Tea, High Tea and Afternoon Tea
Drinking tea has been popular in the UK for long and is seen as part of its culture. They have tea the drink, tea the meal, afternoon tea and high tea.
Tea the drink
Having tea the drink, the British often add other plants like fruit and mint(薄荷)to the teas.
Tea the meal
On the other hand, tea the meal has tea the drink as an important part, but mainly refers to social(社交的)and family get-together. At first tea the meal became popular in England, and later spread to other English speaking countries.
Afternoon tea (or Low tea)
Afternoon tea is a light meal the British eat at 4:00 pm. Traditionally, they have tea with milk and sugar, together with different kinds of sandwiches (with egg, tuna, ham, and cucumber) and cakes. Usually, the tea and food would be put on a low table.
Nowadays, afternoon tea is no longer an everyday event. It is more likely to be seen in a hotel, or tea shop.
High tea
High tea comes from the meal that the working class eat at the “high” (main) table. It refers to an early evening meal, usually between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. It would take the place of both afternoon tea and their evening meal.
In recent years, some people use “high tea” as a word for exquisite(精致)afternoon tea. Actually, such usage(用法)is wrong. High tea is not the same as afternoon tea.
