Mattel, the major game and toy-making company, has a new version of the classic board game, Scrabble. The new version, Scrabble Together, is more cooperative and accessible than the original.
Evolution and Rise of Scrabble
Scrabble, invented in 1938 by Alfred Mosher Butts, was originally called Criss-Crosswords. Butts was unable to sell the game to a major game company and made just a few copies. A decade later, an owner of one of those few copies saw its potential, and began producing it. The game took off in 1952 when the president of the Macy’s Department Store played the game and decided to stock it.
Original Version
In the original Scrabble, players try to form a word from a group of letter tiles. Each letter is worth different points, and the goal of the game is to get the most points. There are also bonuses that can multiply the value.
New Scrabble for Teams
In the new game, players can work in teams, and instead of getting the most points, the winner is the player or team that completes 20 word-related challenges. The new game is more likely to appeal to Gen Z, who are less competitive than previous generations.
The new game comes packaged together with the original version (the board is double-sided), and it is currently available outside of the United States and Canada. Because the rights for the game of Scrabble are held by Hasbro in the two countries, Mattel cannot sell the new version there.
21. When did the game Scrabble become widely popular?
A. After the recognition of an owner.
B.After Macy’s decision to stock it.
C. After it was sold to big companies.
D.After the release of its new version.
22. What is special about the new Scrabble game?
A. It involves working as a team. B.It has a complex board design.
C. It is competitive and accessible. D.It is designed for solo play only.
23. Why can’t Mattel sell the new game in the United States and Canada?
A. Because the game is not popular there.
B. Because the package contains two versions.
C. Because Hasbro possesses the licensing.
D. Because the government placed a restriction.

It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: Watching the annual Perseid meteor shower (流星雨). But this time, as the meteors flashed across the sky, a junior girl began to question, "Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a hobby?"
I grew up in a small town, where even graduating from high school was not a given for many students. But I was driven to pursue my education, and like my best friend’s dad - a pharmacist (药剂师), one of the few professional role models in my neighborhood, therefore, I chose to major in pharmacy, the science of preparing medicines, at the University of North Carolina.
The university was only a 3.5 - hour drive away, but it felt across the universe. In the weeks since I began my pharmacy degree, I had met people with jobs and PhDs in different branches of science I had never considered - neuroscience, archaeology, and even astrophysics. Their passion and knowledge opened my eyes to worlds I had never imagined. As my birthday and the Perseid meteor shower approached, I was faced with a decision: Should I stick to my long - standing plans or take a step into the unknown?
Ultimately, a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision. As the Moon gradually shaded the Sun, the world darkened around me. The stillness of the water, the desperate calls of birds, and the fading sunset deeply moved me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out of pharmacy school to pursue previously unimagined options.
Facing years of challenges and growth, I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realized that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams. As I approach the final year of my PhD, I realize that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift. It gave me an insight into life: On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance, bringing humanity together. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self - doubt to stand in the way of pursuing new dreams.
24. What motivated the author to major in pharmacy?
A. Her ambition to become a doctor. B. The encouragement of her friend.
C. Her childhood passion for pharmacy. D. The influence of her best friend's father.
25. How did the author's experience at university shape her?
A. It helped her stick to her belief. B. It opened her mind to new ideas.
C. It enhanced her pharmacy study. D. It developed her thinking abilities.
26. What can we learn from the author's understanding of life?
A. Accepting insecurities helps us handle challenges.
B. Personal problems still matter in the vast universe.
C. It's vital to pursue dreams despite personal challenges.
D. It is small and unimportant things that matter to us.
27. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Caring and patient. B. Modest and honest.
C. Generous and helpful. D. Curious and determined.

There’s a name for that feeling you get after spending too long scrolling(滚屏) aimlessly, and Oxford University Press (OUP) has chosen it as its word for the year for 2024. “Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37, 000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. In a statement released Monday, OUP, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, defined “brain rot” as the supposed decline in a person‘s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of over-consumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be shallow or unchallenging.
While the use of “brain rot” rose 230% this year, it was actually first introduced more than a century ago. According to OUP, it was first used by author Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden as he criticized society’s tendency to devalue complicated ideas in favour of simple ones. All these years later, it seems brain rot is well and truly established. The term has gained attention over the past year, however, especially as worries grow about the impact of over-consuming low-quality content online.
Earlier this year, a behavioral healthcare provider in the United States began offering treatment for brain rot, describing it as a condition of confusion, tiredness, lack of focus, and weakened mental ability. The healthcare company cited endless scrolling and social media addiction as examples of brain rot behavior, which could be prevented by setting limits on screen time or doing a digital cleansing.
“ ‘Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time, ” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. These communities have promoted the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot’, ” he added. “It demonstrates a somewhat humorous self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve received. ”
28. What does “brain rot” refer to according to Oxford University Press?
A. A headache caused by too much screen time. B. Mental decline from meaningless viewing.
C. Low-quality online information. D. Addiction to social media.
29. Why did Thoreau use the term “brain rot” in his writing?
A. To warn people about overusing the Internet. B. To encourage readers to watch shallow content.
C. To challenge society’s preference for simple ideas. D. To praise mental health advancements of his time.
30. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Brain rot is caused by social media and can be treated.
B. Social media causes most mental health issues.
C. Screen time has no impact on mental health.
D. Brain rot is not a real mental condition.
31. Why does Casper Grathwohl describe the younger generation as humorous?
A. Because they openly laugh at the mental state of older generations.
B. Because they treat low-quality online content purely as entertainment.
C. Because they completely avoid discussing brain rot and see it as a joke.
D. Because they admit the harm of social media with self-critical humor.
D
Traditional methods employed for the diagnosis (诊断) of mental-health conditions require that patients engage in direct communication with a doctor. While these methods appears sensible in theory, such assessments can, in practical terms, extend over a period of several months, and furthermore, the diagnoses are ultimately subject to a degree of subjectivity.
It is precisely for this reason that scientists are actively involved in experimental efforts to automate this diagnostic process. For instance, large language models (LLMs) possess the capacity to analyze literally recorded interviews in search of speech patterns and contextual clues indicating psychological disorders. However, text-based AI has its limitations. Cultural distinction, language barriers, and varying levels of fluency in language can impact the results. It has also been demonstrated that LLMs have a tendency to mirror the linguistic discriminations in society. In one study, an LLM failed to diagnose depression in black patients compared with white patients.
Consequently, the novel methods currently under development do not focus on individual words but on the way those words are spoken. An AI model, for example, is intended to detect slight changes in a patient's voice. The researchers assume that individuals with depression may possess distinctive ways of speaking that are not very noticeable for the human to detect.
The system uses "pre-training", a technique by which the model is initially exposed to vast quantities of general speech, to help it recognize complex speech patterns. These patterns might include variations in rhythm, pitch (音高) and voice quality that human can rarely catch. This pre-trained acts as a linguistic tuning fork, enabling the system to pick out complex variations in speech that might potentially signal depression, without the necessity of comprehending the words themselves. Subsequently, the researchers adjusted, or "fine-tuned" this general-purpose system specifically for the detection of depression with the aid of recordings of patients with depression. This method was 95% accurate when tasked with categorizing its severity based on one clinical rating extent.
Diagnosis, though valuable, is only the first step. Different people with the same condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms (症状) they find most troubling. The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident—build AI models that can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.
32. What's the challenge text-based AI faces in Paragraph 2?
A. It cannot deeply analyze speech patterns.
B. It cannot reflect linguistic discriminations.
C. It cannot correctly recognize contextual clues.
D. It cannot avoid influences from linguistic factors.
33. Why is there pre-training on vast quantities of general speech?
A. To recognize complex word patterns. B. To pick out variations in symptoms.
C. To identify complicated voice patterns. D. To understand the words themselves.
34. How will the AI-based technology further develop?
A. It will offer tailored treatments. B. It will promote its accuracy.
C. It will diversify its functions. D. It will provide personal diagnosis.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Promising AI Treatment B. Diagnosing Mental Disorders with AI
C. Language Models with AI D. Applying AI to Mental Health Treatment

If you are heavily driven by what you should do, you need to start rewiring your brain to use your emotions as information. ___38___ Once you notice them, do something concrete with them - again, act. That is how you learn to trust your emotions and use them to guide you, and how you rewire your brain.
Explore, experiment
You can’t figure out your sense of purpose by sitting on the couch and thinking it over. ___39___ You also need to focus on doing different experiments with being bold, and taking acceptable risks.

It was a day just like any other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Grace with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated(使脱白). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell, panic(恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barks. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be? Was I hallucinating(产生幻觉)? Then I heard some voices and more barks. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

Soon, I heard my parents calling my name. So I began calling back. A moment later, I saw the light of a flashlight. Following my voice and with Bubbles leading the way, my parents finally found me. They looked nervous and worried. After learning I was badly hurt, my parents quickly climbed down to me. They examined my cuts and my foot and decided that I had better not walk. Then, my father carried me on his back, down the mountain and to the nearest clinic, where a doctor was waiting for us.
Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help. He quickly ran home and barked loudly at my parents. They were confused in the beginning, but then they realized I hadn't come back home with Bubbles as usual and that I must have been in trouble. At that moment, Bubbles ran out and my parents followed him closely. Bubbles remembered the way and led my parents to the spot. How lucky I was to have such a smart dog. Thousands of words couldn't express my gratitude.
Soon, I heard my parents calling my name. Their voices were filled with relief and concern. I tried to respond, but my voice was barely a whisper. The sound of footsteps grew louder, and I could see the flickering of flashlights through the trees. I knew I was going to be okay. The rescue team, led by my parents, had arrived. They carefully approached me, their faces a mix of worry and joy. As they secured my dislocated foot and tended to my wounds, I could see the determination in their eyes. They were going to get me out of there, no matter what it took.
Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help. It turned out that after I had called out to him, he had run all the way back to our house, barking and scratching at the door. He wouldn't stop until my parents opened it. Once inside, he led them straight to my running shoes, which I had left by the door. Realizing something was wrong, they followed him back to the mountain. Bubbles had led them right to me, saving my life. His loyalty and intelligence were nothing short of remarkable. I hugged him tightly, grateful for his unwavering devotion. That day, I learned that even in the most unexpected situations, the bond between a person and their pet can be a lifeline.

根据第一段的句子“In a statement released Monday, OUP, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, defined “brain rot” as the supposed decline in a person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of over-consumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be shallow or unchallenging.(在周一发布的一份声明中,出版《牛津英语词典》的OUP将“脑腐”定义为一个人精神或智力状态的衰退,尤其是被认为是过度消费被认为肤浅或缺乏挑战性的材料(现在尤其是在线内容)的结果。)”
根据第二段的句子“According to OUP, it was first used by author Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden as he criticized society's tendency to devalue complicated ideas in favour of simple ones.(根据OUP的说法,作家亨利·大卫·梭罗在他的著作《瓦尔登湖》中首次使用了这个词,他批评了社会倾向于贬低复杂的想法,而倾向于简单的想法。)”
根据第三段的内容“Earlier this year, a behavioral healthcare provider in the United States began offering treatment for brain rot, describing it as a condition of confusion, tiredness, lack of focus, and weakened mental ability. The healthcare company cited endless scrolling and social media addiction as examples of brain rot behavior, which could be prevented by setting limits on screen time or doing a digital cleansing.(今年早些时候,美国一家行为保健机构开始为脑腐提供治疗,将其描述为一种混乱、疲劳、注意力不集中和心智能力减弱的状态。这家医疗保健公司将无休止的滚动和社交媒体成瘾作为大脑腐行为的例子,可以通过限制屏幕时间或进行数字净化来预防。)”可知,该段主要是说脑腐是由社交媒体引起的,是可以治疗的。故选A项。
根据最后一段的句子““I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. These communities have promoted the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot’, ” he added. “It demonstrates a somewhat humorous self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they've received.
解析:第二段提到 “Cultural distinction, language barriers, and varying levels of fluency in language can impact the results. It has also been demonstrated that LLMs have a tendency to mirror the linguistic discriminations in society.”,说明文化差异、语言障碍和语言流利程度等语言因素会影响基于文本的 AI 的结果,即它无法避免这些语言因素的影响,A 选项文中未提及,B 选项只是其中一个方面,不全面,C 选项与原文不符,原文说的是能分析语境线索,只是有局限性。
解析:根据文中 “The system uses "pre-training", a technique by which the model is initially exposed to vast quantities of general speech, to help it recognize complex speech patterns. These patterns might include variations in rhythm, pitch (音高) and voice quality that human can rarely catch.”
34 题,文章最后提到 “Different people with the same condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms (症状) they find most troubling. The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident—build AI models that can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.”,意思是相同病症的不同患者往往需要针对他们最困扰的症状进行定制化治疗,这项有前景的技术的下一步显然是构建能够帮助医生为患者提供个性化治疗的 AI 模型,所以答案选 A,即它将提供量身定制的治疗方案。
41. C
解析:“It all started when...”

解析:“not merely...but...”
