This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution(变革). In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code(代码)that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades' professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI. As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now—several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse. Campbell's point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall. AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it. But maybe electronics(电子)engineers are missing out on something here. “It turns out that two major building blocks of wood have a lot of electrical qualities,” says Magnus Berggren, a professor at Linköping University. His team has been working to make parts for electronics from the forest. Right now, they're focusing on two materials of trees. The first material is cellulose, which can make energy. Lignin, the second material, can store that energy, just as a battery does. The team has found when pressed, cellulose can produce electricity. Some device must then store the electricity until it's needed. Batteries can do this. But batteries aren't very green. They have harmful materials. That's where lignin comes in. Batteries cause electrons to flow from one place to another, which can produce electricity. In a typical battery, one material must give electrons. The other must accept them. Lignin can do both. A weak acid(酸)encourages lignin to produce electrons. “With a metal wire(金属线)to guide those electrons, you'll have electricity,” says Berggren. Berggren's team use this quality to create its new lignin-based battery. Typical batteries use a metal wire as a path to guide the flow of electrons into or out of the device. But since Berggren wants to make a battery of the forest, he looks for a natural way. Once again, he turns to cellulose. This natural material can serve as a wire-like path for electrons. To make it work well, Berggren lines them with another chemical known as PEDOT, which isn't from a tree. But when PEDOT is added to cellulose, they can conduct electricity like a wire. “With a weak acid, now you have a battery,” Berggren says. “And two of its three materials come from the forest.” Berggren can imagine one day having mobile phone batteries made largely from forest products. Tree-based electronics might also be useful in lighting. 8.What is cellulose used to do in the study? A.A Green Way to Make and Store Energy B.An Attempt to Raise Power Production C.Practical Suggestions on Planting Trees D.Recent Advances in Mobile Phones 根据第二段“His team has been working to make parts for electronics from the forest. Right now, they're focusing on two materials of trees. The first material is cellulose, which can make energy. Lignin, the second material, can store that energy, just as a battery does. The team has found when pressed, cellulose can produce electricity.”以及第三段“Some device must then store the electricity until it's needed. Batteries can do this. But batteries aren't very green. They have harmful materials. That's where lignin comes in.(一些设备必须储存电能,以备不时之需。电池可以做到这一点。但是电池并不是很环保。他们有有害物质。这就是木质素的用武之地。)”再结合全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了利用森林产品制作电子产品,尤其是利用木质素制作电池,这种电池既环保又可持续,因此A选项“A Green Way to Make and Store Energy(一种制造和储存能源的绿色方式)”最符合文章主旨,是最佳标题。故选A。 答案 A D (浙江1月卷)The Stanford marshmallow(棉花糖)test was originally conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat, selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to obtain a second treat and various forms of success. As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We're not tempted(诱惑)by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets—all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers. We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value—a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we've reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist tempting foods that we know we shouldn't eat. A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative environment as a species was information-poor, so our brains developed a mechanism that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now ceaselessly bombarded(轰炸)with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively. 12.What did the children need to do to get a second treat in Mischel's test? A.Take an examination alone. B.Show respect for the researchers. C.Share their treats with others. D.Delay eating for fifteen minutes. 根据第一段“Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat.(每个孩子都被告知,如果他们在吃之前等待15分钟,他们将得到第二次奖励。)” D 13.According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between . A.the calorie-poor world and our good appetites B.the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs C.the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D.the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit 根据第三段“But as we've reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist tempting foods that we know we shouldn't eat.(但是,当我们重塑了我们周围的世界,大大减少了获取卡路里的成本和努力时,我们的大脑仍然和几千年前一样,这种不匹配是我们这么多人努力抵抗我们知道不应该吃的诱人食物的核心原因。)” C 14.What does the author suggest readers do? A.Absorb new information readily. B.Be selective information consumers. C.Use diverse information sources. D.Protect the information environment. 根据最后一段“Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental ‘junk food’ in order to manage our time most effectively.(因此,就像我们需要更仔细地考虑我们的热量消耗一样,我们也需要更仔细地考虑我们的信息消耗,抵制精神“垃圾食品”的诱惑,以便最有效地管理我们的时间。)” B 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Eat Less, Read More B.The Bitter Truth about Early Humans C.The Later, the Better D.The Marshmallow Test for Grownups 根据第二段“As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We're not tempted(诱惑)by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets—all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.(作为成年人,我们每天都要面对棉花糖测试。 Modern robots are important to space exploration and are being used in different way for several important reasons. 16 Aside from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is thin for humans, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans.Plus, there would be radiation, bad weather, and a lack of gravity. 17 They can survive much longer under these conditions. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. 18 Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, to finding water are all performed much quicker and accurately by robots. The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work.In order to successfully send humans into space, we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end. 19 Robots don't require food or water and they never need a bathroom break. Over the past 30 years or so, there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. 20 They have both been successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history. A.Robots never complain. B.Robots make great explorers. C.This is because it is moving around the earth. D.Robots have much less limitation in these areas. E.Perhaps the most famous are Spirit and Opportunity. F.They can process information much more efficiently. G.There are some robots which are used to put the satellite back. 16.解析 根据上文“Modern robots are important to space exploration and are being used in different way for several important reasons.” 下文 “Aside from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore.” 解析 根据上文“The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans.Plus, there would be radiation, bad weather, and a lack of gravity.”下文 “They can survive much longer under these conditions.” 解析 根据下文“Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, to finding water are all performed much quicker and accurately by robots.” 解析 根据上文“Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end.”下文“Robots don't require food or water and they never need a bathroom break.” 选项A“Robots never complain.” 答案 A 20.解析 根据上文“Over the past 30 years or so, there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space.”下文“They have both been successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.” both此处指“两个机器人”,所以空白处应该是举例说明成功探索太空的两个机器人。选项E“Perhaps the most famous are Spirit and Opportunity.” (江苏盐城五校联盟高一期末)Earlier this month, I bought a new smart phone. I didn't 21 it much at first, only to get a call from my daughter. Soon, however, I found it 22 to surf the Internet on the smart phone than my large computer. Even with my 23 time I quickly found myself spending more and more of it on this phone. Yesterday when I was 24 short videos on TikTok, suddenly a long and white nose 25 its way between me and my phone. 26 ,I put the phone down, took my glasses off and petted my dog. Soon we were hugging, and romping(嬉闹)around in the house. And I 27 something too. There was a feeling in my heart: a wonderful mixture of love, laughter, and 28 . It was a 29 that I hadn't gotten once during all that time I had spent on my phone. It's strange how it took a dog to 30 me of what is important. Mom explained it easier to make me understand.“You can say I teach nursing,” she said.“My mom teaches nurses, ” I would repeat what she had said to me. When that answer led to even more questions, my response became simpler, “My mom is a nurse, ” though I was finally left wondering what it was she actually did.It definitely demanded a lot of time and energy and was important to the injured.I got my first clue about what mom actually did when having a late-night trip with her to the hospital in Central Phoenix. Mom was called in to make rounds unexpectedly that night. It was dark outside and almost time for me to go to bed, so I was shocked when she asked if I wanted to come along with her.I loved the way the light from the streetlamps passed through the car.Being amazed at the view from the front seat, I didn't say much. Some soft music was played on the radio in the car, which made me feel relaxed. When we arrived at the hospital, mom guided me through the parking garage and led me to a small emergency waiting room. There was only a row of white chairs along each wall and a TV which weighed roughly three hundred pounds. Paragraph 1: My mom handed me a bag of chocolate and left the emergency room to make her rounds. Paragraph 2: On the drive home, I asked mom if she had seen a man whose arms were injured badly. [参考范文] Paragraph 1: My mom handed me a bag of chocolate and left the emergency room to make her rounds. There was nothing to do, so I started to observe the only other person in this waiting room.I went to him and said, “Hi, my name's Monica. What's yours?” He answered me and we talked a lot.I noticed that his arms were injured badly. Before long, he was taken to the treatment room. And I stayed there alone by myself until my mom came back. Paragraph 2: On the drive home, I asked mom if she had seen a man whose arms were injured badly. She gave me a positive response and told me that the man would be fine after an operation.I felt proud of her when I realized that my mom or one of her students would be there when the man woke up.And I realized mom was a real-life superhero, who devoted all her energy to her work in the hospital. She was a nurse practitioner—an educator and a caretaker. And what she did made a difference, which even a kid could see.
