Growing up, I realized I wasn't as talkative as others within large groups of people. Parties were a mixed experience for me — I really wanted to be part of them, but usually spent the night waiting for it to end. I saw others getting everyone’s attention. I felt less confident.
They say confidence comes with time. But eight years into my HR (human resources) career (职业), I still found myself staying out of the limelight (公众注意中心).
And then a colleague asked me if I was an introvert “No...?” I replied.
I thought introverts were strange, and they didn’t even like people. That was certainly not me. I’d always liked people; I found them fascinating. When I was with my closest friends, I was quite talkative.
Then he explained to me that introverts don’t know what to do when they’re around other people and need alone time to recharge.
Extroverts are the opposite.
And that was it. Hearing the two simple statements, I felt like over three decades of shame had been lifted off my shoulders.
I learned to accept my introverted nature and focused on what I enjoyed. As I began to connect with people one-on-one, I found it very meaningful. This encouraged me to explore how I could use my introversion to help others.
Finally, I started an online business called Career Off Script, where I focus on helping young professionals who are feeling lost and unhappy. I work with them one-on-one to discover their unique superpowers, strengths. So they, too, can appreciate their uniqueness and find their own success.

C. She had become talkative after working for eight years.
D. She had misunderstandings of what an introvert is like.
6. What effect did the author’s colleague’s words have on her?
A. She looked at herself positively. B. She decided to give up her HR career.
C. She developed an interest in people. D. She realized where her weaknesses lay.
7. What does the author mainly help people do by running Career Off Script?
A. Become extroverts. B. Make career choices.
C. Discover their strengths. D. Establish long friendships.

Seahorses are small, thin fish. They’re called “seahorses” because they look a bit like horses. Seahorses aren’t great swimmers. There are over 40 different kinds of seahorses. Many kinds of them are threatened.
On July 18, 2020, Australian scientists released (释放) hundreds of baby White’s seahorses into the wild. These seahorses were named the second most endangered kind of seahorse in the world.
To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant male seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the aquarium (水族馆) at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS).
After the babies were born, the scientists kept them at the aquarium for five months, feeding the baby seahorses tiny shrimp (small shellfish) to help them grow strong. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, “They don’t have a stomach, so they have to eat continuously.”
About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” for them. The hotels looked a little like cages (笼子), and provided a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that could help provide food for the seahorses.
The scientists have released seahorses into the area five times, but this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released. The researchers say about 90% of them survived. The researchers put tiny tags (标签) under the skin of many of the seahorses to help track them in the future.
The scientists are hoping that the young seahorses will grow and reproduce in large numbers. Brett Fenton, who works for SIMS, says, “We have high expectations that we’ll see the animals do well over the next 12months.”
8. What do we know about White’s seahorses?
A. They are facing threats. B. They are good swimmers.
C. They are found worldwide. D. They are extinct in the world.
9. What did the scientists do to help the young seahorses survive?
A. Place tiny tags under their skin. B. Cover their cages with sea grass.
C. Feed tiny shrimp to them monthly. D. Prepare underwater habitats for them.
10. What made the seahorse release unique?
A. The timing of the release. B. The number of seahorses released.
C. The location of the release. D. The survival rate of pregnant seahorses.
11. How does Brett Fenton sound in the last paragraph?
A. Curious. B. Confident. C. Confused. D. Concerned.

Last week, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres coined a new term. The time of global warming has ended, he announced, and the time of “global boiling” has arrived.
You can see why he said it. July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heatwaves are damaging the world’s third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead.
But critics have strongly disagreed with the phrase. At one level, “global boiling” is clearly an overstatement, but “global warming” is now far too weak a description. Many climate scientists have pushed for the term “global heating” to be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enough attention. That’s because many of us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with our own eyes.
But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and related events have struck many countries. Australia’s Black Summer brought wildfires that burned an area the size of the United Kingdom. Germany suffered serious flooding in 2021. The 2022 flood in Pakistan flooded large parts of the country. China has seen both droughts and floods. Terrible droughts have hit the Horn of Africa for many years. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.
Critics of climate action often complain about what they see as the overuse of “crisis talk”. If everything is a crisis, nothing is a crisis.
When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he’s hoping is to make people listen — and act — now we can see what climate change looks like.
Are there better phrases to describe this? Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: can you think up a brief, correct phrase to cover worsening local- and regional-scale (区域级的) droughts, fires, typhoons and floods; damage to crops and food safety; water shortages; existential threats to coral reefs and low-lying communities? You can see how hard it is.
12. What made Guterres use the phrase “global boiling”?
A. The reviews from critics.
B. The new scientific findings.
C. The present serious situation.
D. The future course of climate change.
13. Why did such phrases as “climate crisis” fail to attract our attention?
A. None of these phrases reflect the truth.
B. Fewer crises have happened in recent years.
C. Many phrases haven’t been mentioned publicly.
D. Certain climate disasters haven’t happened to us.
14. What does the author try to say by using “But that is changing”?
A. But climate crises are worsening.
B. But several crises will be solved.
C. But people will face food shortages.
D. But people are taking effective measures.
15. What does the author think of Guterres’ saying “global boiling”?
A. It is beyond reality. B. It is just to scare people.
C. It is reasonably acceptable. D. It is just to comfort the public

Josh was a young boy who loved playing video games. He had a group of friends with whom he played online, and they made a great team. They used headsets (耳机) to talk to each other while playing games together, and they did this almost every day.
One Sunday afternoon, Josh’s mom, Andrea, approached him with a special request. She asked if he could help her make leche flan (焦糖布丁), which was Josh’s favorite dessert (甜点). His mom had been working very hard lately, but she always tried to spend more time with him. Josh wanted to play games with his friends because they hoped to do well in matches to compete for prizes. He finally refused his mom’s request.
A week later, Josh’s team lost many of their matches. Josh was very sad. This meant they wouldn’t be able to take part in the upcoming final. He wished he had spent more time playing games with his friends.
One evening, he came home and his mom wasn’t in. He texted her and found out she was in the hospital because she had fainted at work. She said she was safe and asked Josh to pick her up later at night.
Josh was at a loss. He realized that his mom was overworking herself. He wanted to express his feelings without just saying sorry, but he wasn’t sure how. Then he remembered a moment from his childhood. After a bad day at school, his mom had promised him “something that will cheer you up.” After working in the kitchen, she had brought out a plate of fresh leche flan. She ate a spoonful and smiled happily. Leche flan was also his mom’s favorite.

Growing up, I realized I wasn't as talkative as others within large groups of people. Parties were a mixed experience for me — I really wanted to be part of them, but usually spent the night waiting for it to end. I saw others getting everyone’s attention. I felt less confident.
They say confidence comes with time. But eight years into my HR (human resources) career (职业), I still found myself staying out of the limelight (公众注意的中心).

Seahorses are small, thin fish. They’re called “seahorses” because they look a bit like horses. Seahorses aren’t great swimmers. There are over 40 different kinds of seahorses. Many kinds of them are threatened.
On July 18 2020, Australian scientists released (释放) hundreds of baby White’s seahorses into the wild.
A. Curious. B. Confident. C. Confused. D. Concerned.
A 9. D 10. B 11. B

根据文章第五段“About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” for them. The hotels looked a little like cages (笼子), and provided a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that could help provide food for the seahorses.(在小海马放归前约一个月,科学家为它们打造了八座水下“酒店”。这些“酒店”看起来有点像笼子,为海马提供了安全的成长空间。提前将“酒店”放入海中,能让笼子表面附着小型海洋生物,为海马提供食物)”可知,科学家们为了帮助小海马生存,在它们被放归前大约一个月,为它们建造了8个水下“旅馆”,为海马提供了一个安全的生长场所,即准备了水下栖息地。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第六段“The scientists have released seahorses into the area five times, but this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released.(科学家已五次向该区域放归海马,而此次数量创了纪录,约380只海马被放归)”可知,科学家们已经在该地区放归了五次海马,但这次放归数量达到了约380只,创下了记录,所以这次放归的独特之处在于放归海马的数量。故选B。

C 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heatwaves are damaging the world’s third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead.(七月是有记录以来全球最热的月份。高温和严重的野火席卷了北半球。海洋热浪正在破坏世界第三大珊瑚礁,位于佛罗里达州附近。随着温室气体水平的持续上升,这意味着未来将出现更多更热的夏天。)”可知,Guterres使用“全球沸腾”这个短语是因为目前严峻的形势。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段最后两句“Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enough attention. That’s because many of us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with our own eyes.(同样,“气候危机”等短语也没有得到足够的关注。这是因为我们中的许多人仍然觉得我们没有亲眼看到这场危机。)”可知,“气候危机”等短语没能引起我们的注意是因为某些气候灾难没有发生在我们身上。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But that is changing. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.(但这种情况正在改变。 故选A项。
根据文章第六段“When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he’s hoping is to make people listen — and act — now we can see what climate change looks like.(当古特雷斯使用深刻影响的话语时,他并不是在邀请我们想象好莱坞式的灾难。他所希望的是让人们现在就开始倾听并采取行动,现在我们可以看到气候变化是什么样子的)”可知,作者认为古特雷斯使用“全球沸腾”这一说法是为了让人们倾听并采取行动,因为现在我们可以看到气候变化的样子。因此,作者认为这种说法是合理可接受的。故选C项。

According to Psychology Today, confidence can be nurtured (培养), and it is possible to build it and let it grow at any given time in your life. It is true that some people have an easier time with this than others, but don’t let that discourage you. ___17___

The good news is that it’s up to you. Sit with yourself, meditate and journal Think about your strengths and weaknesses, who you are and who you aren’t. Get to know yourself better. And be kind to yourself, like you would be kind to others. ___19___ You may even start to notice a change in how you connect with others. D. These practices can be beneficial.

空格前的句子“You may believe that confidence is something people are born with, and you either have it or you don’t. (你可能认为自信是与生俱来的,你要么有,要么没有。)”提到,你可能认为自信是与生俱来的,空格后的句子“Self-confidence is something you can develop.(自信是可以培养的。)”说自信是可以培养的,所以空格处的句子应该否定上一句的观点,所以B项“That’s not necessarily true.(这并不一定正确。)”符合语境。故选B项。
【17题详解】

【18题详解】
根据空格处的句子“There is nothing to achieve from pretending and there are no easy paths to success.(假装什么也得不到,通往成功的道路也没有捷径。)” 故选A项。
空格前的句子“Sit with yourself, meditate and journal. Think about your strengths and weaknesses, who you are and who you aren’t. Get to know yourself better. And be kind to yourself, like you would be kind to others.(自己坐下来,冥想,写日记。想想你的优点和缺点,你是谁,你不是谁。更好地了解自己。善待自己,就像善待别人一样。)”是培养自信的方法,空格后的句子“You may even start to notice a change in how you connect with others.(你甚至可能开始注意到你与他人交往的方式发生了变化。)”
根据空格前的句子“Sometimes when working towards a goal, getting some additional help can play an important role.(有时候,在朝着一个目标努力的过程中,获得一些额外的帮助会起到重要的作用。)”和空格后的句子“People that know you well and are there for you can be helpful when you need a reminder of who you are and how unique, special and loved you are.(当你需要提醒自己你是谁,你是多么的独特、特别和被爱的时候,了解你的人会帮助你。)”

Back in the present, Josh decided to cheer up his mom. He went to the kitchen to make leche flan for her. He remembered watching his mom make it when he was a child. It was magic. Magic he would recreate for her right now. While he was cooking, he couldn’t help but remember all the times his mom had gone the extra mile to make him happy. Josh realized that it was time to give back. Strangely, this time, he totally forgot about playing games! When he finished, he packed it carefully, and left home.
Josh went to the hospital to pick up his mom. He called her on the cellphone to ask where she was. The hospital passage seemed really long, but he finally reached his mom’s room. When he opened the door, he found his mom sitting in bed. Her eyes lit up when she saw Josh with the sweet dessert. At that moment, Josh realized that spending time with his mom and making her happy was far more important than playing games with his friends.
