In the Christian tradition, there were several martyred saints with the name Valentine or Valentinus. According to legend, one of these Valentines was a priest who went against the orders of Roman Emperor Claudius II by conducting marriages between soldiers and their loved ones. These actions ultimately led to his execution. However, before being put to death, St. Valentine cured his jailer’s daughter from blindness and fell in love with her. His last communication with her was a letter signed “From your Valentine,” and this marked the very first Valentine greeting.
To honor him, Pope Gelasius I made February 14 St. Valentine’s Day in 496 AD.
Some believe the choice of this particular date was an effort by the Christians to curb the celebration of a pagan fertility festival called Lupercalia. Taking place between the 13th and 15th of the month, the festival honored a Roman god and the founders of Rome through rituals of sacrifice and feasting.
The association of romantic love with Valentine’s Day did not actually emerge until the Middle Ages when a poem by Englishman Geoffrey Chaucer linked February 14 with the start of the mating period for birds.
As Valentine’s Day earned more literary mentions, it grew in popularity over the centuries. People soon adopted the tradition of exchanging romantic handwritten notes with one another.
Then, in the 1800s, a woman named Esther Howland became inspired by the fancy and intricate cards being made in England. By spearheading the mass production of similar cards in the United States, she became known as “The Mother of the American Valentine.”
During the next century, the celebration of Valentine's Day expanded to include gift-giving of items like flowers, chocolate and jewelry. These tokens of affection are exchanged not only between romantic partners but also between loved ones and friends.
Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world, especially in Europe and North America.

Whether you love Valentine's Day or hate it, one thing is clear: The festival dates back to a long time ago.
When Is Valentine’s Day?
Valentine's Day always falls on February 14, but the day of the week varies by year. In 2025, Valentine's Day will be on a Friday for the first time since 2020.
How Did Valentine’s Day Start?
Some historians believe it has roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia (牧神节). Held yearly on February 15, Lupercalia celebrated the coming of spring. It involved possibly a religious ceremony in which men and women were paired off by choosing names from a jar.
At the end of the 5th century AD, Pope Gelasius I (教宗哲拉旭一世) banned the celebration. He advocated that St. Valentine's Day replaced it, but we don't have eventual proof of that.
Who Was St. Valentine?
The real-life history of the man, St. Valentine, is unknown. There are various tales about a Christian figure named Valentine who sacrificed himself on February 14 in the 3rd century AD.
In one story, St. Valentine was a Roman priest (罗马神父) and physician who refused to change his religion was put to death in about 270 AD. Before his death, he cured the daughter of his jailer. As the story goes, he fell in love with the daughter and wrote her a letter signed "from your Valentine" on the day of his death. Whoever the man was, the day in his name replaced the Roman festival of Lupercalia.
How Did a Christian Holiday Become a Modern-Day Celebration of Romance?
The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer (杰弗里·乔叟), who lived in the Middle Ages, is believed to have connected St. Valentine's Day with the idea of romance. From then on, Valentine's Day was seen as a day of romantic love.
Why Do We Send Valentines?
If the tale of St. Valentine is true, his letter to the jailer's daughter probably counts as the first valentine. But historians say that the earliest valentines as we think of them today came about in Europe and the United States in the 17th century. They were possibly inspired by the German tradition of exchanging friendship cards. These early valentines were handmade with emotionalmessages. Over time, as printing and postal services advanced, valentines became a big commercialbusiness. Today, about 145 million valentines are sold every year. We think DIY Valentine's card ideas are still worth trying, though!
While Valentine's Day is celebrated around the world—in the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia, South Korea, France, Argentina, and Mexico, among other countries, unfortunately, it's not a bank holiday or day off.
What's the Meaning of Valentine’s Day?
The meaning of Valentine's Day can be whatever you want. You can skipthe celebrations completely, buy yourself some chocolate or flowers, or express your love and appreciationfor the people in your life, whether they're coworkers, romantic partners, friends, or family members.
