networks. People with strong professional networks are often exposed to more opportunities than those with limited connections. Psychologically, people tend to associate success with competence. 10 This is why networking isn’t just about meeting people — it’s about creating meaningful relationships that lead to trust and mutual (相互的) benefit.
A.Visibility contributes to the interaction with celebrated people.
B.It’s not always about talent or hard work — though both are vital.
C.More clients want to work with you when you’re already successful.
D.If people don’t know about your achievements, it’s hard to obtain more success.
E.The first big break in your career often sets the stage for everything that follows.
F.Early recognition builds confidence — not just in the people around you, but in yourself.
G.If you’re recommended by someone respected in your field, the recommendation carries weight.
Passage 3
The Magic of Embracing Change
Just in the past few weeks, my friend has become an advocate of the idea of minimalism. Minimalism is seemingly about simplifying lifestyles to own fewer possessions. But as my friend told me all the creative methods people are adopting to reduce material desires or repurpose items or resist the urge to constantly acquire new things, I realized that, minimalism begins with something deeper. 11 And in many ways, the initial step, which is merely being open to a different approach, can be the most challenging step of all.
This struck me as I read a cover story on urban development. On the surface, it’s about more and more cities deciding to adopt green building standards as a necessary measure for sustainable growth. 12 That is always going to be tough. But in recent years, cities have recognized that the traditional ways of assessing progress, while not necessarily incorrect, were limited. While they measured one aspect of development well, they failed to take into account a broad range of factors, such as environmental impact, community well-being, and cultural richness that were equally vital to the overall success and prosperity of a city. 13 The old standards weren’t sufficient. Cities could do better.
So what has occurred? Cities are progressively agreeing to think differently about urban planning. They are determined to do their utmost to consider the whole picture. 14 Some argue that abandoning strict building codes is a mistake. Nevertheless, once the first step is taken, the momentum of logic and ethics accelerates progress. At a time when there seems to be so much uncertainty in the world, it is possible to look around and instead see something else: the world constantly grappling with the ongoing task of agreeing to new concepts. Transportation today illustrates how easily we can get stuck in the conventional mindset. 15 That can be an urban planner striving to be more innovative in designing public spaces. Or it can be a minimalist vlogger urging us all to think differently about how we can create a more harmonious and sustainable environment. The only constant is the universal pursuit of improvement, and that will never leave us where it started.
A.It commences with a willingness to alter our mindset.
B.There have inevitably been some missteps throughout this journey.
C.In essence, they excluded numerous exceptional opportunities without even noticing.
D.At its heart, it exposes a more fundamental issue: how we assess the value of urban progress.
E.They offer the most cutting-edge facilities and guarantee the financial success of every resident.
F.Conversely, the world is perpetually demanding that we act with greater foresight, greater responsibility, and a broader perspective.
G.Several cities renowned for their stringent urban regulations saw an unexpected influx of investors.
Passage 4
How Loneliness Is Killing Us
Loneliness is absolutely an epidemic (流行病) in our society, but it’s been growing for decades. Loneliness is the sense that “I am less connected to other people than I want to be.” 16 And that makes it different from isolation (独处). I can deliberately isolate myself and feel great about that, but only you can tell if you’re lonely.
17 In some studies, as many as, 60% of people will say that they feel lonely much of the time. Young adults aged 16 to 24 are the loneliest age group.
There are many factors that are responsible for that. Loneliness was on the rise from the 1950s in part because of the rise of private cars. We’ve become a much more mobile society where the networks of family and friends get loose as people move for jobs and other kinds of opportunities like education.
18 But then it tears us away from the communities we are born into and spend much of our lives creating. When television came into the American home, there was more of a decline in investing in our communities. And that was made worse as the digital revolution gave us more and more screens to look at.
Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health. 19 In addition, people who are lonely in late life have more rapid brain decline.
The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other people. 20 .You belong. You matter. You’re connected.
A.It’s a very subjective experience.

Passage 5
An old study in the advertising literature found that we’re more likely to read advertisements for the products we have bought, even if they have proved to be “lemons”, or useless. This phenomenon also applies to our decision-making process. Humans sometimes make bad choices and stick with them despite negative consequences. 21 But in general bad choices have to do with acting out of emotion and not out of reason.
22 Even when trapped in a bad relationship, we may still stick with it, hoping things will eventually change for the better.
Resilience involves managing strong emotions and preventing them from fully dictating our decisions. Considering emotion is important, enthusiasm for something can move us forward, but it can also block our vision. 23 While relying solely on our “gut feeling” can be helpful, it works best when we use our head, integrating intuitive insights with logical thinking.
Doubling down is generally unwise. We need to acknowledge our errors and be willing to say we’re sorry and apologize. 24 In fact, it’s smarter than denying mistakes. By admitting them, we learn valuable lessons and promote personal growth. Recognizing when to cut our losses is crucial, allowing us to pursue new opportunities with confidence. 25

Passage 1
According to scientist Shirley Mueller, collecting feeds the pleasure center of the brain, but without the drawbacks of alcohol or smoking. “ 1 .” says Mueller. “And it’s also a way for the collector to temporarily let go of the burdens in their lives and find joy in the moment.”
2 . More than 100,000 years ago, our ancestors searched for stones, shells, and other useless objects just as they hunted for food. In modern times, while some people collect as a statement of who they are, others collect as an investment or a source of pleasure.
Collecting requires attaining knowledge. You have to figure out where you can find the desired items, what they’re worth, and how you will organize and display your collections. Those activities stimulate areas of the brain involved in its functioning, skills that include working memory, multitasking, and controlling impulse (脉搏). 3 .
On a physiological level, research in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience shows that physical objects have unique effects on brain functions specifically related to memory. Meanwhile, visualizing objects stimulates many areas of the brain. Each object is associated with a person, experience, or moment in time, and you can better recall those things because you have a reminder. 4 . Each item is a clue for your memory.
5 . Collectors often report that the friendship of other collectors is one of the most rewarding aspects of collecting. Interacting with sellers, other collectors, or even admirers of your collection can also serve as a foundation for relationship-building. It can develop both a sense of belonging and individuality.
A.Of course, collecting is not a new phenomenon
B.It is a bit challenging and tiring for us to display
C.Collecting can be a form of exercise for the mind
D.In that way, collections act as a physical time machine
E.Collecting is a way to feel a sense of safety and comfort
F.Collecting also seems to hit fundamental relationship needs
G.It takes a long time for people to form the habit of collecting
Passage 2
Intuition (直觉力) is a survival skill that assists you in avoiding danger and making new discoveries. Tuning into your intuition can enable you to understand yourself better. 6
Intuition is a quiet voice within your mind that tells you when something is right or wrong. It’s also known as a “gut feeling” - for example when you know you’ll be friends with someone before you’ve even spoken to them. Author Beatrice Moise describes intuition as “an awareness of your senses, the feeling of butterflies in your stomach or suddenly being aware of your heartbeat or breathing”. Intuition occurs when your brain compares what’s going on around you with experiences stored in your memories. 7 This explains why you occasionally make speedy decisions that appear from nowhere.
8 Listening to your intuition and gut feelings involves trusting your judgement. This helps you by building confidence, which makes it easier to face challenges and discover what you’re good at. Trusting your gut feelings means you can recognize when people or places make you uncomfortable and helps keep you safe. 9 Therefore, only take a chance on things that are safe and familiar, like choosing fun ingredients for a cake.
You should have a full recognition of your intuition, which means paying attention to what your body feels and what your head thinks. Try noticing how your body behaves when you’re delighted, like going on holiday or seeing friends. This can help guide you in making decisions. 10 Did you have any feelings that things weren’t going your way? If something makes you feel tense or uncomfortable, don’t do it or wait until you have time to think it through properly.
A.How does your intuition help you?
B.How can you make others trust your intuition?
C.It can also help you discover what you’re good at.
D.These can help correct all the wrong decisions you made.
E.It creates a feeling so fast that you often don’t even notice it.
F.Similarly, focus on how you think when you’ve made a bad choice.
G.However, like any decision you make, your intuition won’t always be right.
Passage 3
The Power of Thinking Differently
Just in the past few weeks, my wife has become the supporter of the concept of zero-waste living. Zero-waste is obviously about changing behaviors to produce less waste. But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue (积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else. 11 And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.
This came to mind as I read a cover story in education. Ostensibly (表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude (天赋). 12
That is always going to be hard. But in recent decades, colleges have realized that the old ways of judging individual value, while not necessarily wrong, were narrow. While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success. 13 The tests weren’t good enough. Schools could do better.
So what has happened? Schools are increasingly consenting to think differently about admissions. They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual. 14 Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake. However, once the first step is taken, the onward pull of reason and morality speed progress.
At a time when there appears to be so much confusion in the world, it is possible to look out and instead see something else: the world struggling with the perpetual (长久的) task of consenting to new ideas. Politics today show how easily we can become stuck in the mentally familiar.
15 That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.
The only constant is the universal need for progress, and that will never leave us where it found us.
A.It starts with consenting (同意) to change thought.
B.Undoubtedly there have been missteps along the way.
C.In short, they left a lot of amazing people out and didn’t even know it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals something more fundamental: how we judge individual value.
E.They offer the most challenging academic programs and ensure every student’s physical and mental health.
F.The world, on the other hand, is constantly demanding that we be kinder and more connected and think ever larger.
G.Many universities known to be highly selective in their admissions policies received more applicants than usual.
Passage 4
In order to recover from mental distress, there’s really no alternative but to get acquainted with psychotherapy. 16
Every human is in part neurotic (神经质).
A neurosis is any pattern of thinking or behavior that blocks our personalities and potential. 17 . It should be part of every evolved human’s mission to seek to understand the neurotic elements of their own personalities. The enquiry “And how are you neurotic?” should not be taken as an insult rather a sensible request for more information on our particular flaws.
The origins of most of our neuroses lie in our childhoods
18 . A trauma (创伤) may be continuous petty criticism or emotional neglect. Something qualities as a trauma because the child isn’t able to make sense of the extreme pain and therefore suffers a serious blow to its command of trust, intelligence, and love.
19
Where there is an over-controlling parent, there will be a child with problems around autonomy (自主权). Where there is a belittling parent, there will be a child with difficulties of confidence and self-esteem. Every character flaw on the side of the parent necessarily imposes a toll on a child.
Healing comes through self-awareness.
To improve, we need to get rid of the state of depression and recover contact with the original trauma. And in order to do that, we need to accept that doing so would be a good idea. 20 .
It won’t be enough to know the past, we will need to feel it too.
We may have a practical sense of the central details of our childhoods, but an intellectual grasp won’t be enough. We need to sincerely reexperience rather than merely intellectually know the past to free ourselves from its hold. Our neuroses will weaken or dissolve once the traumas are finally known and, even more importantly, felt.
A.Parents tend to give rise to a neurosis.
B.Its central ideas can be summarized as follows.
C.We have to agree that self-knowledge will be what can save us.
D.Parents assist their children in figuring out the difficulties.
E.Trauma leads to depression which overtime inspires the formation of neurotic symptoms.
F.What causes neuroses are intolerable frustrations and pains that we can refer to as traumas.
G.We may be neurotic in love or at work, in our friendships or in our attitudes to creativity or politics.
Passage 5
Virtual internships (实习) are now a common occurrence as we adjust to the “new normal” when it comes to working. 21 Still, there are many positives that can come from virtual internships that you should consider.
Use it for resume building
22 It showcases your ability to manage your time effectively and handle tasks on your own. Besides, securing glowing recommendations from a remote employer highlights skills you gained through remote work.
Consider the cost savings
Having a job can cost quite a bit when you take the commute (通勤) into consideration. With remote work, the costs are significantly lower, if they exist at all. 23 While being in person has a certain feel difficult to let go of, working from home is arguably one of the best ways to store up some money.
Make the most of your time savings
Additionally, without that commute, you gain some extra time to get things done that you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. This includes many things, such as watching your favorite shows and cooking homemade meals on a nightly basis. 24
Treat it as experience
Lastly, keep in mind that a virtual internship is still an internship. Experience is experience, no matter how you obtain it. 25 For that reason, understand that a virtual internship is still experience, and that it’s still a feasible option to include on your resume.
A.That being said, it can be easily viewed as a negative.
B.You get to work from comfort home, no commute required.
C.It is the way of the future, at least, for the foreseeable future.
D.Gas, parking fees, and even grabbing lunch can quickly add up.
E.It doesn’t seem like much, but the extra time can be a real game-changer.
F.While it’s easy to dismiss a virtual internship, you’d be missing an opportunity.
G.As for building a professional profile, remote work can really sell your experience.

Passage 1
(2025广东省高三1月第一次模拟考试)To put into words my time in Antarctica and South Georgia is nearly impossible. I had always described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 1 I was not the only one who felt this way. About 50% of the passengers of our expedition (远征) had been to Antarctica at least once before. This goes to show just how magical the destination is.
2 How tiny you feel next to towering glaciers and icebergs. The blinding white blankets everything, blurring the boundary between land and ocean. The icy water moves through your body as you take the Polar Plunge. The solemn silence calms your restlessness and reminds you of heart-touching stories of survival from explorers of the past. The list goes on.
Antarctica makes you feel so small and insignificant, in the best way. Everything has a purpose, and the cycle of life is evident. You get front row seats to witness the most incredible show: nature. 3 For example, when you see a brown skua (贼鸥) attacking a penguin chick, your heart aches. Then your expedition guide regretfully tells you that a chick that is small in March would have very slim chances of surviving the upcoming winter. 4
Things move fast here, every month offering something unique and special to see. In March, the weather is a bit more unpredictable, and the sea ice is beginning to form again. Our voyage was the last of the season. In two more weeks, expedition ships would not be able to break through the ice. The penguins are completing their yearly feather-changing process. They are really weak during this time, and cannot dive. 5
These animals, arguably the cutest you will ever see, survive such unfavorable environments. It’s absolutely incredible to witness the challenges, the skill, the efforts, all of it. I am forever grateful to have been a visitor.
A.But that is not how it is.
B.It is as much beautiful as cruel.
C.I, years later, did return to this fascinating place.
D.The cycle continues, and you’ re left wondering who to root for.
E.That all your senses will be stimulated is the best way I can describe it.
F.But immediately I stepped foot on the continent, I knew I needed to return.
G.The expedition team made sure we kept our distance and did not scare them.

Call or Email: Which One Should You Use?
Should you call or email? 16 . Phone calls tend to be more personal and collaborative, but they make some people feel anxious. Email can be an efficient way to communicate information, but there can be delays in response time. We’re here to explain when calling is better and when emailing is better.
Instances When Calling is Better
17 , if you send an email. If the matter is urgent, it’s best to pick up the phone. If you have a complex issue to discuss, call. Delay in response can be a problem. Email can get you into a time-consuming back-and-forth, whereas a quick phone call could clear everything up within a few minutes. If you need to discuss a sensitive matter with someone, call them to avoid miscommunications. 18 , because you can’t hear their voice, which can lead to misunderstandings.
Instances When Email is Better
19 , if you have a simple matter to discuss. When you write an email, you have the option of sending it to multiple addresses at one time. Email allows you to think things through as you write. Maybe you need to send a long monthly update to your coworkers. Or, maybe someone has sent you a document and asked for input, and you’ve come up with thorough feedback. 20 .
A.A phone call is the best
B.An email could be the right call
C.It is easier to misread over email
D.It totally depends on the situation
E.It may take a while to get a response
F.It’s a documented record of conversations
G.Email is the right choice in these situations
16.根据空格前的问句“Should you call or email?(你应该打电话还是发邮件?)” 所以,D项“It totally depends on the situation(这完全取决于具体情况)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选D项。
17.根据空格后的条件状语从句“if you send an email(如果你发电子邮件)”可知,空格处的句子应该表明发电子邮件可能会出现的情况,所以,E项“It may take a while to get a response(可能需要一段时间才能得到回应)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。
18.根据空格前的句子“If you need to discuss a sensitive matter with someone, call them to avoid miscommunications.(如果你需要和某人讨论一个敏感的问题,打电话给他们以避免误解。)”和空格后的原因状语从句“because you can't hear their voice, which can lead to misunderstandings(因为你听不到他们的声音,这可能会导致误解)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到发邮件的弊端,所以C项“It is easier to misread over email(通过电子邮件更容易被误读)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选C项。
19.根据该部分的主题句“Instances When Email is Better(更适合使用电子邮件的例子)”和空格后的条件状语从句“if you have a simple matter to discuss(如果你有简单的事要谈)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到适合发邮件,所以B项“An email could be the right call(发封电子邮件可能是正确的选择)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选B项。
20.根据上文的句子“When you write an email, you have the option of sending it to multiple addresses at one time. Email allows you to think things through as you write. Maybe you need to send a long monthly update to your coworkers. Or, maybe someone has sent you a document and asked for input, and you've come up with thorough feedback.(当你写一封电子邮件时,你可以选择一次发送到多个地址。电子邮件可以让你在写作时思考问题。也许你需要每月给你的同事发一份长长的更新。或者,也许有人给你发了一份文件,要求你提供意见,而你已经提出了全面的反馈。)”可知,这些都是适合发送电子邮件的情况。所以G项“Email is the right choice in these situations(在这些情况下,电子邮件是正确的选择)”填入空格处,与上文是顺接关系。故选G项。
【答案】21.G 22.A 23.B 24.F 25.C
21.由上文“Unlike the strong conclusions in physical sciences, psychological research builds a bigger picture through many small studies. (与物理科学中的强烈结论不同,心理学研究是通过许多小型研究来构建一个更大的图景。)”可知,心理学研究是通过累积多个小研究的成果来形成整体理解的。本空应对心理学研究是如何通过长时间和细致的工作来取得成果的进行举例说明。G选项“For example, Eric Kandel spent years studying sea animals to learn how memory works. (例如,埃里克·坎德尔花了数年时间研究海洋动物,以了解记忆的工作原理。)”提供了一个具体的例子,说明心理学研究是如何通过长时间和细致的工作来取得成果的。这与上文的观点相吻合,即通过多个小研究来构建对某一领域的整体理解。故选G。
22.由上文“Similarly, Elizabeth Loftus’s research doubts how accurate witness reports are. Instead of calling it “unreliable,” researchers use terms like “potential unreliability.” (同样,伊丽莎白·洛夫图斯的研究对目击者报告的准确性表示怀疑。研究人员没有称其为“不可靠”,而是使用诸如“可能不可靠”之类的术语。)”可知,心理学研究在表达结论时倾向于使用较为谨慎的措辞,本空应强调这么作的原因。A选项“This indicates that findings might change. (这表明研究结果可能会改变。)”进一步说明了心理学研究结论的不确定性,即研究结果可能会随着新的证据或研究的深入而发生变化。这与上文的观点一致,即心理学研究在表达结论时更注重谨慎和不确定性。故选A。
23.由下文“It encourages them to reflect and analyze, helping them communicate their findings with accuracy. (相反,我教我的学生批判性地思考如何使用它,就像园丁照顾植物一样。)”可知,作者在教学上采取了一种不同于传统禁止某些词汇使用的做法,本空应强调作者的教学方法。B选项“In my classroom, I do not ban the word “prove.” (在我的课堂上,我不禁止使用“证明”这个词。)”直接引出了下文的内容,即作者在教学上对于“证明”这个词的开放态度。故选B。
24.由上文“This approach helps students grasp the complexity of psychological research and develop critical thinking skills. It encourages them to reflect and analyze, helping them communicate their findings with accuracy. (这种方法帮助学生掌握心理学研究的复杂性,并培养他们的批判性思维能力。它鼓励学生进行反思和分析,帮助他们准确地传达自己的发现。)”可知,作者的教学方法有助于学生掌握心理学研究的复杂性,并培养他们的批判性思维能力,本空应继续强调这种做法的好处。F选项“This method also builds appreciation for the depth of psychological inquiry. (这种方法还增强了对心理学探究深度的欣赏。)”进一步强调了这种教学方法的积极作用,即不仅有助于学生掌握知识和技能,还能增强他们对心理学研究的兴趣和欣赏。这与上文的观点相辅相成,符合题意。故选F。
25.由上文“In psychology, “proving” something is like building a symphony. (在心理学中,“证明”某件事就像创作一部交响乐。)”可知,心理学中的“证明”是一个复杂而细致的过程,需要多个元素和部分的协同作用,本空应强调每个部分对于整体的作用。C选项“Each piece of evidence adds to a larger understanding. (每一份证据都增加了对整体的理解。)”与上文的比喻相呼应,即每一份证据就像交响乐中的一个音符,共同构成了对某一问题的整体理解。这与上文的观点一致,即心理学中的“证明”是一个需要累积多个证据和研究的过程。故选C。

【答案】31.E 32.D 33.B 34.A 35.F
31.上文“They are involuntary and unwanted mental ideas or urges that pop into our minds without invitation.(它们是无意识的、不受欢迎的心理想法或冲动,未经邀请就突然出现在我们的脑海中)”解释侵入性想法,E项“它们可以是任何一个人认为与他们的价值观不一致的东西”进一步进行阐释,故选E。
32.上文“Most people know they would never do such things and don’t pay much attention to them.(大多数人都知道他们永远不会做这样的事情,也不会太在意)”提到大多数人不会太在意侵入性想法,结合下文“And they worry that these thoughts will come true or cause them to do something terrible.(他们担心这些想法会成真或导致他们做一些可怕的事情)”可知,也有人担心侵入性想法,故空处应是表示转折关系,D项“然而,有些人会被这些侵入性的想法所困扰”符合语境,故选D。
33.根据上文“Accept and allow the thoughts into your mind.(接受并允许这些想法进入你的大脑)”可知,我们应该接受并允许这些想法,B项“不要试图推开他们”与上文语义一致,B项中“them”指代上文的“thoughts”,故选B。

【答案】36.B 37.A 38.G 39.D 40.E
36.根据前文“Humans sometimes make bad choices and stick with them despite negative consequences. (人类有时会做出错误的选择,并且不顾负面后果坚持下去。)”及下文“But in general bad choices have to do with acting out of emotion and not out of reason. (但一般来说,糟糕的选择是出于情感而不是出于理性。)”可知,人类做出错误选择的原因并不是单一的,与B项“The reasons for that are complex. (原因很复杂。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选B项。
37.根据上文“Narcissists(自恋者) usually won’t admit a mistake because it contradicts their self-image. But the fact is that many of us aren’t narcissistic. (自恋者通常不会承认错误,因为这与他们的自我形象相矛盾。但事实是,我们中的许多人并不自恋。)”及下文“Even when trapped in a bad relationship, we may still stick with it, hoping things will eventually change for the better. (即使陷入一段糟糕的关系中,我们可能仍然坚持下去,希望事情最终会变得更好。)”可知,很多人在承认错误这件事上是有挣扎的,所以即使即使陷入一段糟糕的关系中,我们可能仍然坚持下去,与A项“And we often struggle with this. (我们经常为此而苦苦挣扎。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选A项。
38.根据上文“Considering emotion is important, enthusiasm for something can move us forward, but it can also block our vision. (考虑到情感很重要,对某事的热情可以推动我们前进,但它也会阻碍我们的视野。)”及下文“While relying solely on our “gut feeling” can be helpful, it works best when we use our head, integrating intuitive insights with logical thinking. (虽然仅仅依靠我们的“直觉”可能会有所帮助,但当我们使用我们的头脑,将直觉洞察力与逻辑思维相结合时,它的效果最好。)”可知,我们做决定不能只凭感觉对,还要考虑什么是正确的,与G项“We should consider what’s right, not just what feels right. (我们应该考虑什么是正确的,而不仅仅是感觉正确的。)”上下文一致,符合文意,故选G项。
39.根据上文“Doubling down is generally unwise. We need to acknowledge our errors and be willing to say we’re sorry and apologize (加倍坚持通常是不明智的。我们需要承认我们的错误,并愿意说对不起并道歉。)”及下文“In fact, it’s smarter than denying mistakes. (事实上,这比否认错误更聪明。)”可知,承认错误这件事没有错,与D项“There is nothing wrong with doing this. (这样做没有错。)”上下文一致,承接上文,符合文意,故选D项。
40.根据上文“Recognizing when to cut our losses is crucial, allowing us to pursue new opportunities with confidence. (认识到何时止损至关重要,这能让我们充满信心地去追寻新的机会。)”可知,要及时止损,不要再试图从糟糕的情况中获取好结果,与E项“So stop trying to make lemonade from bad lemons. (所以不要再试图用坏柠檬制作柠檬水了。)”上下文一致,形象地总结要及时止损,符合文意,故选E项。
【答案】41.G 42.D 43.E 44.A 45.B

42.下文“As the minutes taker, your job is to document what is happening at the meeting. This is a written record that covers just the main points. You don’t need an exact accounting of everything that is said.(作为会议记录员,你的工作是记录会议上发生的情况。这是一份书面记录,仅涵盖要点。你不需要对所说的一切进行精确的计算)”指出写会议纪要时要求准确,即不能加入个人创意,D项“你的创意写作技巧必须退居二线。”符合,故选D。
43.上下文“Some of this is boring information to keep track of: meeting names, date and time, action items and decisions made.(其中一些是需要跟踪的无聊信息:会议名称、日期和时间、行动项目和做出的决定。)”
44.下文“With meeting minutes, it’s important to write down who attended the meeting, but also who didn’t, so there is no confusion about who may have discussed or voted on an issue.(在会议纪要中,重要的是写下谁参加了会议,也写下了谁没有参加,这样就不会混淆谁可能对某个问题进行了讨论或投票)”指出要记录下谁无法参加会议,A项“请注意谁无法参加。”
45.上文“While writing informal meeting minutes, you have more flexibility. Think of what your organization needs, and what’s been done in the past. (在撰写非正式会议纪要时,你拥有更大的灵活性。想想你的组织需要什么,以及过去做了什么)”指出撰写非正式会议纪要时你有很大灵活性,可以想想你的组织需要什么,以及过去做了什么,空处也应承接上文,指出如何灵活地撰写非正式会议纪要,B项“然后改进该过程。”符合,故选B。
【答案】46.G 47.D 48.E 49.B 50.C

48.根据该段标题“Save what you can.( 尽你所能保存。)”以及下文“If you have a bunch of overripe bananas, put it in the freezer to make banana bread later.( 如果你有一堆熟透了的香蕉,把它放进冰箱里,以后做香蕉面包。)” Besides, think about how you can creatively save your leftovers.(此外,想想如何创造性地保存剩菜剩饭。)
49.根据上文“So source your food in ways that don't require you to get it from a package.( 所以你可以选择不需要从包装中获取食物的方式。)” 以及下文“Instead of buying oat milk in a non-recyclable container, make it at home and store it in a jar, removing the packaging waste.( 与其购买装在不可回收容器里的燕麦牛奶,不如在家自制并储存在罐子里,去除包装垃圾。)” That means making some of your own food.(那意味着你要自己做一些食物。)
该段下文“Once you start noticing how much trash you produce at home, you' ll start to cut down on trash elsewhere. Bring your own reusable fork to a restaurant that uses single-use plastic tools, Or ask the waiter in a coffee bar to fill up your coffee mug instead of a paper cup.( 一旦你开始注意到你在家里产生了多少垃圾,你就会开始减少在其他地方的垃圾。去使用一次性塑料工具的餐馆时,带上你自己的可重复使用的叉子,或者让咖啡馆的服务员把你的咖啡杯装满,而不是纸杯。)”可知,讲的是开始思考减少在其他地方的垃圾。结合选项C项Look for ways to cut waste outside the home.(寻找减少家庭以外浪费的方法。)
【答案】51.D 52.E 53.C 54.G 55.A
51.下文“ While you may not consciously label them as such, you are familiar with nonverbals that convey judgment: pursed lips, raised eyebrows, crossed arms, tipping head to literally look down upon another. (虽然你可能不会有意识地给他们贴上这样的标签,但你熟悉传达判断的非言语行为:噘起嘴唇、扬起眉毛、交叉双臂、低头俯视他人)”说明虽然你可能不会有意识地给他们贴上这样的标签,但是自己已经被贴上标签了。说明空格处表示的意思是“自己成为了评判的接收者”,因此D项“你也一直处于接收端”概括段意,故选D。
52.上文“But that protection comes at a price. (但这种保护是有代价的)”说明下文要表明的是“代价”的内容,其中,选项E中的“costs”和上文中“comes at a price”的是同义词,因此E项“判断需要创造力、好奇心和信任”符合语境,故选E。
53.上文“Yes, you make mistakes and sometimes behave badly. (是的,你会犯错,有时表现得很糟糕)”以及下文“You grow, learn, and improve. You accomplish and achieve and win. You are valuable and worthy even when you fall short. (你成长、学习和提高。你达到目标。即使你做得不够好,你也是有价值的。)”说明犯错误之后改变了,成长了,所以不要总是活在错误中,而是要超越自己的错误。空格处是承上启下,因此C项“但你要超越你的错误”符合语境,故选C。
54.上文“When you accept your flaws(缺陷) and mistakes and still see yourself as a worthwhile human being in spite of them, you can in turn accept other flawed human beings, too. (当你接受自己的缺点和错误,尽管如此,你仍然认为自己是一个有价值的人,你反过来也可以接受其他有缺陷的人)”说明要接受自己的错误和缺点,善待他人。因此G项“你越喜欢和接受自己,就越不必贬低别人”符合语境,故选G。
55.上文“Judging others creates a false sense of self-worth. If you find yourself doing it, stop. (评判他人会产生一种虚假的自我价值感。如果你发现自己在做,停下来)”说明评判他人是一种不好的事情,如果发现自己做了这样不好的事情,就应该赶紧停下,可能会自责,但是结合下文“But do take a look in the mirror. Where do you need shoring up? It takes some thoughtfulness and work (但一定要照镜子。你需要在哪里支撑?这需要一些深思熟虑和努力)”说明做了虚假评判之后应该采取的正确的措施,而不是自责自已。空格处起到承上启下的关系,因此A项“不要因此而自责”符合语境,故选A。

56.空前“Traveling with kids can be stressful—with all those suitcases and cries of “Are we there yet?”(带着孩子旅行可能会很有压力——带着所有的行李箱和“我们到了吗?”)”说明带着孩子旅行可能会有压力,空后“Involving young children in planning a trip might sound silly, but it’s far more valuable than it seems.(让年幼的孩子参与计划旅行可能听起来很傻,但它比看起来要有价值得多。)”说明带孩子旅行是有价值的,因此空格处应该出现带转折的词,C选项“However, it can also be a highly rewarding activity.(然而,它也可以是一个非常有益的活动。)”
57.空后“That attitude helps parents avoid terrible situations that may ruin the day.(这种态度可以帮助父母避免可能会毁了一天的糟糕情况。)”
58.空格处是本段的主旨句,由空后“If a little one is into dinosaurs, perhaps you’ll want to check out a city’s Natural History Museum. If they love animals, maybe there’s a way to include a visit to a farm or an aquarium (水族馆).(如果孩子喜欢恐龙,也许你会想去城市的自然历史博物馆看看。如果他们喜欢动物,也许有一个方法包括参观农场或水族馆。)”可知,本段主要讲的是在计划带孩子去旅行时,应该要考虑孩子的喜好,G选项“Parents can also play into their kids’ interests when planning a trip.(在计划旅行时,父母也可以考虑孩子的兴趣。)”

【答案】61.A 62.F 63.C 64.B 65.G
61.根据前文“How can you make sure to have great conversations, especially with people you don’t know well? How do you keep a conversation flowing, especially with someone you’ve just met? Your first and most important step is to make that person feel listened to.(你怎样才能确保交谈愉快,尤其是和你不太了解的人?如何让谈话保持流畅,尤其是和刚认识的人?你的第一步也是最重要的一步是让那个人觉得你在倾听。)”和后文“The No.1 way to make someone feel listened to is to actually listen to them.(让别人感到被倾听的首要方法是真正倾听他们。)” 故选A。
62.根据前文“When someone is talking to you about something, especially if what they’re saying doesn’t directly relate to your interests, your mind may want to busy itself with other things.(当有人和你谈论某事时,特别是如果他们所说的与你的兴趣没有直接关系,你的大脑可能会想要忙于其他事情。)”
63.根据前文“Beyond that, using body language can be very useful.(除此之外,使用肢体语言也非常有用。)”和后文“Smile at the other person and nod to let them know you understand the points they’re making.(对对方微笑并点头,让他们知道你理解他们的观点。)”
64.根据前文“You can take it a step further and mirror them, reflecting back their body positioning and posture.(你可以更进一步,镜像他们,反映出他们的身体位置和姿势。)”和后文“If focusing on body language distracts you from listening, then it isn’t worth it, in my opinion.(在我看来,如果专注于肢体语言会分散你倾听的注意力,那就不值得了。)”
65.根据后文“It’s a bit like playing tennis, where the objective is to keep the volley going as long as possible.(这有点像打网球,目标是让截击尽可能长。)”和“If you always respond to what the other person says with just a word or two, you’ re putting too much pressure on them to keep the conversation going.(如果你总是用一两句话来回应对方的话,你就会给他们施加太大的压力,让谈话无法继续下去。)”
1.根据上文的“When others outperform us, should we feel threatened or inspired? Should we fear or respect those who are more capable, more skilled or more successful than us?(当别人比我们表现得更好时,我们应该感到受到威胁还是得到激励?我们应该害怕还是尊敬那些比我们更有能力、更熟练或更成功的人?)”可知,此处就别人比我们表现更好时,我们会做出怎样的回应的问题,结合下文讲述的中美两国对该问题的不同回应可知,此空需要一个能够引出下文的内容,F选项“Different responses can lead to constructive or destructive reactions and actions.(不同的反应可以导致建设性或破坏性的回应和行为。)”回应了上文的问题,同时引出下文讲述的内容,符合语境。故选F项。

S. and China tell stories about peers who perform better than others.(一项由布朗大学的教育心理学家进行的研究探讨了美国和中国的幼儿园儿童如何讲述关于比其他同龄人表现更好的同伴的故事。)”可知,此处提到了布朗大学的一项研究,结合下文的“Chinese children often expressed respect for high achievers and a desire to imitate their success. In contrast, U. S. children’s stories typically focused on negative reactions, including envy and being left out.
3.根据上文的“In American culture, the “self” is defined by qualities, and abilities, which are largely fixed. Thus, while the achievement of others reflects their high ability, it becomes a mirror to reveal one’s own lack of ability.(在美国文化中,“自我”是由那些大多固定不变的品质和能力所定义的。因此,虽然他人的成就反映了他们高水平的能力,但这也成为了一面镜子,映照出自己能力的不足。)”可知,此处阐述了美国文化对“自我”的定义以及因此带来的影响,结合下文的“As a result, Chinese children tend to view others’ achievements not as signs of natural superiority, but as opportunities for learning and self-improvement.(因此,中国儿童倾向于将他人的成就视为学习和自我提升的机会,而不是自然优越性的标志。)”

S., such phenomena are less common as they can be seen as threats to self-esteem.(在中国,学生的整体表现可能会被公开认可,以鼓励成功并激励进一步的改进。
5.根据下文的“These narratives, in other words, determine whether we feel threatened or inspired, fearful or respectful, annoyed or eager to copy others.(换句话说,这些叙述决定了我们是感到受到威胁还是得到激励,是感到恐惧还是尊敬,是感到恼怒还是渴望模仿他人。)”
6.由上文“Have you ever noticed that some people seem to climb the career ladder (梯子) effortlessly, while others struggle to get their foot on the first step? (你有没有注意到,有些人似乎能毫不费力地爬上事业的阶梯,而另一些人却很难迈出第一步?)”和下文“Often, it’s about the Matthew Effect: the idea that initial success can create a snowball effect, making future success easier to achieve. (往往与马太效应有关:即初始的成功能产生一种滚雪球效应,使得未来的成功更容易实现。)”可知,上文提到有些人事业顺利,而有些人事业艰难。下文解释了这种现象的原因。本空应承上启下,强调这种现象的原因,B选项“It’s not always about talent or hard work—though both are vital. (这并不总是关于天赋或努力工作——尽管这两点都很重要。)”指出事业成功并不总是关于天赋或努力工作,且指出这两点虽然重要但并不是决定性因素,能够引出下文对事业成功因素的进一步说明,起到承上启下的作用。故选B。
7.由上文“Understanding how it works can help you make use of it to your advantage. (了解它的工作原理可以帮助你利用它来发挥自己的优势。)”和下文“Think of yourself as a young designer who lands a high-profile client early on. That one project, if handled well, opens the door to bigger opportunities, referrals and a growing collection of impressive work. (把自己想象成一个年轻的设计师,很早就找到了一个备受瞩目的客户。如果处理得当,这个项目将为更大的机会、推荐和越来越多的令人印象深刻的作品打开大门。)”可知,上文提出了解马太效应的工作原理,下文描述了职业生涯中的第一次重大突破对于未来的好处。本空应强调初次的重大突破对后续职业生涯的积极影响,E选项“The first big break in your career often sets the stage for everything that follows. (你职业生涯中的第一次重大突破往往为接下来的一切奠定了基础。)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选E。
8.由上文“Think of yourself as a young designer who lands a high-profile client early on. That one project, if handled well, opens the door to bigger opportunities, referrals and a growing collection of impressive work. (把自己想象成一个年轻的设计师,很早就找到了一个备受瞩目的客户。如果处理得当,这个项目将为更大的机会、推荐和越来越多的令人印象深刻的作品打开大门。)”提到处理好一个项目可以带来更多机会。本空应对获得更多机会的体现进行具体的解释,C选项“More clients want to work with you when you’re already successful. (当你已经成功时,更多的客户想和你合作。)”进一步说明了成功会吸引更多客户,能承接上文,符合题意。故选C。
9.由上文“Visibility is crucial to the Matthew Effect. (可见性对马太效应至关重要。)”提出可见性对马太效应很重要。本空应进一步解释为什么可见性很重要。D选项“If people don’t know about your achievements, it’s hard to obtain more success. (如果人们不知道你的成就,就很难获得更多的成功。)”进一步解释了为什么可见性很重要,即如果人们不知道你的成就,就很难获得更多的成功,能承接上文,符合题意。故选D。
10.由上文“Another key driver of the Matthew Effect is the power of networks. People with strong professional networks are often exposed to more opportunities than those with limited connections. Psychologically, people tend to associate success with competence. (马太效应的另一个关键驱动力是网络的力量。拥有强大职业网络的人往往比那些关系有限的人有更多的机会。从心理上讲,人们倾向于将成功与能力联系起来。)”和下文“This is why networking isn’t just about meeting people—it’s about creating meaningful relationships that lead to trust and mutual (相互的) benefit. (这就是为什么建立人脉不仅仅是关于认识人——它是关于建立有意义的关系,从而导致信任和互惠。)”可知,这一段讨论的是人脉网络的力量和重要性。本空应解释建立人脉的好处。G选项“If you’re recommended by someone respected in your field, the recommendation carries weight. (如果你被你所在领域受人尊敬的人推荐,那么这个推荐就很有分量。)”进一步说明了得到领域内权威人士推荐(即建立人脉)对成功的重要性。故选G。
【答案】11.A 12.D 13.C 74.B 15.F
11.前文“But as my friend told me all the creative methods people are adopting to reduce material desires or repurpose items or resist the urge to constantly acquire new things, I realized that, minimalism begins with something deeper. (但是,正如我的朋友告诉我的那样,人们采用的所有创造性方法都是为了减少物质欲望,改变物品的用途,或者抵制不断获得新事物的冲动,我意识到,极简主义始于更深层次的东西)”提到极简主义始于更深层次的东西,因此A项“It commences with a willingness to alter our mindset. (它始于改变我们心态的意愿)”符合语境,解释了更深层次的东西是什么,承接前文,其中的It指代前文的minimalism。故选A。
12.前文“This struck me as I read a cover story on urban development. On the surface, it’s about more and more cities deciding to adopt green building standards as a necessary measure for sustainable growth. (当我读到一篇关于城市发展的封面故事时,这让我很震惊。从表面上看,越来越多的城市决定采用绿色建筑标准作为可持续发展的必要措施)”提到城市发展的表层现象,后文“That is always going to be tough. But in recent years, cities have recognized that the traditional ways of assessing progress, while not necessarily incorrect, were limited. (这总是很困难的。但近年来,各城市已经认识到,评估进步的传统方法虽然不一定不正确,但也有局限性)”提到传统评估进步的方式有局限,因此D项“At its heart, it exposes a more fundamental issue: how we assess the value of urban progress. (在其核心,它暴露了一个更根本的问题:我们如何评估城市进步的价值)”符合语境,指出城市发展的根本问题在于如何评估进步的价值,承前启后。故选D。
13.前文“While they measured one aspect of development well, they failed to take into account a broad range of factors, such as environmental impact, community well-being, and cultural richness that were equally vital to the overall success and prosperity of a city. (虽然他们很好地衡量了发展的一个方面,但他们没有考虑到更广泛的因素,如环境影响、社区福祉和文化丰富性,这些因素对城市的整体成功和繁荣同样至关重要)”指出传统评估方式没考虑很多重要因素,因此C项“In essence, they excluded numerous exceptional opportunities without even noticing. (本质上,他们甚至没有注意到就排除了许多非凡的机会)”符合语境,进一步说明传统方式的弊端,承接前文。故选C。
14.后文“Some argue that abandoning strict building codes is a mistake. (一些人认为,放弃严格的建筑规范是一个错误)”提到放弃严格建筑规范的错误,因此B项“There have inevitably been some missteps throughout this journey. (在这段旅程中不可避免地会有一些失误)”符合语境,说明城市规划改变过程中存在问题,引出后文。故选B。
15.前文“Transportation today illustrates how easily we can get stuck in the conventional mindset. (今天的交通说明了我们是多么容易陷入传统思维)”从交通方面说明我们容易陷入传统思维,后文“That can be an urban planner striving to be more innovative in designing public spaces. Or it can be a minimalist vlogger urging us all to think differently about how we can create a more harmonious and sustainable environment. (这可以是一个城市规划师在设计公共空间时力求更创新。也可以是一个极简主义的视频博主,敦促我们从不同的角度思考如何创造一个更和谐、更可持续的环境)”举例说明不同的人努力创新,因此F项“Conversely, the world is perpetually demanding that we act with greater foresight, greater responsibility, and a broader perspective. (相反,世界永远要求我们以更大的远见、更大的责任感和更广阔的视角行事)”符合语境,总的指出要去创新,与前文形成转折,又引出后文的例子。故选F。
B.All of that is good on the one hand.
C.You may feel lost and may have low confidence.
D.Stress coming from loneliness causes physical breakdown.
E.Since the 1950s, people have been less and less invested in other people.
F.People go to faraway colleges and only get in touch with families on screen.
G.A good way is to find an activity around other people where you are comfortable.
【答案】16.A 17.E 18.B 19.D 20.G
16.由上文“Loneliness is the sense that “I am less connected to other people than I want to be”.孤独是一种“我和别人的联系比我想要的少”的感觉)”可知,这里在具体描述孤独是一种怎样的状态,而A项It’s a very subjective experience.(这是一种非常主观的体验)符合语境,其中It指代上文的 Loneliness, subjective与上文I want to be对应,所以本句有承上作用。故选A项。
17.由下文“In some studies, as many as, 60% of people will say that they feel lonely much of the time. (在一些研究中,多达60%的人会说他们大部分时间都感到孤独)”可知,这里讲很多人会感觉到孤独,而E项Since the 1950s, people have been less and less invested in other people.(自20世纪50年代以来,人们对他人的投入的沟通时间越来越少)符合语境,与下句构成因果关系,所以有启下作用。故选E项。
18.由上文“There are many factors that are responsible for that. Loneliness was on the rise from the 1950s in part because of the rise of private care. We’ve become a much more mobile society where the networks of family and friends get loose as people move for jobs and other kinds of opportunities like education.(造成这种情况的因素有很多。自20世纪50年代以来,孤独感呈上升趋势,部分原因是私人护理的兴起。我们已经成为一个流动性更强的社会,随着人们为工作和教育等其他机会而流动,家人和朋友的网络变得松散)”可知,这里在讲造成孤独的因素。而B项All of that is good on the one hand.(一方面,这一切都很好)符合语境,that指代上文列举的具体情况, 本句也与but引导的后文形成转折关系。故选B项。
19.由上文“Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health. (研究发现孤独对我们的健康是危险的)”可知,孤独对我们的健康是危险的,而D项Stress coming from loneliness causes physical breakdown.(孤独带来的压力会导致身体崩溃)符合语境,其中physical breakdown与上文dangerous to our health对应,所以本句有承上作用。故选D项。
20.由上文“The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other people.(我们可以做出的选择是投资于我们与他人的关系,以保持我们的健康)”可知,这里讲我们可以投资于我们与他人的关系来保持我们的健康,而G项A good way is to find an activity around other people where you are comfortable.(一个好方法是在别人周围找一个你觉得舒服的活动)符合语境,本句为改善我们与他人的关系的具体建议,所以有承上作用。故选G项。
【答案】21.B 22.A 23.G 24.D 25.E
21.根据前文“Humans sometimes make bad choices and stick with them despite negative consequences.
22.根据上文“Narcissists(自恋者) usually won’t admit a mistake because it contradicts their self-image.
23.根据上文“Considering emotion is important, enthusiasm for something can move us forward, but it can also block our vision.
24.根据上文“Doubling down is generally unwise.
25.根据上文“Recognizing when to cut our losses is crucial, allowing us to pursue new opportunities with confidence. (认识到何时止损至关重要,这能让我们充满信心地去追寻新的机会。)”可知,要及时止损,不要再试图从糟糕的情况中获取好结果,与E项“So stop trying to make lemonade from bad lemons. (所以不要再试图用坏柠檬制作柠檬水了。)”上下文一致,形象地总结要及时止损,符合文意,故选E项。

【答案】6.A 7.E 8.C 9.G 10.F
6.上文“Intuition (直觉力) is a survival skill that assists you in avoiding danger and making new discoveries. Tuning into your intuition can enable you to understand yourself better. (直觉是一种生存技能,它能帮助你避开危险,做出新的发现。调整你的直觉可以让你更好地了解自己。)”告诉我们什么是直觉,下文“Intuition is a quiet voice within your mind that tells you when something is right or wrong. (直觉是你头脑中一个安静的声音,它告诉你什么时候是对的,什么时候是错的。)”介绍直觉的作用,A选项“How does your intuition help you?”(你的直觉是如何帮助你的?) 故选A项。
7.上文“Intuition occurs when your brain compares what’s going on around you with experiences stored in your memories.”(当你的大脑将你周围发生的事情与储存在记忆中的经历进行比较时,直觉就会产生。)说明直觉产生的原理,E选项“It creates a feeling so fast that you often don’t even notice it.”(它产生的感觉如此之快,以至于你经常甚至没有注意到它。)承接上文,说明直觉产生的感觉非常快速,以至于人们常常没有意识到,并解释了下文“This explains why you occasionally make speedy decisions that appear from nowhere. (这就解释了为什么你偶尔会莫名其妙地做出快速的决定。)”中“我们偶尔会莫名其妙地做出快速的决定”这一现象,上下文语意衔接自然。故选E项。
8.下文“Listening to your intuition and gut feelings involves trusting your judgement. This helps you by building confidence, which makes it easier to face challenges and discover what you’re good at. (倾听你的直觉和直觉感受需要相信你的判断。这有助于你建立自信,让你更容易面对挑战,发现你擅长什么)”说明倾听直觉的好处,C选项“It can also help you discover what you’re good at. (它也可以帮助你发现你擅长什么。)”与下文内容相呼应,都提到了直觉可以帮助发现自己擅长的事情;且C选项中“also”表示并列关系,与第二段中观点“直觉是你头脑中一个安静的声音,它告诉你什么时候是对的,什么时候是错的。”并列,说明直觉除了可以告诉我们对与错,还可以帮助我们发现自己擅长的事情。故选C项。
9.下文“Therefore, only take a chance on things that are safe and familiar, like choosing fun ingredients for a cake. (因此,只去尝试那些安全且熟悉的事情,比如为蛋糕选择有趣的配料。)”建议人们只尝试那些安全且熟悉的事情,G选项“However, like any decision you make, your intuition won’t always be right. (然而,就像你做出的任何决定一样,你的直觉并不总是正确的。)”与下文因果关系,指出因为直觉并不总是正确的,所以建议要谨慎抉择,尝试那些安全且熟悉的事情,上下文语意衔接自然。故选G项。
10.上文“Try noticing how your body behaves when you’ re delighted, like going on holiday or seeing friends. This can help guide you in making decisions. (试着注意当你高兴时,比如去度假或见朋友时,你的身体是如何表现的。这可以帮助你做出决定。)”建议人们注意自己身体在不同情境下的反应,以指导决策,F选项“Similarly, focus on how you think when you’ve made a bad choice. (同样地,当你做出错误选择时,关注你是怎么想的。)”与上文构成并列关系,都建议人们要注意自己的身体反应和想法,只是情境不同,一个是高兴时,一个是做出错误选择时。故选F项。
【答案】11.A 12.D 13.C 14.G 15.F
11.上文“But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else.(但当我妻子和我分享人们想出的各种方法来避免使用塑料、重复使用衣服或控制购买我们并不真正需要的东西的欲望时,我意识到,零浪费始于其他的东西。)” 下文“And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.(在很多方面,第一步,也就是愿意以不同的方式做事,可能是最难的一步。)” 故选A。
12.上文“Ostensibly, it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude.(表面上,这是关于越来越多的大学同意放弃将标准化考试作为学生能力的必要衡量标准。)”
13.上文“While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success.(虽然他们很好地识别出了一种类型的学生,但他们并没有考虑到一系列对成就和成功同样重要的经验、技能和品质。)”
14.上文“They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual.(他们决心尽自己所能看到学生的全貌。)” 下文“Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake.(有些人认为取消强制性标准化考试是个错误。)”
15.下文“That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.(这可能是一位招生官想要更有思考地扩展她所在学校提供的福利。或者可能是一位零浪费博主要求我们所有人以不同的方式思考我们如何为世界更大的平衡做出贡献。)”中的“thinking differently”与选项F中的“think ever larger”相呼应,进一步说明了我们需要改变思维方式,以更广阔的视野来看待问题。选项F“另一方面,世界不断地要求我们更加善良、更加团结,思考得更广泛”符合语境。故选F。

22.根据后文“It showcases your ability to manage your time effectively and handle tasks on your own. Besides, securing glowing recommendations from a remote employer highlights skills you gained through remote work.(它展示了你有效管理时间和独立处理任务的能力。此外,从远程雇主那里获得热情洋溢的推荐信可以突出你通过远程工作获得的技能)”可知,本段主要说明了远程工作可以增加工作经验,故G选项“至于建立专业形象,远程工作确实可以推销你的经验”符合语境,故选G。

Passage 1
To put into words my time in Antarctica and South Georgia is nearly impossible.
【答案】1.F 2.E 3.B 4.D 5.G
