Mengxin beavers are a first-class state-protected animal in China. They are only found along the Ulungur River in Xinjiang. Through her work, about 400,000 willow shrubs were planted with money from Internet users.
Because of Chu’s efforts, the number of beaver nests(窝)has increased from 162 to 190 over the past four years. Chu said, “We will continue to encourage more people, especially the youth, to take part in nature conservation.”

(23-24八年级下·广东广州·阶段练习)Who says kids can’t make a difference? In Missouri, a group of students is changing lives around the world! How are they doing this? They’re buying farm animals!
Millions of people live with little food and money, so the gift of an animal can actually save lives. More than 10 years ago, the second-graders at Forsyth School learned about how Heifer International helps people. They decided they wanted to help too.
Heifer International has been helping poor people for almost 70 years. It gives farm animals to poor people and teaches them how to use the animals to improve their lives. A heifer is a young cow. Families with a cow can produce milk. They can drink or trade the milk for other things they need.
Animals save lives in other ways too. Strong animals, such as water buffaloes(水牛), can plow(犁) land. Families with a water buffalo can grow more food to eat and to sell. Heifer also gives such animals as goats, sheep, camels, and even bees to families in need.
Each second-grade class at the school decides which animals to buy and how much to give to special projects. The students’ favourite part of working with Heifer is that they can help others. They don’t want kids their age to be without home or food.
The students raise money by recycling bottles and doing handwork. Some even give away birthday or holiday gifts to Heifer! A water buffalo costs $250: that’s a lot of recycled bottles!
Kids can do many things to help others. Your class might want to raise money for Heifer too. You might also want to give your money or your time to a group in your community that helps people. Why not talk with your classmates about how your school can help others?

(23-24八年级下·广东深圳·期中)“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person,” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect chance to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
◇Start out slowly. Don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
◇Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
◇Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
◇Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, so he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
◇Invite a friend or a family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
◇Finally, it is the most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “Little things can change a person’s life.”

When I joined UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会) China as a volunteer, I couldn’t wait to help solve some big social problems right away. But at first, my job was only to interview the new staff (员工) about their training. I did what I was told to do, but to be honest, I didn’t feel like I was creating the value I imagined. After a few days, my fellow volunteers and I were asked to make a video for UNICEF China. In doing so, I was able to work with some experienced staff and learn how they understood their job. Thanks to it, I have learned several important lessons.
First, making a big change takes time. Staff with the longest work experience in UNICEF usually make the most difference. Second, the time we have spent is always worth it, no matter how long it is. For example, it might take ages to help build up one school. Once it begins, it can grow and develop further. Moreover, I find that even the “smallest thing” we do can be valuable.
Later on, the video was completed. It showed what UNICEF China did. In it, some staff were working at the front line (前线), some were doing paper work in the office and I was interviewing the new staff. I see that everyone is helping in their own ways, no matter how small the act is. Together, we are making a difference to our society and creating a brighter future for our children.

3.How many lessons did the writer learn?
A.Two. B.Three C.Four. D.None.
4.What does the writer want to tell us in paragraph 3?
A.Even small action is worth doing.
B.Big changes always take a long time.
C.Different ways help make greater progress.
D.Working at the front line is the key in UNICEF.

In China, the Lei Feng story is well known. His spirit has been passed down by many people with cultural differences.
Lugazo is a 24-year-old African boy. In 2017, he came to China to study. After arriving at the railway station in Wuhan, he was helpless because he had no idea which way to go, and he couldn’t speak any Chinese. A passenger sitting next to him on the train volunteered to take him to the university. The kind man was the first “Lei Feng” he met.
The experience encouraged Lugazo a lot. Several months later, he joined the university’s Volunteer Team and was given a red jacket with Lei Feng’s photo on it. The next year, he did voluntary work at the Wuhan Railway Station. “Once, after I helped an old woman, her 5-year-old grandson came up to me and said ‘Thank you, Lei Feng!’. That really touched me,” he said.
Another of his favorite memories was teaching English to children in a school in Hubei. Many of their parents worked in other cities, so the children lived with their grandparents. The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to the teachers’office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.

Mengxin beavers are a first-class state-protected animal in China. They are only found along the Ulungur River in Xinjiang. When Chu went there, she was shocked by what she saw. “Many beavers die fighting for a habitat(栖息地). Millions of people live with little food and money, so the gift of an animal can actually save lives. More than 10 years ago, the second-graders at Forsyth School learned about how Heifer International helps people. They decided they wanted to help too.
