We were designing a wheelchair for a college engineering course and my classmates felt only steel would be strong enough for the handheld levers (操作杆). I believed aluminum (铝) would be a better option. But the student who most strongly advocated for steel worked at a bike shop; surely I didn’t know better, having used metal only for crafts. A few days later, when the heavy steel arm kept falling, I felt validated. I had been right and I wished I had shown more steely resolve in defending my position.
I was a crafty kid. My parents always came home prepared for whatever creative chaos I had made that day — painting, clay sculpting, sewing stuffed animals, and more. But when I enrolled in engineering in college, I put these pursuits aside. I didn’t think they were relevant to my academic work and I hesitated to highlight my “feminine” crafting interests in the male-dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider. I told myself that engineering sufficiently fed my creative side.
The wheelchair project suggested my crafting might be important, but for the next few years I continued to avoid bringing it up in professional spaces. When I was being interviewed for engineering jobs later and was asked whether I made things in my spare time, I was sure the interviewers wouldn’t care about my homemade holiday cards. Instead, I expressed my interest in doing more 3D printing. The company offered me the job, so I felt my assumption was confirmed.
My attitude didn’t change until one day I was making a set of dice (骰子) as a gift for a friend. While pouring the liquid resin (树脂) into the mould, I suddenly realized that resin art shares the same spirit and some of the skills of engineering. Maybe my crafting was something I should welcome.
Since then, I’ve built crafting back into my free time. I’ve also stopped hiding it from my colleagues. I mentioned my dicemaking adventures at a robotics conference and introduced how we could gain inspiration from an art experience I had recently had in a meeting. The responses were consistently positive and constructive — not dismissive (鄙视的), as I used to fear.
I’ve grown into an engineer with valuable skills gained from my first passion.

B. The challenges she encountered in college.
C. Her parents’ impact on her creative development.
D. Her strategy for balancing crafting and engineering.
6. What made the author realize the significance of crafting to engineering?
A. Her dice making. B. Her job interview.
C. The wheelchair project. D. The robotics conference.
7. How did the author’s coworkers react when she shared her crafting experiences?

根据第一段中“We were designing a wheelchair for a college engineering course and my classmates felt only steel would be strong enough for the handheld levers (操作杆). I believed aluminum (铝) would be a better option.(我们当时正在为大学工程课程设计一种轮椅,我的同学们觉得只有钢的强度才够做手持杠杆。我认为铝将是一个更好的选择)”可知,对于选择什么材料来做操作杆,作者和其他同学观点不一致,结合划线词所在句“A few days later, when the heavy steel arm kept falling, I felt validated. I had been right and I wished I had shown more steely resolve in defending my position.(几天后,当沉重的钢制操作杆不断掉落时,我感到validated。我是对的,我真希望自己在捍卫自己的立场时能表现出更坚定的决心)”中“when the heavy steel arm kept falling”和“I had been right”可知,钢制操作杆出现了问题,证明作者之前认为铝制操作杆更好的观点是对的,作者觉得自己观点得到了证实,所以划线词“validated”与“confirmed”同义,意思是“被证实”。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“But when I enrolled in engineering in college, I put these pursuits aside. I didn’t think they were relevant to my academic work and I hesitated to highlight my “feminine” crafting interests in the male dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider.(但当我上大学选了工程专业时,我把这些爱好放在了一边。我认为它们与我的学业无关,而且在男性主导的工程环境中,我已经觉得自己是个局外人,所以我犹豫是否要突出我‘女性化’的手工爱好)”可知,作者在第二段中解释了她选择隐藏自己手工爱好的原因。故选A项。

A relative newcomer compared to YouTube and Instagram, TikTok was launched in 2016 and has since grown to an audience of over one billion monthly active users. Its format — short, shareable videos — and addictive algorithm (算法) have proved particularly popular among younger people. According to TikTok’s own data insights, the app has seen a 410% increase in travel content views since 2021.
TikTok content creator Emma Cooke thinks it’s the honesty of videos that makes them perform well. “If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a video is worth 10,000,” she says. “It’s very hard to edit them in the way you could imagine. TikTok travellers are looking for authenticity (真实性).”
More than 70% of TikTok’s European audience say they’ re likely to book a holiday based on recommendations they’ve seen on the platform (平台). Indeed, research by Adobe found that more than 60% of Gen Z Americans have used TikTok as a search engine. Entering a search term such as “top things to do in Paris” will bring up endless videos, ranked by popularity and the algorithm will adapt to these interests next time you search.
TikTok attracts many content creators, whose insights can be invaluable for travellers. But they also have the potential to cause harm, at times directing thousands of visitors to places that don’t have the infrastructure (基础设施) to support.
Many destinations have fallen victim to their own success. A study published in a journal found that, “While the tourists helped improve the economic situation, they also brought traffic and crowding, putting pressure on infrastructure.”
There’s also the issue of the promotion of unethical (不道德的) tourism. Responsible travel is of keen interest to TikTok users. But when Dr Natara Loose, an American veterinarian, visited Mauritius this year, she says she was “shocked by the number of boats selling tours to swim with dolphins, a practice illegal in Mauritius but spread all over TikTok.”
For better or worse, it’s clear the platform’s influence on travel is enormous, particularly among younger generations and it isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
8. What makes TikTok popular according to Emma Cooke?
A. Its longer videos. B. Its older audience.
C. Its focus on edited content. D. Its video content’s authenticity.
9. What do most Gen Z Americans use TikTok as according to the text?
A. A booking platform for travel accommodations.
B. A platform for sharing travel photos and videos.
C. A search engine for travel recommendations.
D. A tool for connecting with local tour operators.
10. What is a potential negative consequence of TikTok tourist promotions?
A. They may over-commercialize tourism. B. They may overcrowd local infrastructure.
C. They may prevent sustainable travel modes. D. They may increase the risk of cultural similarity.
11. What would be the best title for this text?
A. How TikTok boosts the economy B. Why TikTok makes responsible travellers
C. How TikTok is changing the face of travel D. What TikTok learns from other platforms
D 9. C 10. B 11. C

根据第三段中“Indeed, research by Adobe found that more than 60% of Gen Z Americans have used TikTok as a search engine. Entering a search term such as ‘top things to do in Paris’ will bring up endless videos, ranked by popularity and the algorithm will adapt to these interests next time you search. (事实上,Adobe的研究发现,超过60%的美国Z世代将TikTok用作搜索引擎。输入诸如‘巴黎必做的顶级事情’这样的搜索词,将会出现无数视频,按人气排名,下次你搜索时,算法会根据这些兴趣进行调整)”可知,大多数美国Z世代将TikTok用作旅游推荐的搜索引擎。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“But they also have the potential to cause harm, at times directing thousands of visitors to places that don’t have the infrastructure (基础设施) to support. (但它们也有可能造成危害,有时会将数千名游客引向没有相应基础设施支持的地方)”和第五段中“While the tourists helped improve the economic situation, they also brought traffic and crowding, putting pressure on infrastructure. (虽然游客有助于改善经济状况,但他们也带来了交通拥堵问题,给基础设施带来了压力)”可知,TikTok旅游推广的一个潜在负面后果是可能使当地基础设施过于拥挤。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A relative newcomer compared to YouTube and Instagram, TikTok was launched in 2016 and has since grown to an audience of over one billion monthly active users. Its format — short, shareable videos — and addictive algorithm (算法) have proved particularly popular among younger people. According to TikTok’s own data insights, the app has seen a 410% increase in travel content views since 2021. (与YouTube和Instagram相比,TikTok算是一个相对较新的平台,它于2016年推出,此后每月活跃用户已增长到超过1亿。它的形式——简短、可分享的视频——以及让人上瘾的算法,在年轻人中尤其受欢迎。根据TikTok自己的数据洞察,自2021年以来,该应用上的旅游内容浏览量增长了410%)”以及最后一段“For better or worse, it’s clear the platform’s influence on travel is enormous, particularly among younger generations and it isn’t going anywhere any time soon. (不管是好是坏,很明显这个平台对旅游的影响是巨大的,尤其是在年轻一代中,而且这种影响短期内不会消失)”可知,文章围绕TikTok对旅游的影响展开,它既推动了旅游信息传播,也带来一些问题,正在改变旅游的面貌。C项“How TikTok is changing the face of travel (抖音如何改变旅游面貌)”能概括文章内容,最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

Over the past 40 years, neuroscience (神经科学) researchers have begun to build a remarkably accurate picture of what exactly happens in the brain during adolescence (青春期).
One area of research has been neuroplasticity — that is, the brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections. During childhood, the brain’s 86 billion neurons create numerous connection patterns. Each time we learn to do something, neural pathways are created that allow us to repeat and improve upon the action. By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become “fixed”, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger “fixed” connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively. However, the disappearance of other less-used connections reduces the brain’s “flexibility”. As a result, adults find it harder to master new skills or remember unfamiliar information.
It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous “plasticity” — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorising things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language. Recent research has even shown that a person’s IQ, which was previously thought to be unchanging, can improve in the teen years!
Research has also shown a further difference in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of teenagers and adults. The PFC is the area of the brain that’s responsible for abstract thinking. Its functions include planning. predicting the results of actions as well as regulation of emotions, and focusing on goals. Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive (冲动的) and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices.
Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
12 What happens to neural pathways as individuals grow from children to adults?
A. Some disappear because new connections are formed.
B Some become strengthened through frequent use.
C. They increase in number but decrease in strength.
D. They remain highly flexible throughout adulthood.
13. What does higher brain plasticity mean to teenagers?
A. They have more intelligence than adults. B. They have a remarkable ability to learn.
C. They can play an instrument better than adults. D. They have an intense interest in learning.
14. How are teenagers influenced by the PFC?
A. They act without much consideration. B. They can memorise things very quickly.
C They experience powerful emotions. D. They adapt to new environments easily.
15. What is Dr Daniel Siegel’s opinion?
A. Adolescence is the most difficult period of life.
B. Teenagers’ brain development is already complete.
C. Teenagers should be given more freedom and independence.
D. Studying the development of teenagers’ brains benefits them.
B 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become “fixed”, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger “fixed” connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively.(到成年后,经常使用的神经通路变得“固定”,而较少使用或未使用的神经通路则消失。这些更强的“固定”连接使成年人有更复杂的想法,并更有效地执行常规行动)”可知,随着个体从儿童成长为成年人,经常被使用的神经通路会变得“固定”,也就是得到了加强。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous “plasticity” — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorising things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language.(过去人们认为,青少年的大脑在这方面与成年人相似,但研究表明,青少年的大脑仍然具有巨大的“可塑性”——比儿童时期少,但比成年人多——因此,青少年在学习和记忆方面比成年人更好。这意味着这是一个培养新技能的好年龄,比如演奏乐器、学习开车或说一门新语言)”可知,青少年大脑具有更高的可塑性,这意味着他们比成年人更擅长学习和记忆东西,也就是他们有很强的学习能力。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive (冲动的) and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices.(与成年人不同,青少年的PFC仍在发育中,这就解释了为什么青少年会冲动、冒险,以及为什么他们很难集中注意力、做出正确的选择)” 可知,青少年的前额叶皮层(PFC)仍在发育,这解释了为什么青少年会冲动、冒险,也就是他们做事不经过太多考虑。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills.(精神病学家丹尼尔·西格尔博士认为青少年时期是非常令人兴奋的时期。
Solitude (独处) gets a bad name because it’s often equated with loneliness. Loneliness involves being isolated (孤立的) despite wanting social connections, whereas being alone means taking time for yourself between regular social interactions._____16_____. You can also be alone without having feelings of loneliness.
While there are downsides to loneliness, research has found real benefits of doing things alone. Here are several to consider.
Improve concentration and memory
When you are working in a group, you might use less effort to memorize information. ____17____. Working on things alone can help you focus your attention, which can improve your memory. In one study, researchers found that groups working collaboratively (合作地) to recall information performed worse than individuals recalling things on their own.
____18____
Spending time alone gives you time to focus on your interests. When you are surrounded by others, you might set your own ideas and passions aside to satisfy the needs of your friends and family. Taking time on your own gives you the opportunity to make creative choices and focus your attention without worrying about what other people are thinking.
Boost creativity
Collaborative brainstorming is often seen as one of the best ways to generate new ideas. ____19____. While group efforts are often about achieving consensus (共识) and fitting in with the crowd, working alone encourages innovation without added social pressure.
Make you more sympathetic
A certain amount of alone time can help you have greater sympathy for the people around you. However, truly spending time alone isn’t always easy, especially with tech transforming alone time. If you are not able to be completely by yourself, cutting back on digital communication for a brief time might be helpful. ____20____.
A. Put your interests first
B. Improve your relationships
C. You assume that others in the group will fill in the gaps
D. A little absence might really make the heart grow fonder
E. You can be lonely even when you are in the presence of others
F. A study found teens’ emotion interpretation improved after 5 device-free days
G. However, research shows individuals solve tough problems equally well when working alone
E 17. C 18. A 19. G 20. F

One weekend, Joe and Bella’s parents were too busy with work to spend time with them. They would be sent to their grandmother’s house for the weekend, and she promised to take them to the beach for some fun. However, plans can often change unexpectedly. When they woke up on Saturday morning, they found it was raining outside.
Bella gazed longingly at the world outside, but the downpour showed no signs of stopping. When they arrived at their grandmother’s house, the rain was still pouring, causing her to suggest spending the day indoors. Joe and Bella did a series of indoor activities: watching movies, playing cards, and doing homework. Yet, the rain continued.
Bella felt incredibly bored. She hated the weather, and the fact that their beach trip was ruined only added to her frustration. Joe, though engaged in his homework, could sense Bella’s disappointment. He tried to comfort her, but her mood only worsened, leading to her storming out of the room in anger.
Shortly afterward, the kitchen filled with the clanging (发出叮当声) of pots and pans. Curious, Joe went to investigate and found Bella stirring something in a large bowl. She had decided to make a special cake for Selby, their grandmother’s dog, who couldn’t go for a walk outside. Joe looked at the odd mixture with some concern.
When Bella placed the cake on the floor for Selby, he merely sniffed at (用鼻子嗅……) it and ran away. Bella burst into tears, and their grandmother rushed in to comfort her. However, Bella was too upset to be easily comforted, and she felt her day had gone from bad to worse.
Their grandmother watched Bella crying, her heart heavy with mixed feelings. Meanwhile, Joe felt helpless. The atmosphere in the house became unusually tense, with everyone lost in their own emotions.

Suddenly, their grandmother had a brilliant idea, suggesting that they all make a cake for Joe and Bella’s parents. She explained how their parents worked tirelessly everyday, emphasizing that this cake would be a wonderful way to express their gratitude while also allowing everyone to enjoy the fun of creation. Joe and Bella’s spirits lifted instantly up on hearing the suggestion. Without wasting a moment, Joe dashed to the kitchen to grab a mixing bowl, while Bella eagerly selected the freshest ingredients from the kitchen cupboard. They mixed the batter together, laughing and chatting as they did so. Their grandmother supervised the baking. Everyone was fully immersed in the joyful process.
When the cake was finally baked and decorated, they were delighted to find that the rain had stopped. Sunlight flooded through the windows, casting a warm, golden glow and filling the room with hope. Their grandmother, with a twinkle in her eye, suggested a walk at the beach, and Selby wagged his tail in excitement. Hand in hand, they wandered along the beach. Returning home just in time, they found their parents waiting with open arms. As the family sat together, tasting the cake they’d made with love, their faces shone with happiness. Despite the weekend’s twists and tums, it concluded in a heartwarming, joyous manner, with bonds strengthened and memories cherished.

12. What happens to neural pathways as individuals grow from children to adults?
A. Some disappear because new connections are formed.
B. Some become strengthened through frequent use.
C. They experience powerful emotions. D. They adapt to new environments easily.
15. What is Dr Daniel Siegel’s opinion?
A. Adolescence is the most difficult period of life.
B Teenagers’ brain development is already complete.
C. Teenagers should be given more freedom and independence.
D. Studying the development of teenagers’ brains benefits them.
