Dragging out of bed on a damp October morning, I look out of the window of my room in the Foreign Students’ Building of Sichuan University in Chengdu. As usual, the sky outside is grey, and beyond, I can see a row of wutong trees and the Fuhe River. There, a cormorant (鱼鹰) fisherman is trying his luck in the dark water. His birds, their great black wings flapping, have rings around their necks. When they catch a fish too big to swallow, they offer it to the fisherman, who drops it into his basket, and gives them a smaller one in exchange. I watch, attracted by the little event that marks my daily life here.
When the fisherman has floated past, I go off in search of breakfast. Students and lecturers on bicycles ride past me, ringing their bells. Laundry and birdcages hang on the balconies of the apartment blocks. Everything is softened by the gentle touch of the Sichuan mist. The campus is an island of quietness in a city where the taxis honk their horns (鸣笛) non-stop and the street sellers shout and talk.
Guided by my nose, I find a snack stand just behind the university, where an elderly couple makes guo kui, flatbreads filled with cut-up pork, spring onion, and Sichuan pepper. The woman kneads dough (揉面) and rolls it into balls on an oiled wooden board, spreads over each ball into a long tongue of pastry with a little spicy seasoned pork. She then rolls it up, flattens it into a round, and passes it to her husband. He bakes them at the side of the grill. Eaten hot, they are tasty, chewy, and mouthwatering, with the Sichuan pepper making your lips dance and sting. Could there be anything more delicious for breakfast on a damp autumn day?
4. What fascinates the author on the damp October morning?
A. A grey sky. B. A row of wutong trees. C. A lucky event. D. A fishing scene.
5. What does the author suggest about the outside of the campus?

A planarian (扁形虫) is an inch-long worm often found in rivers and ponds worldwide. Though it is nothing special to look at, it has a hidden talent that has made it famous. It can regrow its body parts better than almost any other animal on Earth. If its head, tail, or both are removed, the remaining middle section can regrow into a full worm within weeks. Meanwhile, the severed (被切断的) head and the lonesome tail will also each generate a full-sized new worm, so where you started with one worm, you’ll now have three which are genetically identical to the provider.
Two biologists at Tufts University, curious to learn how this little worm remembers things, did an experiment. Michael Levin and Tal Shomrat know that planarians don’t like light. In the dark, the worms can hide from predators (天敌), feel safe and secretly gather food.
They wanted to implant a memory about light in their laboratory worms. To do that, they placed a delicious liver snack on a well-lit plate, and rewarded the worms who went close and punished them if they sought the safety of the dark. So, gradually, their worms began to trust the light, and approached it more quickly.
Then, they cut off their heads. But in a couple of weeks, the severed worms had new heads. Levin and Shomrat wondered if those new heads would keep their old memories.
According to National Geographic’s account, these worms with new heads remembered where the light spot was, that it was safe, and that food could be found there. The worms’ memories were just as accurate as those worms who had never lost their heads.
How did the worms do it? “We have no idea.” Michael Levin told National Geographic. Since these animals were briefly brainless after their being severed, he says, “What we do know is that memory can be stored outside the brain — probably in other body cells — so that memories can get imprinted onto the new brain as it regenerates.”
8. What amazes the biologists about planarians?
A. Their ability to reproduce. B. Their living habits in water.
C. Their identical look to each other. D. Their complex body shape.
9. What was the purpose of the experiment conducted on the planarians?
A. To measure their regeneration ability. B. To study their response to light.
C To explore how they memorize information. D. To observe their feeding habits.
10. How did the researchers conduct the experiment?
A. By treating planarians to food put in bright areas.
B. By encouraging planarians to stay out of danger.
C. By placing planarians in complete darkness.
D. By exposing planarians to various predators.
11. What did the researchers find about planarians in the experiment?
A. They had better memories after losing head. B. They kept memories beyond the brain.
C. They lost their ability to detect light. D. They rewrote some old memories.
D
The Semmelweis effect refers to the tendency to automatically reject new information or knowledge because it contradicts current thinking or beliefs. This is often seen in science and academics when a new theory is put forward that most people don’t want to accept immediately. It is named after Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865), who is now considered a father of handwashing and used to work in the Viennese general hospital.
Imagine the hospital in the 1840s. It was the biggest medical institution in the Austro-Hungarian capital, a center of European science, where doctors not only cared for patients, but also performed autopsies (解剖) to learn more about the human body and trained students. Therefore, it came as a surprise to Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, an assistant physician in the maternity department (妇产科), that almost every third woman died of childbed fever while giving birth. At times, the young doctor was terrified to learn that in his department, where doctors and medical students worked, the death rate was much higher than in the second department, where midwife (助产土) students were trained. After many observations, he figured out that doctors and students working on dead bodies and other patients were spreading bacteria to women in childbirth.
When Semmelweis ordered fellow doctors to not only wash their hands, but disinfect them and their instruments before seeing patients, the death rate dropped to a record low at the time.
Despite his clear and well documented evidence, Semmelweis’s efforts to introduce hand washing and disinfecting after every treatment, received little support from his colleagues. At the time, the popular medical theory held that diseases were spread by the bad air caused by rotten matter. Semmelweis’ discoveries hit the self-image of physicians at a sensitive point. A doctor as the author of death and illness instead of a lifesaver was an unacceptable idea that most did not want to accept.
It took generations of doctors to adopt Semmelweis’ measures. This shows that in the struggle for truth, emotions play a central role in addition to objective evidence. In science philosophy, the expression “Semmelweis effect” describes the knee-jerk (下意识的) reaction to reject an innovation in advance.
12. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. The midwife students did better than the doctors.
B. Midwife students had no access to dead bodies.
C. The training of midwives was very successful.
D. Young mothers had higher risks of dying.
13. What does the underlined word “author” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Writer. B. Founder. C. Suspect. D. Producer.
14. Why did Semmelweis’s colleagues initially disapprove of his finding?
A. They were uncertain about their mistakes. B. They were better doctors than Ignaz.
C. It contradicted the popular theory. D. It lacked clear objective evidence.
15. What is the best title for the article?
A. Semmelweis Effect: when facts beat beliefs. B. Semmelweis Effect: when beliefs beat facts.
C. Hand Washing: a revolutionary discovery. D. Hand Washing: an ignored practice.

My family hadn’t done anything different for years. So when my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration at her farm last month, I was so excited that I decided to make an extra-special treat.
“Yummy!” my little sister said, stealing a mini marshmallow (棉花糖).
“That’s enough, Indi!” I said. “I need those for my lambs!” “I didn’t know lambs liked marshmallows.” She giggled. I laughed too. “I’m not feeding them to the lambs. I’m making lamb decorations for my cupcakes.”
“I want to help!” she said.
“Me too!” said my brother Tex.
“OK.” I said. “I guess you two can decorate your own.”
“Okey!” said my dad. “The picnic goes from twelve to three. We’d better get a move on!”
However, things didn’t go smoothly. First, we had to wait for Tex to find his shoes. Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom forgot her wallet. Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen’s house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Indi to use the restroom. After that, my parents decided it’d be quicker to take a side road as a shortcut.
But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! My mom kept exclaiming (惊叹) about the beautiful scenery along the way, while I was in no mood to appreciate it. It seemed that we drove forever on a winding road, and just when we were in the very middle of absolutely nowhere, our car started making a strange noise.
“Sorry,” said my mom. “We’re going to have to pull over and call roadside service.
“Nooo!” I said. “We’re already late.”
“Don’t worry,” said my dad. “I’m sure help will arrive soon.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Unfortunately, the roadside-service truck won’t arrive until three o’clock.

C
C. To explore how they memorize information.
A 9. C 10. A 11. B

B 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中“Imagine the hospital in the 1840s. It was the biggest medical institution in the Austro-Hungarian capital, a center of European science, where doctors not only cared for patients, but also performed autopsies (解剖) to learn more about the human body and trained students.(想象一下19世纪40年代的医院。它是奥匈帝国首都最大的医疗机构,是欧洲科学的中心,医生们不仅照顾病人,还进行尸检,以了解更多关于人体的知识,并培训学生)”和“At times, the young doctor was terrified to learn that in his department, where doctors and medical students worked, the death rate was much higher than in the second department, where midwife (助产土) students were trained. After many observations, he figured out that doctors and students working on dead bodies and other patients were spreading bacteria to women in childbirth.(有时,这位年轻的医生惊恐地发现,在他所在的有医生和医学生工作的科室,死亡率比第二个有助产士学生接受培训的科室要高得多。经过多次观察,他发现处理尸体和其他病人的医生和学生正在将细菌传播给分娩的妇女)”可知,有医生和医学生工作的科室死亡率高,而助产士学生所在科室死亡率低,因为医生和医学生会接触尸体,会传播细菌导致产妇死亡。由此推知,助产士学生接触不到尸体,所以一般不会传播导致产妇死亡的细菌。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“A doctor as the author of death and illness instead of a lifesaver was an unacceptable idea that most did not want to accept. (医生成为死亡和疾病的……而不是救命者,这是一个大多数人都不愿接受的不可接受的想法)”和前文提到医生因不洗手将细菌传播给产妇导致死亡可知,这里说医生是死亡和疾病的制造者。划线词author意为“制造者”,与producer同义。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Despite his clear and well documented evidence, Semmelweis’s efforts to introduce hand washing and disinfecting after every treatment, received little support from his colleagues. At the time, the popular medical theory held that diseases were spread by the bad air caused by rotten matter. (尽管塞麦尔维斯有明确且记录详实的证据,但他在每次治疗后引入洗手和消毒措施的努力几乎没有得到同事们的支持。当时,流行的医学理论认为疾病是由腐烂物质产生的污浊空气传播的)”可知,他的同事最初不认可他的发现是因为这与当时流行的理论相矛盾。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其结合文章第一段中“The Semmelweis effect refers to the tendency to automatically reject new information or knowledge because it contradicts current thinking or beliefs. This is often seen in science and academics when a new theory is put forward that most people don’t want to accept immediately.(塞麦尔维斯效应指的是由于新信息或知识与当前的思维或信念相矛盾,人们会自动拒绝新信息或知识。

“during ___1___ time it was introduced to compile (编撰) and print elan genealogies (家谱)”是一个非限定性定语从句,修饰先行词the early Yuan Dynasty,关系词将其代入从句作介词during后宾语,用关系代词which。故填which。
故填in。
故填is taken。
“(preserve)”作“is then placed into a locked box”的目的,应用动词不定式作目的状语。故填to preserve。
decrease(减少)是谓语动词,与主语the number of craftspeople之间是主动关系,结合时间状语“so far”可知,应用现在完成时态,the number of craftspeople作主语,助动词用has。故填has decreased。
“___9___ not protected”是条件状语从句,完整形式是“If it is not protected”,当从句中有“it+be”动词时,可将其省略,保留If not protected。故填If。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Unfortunately, the roadside-service truck won’t arrive until three o’clock.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But as we sat down for picnic, cool things started happening — butterflies!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Unfortunately, the roadside-service truck won’t arrive until three o’clock. By then, the picnic would be over. I felt so disappointed and angry. I had worked so hard on those cupcake decorations. My siblings were also upset, and they started to bicker with each other. My parents tried to calm us down, saying that we could still have a good time right where we were. We got out of the car and stretched our legs. There was a small meadow nearby with wildflowers. We walked over to it and sat down. My mom spread out a blanket, and we took out the cupcakes.
But as we sat down for picnic, cool things started happening — butterflies! Dozens of colorful butterflies fluttered around us, landing on the wildflowers and even on our cupcakes. Indi and Tex were delighted, chasing the butterflies around the meadow. Then, we heard the sound of bleating. A small flock of lambs appeared at the edge of the meadow. They were so cute, with their fluffy wool and wobbly legs. I fed them some of the extra marshmallows. Despite missing the picnic at Aunt Jen’s, this turned out to be the most memorable day. We had a wonderful time right there on the side road, surrounded by nature’s beauty.
