Storm Dennis, the second-strongest nontropical storm on record in the North Atlantic Ocean, caused widespread flooding across parts of the United Kingdom this week, along with winds more powerful than hurricane force.
The storm, which is producing waves up to 80 feet tall west of the United Kingdom, dumped (倾倒) more than f ive inches of rain in South Wales, almost an inch more than the area typically receives for the entire month of February. The resulting flooding has caused numerous moves and even cut off some communities.
The UK Met Off ice, which named the storm, issued its f irst “red” warning for heavy rainfall since 2015, its highest warning category (种类). The country’s Environment Agency issued a record number of flood warnings, 594, for a single day, according to John Curtin, executive director of flood and coastal risk management at the Environment Agency.
While the rainfall totals were worth noticing, they were not the f irst in history. However, coming just one week after another severe storm, known in the United Kingdom as Storm Ciara, the ground was already saturated when this one arrived. This caused many rivers and streams to overflow their banks and even triggered (触发) landslides.
Several severe flood warnings were issued, meaning the conditions posed life-threatening danger. Gwent County police said residents of Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, were advised to move because of the flooding.
4.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The destructive power of Storm Dennis.
B.The recordings of Storm Dennis.
C.The disadvantages of Storm Dennis.
D.The introduction of Storm Dennis.
5.Which is NOT true about Storm Dennis?
A.It is the second-strongest storm in the North Atlantic Ocean.
B.It produced f ierce waves and heavy rainfall.
C.It was named by the UK Met Off ice.
D.There used to be other rainfall totals like these in history.
6.The underlined word “saturated” in paragraph 4 means “________”.
A.seriously destroyed B.completely wet
C.totally f illed D.heavily hurt
7.The passage probably comes from ________.
A.an international magazine B.a newspaper report
C.a climate journal D.a weather research
C
Some scientists have traced the increase in earthquakes, especially in areas not known for the presence of fault lines or past seismic (地震的) activity, to human actions. The idea of humans causing earthquakes may seem strange at first. After all, you can run around your backyard and jump up and down as you want, and the ground isn’t going to start shaking. However, scientists have identified a variety of large scale human activities that can result in earthquakes.
Scientists have confirmed over 700 places where human activities have caused earthquakes over the last century. While many human-related earthquakes are mild and don’t cause much damage, some of them can be serious and dangerous. In fact, scientists believe human activity has caused earthquakes with magnitudes as high as 7.9 on the Richter scale.
Scientists believe most human-related earthquakes are the result of mining. As companies drill deeper and deeper below Earth’s surface to get natural resources, holes left behind can cause instability that leads to collapses that cause earthquakes. Another human activity leading to earthquakes is fracking (水力压裂) for oil and gas, including the high pressure waste water processing that usually goes with fracking. In this process, water, sand and chemicals are pressed underground under high pressure to break rocks to release natural resources.
Building large dams can also cause earthquakes. For example, about 80, 000 people died in China in 2008 as a result of a 7.9-magnitude earthquake caused by 320 million tons of water that had been collected in the Zipingpu Reservoir after a large dam was built over a known fault line.
These aren’t the only human activities that can result in earthquakes, though. Scientists point out that earthquakes can also be caused by other human activities, such as construction of skyscrapers and nuclear explosions.
8.What does the underlined part “fault lines” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Regions with active human actions. B.Places associated with natural balance.
C.Zones where natural resources are rich. D.Areas where earthquakes tend to happen.
9.What do mining and oil producing have in common?
A.They break the balance of nature. B.They destroy the stability of rocks.
C.They use high pressure to get resources. D.They do much damage to Earth’s surface.
10.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.The 2008 earthquake is the worst in history. B.Construction of dams should be stopped.
C.Tons of water must cause earthquakes. D.The location of a dam matters much.
11.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Nature punishes humans by means of earthquakes. B.Progress has been made on earthquake research.
C.Humans are to blame for some earthquakes. D.Earthquakes are no longer nature-made.
D
What is the greatest threat to mankind? Maybe different people come up with different answers. However, there is no denying the fact that the only threat to humankind, apart from humankind itself, is, without any doubt, the nature. Natural disasters are the result of natural environmental processes that have a damaging effect on people. Natural disasters can come in many forms: such as geological events like earthquakes, tsunamis or mud-rock flows, climatic events like storms, hurricanes or tornadoes and fire events like forest fires and wildfires.
The damage done by natural disasters is mainly as a result of our inability to predict exactly when they will happen. Although great progress has been made in designing and developing forecasting models for some natural disaster, complete certainty is still impossible. Even to be pessimistic there is a possibility that human beings will never achieve accurate prediction of the happening of all natural disasters.
What's more, even though we were able to predict these disasters from nature, preventing them is equally impossible. So we only have two ways to both prevent injuries or deaths and reduce economic losses to the least. These two methods are to prepare before a natural disaster comes to hit, and to manage the necessary resources and public services after a natural disaster strikes.
These two things have always been at the leading position of the projects of both national governments and international organizations. In the United States, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for the "preparedness, response and recovery planning" of both man-made and natural disasters.
Most natural disasters cannot be prevented, and both emergency preparation and good disaster management are the best ways to deal with them. Although natural events may appear to serve no purpose but simply to punish and destroy, natural disasters, a perfect symbol of the great power of the nature, are display of our planet's evolution and its state of change.
12.Which can't be regarded as a similarity between tornadoes and earthquakes?
A.They can not be prevented.
B.They are both geological events.
C.They cause damage to people.
D.They are both the result of natural environmental processes.
13.The reason why natural disasters cause so much damage is that ________.
A.it is very difficult to predict when exactly they will happen
B.our forecasting equipment is too old for many natural disasters
C.we don't do enough preparation before natural disasters strike
D.we don't have the necessary public services to use after natural disasters strike
14.It may be concluded from the passage that ________.
A.natural disasters can not be predicted at all
B.human beings are pessimistic to the future
C.being well-prepared can avoid economic losses
D.good preparation and disaster management are advisable.
15.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.a symbol of the power of nature B.the greatest threat to mankind
C.Natural disasters and mankind D.reduce losses to the least
Floods can strike quickly and with little waning in many parts of the world. Surviving a flood is a matter of preparation and correct action as soon as the disaster begins. 16 .
●Make a flood survival plan.
17 . Pick several meeting spots in case you need to leave home, such as a friend’s home in a safe town or a shelter in your area. Make sure everyone in the family know where these locations are and how to get there. Make sure the shelters and the routes to them are through high ground.
●Escape flood waters.
You may have only a short time to escape. Act quickly, using your planned route. Head to the chosen shelters during flood warnings. When emergency services tell you to leave, follow their advice. Move to higher ground away from water. Whether you are on foot or have to give up your car, higher ground is your best option. If you’re stuck at home, head for the roof if you can do so safely.
Avoid crossing through water. Water up to your ankles (脚踝) is enough to be dangerous. When you’re not sure of the water depth, don’t risk it. 18 . Use it to measure the water’s depth and feel for stable (稳固的) ground.
●Follow news and warnings.
Flooding information can be found on your local news or weather station’s TV channel or website. 19 . Also, listen to local radio stations for regular updates.
● 20 .
Roads and other paths may have been destroyed. Stay off bridges. The soil under usual routes will be soft and less able to support the weight of vehicles. Find other routes over high ground or wait for the authorities to indicate which roads are safe.
A.Watch out for damaged areas
B.Protect your home during a flood
C.If you have to go through water, bring a stick
D.Sit down with your family to establish a plan of action
E.If your car gets stuck in water, open or break the windows
F.Here are some tips to help you and your family survive a flood
G.You should receive weather information to monitor changes in the weather

Diets have changed in China — and so too has its top crop. Since 2011, the country 36 (grow)more corn than rice. Corn production has jumped nearly 125 percent over 37 past 25 years, while rice has increased only 7 percent.
A taste for meat is 38 (actual) behind the change: An important part of its corn is used to feed chickens, pigs, and cattle. Another reason for corn's rise: The government encourages farmers to grow corn instead of rice 39 (improve) water quality. Corn uses less water 40 rice and creates less fertilizer(化肥) runoff. This switch has decreased 41 (pollute) in the country's major lakes and reservoirs and made drinking water safer for people.
According to the World Bank, China accounts for about 30 percent of total 42 (globe)fertilizer consumption. The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture finds that between 2005—when the government 43 (start) a soil-testing program 44 gives specific fertilizer recommendations to farmers - and 2011, fertilizer use dropped by 7.7 million tons. That prevented the emission(排放) of 51.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. China's approach to protecting its environment while 45 (feed) its citizens "offers useful lessons for agriculture and food policymakers worldwide." says the bank's Juergen Voegele.

I looked forward to a visit with my mom, who lived 2,000 miles from my home in California. Since Mom was 80 and suffered from Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症), I realized how important it was to see her again soon.
Mom received loving care from the Sister Servants of Christ the King at a 40-bed, basic-care facility (场所) in Edgeley, North Dakota. She lived in a simple room, spent most of her day doing simple things, and seemed to be “all right, “considering that dementia (痴呆) had set in.
When Mom came in, I smiled, hugged and kissed her, and said, “Nice to see you, Mom.” She didn’t recognize who I was! I was shocked.
Stressed out, I spent several hours trying to connect with my mother—talking with her, walking around the grounds, looking at family pictures in her room, chatting with the nuns (修女) —doing whatever I could think of to help Mom recognize her son. I hoped for a recognition “wonder”. But nothing I said or did worked, I was very annoyed.
The next morning, I suddenly had an idea. I thought of something that might stir her memory (记忆).I thought of strawberry milkshake (草莓奶昔). Yes, strawberry milkshake in Edgeley, North Dakota. So I took Mom to the Edgeley Coffee Shop. I wanted to treat her here. While Mom was looking at the menu, I took Sandy, the waitress, aside, quietly told her of Mom’s dementia condition and my plan to recall her long-term memory, and ordered two strawberry milkshakes.
The first paragraph: When Sandy delivered the milkshakes, I was too nervous to say a word.
The second paragraph: There’s a simple explanation for Mom’s memory.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

A.It is the second-strongest storm in the North Atlantic Ocean.
B.It produced f ierce waves and heavy rainfall.
C.It was named by the UK Met Off ice.
D.There used to be other rainfall totals like these in history.
6.The underlined word “saturated” in paragraph 4 means “________”.
A.seriously destroyed B.completely wet
C.totally f illed D.heavily hurt
7.The passage probably comes from ________.
A.an international magazine B.a newspaper report
C.a climate journal D.a weather research
【答案】4.A 5.A 6.B 7.B
根据第二段“The storm, which is producing waves up to 80 feet tall west of the United Kingdom, dumped (倾倒) more than f ive inches of rain in South Wales, almost an inch more than the area typically receives for the entire month of February. The resulting flooding has caused numerous moves and even cut off some communities.(这场风暴在英国西部产生了高达80英尺的巨浪,在南威尔士倾倒了超过5英寸的雨水,比该地区整个2月通常的降水量多出近1英寸。由此产生的洪水导致了许多人的搬迁,甚至切断了一些社区的联系)”可知,本段主要介绍了Dennis风暴的破坏力,它带来了巨浪、暴雨以及由此产生的洪水等灾害。故选A项。
根据第一段“Storm Dennis, the second-strongest nontropical storm on record in the North Atlantic Ocean, caused widespread flooding across parts of the United Kingdom this week, along with winds more powerful than hurricane force.(Dennis风暴是北大西洋有记录以来第二强的非热带风暴,本周在英国部分地区造成大范围洪水,并伴有比飓风更强的风力)”可知,Dennis风暴是北大西洋有记录以来第二强的“非热带”风暴,而非第二强的风暴,选项A“It is the second-strongest storm in the North Atlantic Ocean.(这是北大西洋第二大风暴)”说法错误。故选A项。

C.Humans are to blame for some earthquakes. D.Earthquakes are no longer nature-made.
根据第三段关键句“As companies drill deeper and deeper below Earth’s surface to get natural resources, holes left behind can cause instability that leads to collapses that cause earthquakes.”(随着公司在地球表面下越来越深地钻探以获取自然资源,留下的洞可能导致不稳定,导致崩塌,引发地震。)可知,采矿留下的洞可能导致岩石不稳定,引发地震;再根据第三段关键句“In this process, water, sand and chemicals are pressed underground under high pressure to break rocks to release natural resources.”(在这个过程中,水、沙子和化学物质在高压下被压入地下,以破碎岩石,释放自然资源。)
根据第四段内容“Building large dams can also cause earthquakes. For example, about 80, 000 people died in China in 2008 as a result of a 7.9-magnitude earthquake caused by 320 million tons of water that had been collected in the Zipingpu Reservoir after a large dam was built over a known fault line.”(建造大型水坝也会引起地震。

【答案】16.F 17.D 18.C 19.G 20.A
16.上文“Surviving a flood is a combination of preparation and appropriate action as soon as the disaster begins.”(要想躲过洪水,一开始就得做好准备工作和采取适当的行动。)
17.下文“Pick several meeting spots in case you need to leave home, such as a friend’s home in a safe town or a shelter in your area.”(万一需要离开家,你得选几个见面的地点,比如去到在安全的城镇的朋友家,或是你所在区域的避难所。) 其中“establish a plan”和小标题“Make a flood survival plan.”一致;“Sit down with your family”和下文“Make sure everyone in the family knows”内容一致。故选D项。
18.上句“When you’re not sure of the water depth, don’t risk it.”(当你不确定水的深度时,就不要冒险。)
19.上文“Flooding information can be found on your local news or weather station’s TV channel or website.”(有关洪水的消息可以在当地新闻或气象台的电视频道或网站上找到。) 下文“Also, listen to local radio stations for regular updates.”(此外,定期收听当地电台的最新消息。)
下文“Roads and other paths may have been destroyed. Stay off bridges. The soil under usual routes will be soft and less able to support the weight of vehicles. Find other routes over high ground or wait for the authorities to indicate which roads are safe.”(道路可能受损。 介绍洪水中的路况隐患和如何选择安全路线,A项“留意受灾区域”能够概括该段内容,下文“Roads and other paths may have been destroyed”与A项的“damaged areas”一致。 故选A项。

36.has grown 37.the 38.actually 39.to improve 40.than 41.pollution 42.global 43.started 44.that/which 45.feeding
故填has grown。
故填the。
故填to improve。
故填than。

指物用that/which,故填that或者which。

注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Sandy delivered the milkshakes, I was too nervous to say a word. My mother looked at me with the milkshake in her hand. I was a little bit disappointed, wondering what to do . I sat opposite my mother, drinking the strawberry milkshake as fast as I could, just as I was a child. She drank the milkshake slowly. After about three minutes, she stopped, looking at my empty cup, and then her full cup. And then she poured her milkshake into my cup ,saying, smiling,“Joseph, when did you come back here?” .
There’s a simple explanation for Mom’s memory. When I was a kid, my family was not rich enough to buy more strawberries. Even so, father would buy some as strawberry milkshake was the favorite of both my mother and me. Every time mother made the strawberry milkshake, my family would sit around the table, drinking and chatting. In fact , mother was always watching me drinking the milkshake. If I drank up mine, she would pour hers into my cup.
【点睛】本文续写内容合理,描写详略得当,重点突出,同时表达时也使用了很多高级词汇,如a little bit disappointed有点失望;opposite对面;as … as sb. can尽某人所能;just as正如;pour… into把…倒进;even so即使如此;favorite最喜欢的;sit around闲坐等;还运用了复杂的句式,如“with的复合结构”的运用with the milkshake in her hand;现在分词作伴随状语的运用I sat opposite my mother, drinking the strawberry milkshake;时间状语从句的运用 Every time mother made the strawberry milkshake, my family would sit around the table等。
